Kurt Osiander joins forces with Anthony Bourdain for a special edition of his famous Move of the Week video series.

If you watched Bourdain’s Parts Unknown this Sunday on CNN, you saw that Jiu-Jitsu was a huge part of the episode set in the bay area.

The only thing missing was a technique taught by Osiander.

So, here it is.

Learn a choke using the lapel to be used when the opponent tries to defend your half guard pass.

His final match was against world champion Rafael Lovato (Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu). The duel began balanced for both competitors, but after a while Flavio “Cachorrinho” was able to find space, get to Lovato’s side and attack the back. Calmly, the GB athlete used the lapel to finish with a choke. Check it out!

Held last weekend in the city of Fortaleza, the CBJJ-sanctioned Ceará State championship crowned the black belt Davi Romcy the local boy to beat. The Ribeiro JJ athlete was making his debut at the highest rank in competition Jiu-Jitsu and showed he’s in it to win it.

Inspired by Xande Ribeiro, who held a seminar last week at the Fortaleza branch of his association, Davi tapped out everyone he faced in the competition, taking gold at medium heavyweight and in the absolute division. “I’d like to thank all my students, friends, family, my girlfriend, my masters Thiago Goiabeira and Guilherme Rocha de Faria, as well as the entire Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu team,” said the ace.

In the final of the absolute contest, Davi wrapped a lapel around Helio Mourão of Gracie Barra’s neck to squeeze out a choke from side-control. Watch the hold unfold below:

In the divisions not won by Romcy, Helio Mourão took the heavyweight title, Gilson “Neném” Nunes of Evolution team won the featherweight contest, and also-Evolution rep Lucca França placed atop the lightweight division.

Among the veterans, Francelino Gonçalves of Nova União took top spot in the master open weight division. Now Paulo Ceguim of Evolution took gold at middleweight, Breno Lima of MG won at lightweight, and Osmar Fontes did the same but at heavyweight.

At brown belt, four Evolution athletes closed out the absolute and decided amongst themselves who would get the medals: Alison Viana took gold; Paulo Izaias, silver; while Leandro Silva and Fabio Silva shared bronze.

In the overall team contest, Gracie Barra took first, followed by Brasa and Evolution.

A many-time Brazilian national champion and runner-up at this year’s Jiu-Jitsu World Championship, having closed out with Guilherme Mendes, Ary Farias is one of the most respected little guys in the current gentle art scene.

In the minidocumentary below, Ary talks of his preparation for championships, addresses his start in Jiu-Jitsu after watching Rickson and Royce Gracie fighting, and teaches you how to literally flatten your opponent out on the mat.

“I got into Jiu-Jitsu when a friend of mine showed me Rickson and Royce’s fights. They were a lot smaller than their opponents, and even so they were dominant in their fights. Size isn’t a determining factor. That’s where I got my passion from,” said the Atos Jiu-Jitsu black belt.

Ary took the opportunity to teach creative finishes from side-control. The key is to keep chest to chest and make them as uncomfortable as possible with your shoulder, to get them to look the other way and be at your mercy.
