Each day more big names register to compete at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu Tour Los Angeles.

The latest list of names included the likes of Roberto Cyborg, Jackson Souza, Mackenzie Dern, Gregor Gracie, Rolles Gracie.

Before that, Leandro Lo, Paulo Miyao and Erberth Santos had already confirmed presence at the event organized by the UAEJJF and scheduled October 18.

The final deadline for registration is Oct. 12.

Black belts in the adult and master divisions have free registration at this event.

All they need to do is register normally and then send an email message to grandslam@uaejjf.org with the following data.

O Las Vegas Open de Jiu-Jitsu foi realizado no último sábado, dia 3 de maio, e o astro do dia foi Jackson Souza, da Checkmat, mordendo o ouro duas vezes na competição, uma no peso e outra no absoluto.

No peso aberto, Jackson fez três lutas. Primeiro ele pegou Nathan Mendelsohn na chave de perna, depois foi a vez de Kalifa Oliveira sucumbir na chave de braço.

Na final, Jackson encarou Samir Chantre, da Caio Terra Assossiation. Chantre chegou à final após pegar Eliot Kelly na mão-de-vaca.

O combate pelo título começou com Jackson, que puxou pra guarda e trabalhou para raspar, enquanto Chantre tentava a passagem. Por cima, Jackson botou pressão e passou, depois montou e escorregou para as costas. Samir defendeu bravamente as tentativas de finalização de Jackson pelas costas, e conseguiu sair do sufoco ao raspar. O atleta da Checkmat ainda raspou mais uma vez antes do apito final, que contabilizava sua vitória por 15 a 4.

Os outros resultados na faixa preta são:

Yuri Simões finalizou Chris Engle pelas costas na final do superpesado, Jackson Souza pegou Antonio Antonioli no Ezequiel pelo peso pesado, Thiago Silva fez 4 a 0 em Bruno Antunes no meio pesado, sendo que os último dois pontos vieram por Antunes escapar da área de luta ao tentar defender uma chave de pé.

Em menos de 30s, Marcelo Mafra pegou Lucas Rocha na chave de pé pelo ouro no peso médio, Francisco Iturralde finalizou Osvaldo Moizinho na chave de joelho no peso leve.

Rafa Mendes pegou dois armlocks para chegar à final no peso-pena, de Gerson Atoigue e Nicholas Araújo, respectivamente. Gui Mendes repetiu a dose do irmão, ao finalizar suas duas últimas lutas também com um mesmo golpe, no caso dele o estrangulamento. As vítimas foram Davin Maxwell e Vitor Paschoal. No fim, Rafael ficou com o ouro.

No peso-pluma, Gabriel Moraes foi o campeão, ao superar Gustavo Carpio por 1 a 0 nas vantagens, após empatar em 4 a 4 nos pontos.

No feminino faixa-preta, um retorno feliz. Após quase seis anos longe das competições, Ana Laura cordeiro, da Gracie Barra, chegou na final para finalizar Charlene Coats pelas costas, conquistando o ouro no meio-pesado.

Com apenas quatro meses de faixa-preta, o talento do Cantagalo Jackson Sousa conquistou seu primeiro grande título na graduação. Aluno de Ricardinho Vieira, Jackson brilhou no Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu, no último domingo em Lisboa, capital de Portugal.

Peso pesado, Jack fisgou a medalha de ouro no peso em grande luta com Yuri Simões. De quebra, voltou com o bronze no absoluto, onde eliminou feras como Lucio Lagarto (GB).

O que ele aprendeu com a estreia gloriosa na faixa-preta? GRACIEMAG foi descobrir.

GRACIEMAG: Como um novato ignora a experiência contra tantos faixas-pretas bons?

JACKSON SOUSA: Eu já me sinto bem à vontade com minha nova graduação, e acho que o segredo é você treinar forte e sempre voltado para a competição. Tática é importante, e sempre uso uma mentalidade de campeão: procuro imaginar como vou fazer minha comemoração, procuro mentalizar a vitória antes. Talvez seja a vontade de vencer. Sei que, em todas as minhas lutas, mostrei um Jiu-Jitsu diferente, sempre para a frente.

Qual foi o seu momento mais complicado em Lisboa?

Lutar duas vezes com o Yuri Simões, hoje na equipe Brasa Caio Terra. Somos amigos e já fomos da mesma equipe, fechamos juntos categoria e absoluto na faixa-azul e roxa em competições. E considero muito a família dele, a tia Deise e o tio Marcio. Convivemos muito, sempre ia à casa dele. Fiquei triste com essa situação de lutar com um amigo, e acredito que ele também, mas temos de ser profissionais dentro e fora do tatame. Ele optou por ir para outra equipe e infelizmente somos da mesma categoria.

Você perdeu para o Yuri na semifinal do absoluto, e depois venceu na final dos pesados. Como analisa as lutas, Jack?

Na semifinal do absoluto, não deu nada errado. Fomos gladiadores ali dentro e ele teve a chance de conseguir a queda na luta, me surpreendendo. Depois teve a parte de administrar a luta até o final. Eu tentei o tempo todo, mas perdi. Já na categoria, tentei usar meu judô para derrubá-lo, mas ele estava com uma boa postura e não consegui a queda. Então resolvi puxá-lo para a guarda e tentar raspar, mesmo assim ele manteve uma boa base e fez uma vantagem. Quando tivemos de novo a oportunidade de trocar em pé, consegui a queda chamada “safadinha”, no instante em que Yuri tentava me puxar para a guarda. A safadinha me ajudou a vencê-lo.

No absoluto, você venceu feras do calibre de Lucio Lagarto, campeão europeu superpesado em Lisboa. Qual foi a sensação de lutar o absoluto recheado de estrelas?

A sensação foi de mais um objetivo conquistado. Sempre imaginei lutar duas categorias quando pegasse a faixa-preta. Fiz um excelente trabalho no absoluto junto com meu amigo Alexander Trans, campeão do absoluto. Fiquei em terceiro lugar geral, depois de perder na semifinal. No absoluto só tinha astros, como Lucio Lagarto, Igor Silva, Ricardo Evangelista, Yuri e outros. O Lagarto é um excelente atleta, gosto muito dele. Tenho o maior respeito por ele e sua equipe na Inglaterra. A vitória sobre o Lagarto foi duríssima, venci por 2 a 0 com uma queda. A luta só foi desenvolvida nos cinco minutos finais, pois ficamos a maior parte do tempo tentando trocar queda. Depois que derrubei fiquei na parte de administração da luta.

O que você aprendeu em seu primeiro Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu na faixa-preta?

Acredito que o meu judô ajudou muito a vencer, na categoria e absoluto. Ele dá uma melhora fundamental no meu jogo. Aconselho todo lutador de competição a procurar se aprofundar no judô e na parte de quedas, pois isso ajuda muito nas competições.

Four days from the day of the event, the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo keeps breaking news on the super-fight roster.

Turns out Rousimar Toquinho is out of the battle against Dean Lister, but the WJJE already came up with another warrior to face the Boogeyman.

2010 World champion, the Alliance star agreed to fight Lister in a 20-minute no-gi match where submissions are the only way to win.

The WJJE takes place this weekend, Nov. 9-10, at the Long Beach Convention Center.

The World Jiu-Jitsu Expo has published the list of 16 brown-belts who will be fighting in the event’s new Grand Prix, slated for November 9 and 10 in LongBeach, Calif.

Besides the 16 brown belt aces, among them a bunch of world champs, the Renzo Gracie-promoted show will feature another GP with only black-belts who have achieved that status under two years ago.

The Expo aims to enlist these over the following days. Those interested should email renzogracie@worldjiujitsuexpo.com with the following: titles, a 1 1/5″ x 1 3/4″ picture, team name, weight, height and phone number.

The sport of Jiu-Jitsu is constantly evolving with new “crop” coming up the ranks. We often see competitors who stand out due to their extraordinary efforts and results be it from blue belt or black, rooster to ultra-heavy. The most recent known case is that of the Miyao brothers from Cicero Costha, Joao and Paulo who have shown through extreme dedication and passion that becoming champions is possible even against the largest opponents on the biggest stages.

With their recent promotion to black belt after earning three gold medals at brown belt between the two of them at the 2013 Worlds, we wanted to see from those who have faced them and those who will, what they think about their chances. From fresh brown belts to world champion, seasoned black belts, here were the responses along with the role they have or will play in the Miyaos’ Jiu-Jitsu journey.

Marcio Andre, who gained his brown belt at the 2013 Worlds after winning the purple belt featherweight division, has gone against the Miyao brothers multiple times at blue and purple belt. He even sent a video technique to GRACIEMAG offering a way to defend the berimbolo. Since the brothers were promoted before Marcio had a chance to face them at brown belt, he won’t have a chance to go against them for awhile however he isn’t worried about it. He says, “There are still trials and other events that put brown belts and black belts together.” All in all, he gives his congratulations to the brothers and says, “Anyone can see that they are really dedicated and go after their goals. So, the new belt was very well deserved and for sure they will have a lot of success in their new belt rank.”

Another brown belt who was able to match up against the Miyaos but in the open weight divisions is 2013 brown belt heavyweight world champion Jackson Souza. His opportunities to defend their berimbolo and back-taking offenses came at the 2012 Brazilian Nationals No-Gi when he defeated Paulo making him another to speak on their skills and after facing Joao at the 2013 Europeans. He says, “The Miyaos will give all the black belts a hard time. They are very dedicated and live for training, I don’t see anyone training more than them!! They will do great. Congrats to the Miyaos.”

Garry Tonon from New Jersey had his chance to face Joao Miyao in a submission-only tournament a week after the Worlds. Feeling his opportunity wasn’t the best form for him to test his skills against them, he put up a challenge involving $1,000 coming from each and a submission-only situation aimed towards Paulo. The offer is still up in the air with no definitive plans but he says of the brothers, “Congratulations to both Paulo and Joao. Their dedication to their craft is matched by few. They will be excellent black belts, and give many a difficult time in competition. Based on my match with Joao, and watching their other matches, I think their biggest challenge at black belt will be opponents with a more well rounded game and experience defending berimbolo. Can’t wait for my sub only super-fight against Paulo, should give me some more first person perspective on these warriors!”

As far as the black belts, the light-feather, feather and lightweights will now have a chance to see what the popular brothers are capable of since both Joao and Paulo choose to fight in various weight divisions.

Carlos ‘Esquisito’ Holanda is a five-time Worlds medalist at black belt light-feather under the CheckMat banner. With a light-hearted response and no ego he is ready for the Miyaos giving GRACIEMAG the statement, “Surely today they are an icon for the Jiu-Jitsu world and it will be a pleasure to fight with them. I am already preparing myself (laughs).”

Light-featherweight Laercio Fernandes, who came in second at the 2012 Worlds in the light-featherweight division and has been a force ever since, gives support to the Miyaos. He knows what being at a new rank brings, especially at black belt. He says, “First congratulations to them for the promotion. I think they will bring more emotion for the fans and fighters because they are starting a new journey for themselves and therefore they are hungry to be champion at black belt.”

Perhaps one person who can be considered a great match-up for the berimbolo-ing duo is that of multiple-time world champion in gi and no-gi, Caio Terra. A natural rooster weight, he competes in both rooster and light-featherweight divisions regularly as well as the open weight divisions. He has constantly proven his abilities to both smaller and larger guys, traveling the world for seminars and competing along the way at any chance he can get. His opinion of the Miyaos can be valued at least in terms of what they have accomplished so far and what we can expect they will try in the near future regarding winning championships in their divisions and the absolutes as smaller individuals.

He offers his comments: “They are super talented and they are very hungry to become world champions [at black belt]. They are definitely a threat to the guys in the light-feather division but the level of brown belts is very weak compared to black. I think they will frustrate a lot of top black belts but they aren’t going to dominate yet because the light-feather division has maybe the most competitive division right now as its the most unpredictable category. Maybe in a few years if they stay hungry for medals they might dominate but they need experience first. But again, it’s all very hard to predict because by then other talented kids may come. It’s not easy to become a champion, I just hope that if they do, they become good champions with the purpose of evolving the sport and changing people’s lives.”

Last weekend it was Brasilia’s turn to host an IBJJF-promoted tournament. The inaugural installment of the Brasília Open was held at Esportes do Cruzeiro Gymnasium, and Gracie Humaitá’s Fernando Toshio Tsushima was crowned grand champion of the absolute black belt division.

Fernando Toshio won the open-weight division after overcoming André Alberto of Gracie Barra in the final. He also won the heavyweight class, beating Luciano Gonçalves of Academia BSB in the decider.

Kim Terra of CheckMat won the lightweight division, while Canada’s Jake Mackenzie of GFTeam shone at middleweight. Recently-promoted Rodrigo Cavaca-black belt Renato Cardoso won at medium heavyweight.

The standout at brown belt was CheckMat’s Jackson Sousa, who won both at weight and open weight after overcoming Nova União’s Adercino de Jesus in the two finals. Check out the team results:

Nó último fim de semana, foi a vez da cidade da capital Brasília receber mais um campeonato com o selo da IBJJF. A primeira edição do Brasília Open ocorreu no ginásio de Esportes do Cruzeiro, e Fernando Toshio Tsushima (Gracie Humaitá) foi o campeão absoluto na faixa-preta.

Fernando Toshio venceu o aberto ao bater André Campos (Gracie Barra) na final, e conquistou também o peso pesado ao vencer Luciano Gonçalves (Academia BSB) na final.

Kim Terra (CheckMat) venceu o peso leve, enquanto o canadense Jake Mackenzie (GFTeam) brilhou no médio. Pupilo de Rodrigo Cavaca recém-condecorado, o faixa-preta Renato Cardoso conquistou o ouro no meio-pesado.

Na faixa-marrom, o destaque mais uma vez foi o carioca Jackson Sousa (CheckMat), que faturou o peso pesado e o absoluto, em ambas as finais ao vencer Adercino de Jesus (Nova União). Veja o resultado por equipes, abaixo:

Enquanto alguns dos maiores astros do Jiu-Jitsu se pegavam em San Diego, no Metamoris Pro, Rodolfo Vieira também vestia seu traje de guerra na capital do Brasil, e por um bom motivo: faturar um carro 0km.

No Campeonato Rockstrike de Jiu-Jitsu, em Brasília, no Distrito Federal, esse era o prêmio para o vencedor do absoluto preta. O campeão absoluto marrom, por sua vez, levou uma moto 0km. O rei dos marrons foi Jackson Souza, da equipe CheckMat, que venceu o torneio aberto após passar por três adversários.

Na faixa-preta, Rodolfo precisou passar por Tarsis Humphreys (16 a 0) e na final encarou Kim Terra, irmão de Caio.

Depois de passar a guarda e montar, o astro da GFTeam finalizou Kim no seu tradicional armlock na montada, e levou o carro zerinho.

“Graças a Deus consegui ser campeão e levar o carro. Não foi do jeito que eu queria, que era ter fechado com meus irmãos Jake Mackenzie e Ricardo Evangelista, mas não foi desta vez. O importante é que a viatura foi pra GFTeam! Essa foi pra você, tio Júlio, como tinha prometido, espero que tenha gostado de me ver lutar”, comentou o craque no Facebook.

Rodolfo foi ainda campeão do pesadíssimo, enquanto Tarsis voltou a vencer – no peso pesado.

While some of the biggest stars in the Jiu-Jitsu world grappled at Metamoris Pro in San Diego, California, Rodolfo Vieira too donned his battle wear, but in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia, where he hit the mats in hopes of winning a brand new car, the prize on offer at Rockstrike Jiu-Jitsu Championship.

While the car was the award for winning the black belt absolute, there was an equally untouched motorcycle on offer for the brown belt open weight champion. The winner of that contest was Jackson Souza, a CheckMat representative, who made it past three adversaries to get his new bike.

In the black belt division, Rodolfo outpointed Tarsis Humphreys by 16-0, and in the final he took on Kim Terra, Caio’s brother.

After passing guard and mounting, the GFTeam star tapped Kim out with his trademark armbar from mount, finally getting his coveted car.

“Thank God I managed to win and get the car. It didn’t go as I’d hoped, which would have been to close out with my bros Jake Mackenzie and Ricardo Evangelista, but this time it wasn’t to be. The important part is that the car goes to GFTeam! This one’s for you, Uncle Júlio, like I promised. I hope you enjoyed watching me compete,” the mat wizard posted on Facebook.

Rodolfo also won the ultraheavyweight division, while Tarsis returned to his winning ways at heavyweight.
