Só o canal Combate transmite ao vivo, neste sábado, a luta entre Rashad Evans e Dan Henderson, desafio principal do UFC 161, direto do Canadá. Em outro confronto aguardado, ao vivo só no canal de lutas, o gordinho Roy Nelson encara Stipe Miocic. O UFC 161 tem início a partir das 20h, com narração de Rhoodes Lima e comentários de kyra Gracie e Luciano Andrade.

Ex-campeão meio-pesado do UFC, Rashad Evans (17v-3d-1e) vai ter pela frente uma das grandes lendas do MMA, Dan Henderson (29v-9d), ex-campeão do evento japonês Pride nas categorias médio e meio-pesado.

“A tendência é de uma luta equilibrada, ambos são muito bons na luta olímpica (wrestling). Acredito que Rashad terá mais chances se derrubar e manter a luta no chão. E ele realmente tem condições de derrubar. Quanto ao Henderson, acredito que ele deve usar a luta olímpica dele para manter o combate em pé e usar a mão dele, sempre muito pesada. Acredito numa leve vantagem do Henderson, mas deve ser equilibrado”, analisa o comentarista Luciano Andrade.

Vindo numa série de três vitórias, o peso pesado Roy Nelson (19v-7d) vai ter pela frente Stipe Miocic, que vem da sua primeira derrota em dez lutas.

“Roy Nelson tem todas as condições de nocautear mais uma vez, como fez nas últimas três apresentações. Ele tem mais poder de nocaute e o confronto deve permanecer em pé, o que amplia a vantagem dele”, diz Luciano.

On Wednesday afternoon, April 10, a press conference promoted the start of ticket sales of UFC 161, which will be held on June 15, in Winnipeg, Canada.

With the presence of Renan Barão, current holder of the interim bantamweight title, and his opponent, Eddie Wineland, the UFC champ spoke about the event, the city selection and fights for this card. The Brazilian hasn’t escaped being asked about Dominick Cruz, but focused on his next opponent.

“I want the fight against Dominick Cruz to happen,” he said. “It will be a big challenge, but I’m focused on Wineland. UFC has done well choosing Eddie to challenge for this belt. He’s a tough guy, and now he is my goal.”

Showing how, as a great champion, he values Jiu-Jitsu within the Octagon, Barão said his day always starts with the gentle art.

“I wake up really early and start the training with Jiu-Jitsu,” he explained. “It’s something that I don’t give up. Then I go to boxing, Muay Thai, but the first preparation of my day is Jiu-Jitsu.”

Alexis Davis also attended the conference in Winnipeg. Her opponent, Rosi Sexton, couldn’t be present. This will be the first UFC women fight in Canada. The homegrown fighter was asked about the case of transsexual Fallon Fox, who was allowed to compete against women. Davis replied, but dodged.

“I must not talk about it,” she said. “I would face her. I train with men every day, but I can’t say when the body changes. It’s a difficult question to answer”.

At UFC 161, Barão makes his second title defense and can become the category’s definitive champion if Cruz takes much longer to return to action.

Also scheduled for the event is a great rematch between former PRIDE fighters, Rogério Nogueira and Shogun Rua.

Após noticiado aqui na GRACIEMAG.com sobre Rousimar Toquinho ter sido flagrado no exame antidoping, feito após o evento UFC on FX 6, o atleta comentou o caso, por meio de nota enviada pela assessoria de imprensa da BTT.

“Sempre fui extremamente regrado com minha alimentação e preocupado em nunca usar nada que fizesse mal ao meu corpo e ao meu desempenho dentro do octógono. E não foi diferente dessa vez. Jamais tive a intenção de trapacear. Tenho quase 30 lutas na carreira, sendo grande parte pelo UFC. Já fui submetido a diversos exames de surpresa e nunca houve nada de errado. Além disso, eu sabia que passaria por testes após a luta na Austrália porque isso é padrão do UFC. Tenho a consciência limpa, mas aceito a punição. As regras existem para todos e têm que ser cumpridas”, desabafou Rousimar, antes de explicar quais serão seus próximo passos.

Quem também fez questão de dar uma declaração sobre o caso foi o mestre Murilo Bustamente. O chefe da Brazilian Top Team acredita que seu aluno não teve a intenção de burlar as regras do UFC, mas não deixou de dar um puxão de orelha no discípulo.

“O Rousimar é um dos caras mais regrados com alimentação, preparação física e tudo o que envolve sua profissão. Mas se acusou algo errado, é porque em algum momento houve um descuido. Então, esse caso tem que servir de exemplo para todos os outros lutadores. O cuidado com tudo o que é ingerido tem que ser redobrado. Os exames estão cada vez mais rigorosos e por isso a preocupação com os alimentos e suplementos tem que ser maior também”, afirmou.

Toquinho, que foi nocauteado ainda na primeira etapa para Hector Lombard, além de ter contundido o pé durante o embate, ficará nove meses sem poder lutar. A suspensão imposta pelo Ultimate é retroativa ao dia 14 de dezembro, e Toco só poderá voltar a atuar pela organização após novo teste que comprove que o mesmo está limpo de substâncias ilegais.

Rousimar foi pego por altos índices de testosterona. Além dele, Joey Beltran também foi pego no exame, por uso de Nandralona.

After we reported here on GRACIEMAG.com that Rousimar Palhares had been flagged for elevated testosterone after his fight at UFC on FX 6, the athlete addressed the issue publicly by way of a press release.

“I’ve always been very careful about my diet and concerned about not ever using anything that could harm my body or my performance in the octagon. And this time was no different,” he said. “I never meant to cheat. I’ve had nearly 30 fights in my career, a good portion of them in the UFC. I’ve been through numerous surprise tests, and nothing’s ever gone wrong. Furthermore, I knew I was going to be subjected to testing after fighting in Australia because that’s the standard in the UFC. I have a clear conscience but accept the punishment. The rules exist for everyone to follow.”

Another to weigh in on the case was the fighter’s master, Murilo Bustamante. The head of Brazilian Top Team feels his student never meant to break the UFC’s rules but did make sure to admonish his disciple.

“Rousimar is one of the most disciplined guys when it comes to diet, physical conditioning and anything involving his profession there is,” Bustamante said. “But if he got flagged for something, it’s because he got sloppy at some point. So this case has to serve as an example to all other fighters. Everyone has to be double careful about what they put in their bodies. The testing is becoming more and more rigorous, and that’s why everyone has to be more and more careful about the food they eat and supplements they take.”

Toquinho will have to go nine months without fighting. The suspension imposed by the UFC is retroactive dating from Dec. 14, and the fighter will only be allowed to fight again once further testing comes back clean after his suspension is up.

Joey Beltran also had a positive test following UFC on FX 6. The Team Alliance fighter’s results showed traces of nandrolone, and he, like Palhares, will serve a nine-month suspension retroactive to Dec. 14.

Mais uma triste notícia para Rousimar Toquinho, peso médio do UFC. Após ser nocauteado por Hector Lombard,ainda no primeiro assalto, no UFC on FX 6,  e lesionar o pé durante a luta, Toquinho foi pego no exame antidoping e está suspenso do Ultimate. As informações são do repórter Erik Fontanez.

Toquinho testou positivo para níveis altos de testosterona e vai ficar, no mínimo, nove meses sem lutar, a contar retroativamente do dia 14 de dezembro. Após o tempo na geladeira, Rousimar terá que fazer novo teste antes de ser liberado para lutar novamente.

“O UFC segue uma política rigorosa contra o uso de quaisquer medicamento ilegal para melhorar a performance, estimulantes ou agentes que camuflem drogas”, informou a organização por meio de comunicado oficial.

Além de Toquinho, Joey Beltran também foi pego no doping, por uso de nandrolona. Beltran, que venceu sua luta no UFC on FX 6 contra Igor Pokrajac, na decisão unânime dos jurados, terá o resultado de sua luta convertido em um “no contest” de acordo com informações do UFC ao GRACIEMAG.com.

This Friday, in Queensland, Australia, half the fights on the card for UFC on FX 6 ended before regulation time was up. A bona fide knockout fest, the standouts of which were Ross Pearson’s win over George Sotiropoulos and Hector Lombard’s drubbing of Rousimar Toquinho.

This Friday, the octagon touches down in the Gold Coast Convention Center in Queensland, Austrialia, where UFC on FX 6 will unfold. GRACIEMAG.com put together a list of the five fights you won’t want to miss on the card, if you’re a Jiu-Jitsu fan.

1. Norman Parker vs. Colin Fletcher

This fight marks the final chapter of the lightweight division from the TUF Smashes reality show. US national Norman “Stormin” Parker (16w, 2l) has MMA experience and knew how to use it to his advantage in the house. Norman trains at Roberto Drysdale’s Jiu-Jitsu team, so he’s plenty well versed with takedowns and submissions. Now, his countryman Colin “Freak Show” Fletcher (8w, 1l) has greater reach, good takedown defense and should look to keep the fight standing.

2. Hector Lombard vs. Rousimar Palhares

Hector “Lightning” Lombard was highly touted when he first joined the UFC fray, but ended up disappointing on his promotional debut against Tim Boetsch at UFC 149. Now the Cuban judoka has another chance to show his potential. Now, Brazil’s Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares needs to rediscover his winning ways to remain relevant in the division. Might Toquinho manage to take Hector’s foot home with him?

3. Chad Mendes vs. Yaotzin Meza

Still craving José Aldo’s belt, Chad Mendes is coming off a win over Cody McKenzie at UFC 148 last June and was set to face up-and-coming Nova União star Hacran Dias, who had to pull out due to injury. Could Dias’s replacement, Yaotzin Meza, be easy prey, or will he give Chad more than he can chew?

4. George Sotiropoulos vs. Ross Pearson

Things haven’t been going too well for submission whiz Sotiropoulos, who now has to contend with the strike-savvy Ross Pearson in trying to right his ship. Could his Jiu-Jitsu serve him well at home?

5. Robert Whittaker vs. Brad Scott

At just 21 years of age, Robert Whitaker (9w, 2l) is heading into the middleweight final of the TUF Smashes reality show. With solid Thai boxing, he will be looking for the knockdown on Australia’s Brad Scott (8w, 1l), who is riding six back-to-back wins and ran roughshod through all his opponents on the show in making it to the final. Scott, the masterful wrestler, should be looking for the takedown and ground and pound.

Having gotten cut from the UFC after back-to-back losses in 2009, Vinny “Pezão” Magalhães filtered through a few smaller events before arriving at M-1 Global, where he settled in as the promotion’s light heavyweight champion. Making his return to the major league at UFC 152 on the 22nd of last month, the Jiu-Jitsu black belt tapped out Croatia’s Igor Porkrajac with an armbar 1:14 minutes into the second round. In an exclusive interview with GRACIEMAG.com, Vinny takes a look at the fight, explains what his next step in the UFC will be, discusses his training partner Chael Sonnen, and much more.

GRACIEMAG.com: How would you classify your UFC return?

VINNY MAGALHÃES: Everything went just as I’d expected it would. My coaches and I put together a good game plan and did a good job of studying my opponent. When I entered the octagon, at no point was I nervous. After all, I already knew what I had to do to win. The fight went in my favor the whole time. I didn’t run into any trouble at all. The only moment that was perhaps rough was when I lost that attempted armbar, because I could have ended the fight sooner.

Describe that armbar in detail.

When he took me down, I started working on a triangle as soon as we hit the canvas. However, as he was pressing me up against the fencing, I couldn’t find the room to sink the triangle. So I decided to transition to the armbar. I do that move a lot, especially when I’m pressed up against the cage.

What was your training for Igor Pokrajac like?

I did my training in group at Xtreme Couture but did the intensive part of my training with Mark Beecher, who’s my Thai boxing coach, and I also had the help of Vini Aieta, my Jiu-Jitsu teacher, closer to fight time. Vini was important in that he kept me calm when the fight went to the ground. After all, he’s coached me since I was 15. I have faith in his instructions.

Do you maintain contact with Chael Sonnen?

Yes, he gave me plenty of support throughout the entire week of the fight. He was concerned about my making weight, asked how my head was for the fight, and he totally encouraged me. We also spoke after the fight.

You watched the main event of the evening. What did you think Vitor Belfort needed to do to tap out Jon Jones?

Hard to say. It’s easy to point out mistakes from the sidelines, but only Vitor can say what was missing for him to finish. I myself, in my fight, made a technical mistake that cost me going another round. So I don’t feel I should judge or nitpick about what he might have done. Were I in his place, I’d probably have gone for the same type of spinning armbar I did in my fight, since it would break Jon Jones’s posture and I’d have more hip pressure. But like I said, it’s always a lot easier to have opinions when you’re on the outside.

What’s your goal in the UFC now?

To win more fights. That’s all I’m concerned about at the moment. My overall record isn’t the best, but at least I’ve got a good winning streak going. My UFC record’s still in the red [1w, 2l], so my primary goal is to change the numbers. I have another three fights on this contract. I hope to win them all; that way my UFC record will be 4w, 2l. After that I’ll look at loftier objectives. One fight I think would be interesting at the moment would be with Matt Hamill, since both of us are coming off wins, we’ve got similar records, plus our last fights were at the same UFC.

Após ser cortado do UFC por duas derrotas em 2009, Vinny Magalhães, o Pezão, passou por alguns eventos menores até chegar ao M-1 Global, e se tornar campeão da categoria meio-pesado. De volta ao UFC 152, no dia 22, o faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu finalizou o croata Igor Porkrajac com uma chave de braço a 1min14s do segundo round. Em entrevista exclusiva ao GRACIEMAG.com, o carioca Vinny analisou sua luta, contou sobre seu próximo passo dentro do Ultimate, falou sobre o parceiro Chael Sonnen e muito mais.

GRACIEMAG: Como você destaca sua volta ao Ultimate?

VINNY MAGALHÃES: Tudo foi exatamente como o esperado. Meus treinadores e eu traçamos uma estratégia boa para a luta, estudamos bem o meu adversário. Quando entrei no octógono, não tive nenhum momento de nervosismo, afinal já sabia o que precisava fazer para sair com a vitória. A luta correu ao meu favor o tempo todo, não tive nenhum momento ruim. O único momento ruim talvez tenha sido quando perdi a primeira tentativa de armlock, pois dava para terminar a luta mais cedo.

Como foi o seu armlock, em detalhes?

Quando ele me derrubou, já fui trabalhando o triângulo assim que atingimos a lona. Porém, como ele estava me pressionando contra a grade, eu não estava achando espaço para ajustar o triângulo. Decidi então fazer a transição para a chave de braço. Esse é um movimento que eu uso bastante, ainda mais quando pressionado contra a grade.

Como foi seu treinamento para a luta contra Igor Pokrajac?

Fiz meu treinamento em grupo na Xtreme Couture, porém a parte intensiva dos treinos fiz com o Mark Beecher, que é meu treinador de muay thai, e contei com a ajuda do Vini Aieta, que é meu professor de Jiu-Jitsu, já mais perto da luta. O Vini foi importante para me manter tranquilo quando a luta fosse pro chão, afinal ele me treina desde os 15 anos. Confio muito nas ordens dele.

Você ainda mantém relações com Chael Sonnen?

Sim, durante a semana toda da luta ele me deu muito apoio, se preocupou se eu estava controlando meu peso, perguntou como estava a minha cabeça para a luta e me deu o maior incentivo. Também nos falamos depois da luta.

Você viu a luta principal da noite. O que acha que faltou para o Vitor Belfort finalizar Jon Jones?

É difícil dizer. É fácil apontar erros estando de fora, mas só o Vitor pode dizer o que faltou para ele finalizar. Eu mesmo, na minha luta, cometi um erro técnico que me custou mais um round. Então não acho que eu deveria julgar ou apontar qualquer falha que ele talvez tenha cometido. No lugar dele, talvez eu tivesse ido para o mesmo tipo de armlock giratório que fiz na minha luta, pois ele quebraria a postura do Jon Jones e teria mais pressão no quadril. Mas como eu disse, opinar de fora sempre é mais fácil.

Qual é o seu próximo objetivo dentro no UFC?

Vencer mais lutas, só isso que me preocupa no momento. Meu cartel geral não é dos melhores, mas pelo menos estou numa sequência boa de vitórias. Meu cartel no UFC ainda é negativo (1v, 2d), por isso meu primeiro objetivo é mudar esses números. Tenho mais três lutas nesse contrato. Espero vencer todas, daí meu cartel no UFC será de 4v, 2d, a partir daí quero dar voos mais altos. Uma luta que acho que seria interessante no momento seria contra o Matt Hamill. Pois ambos estamos vindo de vitórias, nossos cartéis são similares e também pelo fato de termos lutado pela última vez no UFC.

As GRACIEMAG.com predicted, the South Korean Chang Sun Jung proved the power of his Jiu-Jitsu last night in Fairfax, Virginia, during the main event at UFC on Fuel 3.

The “Korean Zombie” didn’t just do that, he also put on a standup clinic against Dustin Poirier in the octagon. In the second round, Chang slapped on armbars, omoplatas, triangles—all duly defended by his American opponent. But the merit in Jiu-Jitsu comes from being patient and undermining the opponent with double attacks, and the Korean ultimately came up with the finish in the fourth round.

Following a flurry of solid strikes and a big flying knee, the contender for José Aldo’s belt finished up in grand style, sinking a suffocatingly snug arm-triangle.

THE BELLY’S ROLE IN THE MOVE

“He did everything just right. He sunk the triangle and thrust his belly over the opponent’s head,” noted professor of Jiu-Jitsu Elinor Batista, the leader of Garra Fight team. “The American didn’t tap in time and ended up passing out. There really was a lot of pressure behind it.”

The fight and the finish netted “Fight of the Night” and “Submission of the Night” honors for the stalwart Korean. Now “Knockout of the Night” went to Tom Lawlor, who took just 50 seconds in downing the veteran Jason MacDonald.
