Duas batalhas já foram vencidas, resta apenas mais um compromisso para Felipe Pena, o Preguiça, fechar o mês de abril com 100% de aproveitamento. Depois de manter o cinturão do ACB Jiu-Jitsu na semana passada, em evento realizado no Cazaquistão, Preguiça embarcou para Guam para defender seu título do Marianas Open, realizado no último final de semana. E, mais uma vez ele saiu vitorioso. Com mais uma grande perfomance, o faixa-preta, que já havia sido campeão do torneio em 2016 e 2017, despachou três oponentes para conquistar o tricampeonato e manter o cinturão.

“Na primeira luta eu enfrentei um atleta local e consegui finalizar no braço. Na segunda luta venci o Tanner Rice por 5 a 0 depois de raspar e passar. E, na final, eu derrotei o Jackson Sousa por 19 a 2. Fiquei muito feliz com a minha perfomance. Estou me sentindo muito bem, muito preparado e confiante. Sinto que o meu Jiu-Jitsu está fluindo bastante. Acredito que estou na melhor fase da minha carreira. Estou muito feliz com que está acontecendo e ansioso pelo que estar por vir. Quero ser campeão de tudo”, disse Preguiça, que já embarcou para Abu Dhabi, onde nesse final de semana encerra a sua maratona de competições defendendo seu título do World Pro.

“As viagens foram uma verdadeira maratona. Foram viagens longas, um espaço curto de tempo entre um torneio e outro, com muitas mudanças em relação ao fuso horário… Mas estou procurando me alimentar bem e dormir bem. Consegui treinar bem em todos esses lugares que eu competi para adaptar o meu corpo antes dos torneios. Fiquei bem atento também para não baixar a imunidade e ficar doente. Não fiz uma preparação específica para isso. A minha preparação foi toda para chegar e lutar bem os campeonatos, porque eu sabia que abril teria uma agenda cheia”, concluiu Preguiça.

Depois dessa exaustiva maratona, Preguiça terá um mês para focar exclusivamente no Mundial da IBJJF, que acontece no início de junho na Califórnia.

Felipe Pena at the 2016 European

The 17th edition of the Marianas Open Jiu-Jitsu championship took place this Saturday, April 16, in Guam.

Gracie Barra’s Felipe Pena was the standout with a 4-2 win over last year’s champion Keenan Cornelius for the black belt open class title.

Pena took home $10,000 in prizes while Cornelius got $3k and Igor Schneider got $2k for the third place.

Pena fought three times to get to the final.

First he beat Guilherme Augusto 2-0 with a sweep, then he finished Terrence Aflague in the semifinal.

Keenan also did great, first finishing Jacob Guerrero with a baratoplata and then Igor Schneider with an omoplata.

Schneider made to third place by finishing Aflague with an armbar.

The 2016 Marianas Open is just around the corner.

The event scheduled April 16 will gather some big names this Saturday in the beautiful island of Guam.

The organizers just released the brackets for the adult male black belt division, which is worth $15k in money prizes.

Here are the paths to the bounty for each athlete registered.

As you can see, last year’s champion, Keenan Cornelius is one side while Felipe Pena and Luiz Panza are on the other side.

Pena and Panza could meet in the semifinal while Keenan could face the always tough Rhalan Gracie on the other semifinal.

The 2016 edition of the Marianas Open is lining up to be one historic moment for Jiu-Jitsu in Guam, on April 16.

An all-star team of black belts will land in the Pacific island to compete in the open class and battle for $15k in prizes.

The champion will pocket $10k, while the runner up will get $3k and the third place will get $2k.

The 2015 champion Keenan Cornelius is back to defend his title, but he’ll have his work cut out for him.

Felipe pena, Luiz Panza, Rhalan Gracie, Bryant Pangelinan, Cristiano Kaminishi, Guilherme Augusto and Igor Schneider are also in the mix.

The Marianas Open is also an event for competitors of all ages and belt rankings.

O fenômeno Keenan Cornelius foi a estrela do torneio, ao vencer o absoluto com autoridade, após passar por Marcos Souza e Lucas Leite.

Here’s how the final battle for the prize went down between Keenan Cornelius and Mike Fowler.

A missão não era fácil, mas Keenan Cornelius a aceitou. Voou da Califórnia até Guam, ilha americana localizada no Pacífico, e mostrou por que é hoje um dos principais nomes do Jiu-Jitsu esportivo.

Com um estrangulamento arco e flecha, Keenan finalizou o compatriota Michael Fowler na final do absoluto do Marianas Open de Jiu-Jitsu. O novo campeonato foi realizado no sábado, 28 de março, na bela ilha de Guam.

Com a vitória, o faixa-preta da Atos garantiu os 10 mil dólares de premiação. Antes de brigar pelo ouro, o campeão precisou raspar Lucas Leite (Checkmat) duas vezes na semifinal, e vencer Marcos Souza (Bonsai) por 12 a 2 na primeira luta.

Steve Shimizu, organizador do torneio, ficou satisfeito com as lutas e prometeu uma bolsa ainda maior para o próximo ano.

That was the finishing touch of a Saturday of great Jiu-Jitsu in the beautiful island of Guam.

The 2015 Marianas Open gathered over 200 athletes for a full day of competition, including kids, teenagers and adults.

Throughout the day, great technique and a lot of passion for the gentle art was poured on the four mats set up in the Phoenix Center.

In the teams competitions, once again, Purebred Guam dominated the podium, winning both the Kids/Teens and the Adults divisions.

According to Stephen Roberto, leader of Purebred, the team has won every single edition of the Marianas Open, in the longest winning streak in southeast Asia.

The moment everyone waited for was the black belt open class division, which would grant the champion a $10k prize.

That was enough to attract some major names for the competition, like Keenan Cornelius, Lucas Leite, Michael Fowler, Marcos Souza, J0sh Hinger and others.

The event’s organizer, Steve Shimizu, was very pleased with the turn out and promised an even bigger purse for next year’s event.

GMA member Stephen Roberto is the owner and head instructor at Purebred Jiu-Jitsu Guam. Having opened the academy in 1996, Stephen’s leadership has led his students to many medals and titles as well as enriched lives because of Jiu-Jitsu.

After taking home 22 medals at the 2014 IBJJF Asian Open, Stephen received an honorary certificate from the Government of Guam for his accomplishment and what he has done for Guam in the past 18 years.

If that wasn’t enough, the team was honored with the title of “Best Gym in Guam” as chosen by Pika Magazine.

Black belt no-gi world champion JT Torres is in Guam at GMA Purebred BJJ to teach for the week. He will host a kids seminar on Saturday, Dec. 14 as well.

The ADCC medalist from Atos leads a training schedule, which features two classes a day with Monday and Thursday including a no-gi class. All others are gi classes and there will be an open mat with JT on Friday, Dec. 13 as well.
