The GMA Choke Academy under Joao Pedro Santos  in Copenhagen, Denmark traveled to Roskilde, Denmark for the Roskilde Open on May 25th. With 13 students competing they managed to bring home 19 medals along with the team trophy after earning a large margin of points ahead of the second place.

The Roskilde Open, in a city known for its summer festival, had its first edition and the team traveled right outside of their booming city to participate.

Here are the highlights from the team:

Jesper Bendtsen: Blue 94kg gold
Immo Söllner: White 100kg gold and Absolute silver
Ehsan Faizzad: White 70kg silver and Absolute bronze
Peter Keller Hansen: Master White 88kg gold, Absolute silver

About:

Choke Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was established in 2004. We are the most traditional BJJ organization in Denmark and the only group that is directly connected to the Gracie Family in Brazil and in the United States. In fact, when the Gracies come to Scandinavia they usually train and teach at our schools.

We have two schools – Copenhagen & Århus – and over 250 members.

Our founder and head instructor is Professor Joao Pedro Santos, who is a second degree black belt under 7th degree Carlson Gracie disciple Sergio “Bolao” Souza.

The name Choke is short, strong and relates directly to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. According to Grand Master Helio Gracie, it is also the most powerful move in Jiu-Jitsu . It was suggested by Morten Pedersen, one of our first students.

Our logo is evidently based on the traditional Gracie Academy logo that’s been used in Brazil for almost a century. There are three equilateral triangles inside the circle. They represent balance and connection to our roots.

GMA member team Choke BJJ, under black belt João Pedro Santos competed recently at the Danish Open Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

The event was held on February 11th-12th at the the city of Hillerød.

It is the largest and most important competion in Denmark, organized annually by Professor Shimon Mochizuki.

The event brought together over 300 competitors from Scandinavian countries.

Choke had 23 students from Copenhagen and Århus and conquered 18 medals, being nine golds.

The team also secured three absolute divisions.

The highlight performances were by Tajs Kolman (2 golds), Anne Buch Møller (2 golds), Christian Vester (2 golds), Sabine Reinsch (1 Silver and 1 Bronze) and Christian Storm (1 Gold).

“Some of our students took part in the Helsingborg Open of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu on Saturday, Feb 13th. The Choke Team won four medals in the event: three golds and one silver. Michael Pedersen (Brown 76kg), Peter Månsson (Blue 76kg Junior) and Alexander Carlsson (White 76kg Junior) won their divisions, whereas Emil Mattsson got second place in his (Blue 69kg Junior).”

Besides the medalists, Santos also congratulated the effort of his students: “It’s worth mentioning the efforts of Martin Mellemkjær, Simon Månsson, Gabriel Jacobsson and Nicolaj Garde, who was one of the favorites to win his division (Purple 88kg) but injured his knee in an accidental fall in the first seconds of the first match.”
