BJJ can help the introverted among us get to know new people, strengthen ties and cultivate friendships. Renzo Gracie, notorious for his good mood, has an endless list of friends — but the value of a good enemy is not lost on him.

To the New York-based teacher, there’s no bigger motivator than a great rival to make you better and keep you on your toes, ready to face adversity as soon as it appears.

“A true enemy, the most loyal enemy my brother Ryan Gracie had, is called Jorge Patino ‘Macaco’,” Renzo told blogger Olivar Leite in an interview that went viral this month. “They fought many times. Whenever they saw each other, they’d brawl. And it was the reason Ryan kept himself in fighting shape. If Ryan became what he became, Macaco helped a lot. He had to be sharp, and that’s what makes you great. I wish I had more people like that in my life.”

Hatred and respect went hand in hand between Ryan, who died in 2007, and Macaco. “Have you ever heard Macaco say a bad thing about him?” Renzo said. “Ever heard him put Ryan down after his death, or gloat? But that’s because he belongs to BJJ, he is of the BJJ banner. People sometimes are puzzled by the love I have for Macaco. I am thankful to him.”

Renzo wrapped up with an anecdote from his own personal life. “To this day I help out a teacher who used to say fighting would take me to prison or to the cemetery,” he said. “To this day, when I write a book, I send her a copy and a card: ‘As soon as your book gets written, please send me a copy.’ You may think that’s mean, but one time she needed to have knee surgery, and through a friend I sent her the money to have it. I want her to keep thinking bad things about me. I need enemies — I got all the friends I need!”

No embalo do evento internacional do ADCC no Brasil, encerrado no domingo, a organização de lutas agarradas nascida em Abu Dhabi já prepara sua próxima cartada com um evento em terra tupiniquim.

Será o Troféu Brasil, que chega à sua terceira edição no dia 15 de novembro, em Barueri, São Paulo. O torneio terá chaves nas principais categorias do ADCC: 66kg, 77kg, 88kg, 99kg e acima de 99kg masculino. No feminino, as categorias serão até 60kg e acima de 60kg. Além disso, serão divididas em três níveis: iniciante, intermediário e profissional.

No profissional, cada campeão no masculino vai levar 2 mil reais para casa. No feminino profissional, o prêmio é de 1 mil reais.

A cereja do bolo do evento será a superluta do evento, um duelo entre Jorge Patino Macaco e Viscardi Andrade. Os atletas se encaram sem kimono, seguindo as regras unificadas do ADCC. Patino, cria da Chute Boxe, tem no Jiu-Jitsu sua base nas lutas, e é extensamente conhecido por sua carreira no MMA.

Viscardi, por sua vez, é atleta do UFC na divisão de meio-médios. Participou da terceira temporada do “TUF Brasil” e no Jiu-JItsu defende a bandeira da equipe Ryan Gracie. Quem vence, amigo leitor?

O campeonato traz aos competidores de todos os níveis a chance de se testar no formato do ADCC do evento e ainda levar um prêmio em dinheiro.

Em entrevista ao Combate.com, o matchmaker do evento, Ali Abdelaziz, revelou planos para realizar não um, mais dois eventos em território brazuca no ano de 2014, além de prometer uma batalha de peso para sua estreia: A trilogia entre os veteranos José Pelé Landi e Jorge Patino Macaco:

“Os dois querem se enfrentar de novo. O Macaco queria esta luta num peso mais baixo. O Pelé quer que seja nos meio-médios. Provavelmente vai ser nos 77kg”, disse o executivo.

Nos dois encontros anteriores, ainda na década de noventa, Pelé foi vitorioso, mas Macaco terá a chance de diminuir no placar. Ativo no MMA, no auge de seus 40 anos, o lendário Jorge Patino é faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu no quinto grau e luta desde 1995 nos cages e ringues da vida. Em 2013 realizou três combates, vencendo dois e sofrendo um revés.

Já Pelé, que é cubano erradicado no Brasil, vem fazendo, em média, uma atuação por ano no MMA. Com 27 vitórias e 15 derrotas no seu cartel, Landi-Jons terá a chance de fazer 3 a 0 sobre o temido rival.

Ali Abdelaziz não forneceu maiores informações, como data e local da primeira edição brasileira do WSOF.

No último sábado, 11 de maio, Jorge Patino Macaco subiu no decágono do evento MaxSport 13.2, em São Paulo, para encarar o ex-atleta do UFC e vencedor do The Ultimate Fighter 8, Efrain Escudero, com quem fez uma luta difícil, que foi para as mãos dos jurados. O brasileiro saiu vitorioso por decisão dividida.

Após um primeiro assalto bastante estudado, Macaco foi mais contundente no segundo round, aplicou algumas quedas e conseguiu entrar na guarda do mexicano. Escudero foi melhor nos minutos finais e marcou bastante o rosto do veterano da Macaco Gold Team, mas isso não foi o suficiente para lhe render um resultado positivo no cartel.

Com 40 anos, este é o quarto cinturão consecutivo que Macaco leva. Novo campeão do MaxSport, o lutador ganhou títulos no Predador FC, e em duas categorias do Legacy FC.

Efrain Escudero, por sua vez, ficou nitidamente contrariado com o resultado, e pediu revanche assim que se conectou pelas redes sociais. Através de Twitter, Facebook e Instagram, o mexicano afirmou que Macaco não venceu o combate e que espera que o adversário se coloque à disposição para um novo duelo. Este é o quarto revés seguido na carreira de Escudero, que não vence desde 2011.

O mexicano, que quase não conseguiu embarcar para o Brasil por falta de visto, falou ao GRACIEMAG.com sobre os desafios no MMA e qual a estratégia para voltar a vencer depois de três derrotas consecutivas,. O lutador ainda revelou grande admiração pelo companheiro de treinos Ben Henderson, que o acompanha neste desafio em São Paulo.

O Gigantinho,em Porto Alegre, ferveu nesta sexta-feira com a primeira edição do Kumite MMA Combate. O novo torneio trouxe boas lutas, que levantaram o público gaúcho.

Lutador dos primórdios do vale-tudo, José Pelé Landy adentrou à jaula gaúcha aos 38 anos de idade e mostrou que ainda tem muita lenha para queimar. O kickboxer chegou a passar dificuldades na primeira parcial, mas se recuperou no segundo giro, quando usou os cotovelos para acertar e abrir um ferimento na cabeça de Samuel Quito. Observado pelos médicos, Samuel foi impedido de continuar, o que obrigou o árbitro encerrar a peleja.

Na hora da entrevista, Pelé foi surprendido com um vídeo no telão de Jorge Patino Macaco, desafiando o curitibano para mais uma revanche. Pelé não pestanejou e aceitou o embate, cutucando o faixa-preta “Macaco, não dá né,” disse Pelé que já venceu Macaco em duas oportunidades. O combate esta programado para dezembro, na segunda edição do Kumite MMA Combate, que já confirmou Daniel Acácio contra Ryo Chonan.

Daniel Acácio, que vive um grande momento, mostrou suas garras contra Zezão Trator. O representante da CM System alcançou o triunfo depois de aplicar um quedão e acertar um cruzado que fez o paraense dobrar as pernas. Aí  bastou descer a marreta até o juiz interromper.

Já Eduardo Cachorrão pressionou o equatoriano Raul Jimenez e não demorou muito a derrubar. No chão, Jimenez mostrou que sabe Jiu-Jitsu e investiu nos ataques de braço, bem defendidos pelo cearense. Sem dar mole, Cachorrão bateu, passou a guarda, montou e voltou a meter o sarrafo, até o gringo virar de costas e ser finalizado com um mata-leão. “O Cara é macho, aceitou lutar comigo hoje,” exaltou Cachorrão

A luta feminina não ficou a dever em nada aos pegas masculinos. A dura Jennifer Maia mostrou que tem garra de sobra e resistiu, com o braço envergado, ao armlock aplicado por Vanessa Porto. O experiente árbitro do UFC Mario Yamasaki interveio para preservar a integridade física da casca-grossa.

This Friday at the Gigantinho gymnasium in Porto Alegre, Brazil, marked the maiden Kumite MMA Combate event, and the crowd that gathered for the spectacle wasn’t disappointed by what they saw.

A big name from the early days of MMA, José Pelé Landy entered the cage at 38 years of age and showed he’s still got it. The kickboxing stylist weathered an early storm in the first round but recovered by the second, when he landed elbows that opened a gash on his opponent Samuel Quito’s forehead. Quita was barred from continuing by the ringside doctors.

During his post-fight interview, Pelé was caught off guard by a video on the big screen with Jorge Patino “Macaco” calling him out for yet another rematch. Pelé didn’t blink, and promptly accepted. “Macaco, you haven’t got what it takes,” said Pelé, taunting the fighter, who he beat on their two prior encounters. The fight is now set for December, at the second Kumite MMA Combate event, where Daniel Acácio versus Ryo Chonan will also feature on the card.

Daniel Acácio, who is seeing some of the best performances of his career, made easy work of “Zezão Trator.” The CM System representative landed a takedown and later a hook that caused “Trator’s” legs to buckle. Acácio followed up with hammer fists until the referee broke up the fight.

Eduardo “Cachorrão” brought the pressure on Raul Jimenez, swiftly getting an early takedown. On the ground, Jimenez showed he knows his Jiu-Jitsu by launching some armbar attacks that “Cachorrão” did well to defend. Cachorrão then continued with ground and pound, passed guard, mounted, and continued raining down fists, until Jimenez turned on all fours and tapped to a rear-naked choke. “The guy’s tough, he accepted a fight with me today,” said Cachorrão in praise.

Now the female fight of the night was on par with those of the men. The game Jennifer Maia showed grit in refusing to tap out to a tight armbar from Vanessa Porto. Seasoned UFC referee Mario Yamasaki stepped in to protect her physical integrity.

After the result from his June 27 fight against Nik Lentz was overturned, Charles do Bronx took no rest. On August 14 the brown belt will be right back in the mix at UFC on Versus 5, facing Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, who is riding a four-fight win streak. Interviewed by GRACIEMAG.com, Bronx doesn’t let the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission that annulled his seventh triumph off the hook.

You admit you threw an illegal knee but the fight wasn’t stopped and you tapped out Nik Lentz. On the occasion you took the “fight of the night” prize. What are your thoughts about them changing the result to a no contest?

Shoot, what happened is that they gave me the win. The right thing to do was to have the ref stop the fight, at most penalize me a point, and let the fight start again. But no, the fight continued. I know it’s not the UFC’s fault, but it is the Athletic Commission’s; I think they were too hard on me. Jon Jones threw an illegal elbow, the judge stopped the fight, the athlete didn’t return to fight but they gave Jon Jones the win. Jon Jones threw an illegal knee on Shogun, everybody saw it, but they gave the win to Jon Jones. So I don’t understand why they went an overturned the result on my fight. But that’s alright, I’m happy with what’s going on in my life, on to the next one. It’s all in the past and now I’m focused on Cerrone.

Once again you’re going to fight in the UFC with almost no breaks between bouts. Is that good or bad?

I’m fine, focused. When I joined the UFC I said I wanted to fight the best, and that’s exactly what I’m doing. Cerrone is one of the top guys in the division and that’s precisely what I want. I’m ready and happy for every fight I get, especially against the toughest guys in the division. I’m going to work double time in preparing for this next fight compared to the last one and I’m glad for the opportunity.

What are your thoughts on Cerrone?

He’s taller than me, which could make it easier to shoot in on his legs for takedowns. I also don’t think he’s that good standing, so we’ll see, I have to feel how the fight goes when I’m in there. He has a good ground game, with 12 submissions in 15 wins. It’ll be a tough fight and I’m dying to get in there. He wants to beat me; I want to be him; so it’ll go off.

How’s your training going?

I’m still training here in Brazil with the kids at Bronx’s Gold Team. Between the 25th and 30th I’ll head to the United States to train with Macaco. I’ll be ready once again.

Depois de ter o resultado da luta no dia 27 de junho anulado, contra Nik Lentz, Charles do Bronx não descansa. Você admite que aplicou uma joelhada ilegal, mas a luta continuou e você finalizou Nik Lentz. Na ocasião, recebeu até o prêmio pela melhor luta da noite. O que achou de depois terem mudado o resultado para no contest?

Pô, o que aconteceu é que eles me deram a vitória. O certo era o juiz parar a luta, no máximo tirar um ponto meu, e voltar o combate. Mas não, a luta continuou. Sei que não é culpa do UFC e sim da Comissão Atlética, mas acho que pegaram pesado comigo. O Jon Jones deu uma cotovelada ilegal, o juiz parou e o atleta não voltou, mas deram a vitória para o Jon Jones. O Jon Jones deu uma joelhada ilegal no Shogun, todo mundo viu, mas deram a vitória para o Jon Jones. Então não entendi essa anulação justamente na minha luta. Mas tudo bem, estou feliz com o que vem acontecendo na minha vida e vamos para a próxima. Isso já passou e agora estou focado no Cerrone.

Mais uma vez, você luta no UFC quase sem descanso entre um combate e outro. Isso é bom ou ruim?

Estou bem, focado. Quando entrei no Ultimate, disse que queria lutar contra os melhores, e é exatamente isso o que está acontecendo. O Cerrone é um dos tops da categoria e é exatamente isso o que eu quero. Estou pronto e feliz por cada luta que vem, principalmente contra os caras fortes da categoria. Vou me preparar para essa luta em dobro em relação à última e estou feliz por mais essa oportunidade.

O que acha do Cerrone?

Ele é mais alto, pode facilitar entrar nas pernas para colocar para baixo. Também não acho ele tão bom na trocação, então vamos ver, tenho que sentir a luta na hora. Ele tem o chão bom, com 12 finalizações em 15 vitórias. É uma luta dura e vai ser louco lá dentro. Ele quer me vencer, eu quero vencê-lo, então vai pegar fogo.

Como segue o treinamento?

Sigo treinando aqui no Brasil com a molecada na Bronx’s Gold Team e lá para o dia 25 ou 30 viajo para os Estados Unidos para trabalhar com o Macaco. Estarei pronto mais uma vez.

Shelley, who recently became two times World No-Gi champion, tells us in his Facebook page that his first black belt Hector Munoz prooved to have all the qualities of a great champion.

“Munoz was asked at the last minute to be in a No-Gi superfight against Brazilian Jorge Patino “Macaco” at the Grapplers World War event. He was prepared to fight in his category but did not back down and faced a 200+lb Macaco weighting only 167lb.”

Macaco ended up winning the fight, but Munoz came out of the bout also victorious for his sportmanship and warrior spirit.

Congrats to Shelley and Munoz for representing the true spirit of BJJ.
