Não é de hoje que o UFC tenta de diversas formas conseguir a legalização do MMA em Nova York. O estado é o maior centro financeiro, cultural e comercial dos Estados Unidos e conta com mais de 20 milhões de habitantes. Além disso, é na cidade de Nova York que está o Madison Square Garden, uma arena que recebe até 30 mil pessoas em um jogo de basketball, por exemplo. O lugar é conhecido como a “Meca” dos eventos, e comemorar os 20 anos de UFC com um grande card lá, era tudo o que a organização queria.

Mesmo com o apoio do Senado, a Assembleia Estadual continua não permitindo  a votação do projeto de lei para a liberação do MMA, e ao que tudo indica muita água ainda correrá por debaixo desta ponte.

Mas tem que diga que a culpa desta não aprovação é do próprio Dana White. O ex-lutador do Ultimate Jason Miller é um dos que pensam assim. Em seu Twitter o americano respondeu a uma indagação do dirigente, perguntando por que a Comissão Atlética de Nova York não regulamentava o MMA. Miller aproveitou a deixa e disparou:

“Eu já sei porque (o MMA) não é legal em Nova York, Dana White. Você barra todas as tentativas de sindicalização dos lutadores e demite todo mundo que sugere uma união. Os sindicatos são sediados em Nova York e você não pode entrar lá sem baixar a cabeça para eles. Como seu ego inflado não vai permitir isso, você queima o filme de pessoas inteligentes enquanto segue sua marcha rumo ao monopólio”.

A relação de Dana White e Jason Miller e só piorou após a demissão do atleta.

Uma escola sem dinheiro, que precisa cortar gastos para sair do buraco e um professor de biologia hilário e casca-grossa. Essa é a trama do filme “Professor da Pesada” (“Here comes the boom”), que estreia nos cinemas dos Estados Unidos no próximo dia 12 de outubro.

No longa, o ator Kevin James vive Scott Voss, um professor trapalhão que procura uma saída para salvar o colégio em que dá aulas. Numa das tentativas, ele descobre, graças a um amigo (Bas Rutten), que pode arrecadar um bom dinheiro lutando MMA, além de estimular seus alunos a batalhar por aquilo que desejam. Entre treinos duros e engraçados, o mestre vai literalmente à luta.

O filme é dirigido por Frank Coraci, e conta no elenco com Henry Winkler, Salma Hayek, Joe Rogan, Mike Goldberg, Greg Germann, Mark Munõz, Bruce Buffer, Jason Miller e Krzysztof Soszynski.

Vale lembrar que Kevin treina Jiu-Jitsu com Rominho Barral, em Los Angeles. Para o filme, o astro treinou MMA com Rafael Cordeiro, técnico curitibano radicado na Califa.

“Apareço no filme e isso vai provar que não sou apenas um rostinho bonito (risos). Acho que o filme será um divisor de águas por se tratar de um filme de MMA com atores consagrados de Hollywood. A bankrupt school needing to cut costs to dig itself out of a financial hole, and a hilarious but big-time-tough biology teacher—that’s the plot for “Here Comes the Boom”, opening at US movie theaters this October 12.

In the feature film, Kevin James plays the part of Scott Voss, a goofy teacher looking for a way to save the school where he works. In one of his attempts, he finds out through a friend (Bas Rutten) that he can earn good money doing MMA, while also stimulating his students to fight for what they want. Between grueling but side-splitting training sessions, the master literally goes to battle.

The film is directed by Frank Coraci, and the cast includes the likes of Henry Winkler, Salma Hayek, Joe Rogan, Mike Goldberg, Greg Germann, Mark Munõz, Bruce Buffer, Jason Miller and Krzysztof Soszynski.

Also noteworthy is the fact that Kevin trains Jiu-Jitsu with Rômulo Barral in Los Angeles. In preparing for the movie, James practiced MMA with Rafael Cordeiro, a highly regarded coach from Curitiba, Brazil, now living in California himself.

“I appear in the film, which goes to show that I’m not just another pretty face (laugh). I feel the movie is going to be a watershed because it’s an MMA movie with established Hollywood actors. I feel everyone will be impressed by how he trains in it,” Rafael Cordeiro told the ManiaMMA.com.br website.

UFC 146 is going down this Saturday in Las Vegas, and there’s no shortage of expectations surrounding what’s about to transpire there. In the main event of the evening, heavyweight title-holding knockout artist Junior Cigano has a high-caliber Jiu-Jitsu specialist in Frank Mir challenging him for his strap.

With his crisp boxing, to nine out of ten experts the current champ is the odds-on favorite to keep his title—the GRACIEMAG.com team too is convinced another “Cigano” win is imminent.

The opinion is shared by Gilbert “Durinho” Burns, who has the utmost confidence in his friend and boxing coach Luiz Dórea, and his money is on a knockout from the reigning title holder.

“Cigano is a monster of an athlete, and he began his career in Jiu-Jitsu. Rodrigo Artilheiro was with me at the TUF Brazil house, and he mentioned how crazy his endurance is. He’s 28 years old, started at 22—he hasn’t been in MMA long but has already shown what he’s made of. I don’t think this one leaves the first round—Cigano drops him. But even if it does go longer, Cigano is in much better physical shape than Frank Mir,” opined Durinho, echoing statements made by Mir, to whom the longer the fight goes, the better.

If you were in Frank Mir’s place, what would you do? What would you do against a fighter with heavy hands and pinpoint accuracy?

“If I were Mir, I’d try to take him to the ground. I’d try to clinch, get the takedown. I’d try to be Rousimar “Toquinho” in there; I’d attack his heel, and always stay clear of Cigano’s hands. To beat a monster like that, you have to frenetically work at taking it to the ground. I’d work on improving my footwork, get good at faking punches and try capitalizing from the clinch. Training would have to be like this: getting the takedown, working on wrestling and going for the foot when on the ground,” said Gilbert in analysis.

The TUF Brazil participant doesn’t, however, feel Mir will be successful in his mission.

“I expect a first-round knockout from the Brazilian. Cigano’s punching is really crisp, he’s healthier for being younger, he has the confidence from being champion and he does an excellent job. All Cigano has to do is be calm and fight,” wagered the 2011 Jiu-Jitsu lightweight champion of the world.

“I think Frank Mir is going to mess up after the first punch lands. Being the champion, in my opinion Cigano doesn’t even need to press the action; he can just be calm, do his footwork and jab, because the knockout will surface,” said the black belt training partner of Vitor Belfort in closing.

O UFC 146 que rola neste sábado, em Las Vegas, vem cheio de expectativas. No combate principal da noite, o campeão dos pesados e nocauteador Junior Cigano encara o desafiante bom de Jiu-Jitsu Frank Mir.

Dono de um boxe afiadíssimo, o atual campeão é apontado por nove entre dez especialistas como o favorito para esta peleja – a equipe do GRACIEMAG.com também aposta em Cigano, aliás.

Se o chão de Cigano ainda é uma incógnita no UFC, para alguns faixas-pretas de Jiu-Jitsu isso não fará a menor diferença na luta. A verdade é que poucos estão acreditando no queixo de Frank Mir nessa luta.

É o que acha Gilbert “Durinho” Burns, que diz confiar plenamente no amigo e treinador Luiz Dórea e aposta em nocaute do atual campeão.

“O Cigano é um monstro de atleta, e começou a carreira no Jiu-Jitsu. O Rodrigo Artilheiro estava comigo na casa do TUF Brasil e comentou que ele tem um gás sinistro. Ele tem 28 anos, começou com 22, tem pouco tempo de MMA mas já mostrou o seu valor. Eu acho que não passa do primeiro round, o Cigano derruba, mas mesmo se passar as condições físicas do Cigano são bem melhores que a do Frank Mir”, opina Durinho, ecoando declarações de Mir, para quem quanto mais durasse a luta, melhor.

E se você estivesse no lugar do Frank Mir? O que faria contra um lutador de mão pesada e certeira?

“Se eu fosse o Mir, eu tentaria derrubar, tentaria o clinche, a queda. Eu tentaria ser um Rousimar Toquinho ali, atacar o calcanhar, e sempre ficar muito esperto com a mão do Cigano. Para ganhar de um monstro assim, só se você trabalhar freneticamente na movimentação para botar para baixo. Eu teria de melhorar minha movimentação de perna, fintar muito bem e tentar aproveitar o clinche. O treino teria de ser este, botar para quedar, trabalhar o wrestling e no chão embolar no pé”, analisa Gilbert.

O participante do TUF Brasil, no entanto, não acredita que Mir será bem-sucedido na dura missão.

“Minha expectativa é de nocaute no primeiro round para o brasileiro. O Cigano está com a mão muito afiada, tem mais saúde por ser mais novo, tem a confiança de ser o campeão e tem um jogo de perna muito bom, vai ser nocaute. Confio no treinador Luiz Dórea, que fez um excelente trabalho. Basta o Cigano entrar tranquilo para lutar”, aposta o campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu peso leve em 2011.

“Acho que o Frank Mir vai errar depois de entrar o primeiro soco. Como campeão, na minha opinião o Cigano nem precisa buscar a luta, tem de ficar tranquilo, trabalhando seu jogo de perna, jabeando, porque o nocaute vai aparecer”, conclui o faixa-preta parceiro de Vitor Belfort.

This Saturday, the TUF Finale 14 saw two new athletes enter the UFC fray with a bang, not to mention the showdown between the two coaches of the show: Michael Bisping, who was himself a winner of the reality show, and the controversy-causing Jason Miller. It was the show’s farewell to Spike TV. Now TUF will be produced by Fox television network, while a Brazilian version of the show will be broadcast by Globo.

With strained relations between them when TUF was being recorded, Bisping and Miller were finally face to face in the cage. First round action saw Miller nearly achieve mount on the Englishman but expend a lot of energy in doing so. Somewhat awkwardly, Miller suffered an onslaught of strikes in the second stanza. With five rounds to work with, Bisping cut the encounter short in the third, punishing his foe with strikes and following up dishing out further punishment on the ground. Miller was rendered defenseless, and the referee called an end to the action. With the outcome, the best English fighter on the scene at present notched his fourth win in a row, placing him closer to a potential title showdown with Anderson Silva.

In determining the winner of the TUF featherweight division this season, Diego Brandão made history. In a back-and-forth affair with Dennis Bermudez, Diego started out eating shots in the standup action but replied in kind with a knockdown and well-timed takedown. Soon thereafter, though, Brandão took a hard hit that knocked him down and created the impression that all was lost. But when Bermudez took his chances with ground and pound, Diego pulled a picture-perfect armbar out of his sleeve and obliged his opponent to tap out. Having three first-round knockouts on the show in the lead-up to the final, the black belt finally showed his Jiu-Jitsu is still up to par.

“Now I’m going to buy a house for my mom,” he declared after the fight.

Diego is another MMA ace from the Brazilian city of Manaus in the UFC featherweight division, now dominated by his fellow Amazonas-state native José Aldo.

The TUF bantamweight title fight saw TJ Dillashaw and John Dodson face off in a quick affair. TJ, a wrestler, insisted in standing and trading–Dodson’s area of expertise. The result was a technical knockout win for striker Dodson in less than two minutes of action.

O TUF Finale 14 definiu, neste sábado, mais dois atletas que chegam com moral no UFC, além de trazer o combate entre os treinadores da edição Michael Bisping, que também já venceu o reality show, e o polêmico Jason Miller. Foi a última vez do evento na Spike TV. Agora o TUF será produzido pela Fox, além de ter uma edição no Brasil, na Globo.

Depois de uma relação difícil durante as gravações do TUF, finalmente Bisping e Miller estiveram frente a frente. Na primeira parcial, Miller chegou perto da montada contra o inglês, mas gastou muita energia. Meio atabalhoado, levou muitos golpes de Bisping na segunda parcial. A luta era programada para cinco rounds, mas no terceiro Michael acabou definindo. Depois de castigar na trocação, seguiu batendo o adversário ao chão. Miller mal se defendia, então só restou ao juiz interromper. Com o resultado, o melhor lutador inglês em ação na atualidade chaga à quarta vitória em sequência, mais próximo de uma disputa de cinturão contra Anderson Silva.

Na definição do campeão da edição do TUF entre os pesos penas, Diego Brandão fez história. Numa luta cheia de reviravoltas contra Dennis Bermudez, Diego começou levando a pior na trocação, mas depois respondeu com um knockdown e uma bela queda. Logo depois do bom momento, sofreu um duro soco, caiu em knockdown e dava a impressão de que tudo estava perdido. Mas, quando Bermudez se arriscava no ground and pound, Diego tirou um armlock perfeito e obrigou o oponente a dar os três tapinhas. Depois de três nocautes no primeiro round durante o programa, o faixa-preta mostrou que também está com o Jiu-Jitsu afiado.

“Agora vou poder dar uma casa para a minha mãe”, declarou.

Diego é mais uma fera de Manaus na categoria de penas do Ultimate, hoje dominada por outro lutador da cidade do Amazonas, José Aldo.

Na divisão de galos, TJ Dillashaw e John Dodson disputavam a vaga no UFC. TJ, especialista em wrestling, insistiu na trocação, a área de Dodson. O resultado foi o nocaute técnico a favor de Dodson em menos de dois minutos de luta.

Another season of The Ultimate Fighter reality show comes to a close this coming Saturday, December 3, and there’s a Brazilian in the running to be one of the champions of the show’s 14th season.

A native of the Brazilian state of Amazonas, Diego Brandão has been turning heads with his performances on the program. The featherweight, who boasts 13 wins in his 20-fight career, knocked out three opponents in the first round. He will take on the USA’s Dennis Bermudez in the grand finale this Saturday. The veteran Yves Edwards is another of the evening’s attractions.

In the lightweight final John Dodson takes on TJ Dillashaw, while the coaches of the blue and orange teams, Michael Bisping and Jason Miller, will do battle in the world’s most famous cage.

O reality show The Ultimate Fighter, chega ao final de mais uma temporada neste sábado, dia 3 de dezembro e tem brasileiro no confronto que vai decidir o campeão da 14ª edição.

O amazonense Diego Brandão, mais conhecido por Ceará, vem impressionando no programa. O peso-pena nocauteou três oponentes no primeiro round e conta com 13 vitórias em 20 lutas na carreira. Ele vai enfrentar o americano Dennis Bermudez na finalíssima de sábado. O veterano Yves Edwards é outra atração.

Na divisão dos leves Jonh Dodson encara TJ Dillashaw, enquanto os treinadores das equipes azul e laranja, Michael Bisping e Jason Miller, vão se digladiar na gaiola mais famosa do mundo.

Vitor Belfort has an encounter with Yoshihiro Akiyama set for August 6 at UFC 133 in Philadelphia. The fighter addressed the matchup on the R7 website and made his displeasure with Wanderlei Silva clear.

“Now it’s official, we’re going to headline UFC 133,” Belfort is quoted as saying.

“I expect it to be a good fight. He’s a really tough and durable athlete. It has all the makings of a good, lively fight,” he added, before going on to address the hullabaloo surrounding the matchup he was supposed to have had with Wanderlei Silva.

“The facts are what matter. It was bad on him having called me out. An athlete of his level talking like that. . . He lacked respect. But his tongue turned on him, it looked bad. Wanderlei challenged me, talked a bunch of crap, and when it came down to it he said he wasn’t ready? Then don’t challenge me, keep quiet. It’s important to think before talking, but that’s life.”

Minotouro matched with Rich Franklin

The two are coming of a loss and will face off at the same event as Belfort and Akiyama, UFC 133. Rogério Minotouro lost to Phil Davis at UFC 24, while Rich Franklin came up short against Forrest Griffin at UFC 126. Now they will figure on the main card in Philadelphia.

Jason Miller returns to UFC

On his only UFC appearance, at the 52nd installment of the show, Jason Miller came up short against Georges Saint-Pierre back in 2005. Since then the fiesty fighter made a name for himself at events like Dream and Strikeforce, where he also stirred up a good deal of controversy. Since Zuffa’s purchase of Strikefoce, Miller is the first fighter from the organization to step over to the promotion led by Dana White and the Fertittas.

The star of MTV reality show Bully Beatdown will make his promotional reappearance against Aaron Simpson July 7 at UFC 132. During a recent visit to Brazil he taught a position for his fans on GRACIEMAG.com.

Vitor Belfort já tem marcado o encontro contra Yoshihiro Akiyama para o UFC 133, que acontece no dia 6 de agosto, na Philadelphia. O lutador falou sobre o desafio em entrevista ao site R7 e não poupou nas declarações contra Wanderlei Silva.

“Agora é oficial, nós vamos fazer a luta principal do UFC 133”, comenta Belfort.

“Olha, espero que façamos um bom combate. Ele é um atleta muito duro e resistente. Tem tudo para ser uma boa luta, bem movimentada”, completa o Fenômeno, antes de falar sobre a novela que envolveu seu suposto confronto contra Wanderlei Silva.

“O que importa são os fatos. Ficou muito feio para ele pela maneira como ele me desafiou, como se colocou. Um atleta do nível dele falando daquele jeito… Foi falta de respeito. Mas a língua voltou contra ele, ficou mal. O Wanderlei me desafiou, falou todas aquelas bobagens e, na hora que ia acontecer, falou que não estava preparado? Então não desafiasse, ficasse quieto. Pensar antes de falar é importante, mas a vida é assim.”

Minotouro encara Rich Franklin

Ambos vêm de derrota e se encaram no mesmo evento de Belfort x Akiyama, o UFC 133. Rogério Minotouro foi batido por Phil Davis no UFN 24, enquanto Rich Franklin parou diante de Forrest Griffin no Ultimate 126. A luta faz parte do card principal na Philadelphia.

Jason Miller volta ao UFC

Na única apresentação no Ultimate, na 52ª edição, Jason Miller acabou superado por Georges St-Pierre, em 2005. Two-time absolute world champion and owner of the Strikeforce under-84 kg belt Ronaldo Jacaré has another challenge coming up on January 29. According to MMAWeekly.com, the black belt will defend his middleweight title against Robbie Lawler at the same show Fedor Emelianenko will headline against Antonio “Pezão”, in San Jose, California.

The Brazilian is coming off a unanimous-decision win over Tim Kennedy, and Robbie Lawler is coming off a devastating knockout win in just fifty seconds over Matt Lindland last December 4.

Featured at the same event is a bout between Tim Kennedy and Jason “Mayhem” Miller.
