Last weekend, the fans from around Texas who crowded the Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center for the IBJJF Houston Open were rewarded with a real treat. One of several top-tier Jiu-Jitsu stylists who entered the mix, Guilherme Mendes took the featherweight crown upon closing out with his brother Rafael, who took second. “It was on the last day of sign-ups that we decided to compete in Houston. We’re in San Diego at André Galvão’s academy training for upcoming tournaments, and there’s nothing better than competing for testing yourself and seeing what adjustments need to be made before the year’s big events. The Houston Open was great. I decided to compete at featherweight this time. I already started dieting to compete at light feather at the bigger events, but I’m losing weight in a proper, controlled manner. I only had one match, against Pablo Silva, and I got the tapout. Thank God I put in a good appearance; now I just have to keep up my training, fix some mistakes, and show up for the Pan even sharper,” Gui told GRACIEMAG.com.

The black belt knows that it’s the little things that make the difference, whether when attacking or defending, and offers two important lessons to help your Jiu-Jitsu evolve, as well as one on passing your opponent’s guard:

Test your Jiu-Jitsu

“As with all championships, I always try analyzing not just the technical part but how I was feeling before and during the match, and I always learn something and find something to fix. We’re constantly testing ourselves; we try competing to the max because we want to evolve and that evolution happens a lot quicker when we compete, since it’s at this moment when we’re being tested, it’s under pressure that we manage to see what positions really work and where we’re going wrong.”

Break your own records

“Surpassing last year’s results will be a huge challenge, and I’m driven by challenges. The target is always personal achievement, proving to myself that I can be better than what I’ve been; in this manner I can evolve without thinking specifically about competition. “André [Galvão] has been doing a gret job in San Diego and training has been going great! Now he’s putting together a training camp for the Pan, and we have a number of students from all over the world coming in to join us. We’re really enjoying it.”

Posture before technique

“At seminars we’re always talking a lot about ‘posture,’ how you position yourself so that even if you’re light you make yourself heavy, and even when you’re heavy you manage to be quick. Posture comes first, before pass techniques, since if you have good posture, you can frustrate your opponent, keep your base firm and attack at the right moment; when you don’t have good posture, even if you know thousands of guard pass variations, your opponent will sweep you before you get to try the first of them.

O último final de semana teve Jiu-Jitsu do bom no Texas, precisamente no Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center, onde rolou o Houston Open da IBJJF. Entre os destaques, Guilherme Mendes sagrou-se campeão do peso pena ao lado do irmão Rafael, em segundo.”Decidimos lutar em Houston no último dia das inscrições, estamos treinando em San Diego na academia do Andre Galvão para os próximos campeonatos e nada melhor do que competir para se testar e ver o que esta faltando nos ajustes antes dos grandes eventos do ano. O Houston Open foi ótimo, decidi lutar de pena desta vez, já comecei a dieta para lutar no pluma nos eventos maiores, mas ainda estou baixando o peso de forma certa e controlada. Fiz apenas uma luta contra o Pablo Silva e consegui a finalização. Graças a Deus fiz uma boa apresentação, agora é manter os treinos, corrigir os erros e chegar mais afiado no Pan”, contou Gui ao GRACIEMAG.com.

O faixa-preta sabe que são pequenos detalhes que fazem a diferença, seja na hora de atacar ou se defender, e deixa duas lições importantes para a evolução do seu Jiu-Jitsu e uma dica para passar a guarda de seu adversário:

Teste seu Jiu-Jitsu

“Como todo campeonato, sempre procuro analisar não somete a parte técnica, mas como eu estava me sentindo antes e durante a luta, e sempre aprendo e vejo algo para corrigir. Estamos sempre nos testando, procuramos competir o máximo pois queremos evoluir e a evolução acontece muito mais rápida quando competimos, pois é neste momento em que estamos sendo testados, é sob pressão que conseguimos ver as posições que realmente funcionam e onde estamos errando.”

Bata seu próprio recorde

“Superar os resultados do ano passado será um grande desafio, e sou movido a desafios. O objetivo sempre é a superação pessoal, provar para mim mesmo que posso ser melhor do que tenho sido, desta maneira posso evoluir sem ficar pensando especificamente nas competições. O André (Galvão) vem fazendo um ótimo trabalho em San Diego e os treinos estão ótimos! Agora ele está fazendo um camp de treinamento para o Pan e recebemos vários alunos de diversos lugares para se juntarem a nós. Estamos gostando muito.”

Postura antes da técnica

“Nos seminários sempre falamos muito sobre a “postura”, como você se posiciona para que mesmo sendo leve consiga ficar pesado, e mesmo sendo pesado consiga ficar rápido. A postura vem na frente das técnicas de passagem, pois se você tem uma boa postura, você consegue frustrar o adversário, manter a base firme e atacar sempre na hora certa, quando você não tem postura, mesmo que saiba mil variações de passagem de guarda, o adversário te raspa antes de você arriscar a primeira.”

The lightweight Laurah Hallow owned the absolute purple belt division at the Houston Open, an IBJJF tournament that took place this weekend. In her weight division, however, the Paragon rep came up against an athlete who, as if having technique weren’t enough, is married to and trains with André Galvão, the superstar from team Atos who you can see below against team Lloyd Irvin’s James Harbison in the medium heavyweight semifinal.

This past weekend was replete with Jiu-Jitsu of the highest quality in Texas, at the IBJJF Houston Open that took place at the Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center, with the likes of the Mendes brothers, André Galvão, Marcello Salazar, Stephen Hall, Diego Gamonal, James Harbison, Pablo Santos, Ryan Hall, and a lightweight who ended up with two gold medals and the status of big standout of the event.

That lightweight is none other than Lloyd Irvin academy’s Jonathan Torres, Houston Open champion of the lightweight and absolute divisions. To win at weight. he overcame Bruno Amorim in the division final, while to take top spot in the absolute, he had to face his training partner James Harbison in the absolute final.

EARLY-SEASON TOURNEY, IN-FORM JIU-JITSU

At featherweight, Gui Mendes placed first, with his brother, Rafael, in second. At medium heavyweight, André Galvão defeated Diego Gamonal in winning the gold. And Marcello Salazar won in the heavyweight division.

Another little guy to outdo the big guys was Gracie Elite’s Gianni Grippo, who won the brown belt absolute. As well as the featherweight division. In the team contest, Gracie Barra was rampant in the overall team competition, winning both the trophies: the kids, as well as the adult/masters categories.

A peso leve Laurah Hallock foi a dona do absoluto roxa no Houston Open, torneio da IBJJF realizado neste fim de semana. Na categoria de peso, no entanto, a lutadora da Paragon deparou-se na final com uma atleta que, não bastasse a técnica, ainda treina com o maridão André Galvão, superastro da Atos que você vê em ação abaixo, contra James Harbison (Lloyd Irvin), na semifinal dos meio-pesados.

O fim de semana foi de Jiu-Jitsu de altíssimo gabarito no Texas, no Houston Open da IBJJF. Realizado nas dependências do Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center, o campeonato teve a participação de estrelas do quilate dos irmãos Mendes, André Galvão, Marcello Salazar, Stephen Hall, Diego Gamonal, James Harbison, Pablo Santos, Ryan Hall, e um peso leve terminou com duas medalhas douradas e com o status de destaque do evento.

Trata-se de Jonathan Torres (Lloyd Irvin), campeão no peso leve e no absoluto. JT venceu Bruno Amorim na final do peso, e encarou o parceiro de treinos James Harbison na final do absoluto.

Começo de temporada, Jiu-Jitsu em forma

No peso-pena, Gui Mendes sagrou-se campeão, com o irmão Rafa em segundo. No meio-pesado, André Galvão venceu Diego Gamonal para levar o ouro. E Marcello Salazar levou o ouro no peso pesado.

Outro magrinho a se consagrar foi Gianni Grippo (Gracie Elite), campeão no absoluto na faixa-marrom, depois de vencer também o peso-pena. Entre equipes, a Gracie Barra sobrou e levou os dois troféus em disputa, os títulos do infantil e do adulto/masters.
