Quem lê a revista GRACIEMAG já sabia todos os passos de Rodrigo Minotauro para voltar ao octagon. Como comentou na edição #165, Minota teve de tratar de um problema no joelho para depois cuidar da lesão nos quadris, semelhante à que sofreu o tenista Gustavo Kuerten, no labrum acetabular, região em que a cabeça do fêmur encaixa no quadril.

Confirmando o que adiantou na reportagem, o faixa-preta operou na semana passada, nos Estados Unidos, com o mesmo médico que tratou Georges St.Pierre e muitos outros astros do esporte. Está tudo OK, como confirma seu assessor, Fernando Flores.

“Tenho problemas no ligamento cruzado anterior do joelho e no quadril. É na ponta do quadril, por degeneração. Forma um pouco de calcificação dos dois lados e, quando faço muita movimentação com as pernas, sinto arranhar.”

“No caso do Gustavo Kuerten, parece que ele demorou muito a operar e isso agravou bastante. No meu caso está menos avançado.”

“Operei primeiro o joelho, uma coisa que a recuperação demora mais. O quadril demora um pouco menos, então, operando ele depois, posso recuperar os dois problemas ao mesmo tempo.”

“Comecei a sentir o quadril quando me preparava para uma luta antiga contra o Fedor. O Murilo Bustamante, que me treinava na época, dizia: ‘Por que está repondo a guarda dessa maneira, perdeu a flexibilidade?’. Já sabia que tinha uma lesão e me tratava. Faço fisioterapia para isso há anos. Mas chegou ao extremo de ter que operar. O que incomoda são os movimentos de perna, na hora de fazer guarda. Isso é uma das coisas que mais me preocupa.”

“Quando enfrentei o Randy Couture senti muito isso, mas vinha treinando muito na piscina, com ginástica natural e alongamentos. Ainda não era um caso cirúrgico, mas depois fui a seis especialistas e todos mandaram operar. Um deles, o mais conceituado, disse: ‘Rodrigo, se você lutar assim contra o Frank Mir, vai ter apenas 50% das suas condições’. Saí da luta do Anderson Silva contra o Sonnen, fui fazer preparação física e não conseguia andar. Doeu para caramba.”

Ainda posso e vou provar isso” Minotauro

Depois de tudo isso o fã deve se perguntar por que um lutador tão consagrado, que não tem mais nada a provar, insiste em lutar. Minota responde:

“Gosto de que eu Faço. Treino muito bem contra outros caras que são top. Se estivesse tomando sempre prejuízo, mas tenho me saído bem. Isso faz pensar que ainda posso e vou provar isso.”

Anyone who reads GRACIEMAG already knows all about Rodrigo Minotauro’s ordeal in returning to the octagon. As mentioned in GRACIEMAG 165, Mino had to deal with a knee problem to thereafter take care of a hip problem similar to the one afflicting tennis player Gustavo Kuerten in the labrum acetabular, where the femur attaches to the hip.

As reported, the black belt underwent surgery last week in the United States with the same doctor who has treated Georges Saint-Pierre and a number of others from the sport. His spokesman, Fernando Flores, says all went well.

Check out a reprint of what Minotauro had to say about the injury, the first time he spoke openly about the subject.

“I have problems with the anterior cruciate ligament in my knee and my hip. My hip joints have degenerated. Both sides of my hip have calcified a bit and the cartilage grinds when I open my legs to move them.”

“In Gustavo Kuerten’s case, he delayed having surgery and that aggravated the problem. I think he’s had three operations so far. In my case, I’m going to resolve the problem at a less-advanced stage.”

“I have an anterior cruciate ligament injury and that takes longer to heal; between six and seven months. The hip takes three, so I decided to do the knee first and do the hip three months after that. This way both can recover at the same time.”

“I started feeling it when I was getting ready to fight Fedor way back. Murilo Bustamante, who coached me at the time, asked me: ‘Why are you replacing guard like that, have you lost your flexibility?’ At that time, I knew I had an injury and I sought treatment. I’ve been doing physiotherapy for years, but now it’s reached a point where there’s no way around operating. What bothers me is moving my legs, when playing guard. That’s one of the things that worries me most.”

“I felt it a lot in the Couture fight, but I’d been doing a lot of work in the pool, doing ginástica natural and stretching, and I pulled it off. It wasn’t yet a surgery case, but now I’ve been to six specialists and they all tell me to operate. One of them – the most highly-regarded one – told me: ‘Rodrigo, if you fight Frank like this you’ll only be at fifty percent capacity.’ I left Anderson Silva’s fight, went to do physiotherapy and could hardly walk. It hurt like hell.”

After all that fans must be asking themselves why an established fighter, with nothing left to prove, insists on fighting. Minotauro gives the answer:

“I like what I do. I train really well with guys who are at the top. If I were always getting bullied around… But I’ve been doing fine against guys like Cigano, Anderson, my brother… That makes me believe I can still do it, and I’m going to prove it.”

Can anyone doubt someone who survived getting run over by a truck when he was a kid?

Em São Paulo, no Brasil, Rodrigo Minotauro se recupera da cirurgia no joelho, uma das lesões que o afastaram do combate contra Frank Mir no UFC 119. A outra é uma lesão no quadril, caso parecido com o do tenista Gustavo Kuerten, embora menos grave. Para esta, Minota tem que realizar mais uma cirurgia, nos EUA, e a previsão é de voltar aos treinos em cinco meses.

Entretanto, apesar do período no estaleiro, o faixa-preta não deixa de acompanhar o que rola no mundo do MMA. Sobre o UFC, especificamente, não se surpreendeu pela maneira contundente com que Cain Velasquez nocauteou Brock Lesnar pelo cinturão de pesados.

“Ficaria surpreso se a luta fosse para o segundo round. A luta anterior do Lesnar, contra o Shane Carwin, foi muito dura. Ele se machucou e foi sofrido. Depois disso, para voltar a treinar duro demora e ele teve pouco tempo para se recuperar e estar preparado para um cara duro como o Cain”, comenta Minota ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Rodrigo explica o que, na sua opinião, foi o ponto de desequilíbrio.

“O melhor do Brock é o wrestling, e o Cain é melhor que ele nisso. O Brock não chuta e a mão do Cain é melhor também, assim como o ground and pound. Mas o que pegou é que o Cain é melhor na arma mais forte do Lesnar, o jogo não casa.”

O adversário de Cain na primeira defesa de cinturão é Junior Cigano, parceiro de treinos e pupilo de Minotauro.

“O Cigano vai estar preparado, cara, mas tem que botar um gás muito forte. É manter a distância, que ele vai nocautear esse cara. Vamos trazer esse cinturão para o Brasil”, aposta.

“Vamos fazer um camp forte. Vou ajudar no que puder e contaremos com o Maldonado, Anderson, Feijão… Estaremos todos com um objetivo: Junior Cigano! Esse cara vai ser campeão!”, completa.

Fora isso, Rodrigo comemora a inauguração da sua nova academia, em San Diego.

“O time sempre precisou de uma base nos EUA. Temos a Black House, mas só há o treino quando todos nos reunimos lá, não era uma coisa diária. Contaremos com vários treinadores, temos um espaço equivalente a quatro áreas de tatame, rodeadas com grades, e já temos mais de cem alunos em apenas um mês. É lá onde o Cigano vai fazer o camp dele. Estamos muito empolgados, porque receberemos não apenas os atletas do meu time, mas o pessoal da Black House. O José Aldo, quando quiser, vai treinar lá”, encerra.

In São Paulo, Brazil, Rodrigo Minotauro recovers from surgery on an injured knee, one of the injuries that pulled him from his scheduled fight against Frank Mir at UFC 119. The other injury was to his hip, although a less serious one. He did, however, need to operate the hip in the USA, and he is only predicted to return to training in five months.

But despite his time on ice, the black belt is still keen on the goings-on in the world of MMA. On the UFC specifically, he is not suprised about Cain Velasquez’s authoritative knockout over Brock Lesnar in winning the heavyweight belt.

“I’d have been surprised if the fight had gone into the second round. Lesnar had a really rough time in his previous fight, against Shane Carwin. He got hurt and suffered. After that, getting back to hard training takes time and he didn’t have that much time to recover and be ready to fight a guy like Cain,” remarks Minotauro to GRACIEMAG.com.

Rodrigo explains that, in his opinion, it was an unevenly balanced matchup.

“Brock’s biggest strength is his wrestling, and Cain is better at that than he is. Brock doesn’t kick and Cain has better hands, as he does ground and pound. But I think the thing that did the trick was that Cain was better at what Lesnar does best. Their games don’t match up.

Cain’s opponent for his firs title defense is Junior Cigano, Minotauro’s training partner.

“Cigano will be ready, but he has to ramp things up. If he can keep his distance, he can knock the guy out. We’re going to bring that belt to Brazil,” he bets.

“We’re going to put together a really solid camp. I’m going to help in any way I can and we’ll count on Maldonado, Anderson, Feijão… We’ll all have just one objective: Junior Cigano! The guy’s going to be champion!” he adds

Aside from his teammate’s impending title fight, Rodrigo celebrates the inauguration of his new academy, in San Diego

“The team needed a base in the USA. We have black house, but there’s only training for us there when everyone gets together there; it’s not a daily thing. We have several trainers, the floor room is equivalent to four mat areas, surrounded by fending, and we already have one hundred students after just one month. That’s where Cigano is going to hold his camp. We’re all really excited because we’ll receive not just the athletes from my team, but the folks from Black House, as well. José Aldo, when he wants, will train there,” he says in closing.

The four illustrious figures were the Brazilians elected by the Biography Channel to paint a picture of the face of the country. Each of them had a primetime TV special done on them.

After singer and former minister Gil (aired last weekend), tennis star Guga (September 13) and intellectual and former president Fernando Henrique Cardoso (in October), Helio’s life story will be told in the final episode of the series, on a November Sunday yet to be determined. The A&E channel will rerun the show on the same day at 11pm.

We wanted names that don’t just represent Brazil to Brazilians, but who are also of international relevance,” explained director of the series Rodrigo Astiz in an interview with “Revista da TV” (“TV Magazine”) in O Globo newspaper. The program is produced by Mixer.

The teacher was even featured on the cover of a comic book in Brazil.

According to the “O Estado de São Paulo” newspaper, the program Biography: Helio Gracie will show the life of the “family patriarch who became the symbol of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and revolutionized the sport around the world.”

“This tribute to Helio Gracie, now two years gone, is proof that someone only really dies when we stop talking about him,” said Kyra Gracie, the master’s great granddaughter, as quoted in the Brazilian newspaper. “Helio didn’t produce fighters, but human beings.”

As quatro ilustres figuras foram os brasileiros eleitos, pelo Biography Channel, para mostrar um pouco da cara do país. Cada um um ganhou um programa especial de uma hora no canal de TV, em faixa nobre, às 21h.

Depois do cantor e ex-ministro Gil (exibido domingo passado), do campeão de tênis Guga (13 de setembro) e do intelectual ex-presidente FHC (em outubro), Helio terá sua vida contada no último episódio da série, em novembro, num domingo a ser definido. O canal A&E reprisa o programa no próprio dia, às 23h.

“Queríamos nomes que não só representassem o Brasil para os brasileiros, mas que também tivessem relevância internacional”, explicou o diretor geral da série, Rodrigo Astiz, em entrevista à “Revista da TV”, no jornal “O Globo”. O programa é produzido pela Mixer.

O professor ganhou até revista em quadrinhos no Brasil.

Segundo o jornal “O Estado de São Paulo”, o programa “Biografia: Helio Gracie” vai mostrar a vida do “patriarca da família que virou símbolo do Jiu-Jitsu brasileiro e revolucionou o esporte em todo o mundo.”

“Essa homenagem a Helio Gracie, morto há quase dois anos, só prova que uma pessoa só morre quando a gente para de falar dela”, disse Kyra Gracie, sobrinha-bisneta do mestre, citada pelo jornal paulista. “Helio não criava lutadores, e sim seres humanos.”

O Biography Channel é transmitido hoje por diversas operadoras, menos a Net, maior do país, e a Sky. O canal anunciou que está negociando espaço com as duas operadoras. O Biography faz parte do grupo da HBO que administra outros três canais na América Latina: The History Channel, E! e A&E.
