A legendary BJJ fighter and a teacher at Gracie Barra Birmingham, today Braulio Estima brings you a crucial tip for finishing via Estima lock.

To apply this lock, perfected by Braulio and his brother Victor through years of competing in the world’s biggest tournaments, one must isolate the foot that will be attacked, use a grip like in a rear naked choke, and sit with the opponent’s foot held fast.

The secret is explained by Braulio. First he points to the need for your opponent’s leg to be flexed so that they don’t have the body angle to spin and defend. Grip made, with the Achilles heel locked in the curvature between bicep and forearm, Braulio sits and positions himself to squeeze with his leg locked on his opponent’s hip so that said opponent has less mobility to spin.

Para aplicar a chave, aprimorada por Braulio e o irmão Victor Estima ao longo de anos nos maiores torneio de Jiu-Jitsu do mundo, é preciso isolar o pé adversário que será atacado, aplicar uma pegada tal qual a do mata-leão, e sentar-se com o pé do adversário justo no golpe.

O segredo para aplicar a finalização com maestria é explicado por Braulio. Primeiro, o faixa-preta atenta para que a perna do adversário esteja flexionada, para que este não tenha ângulo corporal para girar e defender. Depois de feita a pegada, com o calcanhar de aquiles encaixado na curvatura entre o bíceps e o antebraço, Braulio senta e se posiciona para arrochar, com sua perna encaixada no quadril inimigo para que este tenha menos mobilidade para girar.

Erberth Santos at the São Paulo BJJ Pro.

The São Paulo BJJ Pro brought the house down in Barueri last week. Among the finalists, as usual, was Erberth Santos (Atos). The sitting super-heavyweight world champion won the ultra-heavyweight title as he defeated Silva (GFTeam) with a foot lock. You can watch it in this video.

They were each attempting a takedown. After failing at that, Nascimento pulled Santos into guard. After opening, Santos used the 50/50 and, from it, after getting attacked on the foot, responded by successfully applying a foot lock.

Victor Estima is one fo the most talented and accomplished talents of his generation of black belts.

In 2009, just before the ADCC, he and his brother Braulio developed a fast and powerful way to finish the opponent when he or she uses the foot to push you back as you try to pass the guard.

They named it the Estima lock.

In this video, Victor explains how the trap works and highlights the most important points for making it work.

In the final match, Luca faced the dangerous guard of English Oliver Geddes (Roger Gracie Academy) but did very well: the Italian submitted with a foot lock.

“I already knew that Oliver was a finisher and does not give much importance to the points in the match. Thus, I carefully protected my feet and my knees, since he is very good in these submissions from the waist down. I was struggling but when I saw the possibility, I counter-attacked and Oliver tapped.” Luca commented in conversation with GRACIEMAG.com.

Days from the fifth edition of the WPJJC professional event in Abu Dhabi, the elite of Jiu-Jitsu black belts are heading the UAE.

One of the promises of the championship to be held on April 13 and 14 is Renato Cardoso, medium heavyweight from CheckMat.

Rodrigo Cavaca’s student comes from a loss to Andre Galvao in the Pan, by submission, but full of desire to shine in the up to 82kg category.

“I spent one week unwilling to train. But after that moment, I felt a much greater willingness to return to training so I can win the next fight. Next time, I know I need to be more careful with the start of the fight, always trying to be ahead on the scorecards so I don’t need to expose myself”, says Renato. “In brown belt, I started losing some fights but I was able to turn the score around and submit, which is much harder to do in the black belt, where there are fewer errors.”

Before facing tough guys in the Emirates, like Claudio Calasans, Guto Campos and Victor Estima, Renato decided to teach GRACIEMAG readers one of his secrets, the straight footlock. Learn to submit, starting from 50/50 guard.

A finalist during the eighth season of TUF, back in 2008, Vinny Magalhães, otherwise known as “Pezão”, left the UFC three years ago. In the meantime, he found he suffered from what experts call “duck syndrom”. That’s right, duck, that creature that swims, flies and runs but isn’t better at any one than the other.

“I’m going to focus on what I do best. I have to sharpen up my wrestling to get takedowns and concentrate only on MMA, nothing more, Vinny told the website MMAWeekly.com. “I don’t want do be like what I was three years ago, when I was doing a bit of everything but not good enough in any one thing,” added the champion of M-1 Global MMA promotion and the ADCC, the premier submission grappling championship in the world.

1. “WHO’D BE DUMB ENOUGH TO TAKE DOWN A JIU-JITSU GUY”

“I used to think that if the guy took me down I’d finish him. But think about it, who’d be dumb enough to take down a top-level Jiu-Jitsu guy? I lost some fights because of that, the way I lost to Eliot Marshall, a fight that played out entirely on the feet. The biggest change I made was to my mindset: I have to train like a professional fighter,” he stated, illustrating how he’s going about working towards his dream of fighting the best in the world in the UFC.

2. “TRAIN TO BE A FINISHER FIRST”

The owner of an attacking and creative game in the ring, Vinny is also known around Jiu-Jitsu circles for his limber ligaments, allowing him to escape otherwise painful subs unscathed and counter-attack decisively. GRACIEMAG.com couldn’t resist and asked him, “Can one train for this type of elastic defending? Is the best attack defense?”

“Look, I feel it’s more important to train to be a finisher starting when you’re at the lower belt ranks. That’s precisely what I’ve been focusing on ever since purple belt. As far as limber defenses goes, I sincerely don’t know if it’s something you can train for. It varies from person to person, comes with time. If just because I’d never risk the physical well-being of a student, should he not be as flexible as me,” reflects the Gracie Tijuca black belt.

3. “FIRST COMES PHYSICAL WELL-BEING. COURAGE COMES WITH TIME”

“When I withstand a hold, there really is some technique involved in what I do. But I feel that the factors of flexibility and courage, as with my defense against Fabricio Werdum in the ADCC final, was worth a lot more than the technique itself. When it comes down to it, can you practice that? You may very well be able to, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, just as no one ever recommended it or taught me to do anything like that,” he says in closing.

The winner of the absolute and the under-88 kg divisions at the ADCC last September, André Galvão was one of the characters highlighted in an article coming up in the next issue of GRACIEMAG.

Speaking with our editor Marcelo Dunlop, André shared pointers and teachings about rehydrating during Jiu-Jitsu and MMA training, and proved that drinking water is an art unto itself and a vital aspect in a competitor finding success.

The article already complete—you can check it out next month—,André Galvão explained the changes his career has undergone since winning the absolute title of the burliest grappling tournament on the planet.

“Keeping with the same topic, I really was thirsty to win that championship; I was truly craving that title. Life now is just beyond great. The academy in San Diego is going awesome—so many new students and visitors coming in since I won. I was able to expand the academy, set up a much bigger dojo area, and I’m just waiting on some finishing touches to send you guys photos. It’s awesome, now I have more room for physical conditioning. It’s good for everybody, great for the team,” he said.

“These days I’ve been getting a lot of emails with different offers—invitations to do seminars and from MMA teams. I sealed a sponsorship deal with Zebra Mats. I’ve been getting a lot of offers from gi brands as well. I’m overjoyed; I think it’s the first time I’ve ever turned down sponsorship deals [laughs]!,” recalls Galvão, adding that he doesn’t have any fights lined up at the moment.

“I don’t have any fights coming up; I’m just working with my students and investing a lot in them. I want to see the team coming up with results, and for that to happen I have to be dedicated to them, too. I’m so happy,” he added in closing.
