Here in the Middle East, I’ve witnessed many tales of perseverance in this regard. They’re pretty much the same ones people go through in Brazil or other parts of the world. What really draws attention, though, are the efforts of Arab women. Yes, since the cultural complexity of this region makes such determined women into more than just trailblazers, but heroines.

We have in Lebanon today a pregnant teacher, Jordan’s Ghalia Smith. Recently Ghalia even struck a deal with the Brazilian embassy to teach Jiu-Jitsu at the Brazilian Cultural Center in Beirut.

In Abu Dhabi, the first activity of the day at the women’s military school is Jiu-Jitsu class. Footnote: the military students there start their day at 4 am.

And last weekend, Professor Cassuza Fornari, who lives in Abu Dhabi, received an invitation from eight Jordanian white belts to conduct a seminar for women in the capital city, Amman. They organized and financed the seminar directly, without any interference from their teacher, black belt Samy Al Jamal. The teacher, obviously, granted use of the mat and supported the idea.

Such endeavors taking place leads one to believe that soon we will be seeing more and more female black belts around these parts. From the look of it, these are women who don’t know what it is to quit.

Tenho testemunhado histórias, aqui no Oriente Médio, de superação nesse sentido. São quase as mesmas vividas no Brasil ou qualquer outro lado do mundo. Chama atenção, porém, o empenho das mulheres árabes. Sim, pois a complexidade cultural desta região faz que muitas dessas determinadas mulheres sejam, além de desbravadoras, heroínas.

Temos, hoje, no Líbano, uma professora grávida, a jordaniana Ghalia Smith. Ghalia, inclusive, firmou recentemente convênio com a Embaixada do Brasil para ministrar Jiu-Jitsu no Cento Cultural Brasileiro em Beirute.

Em Abu Dhabi, a primeira atividade diária dentro de uma escola militar feminina é uma aula de Jiu-Jitsu. Detalhe: o dia dessas alunas militares começa às 4 da manhã.

E, no último fim de semana, a professora Cassuza Fornari, que mora em Abu Dhabi, foi convidada por oito faixas-brancas jordanianas para ministrar um seminário direcionado para mulheres da capital Amam. Elas organizaram e custearam o seminário diretamente, sem qualquer interferência do professor, o faixa-preta Samy Al Jamal. O professor, obviamente, cedeu o tatame e apoiou a ideia.

Fatos assim nos fazem acreditar que, em breve, veremos cada vez mais faixas-pretas mulheres por aqui. Ao que tudo indica, são mulheres que desconhecem a desistência.

In Europe there’s also a good offer of teachers. But to the east of the planet, things are quite different. Except for Abu Dhabi, where there’s a huge concentration of teachers hired by the government, there’s still a lack of black belt instructors from Eastern Europe all the way to Japan.

But the tendency to keep surpassing limitations means the art keeps getting stronger. In Lebanon, for example, Ghalia Smith, the first Arab female to earn a purple belt, rents a room each week to teach Jiu-Jitsu in the capital, Beirut. Around twenty people gather every Saturday for three hours so that the Jordanian may teach the gentle art techniques she learned while living in the Arab Emirates.

Although Beirut is quite a modern city for the region, it’s still a surprise to see a woman commanding a Jiu-Jitsu class comprised largely of men. But that’s not even the biggest surprise. Ghalia doesn’t teach the classes on her own. She has been carrying with her an unborn child for the last six months. That’s right, Ghalia is teaching class pregnant.

Although she does have the help of blue belt Daniel Hilal, the instructor is surprisingly persistent in teaching what she knows to her Lebanese students. If on the one hand Brazilians, Americans and Europeans should value the precious black belts they have at their disposal, those elsewhere around the world should value the momentum from these incredible people who overcame great obstacles in order to teach.

Na Europa, também existe uma boa oferta de professores. Mais ao leste do planeta, no entanto, a realidade é bem outra. Com exceção de Abu Dhabi, onde existe uma grande concentração de professores contratados pelo governo, na faixa que vai da Europa Oriental ao Japão o mundo ainda carece de profesores faixas-pretas.

Mas a superação faz a arte seguir fortalecendo-se. No Líbano, por exemplo, Ghalia Smith, a primeira mulher árabe a conquistar a faixa-roxa, aluga uma sala todas as semanas para ensinar Jiu-Jitsu na capital, Beirute. Cerca de 20 pessoas se reúnem todos os sábados durante três horas para que a casca-grossa jordaniana possa demonstrar as técnicas da arte suave que aprendeu enquanto morava nos Emirados Árabes.

Apesar de Beirute ser uma cidade bastante moderna para a região, é inevitável a supresa de ver uma mulher comandar um treino de Jiu-Jitsu para uma maioria de homens. Mas a maior surpresa não está aí. Ghalia não ministra as aulas sozinha. Carrega com ela uma gestação de 6 meses. Isto mesmo, Ghalia comanda as aulas grávida.

Apesar do auxílio do faixa-azul Daniel Hilal, surpreende a persistência dessa instrutora em passar o que sabe aos alunos libaneses. Se, por um lado, brasileiros, americanos e europeus devem valorizar os preciosos faixas-pretas que têm à sua disposição, outros tantos mundo afora devem valorizar o ímpeto dessas incríveis pessoas que superam obstáculos para ensinar.

On October 21, the Brazilian embassy in Lebanon promoted Brazilian night in the historic and touristic city of Byblos. The event featured capoeira, samba, and of course, Jiu-Jitsu demonstration.

The art was presented by purple belts Ali Al Abadi and Ghalia Smith.

Contact between the embassy and Jiu-Jitsu was made by Tareq Smith, Ghalia’s husband and an Aikido black belt. Tareq feels it is important that Jiu-Jitsu be represented, as it is an expression of the lifestyle of the Brazilian people.

“Brazil and Lebanon have a very close relationship, since the largest Lebanese colony is in Brazil. The Lebanese adore Brazil, so I feel it is extremely important that the embassy allow us to get to know the gentle art,” says Tareq.

A embaixada brasileira no Líbano promoveu no último dia 31 de outubro uma noite brasileira na histórica e turística cidade de Byblos. O evento teve demonstrações de capoeira, samba e, claro, de Jiu-Jitsu.

A arte se fez presente através de apresentações comandadas pelos faixas-roxas Ali Al Abadi e Ghalia Smith.

A aproximação do Jiu-Jitsu com a embaixada se deu através de Tareq Smith, esposo de Ghalia e faixa-preta de Aikido. Tareq acha importante a chancela da representação brasileira, uma vez que o Jiu-Jitsu é uma forma de expressão do estilo de vida do povo brasileiro.

“Brasil e Líbano são países muito próximos, já que a maior colônia libanesa está no Brasil. Os libaneses têm adoração pelo Brasil, acho importantíssimo que a embaixada possibilite ao nosso povo o conhecimento da arte suave”, resume Tareq.
