Há três décadas, o circuito do Jiu-Jitsu esportivo ainda engatinhava. Mas já encantava e inspirava os praticantes, com célebres conferes que ficaram na memória dos pioneiros.

Na Copa Atlântico Sul, Renzo Gracie, então professor da Gracie Barra, enfrentou Alexandre “Gigi” Paiva, em mais um clássico GB x Alliance, realizado no Rio de Janeiro em 1994.

Hoje, Renzo e Gigi são ambos mestres, e ostentam a faixa-coral na cintura.

Nome de alta patente na equipe Alliance, junto de outras lendas como Romero Jacaré e Fábio Gurgel, Alexandre “Gigi” Paiva tem no seu baralho do Jiu-Jitsu uma infinidade de posições para surpreender seus adversários e fazer o jogo de seus alunos ainda mais perigoso.

Escalado certa vez para figurar na capa de GRACIEMAG, ao lado de seu aluno e faixa-preta Cauã Reymond, Gigi aproveitou o intervalo das fotos para mostrar uma raspagem partindo da guarda De la Riva.

Na posição, gravada na escola GMI Alliance Leblon, com o auxilio do faixa-preta Rodrigo Akillis, Gigi mostra como criar um espaço para travar a mão do oponente, antes de trazer o mesmo de volta para a curta distância e assim inverter com segurança.

Antes de abraçar o MMA e ser duplo campeão do Legacy FC, o craque Léo Leite marcou época nos tatames. 

Recém-graduado faixa-preta, Léo Leite protagonizou um desfecho triunfal na final do peso pesadíssimo no Mundial 1999, disputado no tradicional Tijuca Tênis Clube, no Rio de Janeiro. Atleta formado por Alexandre Paiva na Alliance, Léo mediu forças com o lendário Zé Mário Sperry, que fora campeão absoluto no ano anterior e conquistara o ouro nas edições de 1997 e 1996 nos pesos superpesado e pesadíssimo, respectivamente.

Aos 21 anos, Léo Leite desbancou Zé Mário Sperry e entrou para a galeria de campeões mundiais. Léo pôs em prática seu estilo passador e derrotou o gabaritado adversário nos pontos. Quando o cronômetro zerou, Léo correu para o colo do pai Naldinho, também faixa-preta, e abraçou os companheiros de equipe. 

O Mundial 1999 curiosamente marcou a consagração de mestre e aluno. Gigi Paiva foi campeão no peso médio, enquanto Léo garantiu o ouro no pesadíssimo.

50 anos de vida, 35 dedicados ao Jiu-Jitsu. Com esses números, o professor Alexandre “Gigi” Paiva comemorou seu aniversário no último sábado, dia 4 de março. Alunos, amigos e familiares se reuniram no dojô da nossa GMI Alliance Rio, no Alto Leblon, para celebrar junto ao querido faixa-preta.

O líder da equipe, fundador da Alliance ao lado do mestre Romero Jacaré e do professor Fábio Gurgel, Gigi relembrou sua trajetória de conquistas, todas guiadas pela nossa querida arte suave.

“Há quase 35 anos o Jiu-Jitsu vem norteando a minha vida. Através dele vieram coisas maravilhosas, como meu casamento com a Dani Genovesi e os meus três filhos: Victor, Julia e Antônio. Somaram-se aos filhos, os alunos, mas de 400. E há 25 anos, o ponto da virada. Com Romero “Jacaré” Cavalcanti e Fábio Gurgel, fundamos a Associação Alliance de Jiu-Jitsu e, diretamente do Rio de Janeiro, levamos nossa filosofia de luta para as Américas do Sul, Central e do Norte, Europa, Ásia e Austrália. Hoje são 150 filiais pelo mundo e isso tudo graças a confiança que as pessoas tem em nosso trabalho. Então nada melhor que celebrar nesse que é o grande palco da minha vida”, disse emocionado o professor.

Na celebração, Gigi conferiu, junto aos seus convidados, um vídeo no qual grandes nomes do Jiu-Jitsu parabenizaram a fera. Romero Jacaré e Fábio Gurgel falaram com emoção sobre o amigo, e outros nomes da academia como Fernando Tererê e Tayane Porfírio somaram suas palavras a outros nomes famosos, como Roger Gracie e Maurição Gomes.

Na festa, outras estrelas se misturavam aos não menos ilustres alunos e familiares. Cauã Reymond, ator de televisão e faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu, apareceu para dar um abraço no professor, assim como o judoca medalhista olímpico e comentarista do SporTV Flávio Canto, que também leva na cintura a faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu forjada na Alliance.

Days after snapping up another gold medal for his collection in the senior 2 division of the International Master competition, Alexandre “Gigi” Paiva plowed head on into new conquests.

In Europe, where he is on a seminar tour with his prodigy Fernando Tererê, Gigi sent good news from Poland, a land renowned for his tough inhabitants.

“I just gave a black belt to the best grappler in Poland, my student Radek Turek. He’s actually the best grappler in Europe,” he tells GRACIEMAG.com with exclusivity.

For those for whom the Polish name doesn’t ring a bell, Paiva reminds us: “He’s been winning the European ADCC trials for the last few years, winning both at weight and absolute. And he’s won all the no-gi championships in Europe in recent years. He fought in the latest ADCC’s and isn’t even a black belt yet.

Turek isn’t Gigi’s first black belt in the country, having already promoted his student Sebastian Slowek. The teacher made the most of the dialogue to issue an alert.

“Those two have been my students for more than nine years, they deserved the promotion. I see there’s a group that comes here to Europe to do seminars and ends up giving belts to all the participants. I don’t promote anyone in seminars where I don’t know the students. Keep alert, advertising seminars by giving new belts is like spitting in the plate we eat from.

Along with his teammates at Alliance and Master Alexandre paiva, Tererê goes for some sweeps, asks some questions and show signs there’s still time for him to return to putting on brilliant shows on the mats.

“Today you’re not going to work out. Take some rest,” Gigi orders.

Tererê practices positions to exhaustion, and always has questions for his master. His plan is to return to competition, but only at the right time.

“The kids these days are really good, so I can’t go in there if I’m not going to hang. Master is holding me back, and he’ll tell me when I’m good to go. What I want is to compete at the 2011 Worlds,” he says.

At 30 years of age, the worst phase in the black belt’s life, his drug addiction, is beginning to be left in the past. Invitations to teach seminars and new opportunities have already arisen. On his journey, Tererê has a great ally:

“Jiu-Jitsu. I’ve done a lot for it and now it’s going to do a lot for me. I thank everyone in Jiu-Jitsu who helped me and Master Alexandre and Fabio Gurgel. They gave me opportunity when I was just a yellow belt and now they’re giving me opportunity again,” he says in closing.

But the center of attention was that old Alexandre “Gigi” Paiva student wearing a Koral gi and broad grin on his face.

“Hey, how’s it going?” he asked Elan Santiago, also a black belt on the team, and a teacher in Nilópolis, where he heads a school for the kids from the Beija-Flor samba school.

Speechless, Elan was overcome with emotion and embraced his friend, and they chatted a bit, but Gigi quickly began teaching his class.

With the round-robin of training partners, Elan thought out loud: “Hmm, if I’m going to get to submit Tererê once in my life, it’ll be today!”

Not a chance, with the firm hip that wowed Jiu-Jitsu fans and his malleability, Tererê showed that champions never forget. Elan tried a spot-on foot attack. Fernando propped himself against the wall, spun and escaped in surprising fashion: “You think I’m a fool?” he said smiling.

So Elan tried to surprise with the turtle guard. “Ten seconds later I was cursing Telles, who taught meit. “Tererê caught me quick.”

They restarted with Tererê in the middle. The star from the Cantagalo favela faked getting caught in a sweep, came back with an omoplata and sunk and armbar. “Now I’ll get him,” thought Elan. “The guy’s been training since 4 pm and now it’s 9!” And he took flight from a sweep and tapped to a choke from back mount. Happy as could be.

“What a happy drubbing I took. When I watch him, it’s like watching Messi play ball. The way he moves is enchanting,” Elan would say, after having an açaí with the Jiu-Jitsu wizard.

It was the same jovial Tererê of always.

“It’s time to forget the past and look to the future. I want to training and get my body back into top shape. And who knows, maybe I’ll win a Worlds before ending my career,” he told GRACIEMAG.com.

We asked whether his father, Tio Barriga, could now make another t-shirt, since the “Volta, Tererê” (“Come back, Tererê”) one that became famous during the fighter’s tough times.

“Sure can, Tererê is back. Now I just have to be patient, take care of myself. My goal is to train here with Master Gigi and the folks who wish me well. I’m training three times a day and feel great. And I’ll be there at the Brazilian Nationals in Tijuca, to watch the guys compete.”
