Nosso objetivo no Ultimate é fazer história.

The post Distak comenta mudança de adversários e estratégias dos atletas da XGym first appeared on Graciemag.

A celebrated name from the Jiu-Jitsu world, two-time absolute champion Ronaldo Souza made his move to MMA back in 2005, and now he’s a standard bearer for the Strikeforce middleweight division.

“Jacaré,” as he’s known, captured the divisional title by beating Tim Kennedy in August of 2010. He’s had two defenses since, losing the second and the title to Luke Rockhold in 2011.

While Strikeforce seems to be fizzling as a promotion, amid rumors that the impending January event will be its swan song, Jacaré is only becoming stronger and better-trained. In the following interview, he speaks with GRACIEMAG.com about his next commitment against Lorenz Larkin—possibly his last in Strikeforce.

GRACIEMAG.com: What do you make of Lorenz Larkin, Jaca?

JACARÉ: He’s an excellent striker. And he’s well-rounded, too. He was going to fight Luke Rockhold for the belt before Luke got injured, so this is the kind of challenge I like — a tough fight!

What about your training in Rio de Janeiro, how’s that going?

I’m training really hard. I’m sharpening up my boxing with Josuel Distak and Cesário Bezerra and doing wrestling with Adrian Jaoude. The physical conditioning is taken care of by Rogério Camões, as always. Training’s going off here at X-Gym. We’ve got excellent sparring partners.

Do you feel like you’ve got one foot in the UFC? What do you expect there?

I’ve got a good feeling about it. It was always my goal to fight there, so let’s wait and see. There are definitely excellent fighters in my weight class in the UFC, so I see myself doing great fights with the best in the world.

Is there anyone in particular you want to face over there?

My goal in the UFC is to take one step at a time, have great fights and put on a show for the folks who dig MMA. I’ve never picked opponents, much less turned down a fight. I’ll fight whoever they put in my way.
The post Ronaldo ‘Jacaré’ and the UFC: ‘I’ll Fight Anyone They Put in My Way’ first appeared on Graciemag.

Quem eles colocarem lá para me enfrentar eu vou lutar.
The post Ronaldo Jacaré e o UFC: “Luto contra quem eles quiserem” first appeared on Graciemag.

Erick Silva hadn’t tasted defeat since 2006, until he ran into John Fitch in a barnburner of a fight at UFC Rio last October.

Testament to how pleased everyone was with his last fight despite his being on the wrong end of the judges’ decision, Erick (14- 3) was called right back up to adorn the star-studded card for UFC 156, an event to take place on Feb. 2, Super Bowl weekend, in Las Vegas, where he will take on Jay Hieron (23-6).

GRACIEMAG.com had a chat with the jiu-jitsu black belt and former soccer player. Check out what he had to say:

GRACIEMAG.com: What did you learn from your decision loss to the extremely well-rounded Jon Fitch at UFC Rio?

ERICK SILVA: It was a tough and lively fight. I feel the main thing I learned is that I need to be well-rounded. These days, MMA fighters can’t just be flawless at one style. I have to be an expert at everything. I have to train in everything so I’ll be ready for the next ones.

Did you identify any flaws in your game that need correcting?

Each one is a separate case. We have to be sharp in all styles and try to improve our strategy with every fight if we want to leave the octagon with a win.

It was a great fight when it comes to grappling, with submission attempts and taking the back. Did you feel you came up short at all? Will you up your jiu-jitsu training?

Here at the academy we train everything, and all our training sessions are intense. It’s no different when it comes to ground training, which is always excellent here. For this next fight, I’m going to have to bring in a great jiu-jitsu coach for my camp. I want to show up in Vegas even sharper.

Your next opponent is the experienced Jay Hieron. Do you consider him to be tougher or not as tough as Fitch?

There are no weak fighters in the UFC, and the welterweight division is one of the toughest. Jay [Hieron] and Fitch are really tough fighters with great attributes. It will be a great fight, is all I can say.

What will your camp for UFC 156 be like?

I’m going to do all my training at X-Gym with Josuel Distak and Rogério Camões, like I always do. Someone else who has come in and has already helped me out a lot is Adrian Jaoude, the wrestling coach. Training at the gym is already off the hook.

What went through your mind when you were added to such a stellar card as UFC 156, with Aldo vs. Edgar, Minotouro vs. Rashad, Demian vs. Fitch and so many other great battles?

I’m glad that I get to fight alongside so many big names again. It’s just that the most important fight on the card is always mine. That’s the one that most interests me and the one I’m most focused on. I want to have a great fight and get my hand raised and please the fans.

The post Erick Silva: “A principal luta do card é sempre a minha” first appeared on Graciemag.

We got a close-up look at Anderson Silva toiling away at the Nogueira brothers’ training center in preparation for his August 27 fight with Yushin Okami at UFC Rio. Alongside beasts like Erick Silva – who will also see action at the big Rio de Janeiro event –, Rafael Feijão and Paulo Bananada, the “Spider” received his instruction from Josuel Distak and Ramon Lemos while sparring. Afterwards, he didn’t even towel off the sweat before having a chat with GRACIEMAG.com, then continuing the conversation while hitching a ride to the Barra da Tijuca part of the city. Check out what the superstar had to say, addressing the latest news from his side and responding to contentious statements made by his last opponent, Chael Sonnen. And don’t miss the exclusive picture gallery!

How significant is the UFC’s return to Brazil for the first time in ten years?

MMA is growing by leaps and bounds and gaining popularity. We have to be ever more serious about the work we’re doing in order for it to stay that way. The UFC coming here is really important for the big companies and sponsors to see and believe in this sport.

You’re managed by former soccer star Ronaldo and represent Corinthians soccer club in the octagon. Do you feel MMA may one day have as many fans in Brazil as soccer does?

Getting up there with soccer… Soccer has its own parameters and numbers. I have friends on the soccer inside and from being around them I’ve realized it’s something completely different in many respects, but I hope MMA gets close. In the United States, the UFC has managed to outdo American football, which is the biggest sporting event over there. We have to try and come close to doing that here. Beating soccer is impossible, but it would be great just to come close and get a similar level of recognition.

You always admitted to being a Corinthians fan, even tried to play for them. How do you feel now that you represent the “Timão” when you fight?

I was born in São Paulo [Corinthians is the most popular team in São Paulo] and moved to Curitiba when I was four but I’ve been a Corinthians fan ever since I was a kid. Life works in funny ways. I lived in São Paulo with my dad for a year and tried out for the Corinthians. Everything ended up going wrong, I didn’t make the cut, but I stuck around at Corinthians training boxing with Coach Vitor Ribeiro. I’m blessed, as now I’ve joined the ranks, I got to meet Ronaldo and have this relationship with the club together with 9ine [Ronaldo’s marketing firm]. Thank God it’s all working out and we’re reaping the rewards. My greatest frustration was always that I didn’t make it as a soccer player, and now I get to represent the Corinthians in a different way. It’s really gratifying.

You broke barriers, gained exposure in the mass media, and your agenda is always packed. Does that get in the way of training?

We try keeping a balance between outside commitments and my work as a professional fighter, and it’s going smoothly. I’m working with super professional people and we’ve managed to put everything in order, always as a team. It’s been great, man. I feel this business of breaking barriers in other sectors of society when it comes to fighting has been going on for some time now. There’s the example of Master Rickson [Gracie] and other fighters. We just have to keep it up, keep working to get our sport to where it should be.

Do you feel greater responsibility now you’ll be fighting in Brazil for your next outing?

I’m chill, relaxed. I’m carrying on with my training and I’m focused. I don’t feel any pressure, if just because I’ve always rose to this type of occasion in the past and I’m training to do it again: to handle all kinds of pressure in any situation. Of course, it’s tough sometimes but I manage to keep focused and working on my objectives and goals. Master Pedro Rizzo just got back from Holland, so there’s that extra added energy now. Everything’s great.

Your last opponent, Chael Sonnen, recently made some derogatory statements about you, Brazilian fighters, and the Brazilian people. Do you have anything to say about that?

Man, what can I say about him? All of us, as Brazilians, get upset by his attitudes. We respect Americans, Japanese; we respect everybody. We have a tradition in this sport dating back many years and it’s sad to see people not respecting that. But if they don’t respect you in one way, they will in another. We’ll show our hegemony, our strength and heart in another way. Unfortunately, there are people living in the first world who aren’t all that evolved. We have to show our intelligence, take in the good and filter out the bad.

A vida é engraçada.

Estou bem tranquilo, relaxado. Sigo treinando e focado.

In a recent conversation with GRACIEMAG.com, Rodrigo Minotauro stated that Jiu-Jitsu will be an important part of his fight with Brendan Schaub at the August 27 UFC Rio show.

In preparing for the big night, Mino will have the help of two-time absolute world champion Amaury Bitetti. After promoting the latest installment of his event, Bitetti Combat, Amaury went over to the Nogueira’s training center in Rio to help iron out their Jiu-Jitsu games.

“Josuel Distak called me to ask me to come over. Sylvio Behring and I will be helping Minotauro out. Jiu-Jitsu’s the priority,” the black belt told GRACIEMAG.com.

Jiu-Jitsu proved to be a fundamental part of Minotauro’s last two wins, against Tim Sylvia and Randy Couture. Both times Bitetti played a role in Minotauro’s training.

One who always stood out on the mats, a world champion of Jiu-Jitsu, André Galvão seeks the same success in MMA. However, the black belt suffered a painful setback on the way to his objective. Coming off a win over Jorge Patino two months ago, Galvão was unrecognizable against the undefeated Tyron Woodley at last weekend’s Strikeforce event. The poor performance cost him in suffering a knockout for the first time in his career and delays his dream of capturing the promotional belt.

In the following conversation with GRACIEMAG.com, the fighter comments on his mistakes and the big lesson derived from the trying moment he faces.

I read on Twitter that you didn’t prepare properly. Is that correct?

Tyron did everything just right and is to be congratulated. But what we do in training reflects in the fight. I accepted this matchup on four weeks notice. I’d just fought Macaco and was totally unfocused, taking care of my gym. Ed Soares (his manager) called me and I accepted right there and then. I feel I should have had outside advice. If I’d spoken with my coaches in Brazil, like Distak and Rogério Camões… If I’d spoken with Jacaré, Feijão or Anderson… I’m sure they’d have told me not to fight. But I ended up embracing the idea.

Did your move to the USA hinder you? Was this last fight too short after your fight with Macaco?

I thought I’d be ready. But as the weeks went by, I realized I wasn’t. I wasn’t at weight and couldn’t sleep right. I don’t have a house here in the USA yet and am sleeping a friend’s place. My thoughts were on finding a home, being far from my family, and on personal problems. I know saying that after the fact draws criticism and Tyron deserves his due credit, of course. But this sort of stuff influences the fight. I confess I was disappointed. Two weeks away from the fight, I was close to calling my manager to say I wasn’t well. But I said I’d fight and did.

Photo: Asther Lin

What was it like in the cage? What did you think of Tyron?

Tyron hits hard, but I don’t know if my being in such a bad state got in the way of my recovering from the punch. I don’t remember anything after the first punch. What you all saw me do I did on automatic pilot. He was one of the options as opponent for the Macaco fight, but he didn’t accept. I feel that’s what makes the difference. He’s doing things right, fighting once every five months. There has to be an interval between fights, at least three months. Anyone who trains knows that the ideal training camp lasts eight to nine weeks, at least. It was a mistake; I hope I don’t repeat it.

What’s the big lesson you derive from all this?

I feel the big lesson… There were many. I have to be near my family; I’ve been away from them for two months. I have to be with the right coaches. I was at Brandon Vera’s academy for three weeks, a great team, but the guys there didn’t know my game. And, very importantly, to say no. In MMA we’re always in there to win. Losses happen, of course, but I don’t need to go making it easy for bad luck to happen. I should have said no to this fight.

Now in the USA, how are you going to program your training?

The truth is it’s much easier to work in Brazil. But I made this decision and I have my gym here. Now Minotauro’s going to have a training center here and, if it seems right, I’ll end my training camp in Brazil. Anderson, Distak, Jacaré, Feijão, Corvo… Those are guys I trust and who motivate me. Training in Brazil is different. But I’m going to go after the best here to train with. I’m going to seek out the best trainers and take care of my gym. Everything will be fine. I have faith in God; I feel it was a learning experience, and I’m still in the hunt for the belt. That’s my dream and I’m going after it.
The post Galvão reflects and finds lessons in bitter defeat first appeared on Graciemag.

A má apresentação custou o primeiro nocaute sofrido e atrasa o sonho do cinturão.

Foto: Asther Lin

Qual a grande lição disso tudo?

O treino no Brasil é bem diferente.
The post Galvão reflete e vê lições numa dura derrota first appeared on Graciemag.
