This Friday, in Queensland, Australia, half the fights on the card for UFC on FX 6 ended before regulation time was up. A bona fide knockout fest, the standouts of which were Ross Pearson’s win over George Sotiropoulos and Hector Lombard’s drubbing of Rousimar Toquinho.

O UFC on FX 6 rolou nessa sexta-feira, em Queensland, na Austrália, e metade dos duelos terminaram antes do tempo previsto. Um verdadeiro show de nocautes, com destaque para a vitória de Ross Pearson sobre George Sotiropoulos e para o cubano Hector Lombard, que acertou bons golpes em Rousimar Toquinho e despachou o brasileiro ainda no primeiro assalto.

Ross Pearson beat George Sotiropoulos in the main event of UFC on FX 6, grabbing the technical knockout over the TUF Smashes coach in the third round on Saturday in Golden Coast, Australia. In addition, Robert Whittaker topped Bradley Scott and became the welterweight winner of TUF Smashes, and Norman Parke bested Colin Fletcher to win the reality show’s lightweight bracket.

Early in the main event, Pearson hit his opponent with a good blow and Sotiropoulos felt it immediately. The Australian recovered and made good at the end of the round, acquiring the Englishman’s back and trying to finish with a rear naked choke. Pearson, however, defended well and finished the round with the advantage.

Upon returning in the second frame, Pearson continued on the offensive, knocking his opponent down again with punches. Sotiropoulos tried to strike back, but Pearson absorbed all blows from his opponent without major problems.

In the third round, Sotiropoulos was surprised by another strong punch by Pearson, which sent him falling the ground for the final time, ending the clash. The finish came at 0:41 of the time period.

Welterweight TUF Smashes Final

Whittaker, the only Australian to compete for the six-figure UFC contract, was all over Scott in the first round and gave no room for him to work his game. A combination of punches and kicks kept Scott from mounting a formidable offense, giving Whittaker the advantage in the first time period.

In the second round, Scott was able to bring Whittaker to the ground and began to bring the fight more to his advantage. Stifling his opponent’s strikes by grappling on the canvas, Scott won the round.

The third round was a dramatic clash with strikes coming from both competitors, but Whittaker managed to connect more often and come out the winner by unanimous decision. The judges scored the bout 29-28 across the panel.

Lightweight TUF Smashes Final

Fletcher tried to impose his will with a standing fight at the beginning of the round, but Parke brought his opponent to the ground, stabilizing and controlling his opponent in the opening frame.

The second round started similarly, with Parke controlling Fletcher on the floor and working the fight the way he wanted. Despite Fletcher making a small comeback and scoring points at the end of the round, Parke showed to control the fight for a majority of the time allotted.

Fletcher came forward in the third round, trying to land effective strikes, but couldn’t land the knockout punch. Parke won the unanimous decision with scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28, and took home the six-figure contract for the lightweights.

Lombard Demolishes Palhares

In the first fight of the main card, Hector Lombard topped Rousimar Palhares, knocking out “Toquinho” in the first round of their contest.

The fight began with Lombard moving forward and controlling the center of the octagon. Toquinho respected his opponent, kept his distance and landed effective leg kicks. However, Lombard’s striking proved to be too intense for the Brazilian, and he knocked out his opponent at 3:38 of the opening round.

A sexta edição do UFC on FX foi um show para os fãs que acompanharam o evento, que definia os vencedores do TUF Smashes. Pelo duelo dos técnicos, Ross Pearson superou George Sotiropoulos na luta principal da noite. Além disso, dois atletas foram contemplados com um contrato do Ultimate: Robert Whittaker, que venceu Bradley Scott e chega à divisão dos meio-médios; e Norman Parke, que se saiu melhor contra Colin Fletcher e agora integra a categoria dos pesos leves. A luta da noite foi protagonizada por Cody Donovan e Nick Penner, enquanto Ben Alloway foir premiado com o nocaute da noite, aplicado sobre Manuel Rodriguez. O evento foi realizado nesta sexta-feira, dia 14, em Queensland, Austrália

Na luta principal da noite, Ross Pearson teve como adversário George Sotiropoulos. Logo no início do primeiro assalto, Pearson encaixou bom golpe e George sentiu imediatamente. O australiano se recuperou e fez boa investida no fim do assalto, ganhando as costas do inglês e tentando finalizar com um mata-leão, mas Ross defendeu bem, terminando o round com a vantagem. Ao voltar para a segunda etapa, Ross foi pra cima anotando um knockdown sobre George, que mais uma vez se recuperou. Sotiropoulos ainda tentou golpear em pé, mas Ross Pearson absorveu todos os golpes de seu adversário sem maiores problemas. No terceiro assalto, Georges não procurou a luta no chão, e foi surpreendido por ótimo golpe de Pearson, que acertou o queixo de seu adversário dando fim ao embate. Pela final dos meio-médios do TUF Smashes, tivemos a luta entre Robert Whittaker e Bradley Scott. Robert, único australiano a disputar vaga no UFC, partiu pra cima no primeiro assalto e não deu espaço para Scott trabalhar seu jogo. Já no segundo round, Bradley reagiu e mostrou o que tinha para o combate, levando Robert para o chão e buscando a finalização, sendo superior neste round. A terceira etapa do embate foi dramática, com trocação franca e golpes disparados a todo instante pelos competidores, mas Robert conseguiu conectar mais e sair vencedor, levando a torcida australiana ao delírio. Robert saiu do octagon como mais novo contratado dos meio-médios do Ultimate, categoria de Georges St-Pierre, Carlos Condit e Rory MacDonald.

Antes, outra final do TUF Smashes definia o mais novo contratado da organização para a divisão dos leves. Colin Fletcher enfrentou Norman Parke pelo sonhado contrato. Colin tentou trabalhar em pé no inicio do round, mas Parke aplicou boa queda e dominou no chão, estabilizando por cima e anulando Fletcher no primeiro assalto. O segundo round começou da mesma forma, com Norman Parke controlando Colin Fletcher no chão e trabalhando da maneira que queria. Apesar de Colin ter tentado uma reação em pé no fim do segundo assalto, foi tarde para reverter a pontuação conseguida por Parke. Fletcher veio para o terceiro assalto tentando definir, com boas sequências de golpes, mas não consegui nocautear, deixando para Norman a vitória e o contrato do UFC.

Pela primeira luta do card principal, Rousimar Toquinho enfrentou Hector Lombard. A luta começou com Hector indo pra cima e dominando o centro do octógono. Toquinho respeitou o adversário, manteve a distância e soltou bons chutes baixos. Porém, as investidas de Toquinho não surtiram efeito e Hector conseguiu boa sequência, que levou o cubano à vitória por nocaute técnico no primeiro assalto.

Destaque também para vitória de Chad Mendes sobre Yaotzin Meza, com um nocaute em menos de dois minutos do primeiro assalto.

Esse combate será a final do peso leve do “TUF Smashes”. O americano Norman “Stormin” Parker (16v, 2d) tem experiência no MMA e soube usar essa vantagem muito bem dentro da casa. Norman treina na equipe de Jiu-Jitsu de Robert Drysdale, portanto sabe muito bem usar as quedas e aplicar a finalização. Já o compatriota Colin “Freak Show” Fletcher (8v, 1d) tem uma envergadura maior, sabe muito bem defender as quedas e deve querer manter a luta em pé para surpreender o rival.

2. Hector Lombard vs Rousimar Palhares

Hector “Lightning” Lombard chegou cheio de moral ao Ultimate, mas acabou decepcionando na sua estreia contra Tim Boetsch, no UFC 149, em julho, em luta morna. Agora o judoca cubano tem outra chance grande de mostrar seu valor. Já o mineirinho Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares precisa voltar a vencer e provar que é um dos tops da categoria. Será que Toquinho leva mais um pé para casa ou Hector derruba?

Dono de um bom muay thai,  ele quer derrubar o australiano Brad Scott (8v, 1d),  que vem de seis vitórias consecutivas e varreu todos os seus oponentes na casa do “TUF” para chegar até a final. Scott, exímio wrestler, deve tentar botar para baixo e trabalhar a luta no solo.

This Friday, the octagon touches down in the Gold Coast Convention Center in Queensland, Austrialia, where UFC on FX 6 will unfold. GRACIEMAG.com put together a list of the five fights you won’t want to miss on the card, if you’re a Jiu-Jitsu fan.

1. Norman Parker vs. Colin Fletcher

This fight marks the final chapter of the lightweight division from the TUF Smashes reality show. US national Norman “Stormin” Parker (16w, 2l) has MMA experience and knew how to use it to his advantage in the house. Norman trains at Roberto Drysdale’s Jiu-Jitsu team, so he’s plenty well versed with takedowns and submissions. Now, his countryman Colin “Freak Show” Fletcher (8w, 1l) has greater reach, good takedown defense and should look to keep the fight standing.

2. Hector Lombard vs. Rousimar Palhares

Hector “Lightning” Lombard was highly touted when he first joined the UFC fray, but ended up disappointing on his promotional debut against Tim Boetsch at UFC 149. Now the Cuban judoka has another chance to show his potential. Now, Brazil’s Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares needs to rediscover his winning ways to remain relevant in the division. Might Toquinho manage to take Hector’s foot home with him?

3. Chad Mendes vs. Yaotzin Meza

Still craving José Aldo’s belt, Chad Mendes is coming off a win over Cody McKenzie at UFC 148 last June and was set to face up-and-coming Nova União star Hacran Dias, who had to pull out due to injury. Could Dias’s replacement, Yaotzin Meza, be easy prey, or will he give Chad more than he can chew?

Prediction: Chad Mendes

4. George Sotiropoulos vs. Ross Pearson

Things haven’t been going too well for submission whiz Sotiropoulos, who now has to contend with the strike-savvy Ross Pearson in trying to right his ship. Could his Jiu-Jitsu serve him well at home?

Prediction: George Sotiropoulos

5. Robert Whittaker vs. Brad Scott

At just 21 years of age, Robert Whitaker (9w, 2l) is heading into the middleweight final of the TUF Smashes reality show. With solid Thai boxing, he will be looking for the knockdown on Australia’s Brad Scott (8w, 1l), who is riding six back-to-back wins and ran roughshod through all his opponents on the show in making it to the final. Scott, the masterful wrestler, should be looking for the takedown and ground and pound.

The welterweight finalists for the reality show, Robert Whittaker and Brad Scott, made their bout official with Whittaker coming in at 170 pounds, and Scott tipping the scale at the 171-pound limit.

The lightweight finalists, Colin Fletcher and Norman Parke, each weighed in for their fight at 155 pounds.
