A primeira vez de kimono ninguém esquece. O ator Joe Rogan nunca teve medo de enfrentar o desconhecido. Em 1994, o comediante nascido em Nova Jersey foi morar em Los Angeles, mais perto das grandes emissoras e estúdios. Rogan estava perto de conhecer o estrelato com a sitcom “NewsRadio”. Mas nada o impressionaria mais que aquele treino inaugural numa escola com visual japonês, na área de Pico Boulevard. Ao chegar, ele viu que o instrutor tinha um nome marcante: Rickson.

Rogan era um estudioso. Começou no karatê, e aos 19 anos tornou-se campeão americano peso leve de taekwondo. Curioso em relação às joelhadas, passou a lutar full-contact e muay thai. Até que viu uma fita VHS mal gravada, com vitórias fulminantes dos Gracie.

“Treinei na escola de Rickson apenas uma semana”, contou em seu podcast. “Depois notei que existia outra academia Gracie mais perto de casa, e supus que era tudo a mesma coisa. Perdi a senhora chance de treinar com o grande Rickson Gracie durante seus tempos de astro do vale-tudo no Japão”.

Naquele dia, o hoje entrevistador do UFC viu outro mundo se abrir.

“Até os anos 1980 o taekwondo parecia nos bastar para nos defendermos. Quando me apresentaram o muay thai e o boxe, vi que havia mais, e já apanhei um pouco. Quando veio o Jiu-Jitsu, percebi que eu sabia muito menos do que imaginava”, refletiu Rogan, que se tornaria faixa-preta em 2012, graduado por Eddie Bravo.

“Naquela semana no dojo de Rickson, fui treinar com outro rapaz, um faixa-roxa. Deus, o cara fez o que quis comigo, me finalizou, me estrangulou como quis, e eu não acreditava no que acontecia. Repare, o cara não era muito maior que eu. O cara não era assim tão mais jovem que eu. E eu estava em plena forma física, eu era um sujeito forte. Eu não tinha nenhuma desculpa. Tomei um banho de realidade e de humildade. Ali eu tive uma prova cabal do que o Jiu-Jitsu era capaz de fazer, do que aquela família incrível chamada Gracie tinha a ensinar ao mundo. E saí daquele treino certo de que precisava aprender aquela arte maravilhosa.”

The World MMA Awards, widely regarded as being the Oscars of MMA, was held Friday night in Las Vegas. On the occasion, Jon Jones and Ronda Rousey received trophies for being elected the best fighters of the year.

“Best Coach” honors went to the Brazilian Rafael Cordeiro for the work he has been doing at his Los Angeles academy Kings MMA, beating head coach of Team Nova União Dedé Pederneiras, who was also in the running.

The prize for “Best Submission” went to Frank Mir for his arm-splitting keylock on Rodrigo Minotauro in December 2011.

Brazil’s Edson Barboza was credited with having performed the “Best Knockout,” for the spinning kick that put Terry Etim’s lights out while still on his feet at UFC Rio 2. Cesar Gracie’s academy was honored with the prize for best MMA Gym of the Year.

“Revelation of the Year” honors went to UFC middleweight Chris Weidman, who edged out Renan Barão.
