A gelada Rússia teve no último domingo, dia 16, uma grande apresentação com a nata do Jiu-Jitsu leve no mundo, em mais uma edição do Berkut Jiu-Jitsu.

Também conhecido como ACBJJ, o evento contou com dois GPs, um até 60kg e outro até 65kg, com oito atletas cada. Mesmo com nomes de peso como Léo Vieira, Augusto Tanquinho e Rafael Barata, os destaques do dia ficaram para a dupla casca-grossa Paulo e João Miyao.

Os irmãos craques no berimbolo faturaram os dois GPs do evento, João em 60kg e Paulo nos 65kg. João, para garantir a cinta, venceu Mayko Araujo, Laércio Fernandes e Isaac Doederlein, este último na final do evento, após vencer três dos quatro rounds que contemplam o formato da disputa.

Paulo, por sua vez, teve de superar Osvaldo Queixinho e Augusto Tanquinho para garantir sua vaga na final. Pelo título, finalizou Gabriel Marangoni pelas costas.

Last Sunday, Russia held another installment of Berkut Jiu-Jitsu. Also known as ACBJJ, the event featured two GPs — 60kg and 65kg — with eight athletes each.

In the end the Miyaos had won both — João at 60kg and Paulo at 65kg. João defeated Mayko Araujo, Laércio Fernandes and Isaac Doederlein — the latter one in the final by winning three out of four rounds.

Paulo had to outplay Osvaldo Queixinho and Augusto to reach his final. Then he subbed Gabriel Marangoni from the back.

As regras para a luta entre Preguiça e Ryan consistiam em duelo de uma hora, com tempos extras, sem pontos ou punições. Só a finalização definiria o vencedor. As outras duas lutas seguiam a mesma regra, com tempo de 30min de luta.

No duelo principal, Preguiça foi dominante contra o finalizador sem kimono. Com pressão por cima na passagem, Preguiça acelerou, enquanto Ryan tentava atacar com suas conhecidas chaves de perna. Preguiça, por sua vez, aproveitou uma dessas situações para chegar nas costas e finalizar com um mata-leão. Após a disputa, Preguiça e Rominho Barral aproveitaram para desafiar Gordon para novo duelo, desta vez de kimono, com um montante de 20 mil dólares em disputa. Nos outros dois duelos, Garry Tonon fez luta movimentada com Kim Terra e finalizou na guilhotina com 18min de combate. Antes, Kennedy Maciel, filho de Rubens Cobrinha, encarou o fenômeno Nick Ryan. Kennedy dominou o duelo por cima, mas não conseguiu finalizar no tempo normal. No tempo extra, pegou Nick rápido no triângulo.

The duel between Felipe Pena “Preguiça” and Gordon Ryan, one of the big talents of the new generation, was surrounded with great expectations. Two of the biggest talents of the competition scene, they were face to face on December 17 at Studio 540, in Solana Beach, Calif. In a one-hour, no-gi, submission-only match, Pena took a half-hour to take Gordon’s back and sink a rear naked choke.

Pena repeled every one of Ryan’s leg attacks, passed the guard twice and took the back a couple of times. Eventually he took the back and finished.

“I’m very happy,” he told Graciemag. “It was a one-hour fight, and I had never fought like that. But I trained a lot for it. Little by little I gained confidence. When he locked the attacks I was able to get out, and the finish was a house specialty with the back-take.”

Along with Ryan, another member of the Danaher Death Squad in action was Garry Lee. He faced Kim Terra and came out with a submission 15 minutes in.

The first bout of the evening pitted Ryan’s brother Nicky Ryan against Kennedy Maciel, Son of four-time BJJ world champion Charles Cobrinha. It went into overtime, and Kennedy won with a triangle.

Tanner Rice

The IBJJF competition circuit made a stop this weekend in San Jose for two days of action both with and without the gi.

The 2016 San Jose Open gathered almost a thousand athletes at the SJ City College.

Tanner Rice was the standout in the black belt division, winning both the medium-heavy division and the open class.

Here is the open class final between Rice and Eliot Kelly.

In the female division, Patricia Fontes came back from a defeat to Kristina Barlaan in the featherweight division to win the open class against Leanna Dittrich.

In the no-gi divisions, the standout was Kim Terra, winner of the lightweight and the open class.

Hundreds of athletes gathered to compete for a chunk of the $30k in money prizes being offered by the IBJJF.

In the black belt division, four competitors came out on top at the end of their brackets.

Here is how they made it to the top of the podium.

Female

Sarah Black vs. Jessica Smith

GD Jiu-Jitsu’s Sarah Black was the standout with double gold in the lightweight division and the open class, which secured her a $1,5k big check. After beating Jessica Smith 2-0 in the division final, she went on to finish Megan Nevill with a leg lock for the open class title.

Male 

Featherweight – In three matches, Kim Terra made his way to the top of the podium. First he caught Masahiro Iwasaki with a bow and arrow choke. In the semifinal, another bow and arrow to finish Tsuyoshi Tamaki and get to the final. His opponent would be Gianni Grippo, who made it to the final after choking Paulo Santana from the back.

The final match was a very strategic one, with Terra and Grippo exchanging sweeps throughout the entire regulation time. In the end, the socre was 8-8, with four sweeps and piece and the three referees decided to give Kim the win by unanimous decision.

Middleweight – Otavio Sousa fought twice in the division to secure his $4k check. In the semifinal, he swept Kevin Machecha once to score the winning two points. His opponent in the gold medal decider would be Victor Silverio, who first swept Nathan Mendelsohn and after that beat Mansher Khera 4-0 for his spot in the final.

The battle for the gold medal was decided by one advantage after a 2-2 tie on points. Otavio Sousa managed to score three advantages against two scored by Silverio to go home with the big prize.

Heavyweight – Marcos Tinoco fought befor his Marcelo Garcia Academy’s teammate and walked away with the $4k prize. First he beat Thiago Sá 2-1 on advantages for near-sweeps in the semifinal. His opponent in the final would be Rafael Barbosa, who didn;t have to fight because of Tanner Rice’s no show.

The final match was a battle of sweeps and Tinoco was able to score one more than Formiga to win 4-2 and be the champion.

Se você consegue vencer em Nova York, consegue vencer em qualquer lugar, já dizia Frank Sinatra. Neste sábado 21 de novembro, alguns temidos faixas-pretas buscaram demonstrar a superioridade de sua técnica no NY BJJ Pro da IBJJF, e de quebra faturar 4 mil dólares no evento profissional da Federação Internacional.

No peso-pena, Gianni Grippo lutava em casa, diante da torcida dos colegas da academia de Marcelo Garcia, mas Kim Terra estava disposto a levar o prêmio para casa. O irmão de Caio Terra começou num ritmo irresistível, estrangulando com o arco-e-flecha dois oponentes japoneses, ambos da equipe Carpe Diem. Primeiro, ele sufocou Masahiro Iwasaki pelas costas. Depois, finalizou Tsuyoshi Tamaki da mesma maneira.

Do outro lado, Grippo finalizara Paulo Santana também das costas. A final prometia equilíbrio, e foi o que houve. Kim raspou Gianni quatro vezes, que devolveu as raspagens. No fim, com 8 a 8 no placar, os árbitros decidiram unanimemente para o campeão Kim, que já fizera um Mundial 2015 vistoso. Vamos ver o que a temporada 2016 reserva para a fera.

No peso seguinte, o médio, Otávio Sousa confirmou o favoritismo. O bicampeão mundial no peso precisou passar pelos duríssimos Kevin Mahecha (2 a 0, com uma raspagem), e por Victor Silvério na final. Para vencer a fera da GFTeam Flórida, Otávio foi melhor nas vantagens: 3 a 2, após empate em 2 a 2 nos pontos.

Já no peso pesado, um faixa-preta de Marcelinho Garcia fez a festa da torcida. O promissor Marcos Vinícius Tinoco raspou Rafael Formiga duas vezes, para vencer o exímio guardeiro da Soul Fighters por 4 a 2.

No feminino, Sarah Black (GD) foi a grande campeã, ao vencer ouro duplo, no peso e no absoluto.

João Miyao, campeão do aberto, precisou duelar com Kim Terra (CTA) na semifinal.

Depois de diversos giros e uso da guarda lapela pelos faixas-pretas, Miyao foi vencedor.

Paulo Miyao, amplo favorito para o título dos plumas no Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu 2015, tinha luta marcada para o sábado, mas seu oponente não apareceu. Sem mudar suas feições, o faixa-preta paranaense de 24 anos parou de aquecer, guardou as coisas na mochila e se retirou. Quando foi anunciado para receber sua homenagem, como um dos dez atletas mais bem ranqueados do mundo na faixa-preta, nem foi lá buscar sua placa ofertada pela IBJJF. O foco estava na medalha de ouro, e nada o distrairia.

Na manhã de domingo, 31 de maio, Paulo começou sua campanha contra Vitor Paschoal (Brasa), no mesmo instante em que seu irmão João vencia Koji Shibamoto no ringue 2, ao lado. Paulo terminou a luta mais rápido, ao berimbolar e finalizar nas costas.

Na semifinal, Miyao enfrentou Kim Terra, um estudioso do Jiu-Jitsu que conseguiu raspar e se fechar bem na defesa – mas não a ponto de eliminar Paulo. No fim, 8 a 2 para o aluno de Cícero Costha, que novamente pegou as costas.

Na final, era hora da modernidade contra a experiência, do berimbolo contra Beleza. O cearense Daniel Beleza (SAS), gabaritado competidor que não demonstra os 39 anos que tem, estava confiante em si, após eliminar Thomas Lisboa, Samuel Braga e o parceiro dos Miyao José Tiago, na semifinal.

De fato, Daniel é faixa-preta desde 2000, quando Paulo Miyao nem sabia o que era Jiu-Jitsu. Mas nem ele foi capaz de segurar um rato de tatame como Miyao, que até pouco tempo comia e dormia no tatame.

Em três minutos, Paulo Miyao berimbolou e foi para as costas com a mão funda na gola, e não havia nada que Daniel Beleza pudesse fazer. Quem esperava as lágrimas de praxe de Paulo, se surpreendeu: a comemoração foi mais contida do que de costume, graças a um sabor amargo.

“Estou de boa. Após a luta eu ainda estava bem chateado com a final do meu irmão João, mas agora estou feliz, de boa. Consegui o título que queria, mas agora é treinar mais, para tentar conseguir mais um ano que vem, e o segundo é sempre mais difícil”, disse Miyao, com um sorriso tímido e apressado de sempre, doido para dar as costas para o repórter e evitar a entrevista. Vida longa ao novo rei dos plumas.

No peso-pena, por exemplo, Kim Terra e Alexandre Vieira estavam famintos por uma medalha de ouro com o selo da IBJJF, o que rendeu ótimo combate.

Kim puxou e tentou embolar Alexandre que, por sua vez, estava atento e mostrou boa defesa das costas.

Mais experiente, o faixa-preta da CTA venceu Alexandre por pontos. Mas antes de ter o braço erguido, Kim precisou defender o perigoso estrangulamento de gola do aluno de Murilo Bustamante.
