Nascido em 14 de agosto de 1992, no Piauí, Gialysson Adão Silva Freitas, hoje com 33 anos, trilhou um caminho pouco convencional até se firmar como um dos nomes consistentes do jiu-jitsu internacional. Criado em Vila Isabel, no tradicional Morro dos Macacos, no Rio de Janeiro, foi ali que teve o primeiro contato com o esporte ainda na adolescência, início de uma trajetória marcada por evolução contínua e adaptação ao mais alto nível competitivo.

Faixa-preta formado pela GF Team, equipe ligada à tradicional linhagem de Oswaldo Fadda, passando por Júlio César Pereira e José Luís Varella Barca , Gialysson construiu sua carreira enfrentando alguns dos atletas mais duros da nova geração do grappling. Ao longo dos anos, acumulou vitórias importantes sobre nomes como Oliver Taza, John Combs, André Porfirio, Damion Oranday, Clay Mayfield, Raul Basílio, Kauan Barbosa e Natan dos Santos, consolidando seu nome no circuito internacional.

“Já lutei com muitos atletas de alto nível que contribuíram muito para minha carreira. A vitória sobre o Oliver Taza, quando ele estava entre os melhores do ranking, me deu uma motivação extra para continuar trabalhando duro”, diz o atleta.

Mais do que os resultados, sua trajetória também foi moldada por adversidades. Em 2025, uma lesão no ligamento colateral medial (MCL) o afastou dos tatames por cerca de dez meses, interrompendo sua sequência competitiva. O período, no entanto, acabou sendo determinante para uma transformação não apenas física, mas também mental.

“A lesão foi um dos momentos mais difíceis da minha carreira. Eu não sabia quando conseguiria voltar, mas foi um período que me fez evoluir muito como pessoa e atleta”, comentou Freitas.

Durante esse intervalo, Gialysson também viveu uma mudança profunda fora dos tatames com o nascimento de sua filha, experiência que trouxe uma nova perspectiva de vida e reforçou sua disciplina no retorno ao esporte. Com a volta aos treinos, surgiu um atleta mais estratégico. Ao lado da esposa, também faixa-preta, passou a estudar adversários, analisar padrões e refinar detalhes que antes não recebiam tanta atenção, um diferencial importante em um cenário cada vez mais competitivo.

Nos resultados mais recentes, Gialysson chega embalado por performances sólidas no circuito. O atleta vem de uma vitória no Fight 2 Win, além de ouro na divisão meio-pesado no Indianapolis Open e ouro no absoluto do Dallas Open, onde também conquistou o segundo lugar em sua categoria, reforçando sua consistência em alto nível competitivo.

É nesse contexto que surge o Campeonato Pan-Americano da IBJJF 2026, que será realizado em Kissimmee, na Flórida. Considerado um dos torneios mais importantes do calendário mundial, o evento reúne a elite do jiu-jitsu e funciona como um verdadeiro termômetro para o restante da temporada. Para Gialysson, o Pan é a continuidade de uma busca iniciada há anos. Após conquistar o terceiro lugar em 2024 e o vice-campeonato em 2025, ele chega à edição de 2026 no auge da maturidade competitiva, com uma preparação mais completa e consciente.

“Esse Pan representa resiliência. Venho buscando esse título há muito tempo na minha carreira. Hoje me sinto mais forte, mais maduro, mais experiente e mais técnico. Esse é um dos eventos mais importantes do calendário e pode impulsionar ainda mais minha carreira”, comenta o faixa-preta, escalado na divisão meio-pesado master 1.

Dentro do tatame, sua identidade segue baseada na versatilidade. Capaz de lutar em pé, na guarda ou por cima, ele mantém um estilo agressivo, mas agora aliado a uma leitura mais apurada dos momentos da luta.

“Independente de onde a luta acontecer, eu vou estar pronto. Minha principal arma vai ser a vontade de vencer e a busca constante pela finalização. Com trabalho duro, dedicação e resiliência, você é capaz de conquistar qualquer coisa. Só nós sabemos o que acontece nos bastidores antes de aparecer o que todos veem”, alerta Freitas.

“I’ve faced many high-level athletes who played an important role in my development. My win over Oliver Taza, when he was ranked among the top athletes, gave me extra motivation to keep pushing forward,” the athlete said.

In 2025, a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury sidelined him for nearly ten months, interrupting his competitive momentum during a crucial phase of his career. However, the setback ultimately became a turning point for both physical and mental growth.

“That injury was one of the toughest moments of my career. I didn’t know when I would be able to come back, but it was also a period that helped me grow as both a person and an athlete,” Freitas commented.

During that time, Gialysson also experienced a life-changing moment outside the mats with the birth of his daughter, bringing a new perspective and strengthening his discipline during recovery. Upon returning to training, he evolved into a more strategic athlete. Alongside his wife, also a black belt, he began studying opponents, analyzing patterns, and refining details that previously received less attention — a key adjustment in today’s highly competitive landscape.

Recently, Gialysson has maintained strong momentum on the circuit. He is coming off a victory at Fight to Win, along with a gold medal in the heavyweight division at the Indianapolis Open and a double podium performance at the Dallas Open, where he claimed gold in the absolute division and silver in his weight class, results that reinforce his consistency at a high level.

That momentum now leads into the 2026 IBJJF Pan Championship, set to take place in Kissimmee, Florida. Widely regarded as one of the most important tournaments in the sport, the event gathers elite athletes from around the world and serves as a key benchmark for the season.

For Gialysson, the Pan is more than just another competition, it represents the continuation of a long pursuit. After finishing third in 2024 and earning silver in 2025, he enters the 2026 edition at the peak of his competitive maturity, with a more complete and calculated preparation.

“This Pan represents resilience. I’ve been chasing this title for a long time. I feel stronger, more mature, more experienced, and more technical. It’s one of the most important events of the year and can take my career to another level,” said the black belt, who is competing in the Master 1 heavyweight division.

On the mats, his identity remains rooted in versatility. Whether standing, playing guard, or attacking from the top, Gialysson maintains an aggressive style, now combined with sharper timing and decision-making.

“No matter where the fight takes place, I’ll be ready. My main weapon will be my will to win and my constant pursuit of the submission. With hard work, dedication, and resilience, you can achieve anything. Only we know what happens behind the scenes before people see the results,” Freitas stated.
