Changing the routine of the gymnasium, Maracanãzinho was the stage for some of today’s best athletes to stamp their passports to Beijing, the host city of the tenth edition of the international tournament ADCC 2013 in October.

The Brazilian trial lasted all day Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., on April 20, and crowned young stars and some surprises. The commonality of champions, however, was the very high technical level and good physical condition.

After an afternoon of elimination fights, the winners won the all expenses paid trip to the championship in China. See all GRACIEMAG.com witnessed during the finals of the event:

Up to 66kg: João Miyao beat Marcio André by decision

After a great match, the purple belt Marcio André (Nova União) and brown belt João Miyao (Cicero Costha) made a highly technical and strategic final. After a good few seconds of attempts of takedowns on both sides, Marcio was the first to pull for his guard, then João sat down to work his berimbolo. Marcio defended with style all attempts of submissions in the foot and knee. The fight went a good deal of time with both players sitting down, trying sweeps and submission attacks on the ankle and knee. The fight ended 0-0 and went to the extra time of four minutes. The athletes rolled out of the mats with their feet twisted, but the score remained zero. After a quick conference between the referee and the table, the victory went to João Miyao.

Up to 77kg: Leozada Nogueira beat Victor Silvério with a guillotine

The category was strong, with names like Murilo Santana, Edson Diniz and Carlo Prater, but after a series of good fights, the finalists were Victor Silverio (GFTeam) and Leonardo “Leozada” Nogueira (Pequeno). Brother of Shooto and WEC Alexandre Pequeno, Leonardo was one of the most technical of the championship with an explosive back defense and a guillotine in automatic mode. In the final, the brown belt Victor began a mile per minute, took the fight down and took the back. However, he couldn’t hold Nogueira there, or end the match. Leonardo then reacted, and using an attempt by Silverio, used the guillotine to submit and get the ticket. Alexandre Pequeno, who didn’t compete since he was giving seminars in Mexico, must have liked it.

Up to 88kg: Claudio Calasans beat Paulo Baraúna by 3-0

After a series of tough fights, like the semifinal with Delson Pé de Chumbo who won with a leglock, Claudio Calasans (Atos) faced the MMA ace Paulo Baraúna (Alliance) in the final. The fight was mostly on the feet. Calasans began gripping on the neck and working on Paulo’s foot to take him down. Baraúna managed to get up and keep the fight standing up again. Then, magically, the good judoka Calasans shot on, slipped to the back and turned into a backpack on the Alliance’s fighter back. The rear naked choke didn’t come, but the points (3, according to ADCC) yes. Calasans is going to China, too.

Up to 99kg: João Gabriel Rocha submitted Cristiano Titi on the back

After a series of opponents were submitted along the way, João Gabriel Rocha (Soul Fighters) and Cristiano Lazzarini (Gracie Barra) made a final of giants. João pulled the opponent to his guard, trying his sweep game. Titi was well balanced and trying to pass the guard, until João managed to slip away and apply the rear naked choke. “Gee, I’m a black belt for four months, I’m thrilled,” he said.

Above 99kg: Rodrigo Cavaca submitted Kitner Mendonça with a gogoplata

With the deadliest guard in the tournament, Rodrigo Cavaca (CheckMat) went to the final against Kitner Mendonça (Ryan Gracie), looking to apply more of his triangles or knee locks. After the referee initiated the fight, Rodrigo automatically sat to guard and Kitner was up, trying to put pressure to pass. Cavaca held the opponent with his hand pushing the shoulders and making good grips on Kitner’s arms. And then came the spectacular submission. When Kitner threw his weight to pass the guard, Cavaca raised his shin, pressed the neck with his hand and closed the fight, and the event, with a beautiful gogoplata.

In the female categories, the tickets to Beijing went to Michele Tavares and Fernanda Mazzelli:

Up to 60kg: Michele Tavares beat Michelle Nicolini by 6-0

Ana Michele Tavares (Nova União) went for it in the trisl, and had to fight with everything she had. In the semifinals, she overcame her friend Ana Maria India by points. In the final, she saved herself from Michelle Nicolini’s (Check Mat) sweeps, she took the back twice and won by 6-0.

Over 60kg: Fernanda Mazzelli beat Talita Treta by 2-0

Fernanda Mazzelli (Striker) and Talita Nogueira (Ryan Gracie) had no easy task to reach the final, despite the absence of Luanna Alzuguir, who didn’t show up at the gym. But the category had Marina Ribeiro and other great fighters who were eliminated along the way. In the final, Mazzelli and Treta exchanged moves standing up until the points started. Fernanda then fell rapidly over Talita and kept the score in her favor. Asked how she scored, she said excitedly: “I can’t remember!”

A faixa-preta Fernanda Mazelli é mais uma garota cascuda que vai disputar o WPJJC em Abu Dhabi, com todas as despesas pagas, em abril. Eleita vereadora em Guarapari, no Espírito Santo, ela venceu o absoluto pesado ao superar Talita Nogueira (Ryan Gracie) por 2 a 0, na final.

“Ano passado só consegui a vaga na última chance, na Seletiva de Gramado. Foi ótimo vencer logo. Está um pouco difícil treinar porque agora sou vereadora e estou conciliando o Jiu-Jitsu com minhas obrigações na câmara de Guarapari”, disse ela ao GRACIEMAG.com.

O domingo no ginásio Amadeu Teixeira, em Manaus, foi de satisfação e dever cumprido para os 13 lutadores que conseguiram carimbar o passaporte para disputar o WPJJC, que rola em Abu Dhabi em abril.

Entre os destaques, o cearense Gilson Nunes Neném fisgou a vaga depois de superar Isaque Paiva na grande final da categoria 65kg, por 2 a 0, enquanto Renato Cardoso (CheckMat) finalizou Felipe Preguiça na categoria até 83kg e também brilhou.

No feminino, o grande nome foi Luiza Monteiro (Cícero Costha), que passou por Bia Mesquita (Gracie Humaitá) nas vantagens e também vai aos Emirados com tudo pago.

The winner of the medium heavyweight division and runner-up at absolute at the Brazilian National Championship, Fernanda Mazelli of Striker academy upheld the solid run from the WPJJC in Abu Dhabi last month.

“I’d had a great campaign in Abu Dhabi, and at the Brazilian Nationals I repeated the performance. I won my weight division and had three fights in the absolute, losing in the final by 7-2 to Michelle Nicolini,” said the native of Espirito Santo state, who derived a worthwhile lesson from the CBJJ championship. “I learned that no one’s invincible; when you’re prepared and focused anything can happen—even victory.”

In a chat with GRACIEMAG.com, Fernanda remembered the path she took ever since blue belt. (Below, check out Fernanda Mazelli against Talita Treta at the WPJJC tryouts in Gramado, Brazil, last March.)

1. Former ballerina, swimmer, and now Jiu-Jitsu champion—what was this trajectory like for you?

I always liked doing sports. I started with swimming, even competed at state level, and then went into ballet, but just for a day. I ended up really getting into Jiu-Jitsu because my sister and cousins did it. I didn’t have a clue what Jiu-Jitsu was but went in anyways, and I ended up liking it. I didn’t take it seriously until I started competing. Little by little I got to liking it and dedicating myself to it. My cousins and sister stopped, and I continued. I started when I was 11. I’m from Guarapari, Espirito Santo, and have trained with Thiago Oliveira since the beginning. My team is Striker JJ. It’s a new team but we’re a force in our state. We have lots of affiliates and new competitors coming into the scene. We’re the only Capixabas [natives of Espirito Santo State] to compete in Abu Dhabi—me and Pedro Paulo Agrizzi, who won at purple belt.

2. WHEN DID YOU START TO SEE RESULTS ON THE MAT?

I started coming up with good results when I was a blue belt. I won the Brazilian Nationals and the Worlds. Today I hold six Brazilian titles at weight and three at absolute, from blue to black belt. I never lost a fight at blue belt—I won them all. But my big moment is now that I’m a black belt, the apex of Jiu-Jitsu. I’m training a lot—morning, afternoon and night. My Jiu-Jitsu is coming along; I’m more dedicated, and you can see the results. I’m beating girls I’d lost to for a long time, and now I’m getting back on my feet.

3. HOW DO YOU SEE YOUR GAME COMING ALONG?

My favorite technique is the guard; but I’m changing my game. I’ve been training better on top lately, but even so I love the triangle; it combines with my game because I have long legs, and that makes the move easier for me, besides how it makes it harder for the opponent to defend.

4. HAVE YOU ANY TIPS FOR READERS WHO WANT TO GET GOOD AT THE TRIANGLE?

The trick is to always practice the basics, the Jiu-Jitsu fundamentals. I don’t feel that it’s tedious. I do them many times every day. Repeat them a lot; it’s worth the effort.

5. WHAT’S YOUR GOAL FOR THE 2012 JIU-JITSU WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP?

I’m going all out. Right now it’s about ironing out some of the positions I got wrong at the Brazilian Nationals and trying to do better in California.

Campeã brasileira de Jiu-Jitsu na categoria meio-pesado, vice no absoluto, Fernanda Mazelli (Striker) manteve um desempenho obtido mês passado no WPJJC, em Abu Dhabi.

“Eu já tinha feito uma grande campanha em Abu Dhabi e no Brasileiro repeti o desempenho. Ganhei a categoria e acabei fazendo três lutas no absoluto, perdendo a final por 7 a 2 para a Michelle Nicolini“, disse a capixaba, que assimilou uma boa lição na competição da CBJJ. “Aprendi que ninguém é invencivel, quando você está preparada e focada tudo pode acontecer, inclusive a vitória”.

Em conversa com o GRACIEMAG.com, Fernanda lembra sua caminhada desde a faixa-azul. (Abaixo, confira Fernanda Mazelli contra Talita Treta na Seletiva de Gramado, em março.)

 1. Ex-bailarina, nadadora e hoje campeã de Jiu-Jitsu. Como foi sua trajetória?

Sempre gostei de fazer esporte, comecei na natação, cheguei a competir em nível estadual, e fui tentar o balé, mas só por um dia! Acabei indo para o Jiu-Jitsu mesmo, porque minha irmã e minhas primas faziam. Não sabia o que era o Jiu-Jitsu mas fui mesmo assim, e fui gostando. Eu não levava a sério, até que comecei a competir. Aos poucos fui gostando e me dedicando. Minhas primas e irmã pararam e eu continuei. Comecei aos 11 anos, sou de Guarapari, Espírito Santo, e treino com o Thiago Oliveira desde o começo. A minha equipe é a Striker JJ, é uma equipe nova mas a gente é muito forte no nosso estado. Temos muitas filiais e competidores novos chegando. Fomos os únicos capixabas a representarem o nosso estado em Abu Dhabi, eu e Pedro Paulo Agrizzi, que sagrou-se campeão na roxa.

2. Quando os bons resultados começaram a surgir nos tatames?

Meus resultados começaram a aparecer desde a faixa-azul. Fui campeã brasileira e mundial. Hoje, tenho seis títulos brasileiros na categoria e três no absoluto, contando da faixa-azul até a preta. Eu nunca perdi uma luta na faixa-azul, ganhei tudo, mas o grande momento está sendo agora na faixa-preta, que é mesmo o ápice do Jiu-Jitsu. Estou treinando muito, de manhã, tarde e noite. Meu Jiu-Jitsu segue evoluindo, estou me dedicando mais, dá para ver pelos meus resultados. Estou ganhando das meninas de quem eu estava perdendo há um bom tempo, e agora estou dando a volta por cima.

3. Como você analisaria seu jogo?

A minha técnica favorita é fazer guarda, mas estou mudando meu jogo. Tenho treinado melhor por cima, mas mesmo assim adoro o triângulo, combina com o meu jogo porque tenho pernas grandes e isso facilita dar o golpe, além de dificultar a defesa da oponente.

4. Tem algum macete para o leitor ou leitora que deseja ficar bom no triângulo?

O macete é sempre treinar o feijão-com-arroz mesmo, as posições básicas do Jiu-Jitsu. Não veja como algo chato, faça muitas vezes por dia, repita bastante que vale a pena.

5. Qual a meta para o Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu 2012?

Vou com tudo. Agora é ajustar algumas posições que errei no Brasileiro, e tentar dar meu melhor na Califórnia.

Glamor, dazzling matches, surprises, rivalry, controversy—the tourney had it all, and the result of this explosive and exciting formula was Nivaldo Oliveira getting crowned the new king of the Brazilian Nationals. Amid so many favorites, CheckMat rep Nil made it through unscathed and captured gold at both weight and in the absolute. Nivaldo, who has been coming up with solid results for some time now, will be going into the Worlds at full throttle.

The campaign began on Saturday, when Nil secured his place in the final of the absolute. At medium heavyweight, on Sunday, the black belt had four matches, taking on the likes of Yan Cabral, who he beat by disqualification, and Rômulo Barral, who he outdid on advantage points. In the grand decider, Nivaldo had his work cut out for him against Willian Martins, who had a 4-2 lead over him from sweeps up until the eighth minute, whe Martins was caught off guard by a snug kneebar. Nivaldo didn’t need to go through with the final of the absolute division, as his teammate Antonio Carlos “Cara de Sapato” was there to close out with him.

Rooster warrior

The first of Sunday’s finals took place at 4:20 pm. At that very moment, just a few kilometers away, Botafogo and Fluminense were playing to determine the winner of the Rio de Janeiro soccer championship, and not long later Santos and Guarani would do the same for the state of São Paulo. But at Grajaú Country Club and all across Brazil, keeping up over Twitter, attention was turned to Jiu-Jitsu. Igor dos Santos of CheckMat and Felipe Costa kicked off the series of decisive matches. Igor landed a sweep, and when Felipe attempted to recover, he pounced for a spot-on kneebar.

“I came from Búzios to train with Ricardo Vieira. Over there I teach 120 people at a goodwill project. I get on the bus and come all the way here to Rio to train,” said a jubilant Igor after his three matches for the day were done.

Who’s Tiago?

Haven’t heard of him? He’s José Tiago, another from Cícero Costha’s stable of fearless students. He’s been having a string of narrow misses, but he came up spades in triumphant fashion in the light featherweight division at the Brazilian Nationals. He got the tapout in his first three matches—by wristlock, kneebar and a choke from the back—and in the final as well, facing the favored Ary Farias. He took it to Ary from the get-go. He passed guard, took his back and finished up with a choke.

“I’d lost to Ary in the final in 2008, when we were purple belts. I also took second when we were browns. This time I managed to win it,” said Tiago in celebration.

Saggioro’s time

Last year, Leonardo Saggioro hit a wall in the final, against Bruno Frazatto. This time the student of Ricardo Marques, the teacher who produced the black belt Bernardo Faria, secured top spot. In doing so, “Cascão”, as he’s known, submitted the four opponents he had in his way, three of them via triangle and the fourth by choke from back mount. The triangle was what he used in the early minutes of the final, against David Lemes. From the stands, the man who beat him last year could only watch, as Bruno Frazatto had been sidelined by the flu; but another encounter with Saggioro may arise at the Worlds. Promise of a great match.

Lo did it again

The current champ defended his perch, as Leandro Lo wreaked havoc at lightweight and again overcame Michael Langhi in the final. It was an evenly matched affair, where Lo landed a sweep early on and withstood Langhi’s attempts to reciprocate, to win by 2-0. Earlier on, on his way to the final, he managed a choke from the back and an americana lock from side-control. Leandro is yet another from Cícero Costha’s brood to capture gold at the Brazilian Nationals, and having also won this year’s Pan, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with at the Worlds.

Flawless victory

Alexandro Ceconi

First, Alexandro Ceconi got the tapout with a choke from side-control, then he did it again, and in the semifinal his opponent, Antonio Ricardo, got injured and had to pull out from the match. In the decider he met up with game CheckMat rep Paulo Tarcisio, who was a finalist one year prior. After a brief period standing, Ceconi brought on the pressure on the ground. He made it to side-control and scored 2-0 with a knee-on-belly.

Alliance double whammy

Léo Nogueira and Bernardo Faria dominated the super heavyweight division. Bernardo beat two opponents by submission, one a choke from the back and the next a kneebar. But gold went to Nogueira, the current world champion and winner at weight and open weight at the 2011 Brazilian Nationals. Nogueira got the finish in his first match via wristlock from side-control, then he made it past Pan weight and open weight champ “Cara de Sapato”.

“I scored an advantage and passed at the tail end, but I don’t know if there was time left for it to get computed,” he recounted. “I saw the predictions on GRACIEMAG.com, and I wasn’t picked. That just fueled my drive to win,” said Léo jokingly.

Danish champion of Brazil

Having won everything there is to win in the lower belt ranks, Alexander Trans has been on a tear as a black belt. He won the European Championship this season and had a repeat of the final from Lisbon in Rio de Janeiro, against Nova União’s Thiago Gaia. Thiago happened to star in one of the biggest matches of the day, overcoming Leonardo Leite. The final was an evenly matched affair, tied on advantage points up until the last few seconds, when Danish national Trans notched another advantage point.

“My first match was against Vitor Hugo, a really tough athlete, and I won on advantages. Then I took on Antonio Peinado and managed to sweep and pass guard,” he recounted.

Heated combat between the ladies

CheckMat’s Michelle Nicolini provided some great moments. She ended up losing to Talita Treta of Ryan Gracie in the super heavyweight division, one of the finest and most exciting matches of the day. Treta got two takesdowns; Michelle, two sweeps. And in the last few minutes Treta got the sweep to secure victory by a score of 6 to 4.

In the final of the absolute, Michelle faced Fernanda Mazelli of Striker team and came out on top by 7-2.

At light featherweight, Bruna do Nascimento got two sweeps and then finished Bibiana Silva with an armbar. At featherweight, Marina Ribeiro of CheckMat swept and then finished Michelle Tavares of Gracie Humaitá via triangle. Luiza Monteiro swept Barbara Gomes and then finished with a kneebar at lightweight. At medium heavyweight, Fernanda Mazelli took Edika Correia of Brazilian Fight down for the win.

Glamour, grandes lutas, surpresas, rivalidade, polêmica… Teve tudo isso e, nesta fórmula explosiva e emocionante, quem se coroou foi Nivaldo Oliveira, o mais novo rei do Brasileirão. Diante de tantos favoritos, o Nil da CheckMat passou ileso e faturou as medalhas de ouro na categoria e no absoluto. Nivaldo, que vem há algum tempo conquistando bons resultados, chega com força para o Mundial.

A campanha começou no sábado, quando Nil se garantiu na final do absoluto. No peso meio-pesado, no domingo, o faixa-preta fez quatro lutas, tendo enfrentado pedreiras como Yan Cabral (desclassificação) e Rômulo Barral (vantagens). Na decisão, Nivaldo não teve moleza contra Willian Martins, que vencia o combate por 4 a 2 (raspadas) até o oitavo minuto, quando foi surpreendido por uma justa leglock. Na final do absoluto, não precisou enfrentar o companheiro de time Antonio Carlos Cara de Sapato, e ficou com o segundo ouro.

Galinho guerreiro

A primeira final do domingo foi por volta das 16h20min. Neste mesmo momento, há poucos quilômetros dali, Botafogo e Fluminense definiam o Campeonato Carioca de Futebol e, um pouco mais tarde, Santos e Guarani fariam o mesmo pelo Paulista. Mas, no Grajaú Country e em diversas partes do Brasil, acompanhando pelo Twitter, as atenções estavam voltadas ao Jiu-Jitsu. Igor dos Santos (CheckMat) e Felipe Costa deram início às pelejas. Igor tratou de raspar e, quando Felipe tentava se recuperar, atacou de forma certeira o joelho com uma leglock.

“Venho de Búzios para treinar com o Ricardinho Vieira. Lá, dou aula num projeto para 120 pessoas. Entro no ônibus e venho na batalha mesmo treinar aqui no Rio”, comentou o emocionado Igor, que fez três combates ao todo.

Quem é Tiaguinho?

Não sabe? É o José Tiago, mais um dos alunos destemidos de Cícero Costha. Ele vinha batendo na trave, mas chegou ao título brasileiro, no peso pluma, de forma triunfal. Finalizou as primeiras três lutas que fez – mão de vaca, leglock e estrangulamento das costas – e a final também, diante do favorito Ary Farias. Contra Aryzinho, deu blitz desde o início. Passou a guarda, pegou as costas e apertou com um estrangulamento.

“Havia perdido para o Ary na final em 2008, quando éramos faixa-roxa. Também fiquei em segundo na faixa-marrom. Agora consegui ser campeão”, festejou Tiago.

A vez de Saggioro

No ano passado, Leonardo Saggioro foi parado na final, por Bruno Frazatto. Desta vez o aluno de Ricardo Marques, professor que já formou faixas-pretas como Bernardo Faria, garantiu o primeiro posto. Para isso, Cascão, como é conhecido, finalizou os quatro oponentes que teve pela frente, três vezes com o triângulo e outro com um estrangulamento das costas. O triângulo foi o golpe usado nos primeiros minutos da final, contra David Lemes. Da arquibancada, o algoz do ano passado observava a tudo. Uma gripe afastou Bruno Frazatto da competição, mas o reencontro com Saggioro pode acontecer no Mundial. Promessa de boa luta.

Deu Lo de novo

Campeão em 2012, Leandro Lo subiu novamente ao topo do pódio no peso leve e outra vez a final foi contra Michael Langhi. A decisão foi parelha, Lo raspou no início e segurou as raspagens de Langhi para garantir o 2 a 0 no placar. Antes disso, para chegar a final, aplicou um estrangulamento das costas e uma chave americana da imobilização. Leandrinho é mais um representante de Cícero Costha com o ouro no Brasileiro e, tendo também vencido no Pan deste ano, aparece com força para o Mundial.

Vitória perfeita

Murilo Santana não é um cara de muitas palavras, mas isso não quer dizer que não tem poder de fogo. Neste domingo, finalizou todas as lutas. “Foram cinco ou quatro, não me lembro, não sei nem o que fiz direito, ainda estou muito na adrenalina.”

A final foi contra Gabriel Rollo, da Alliance, e o representante da Barbosa JJ definiu com um armlock, quando o combate seguia empatado em 2 a 2. Murilo começou perdendo, mas não se afobou, encaixou o jogo e garantiu o título.

Ceconi no pesado

Alexandro Ceconi primeiro finalizou com um estrangulamento da lateral, depois atacou novamente pelo pescoço e na semifinal, contra Antonio Ricardo, viu o oponente se contundir e abandonar. Na luta decisiva, teve pela frente o duro Paulo Tarcisio (CeckMat), que havia sido finalista do ano anterior. Após uma disputa truncada em pé, Ceconi colocou pressão no chão. Chegou do lado e fez 2 a 0 no placar com um joelho na barriga.

Dobradinha da Alliance

O superpesado foi dominado por Léo Nogueira e Bernardo Faria. Bernardo bateu dois oponentes por finalização, com um estrangulamento pelas costas e depois com uma leglock. Mas o ouro ficou com Léo Nogueira, atual campeão mundial e vencedor do brasileiro 2011 no peso e no absoluto. Nogueira finalizou a primeira com uma mão de vaca da imobilização e depois passou pelo campeão peso e absoluto do Pan Cara de Sapato.

“Fiz a vantagem e passei no fim, mas acho que não deu tempo de computar”, contou. “Vi os palpites do GRACIEMAG.com para o evento e eu não fui escolhido. Isso me deu ainda mais vontade de vencer”, brincou Léo.

Dinamarquês no Brasileirão

Depois de vencer tudo nas graduações intermediárias, Alexander Trans já vem fazendo estrago na faixa-preta. Venceu no Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu desta temporada e reeditou a final de Lisboa no Rio de Janeiro, contra Thiago Gaia (Nova União). Thiago, aliás, protagonizou uma das grandes lutas do dia, tendo derrotado Leonardo Leite. A final foi parelha, empatada nas vantagens até os segundos finais, quando o europeu Trans conseguiu mais uma vantagem.

“Fiz a primeira luta contra o Vitor Hugo, um atleta muito duro e venci nas vantagens. Depois tive o Antonio Peinado e consegui raspar e passar a guarda”, contou.

Lutas quentes entre as meninas

Michelle Nicolini (CheckMat) proporcionou alguns dos grandes momentos. Acabou batida por Talita Treta (Ryan Gracie) no pesado, numa das melhores e mais emocionantes lutas do dia. Treta derrubou duas vezes, Michelle raspou duas e, nos últimos minutos, Treta raspou para garantir o triunfo por 6 a 4.

Na decisão do absoluto, Michelle teve Fernanda Mazelli (Striker) pela frente e foi melhor por 7 a 2.

No pluma, Bruna do Nascimento raspou duas vezes e depois finalizou Bibiana Silva com um armlock. No pena, Marina Ribeiro (CheckMat) raspou e depois finalizou Michelle Tavares (Gracie Humaitá) com um triângulo. Luiza Monteiro raspou Barbara Gomes e depois finalizou com uma leglock no leve. No meio-pesado, Fernanda Mazelli quedou Erika Correia (Brazilian Fight).

What would bring someone to take a one-hour ride by bus to a scalding hot gymnasium at another city on a sun-drenched long weekend in Rio de Janeiro? The answer’s simple: top-notch Jiu-Jitsu. This Saturday marked day one of the World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship-qualifying tournament held in Niteroi, a city across the Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro. The gymnasium wasn’t in the best of shape but the fighters made up for it, making the trip worthwhile for anyone who forwent spending the day at the beach.

Besides getting to meet up with old friends, the highlight of the event was being able to get a glompse of heavyweight and absolute word champion Rodolfo Vieira. The GFTeam ace submitted three opponents on his way to Sunday’s under-92 kg final against Barbosa team’s Luiz Panza. Besides the excitement of having made it through to the weight class decider, Rodolfo was even more overjoyed by the news he would he seeing action at the European Open later this month: “It was a surprise. A friend of ours said he’d pay the trip, and I’m going,” he reported.

In the brown and black belt division, Rodolfo’s team secured another four berths in the main event in Abu Dhabi. In the over 92 kg division, Ricardo Evangelista overcame Bruno Bastos (Nova União) by a sweep. Besides having overcome one of last year’s finalists in Abu Dhabi, Evangelista went path three other opponents. At the other end of the bracket, Thiago Gaia (Nova União) had four matches himself. He had his work cut out for him in the semifinal against Igor Silva, but Gaia managed to work his way to back control and squeeze out a choke.

Another Master Julio Cesar student, Vitor Henrique reached the under-83 kg final after four matches. The semifinal started out with him training by a sweep to Victor Bonfim (Gordo Evolve), but he reciprocated with a sweep of his own and notched two more advantages for the win.

Barbosa team representative Adriano Silva had four matches of his own. In going through to the final, he beat David Vieira by a sweep.

The under-74 kg division belonged to GFTeam, with Vinicius Marinho and Theodoro Canal dominating the action. Marinho had three matches, with the semifinal standing out most, where he faced No-Gi Pan winner Davi Ramos. In a back-and-forth affair stuck in 50/50 guard, the match ended tied at 8-8 but with Vinicius holding a two-advantage point lead. Canal beat four opponents in closing out with his teammate.

Now Master Julio’s team sat out the under-65 kg division. The weight class belonged to the veteran Gabriel Willcox (Brazilian Fight), who can often be seen putting on a show at the Rio International Masters championship. Ahead of him, the black belt will take on the also-experienced Marcelo “Galinha” dos Santos (Instituto Reação). Willcox had four matches, while Marcelo had three really good ones.

In the femae division, Gabrielle Garcia (Alliance) carried on with her winning ways and now has Fernanda Mazelli ahead of her in the final. In the under-61 kg final, Jessica Santos takes on Hellen Bastos.

O sábado em Niterói foi de definições na seletiva do Rio de Janeiro para o World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship, competição que leva tos campeões ao evento principal, em Abu Dhabi.

O que levaria uma pessoa sã a sair da praia num sol danado, no meio de um feriado prolongado, e andar de ônibus por aproximadamente uma hora para um ginásio numa cidade vizinha? Resposta simples, caro leitor: Jiu-Jitsu de qualidade. O primeiro dia de disputas da seletiva para o World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship, neste sábado, em Niterói, contou com bons pegas. O ginásio não estava nas melhores condições, mas os lutadores mandaram ver e, para quem deixou a praia de lado num dia lindo, posso dizer, valeu a pena.

Além do encontro com diversos amigos, foi a chance de ver em ação, por exemplo, o campeão mundial no peso e absoluto Rodolfo Vieira. Para se garantir nas finais da categoria até 92 kg, a fera da GFTeam finalizou três oponentes. Na decisão, que acontece neste sábado, Vieira defende a sua hegemonia contra Luiz Panza, fera da equipe Barbosa. Empolgado, Rodolfo aproveitou para confirmar que estará em ação no Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu. “Foi uma surpresa. Um amigo nosso disse que pagaria a passagem e estou indo”, comentou.

Na divisão dos faixas marrom e preta, equipe de Rodolfo garantiu ainda mais quatro representantes nas finais. No + 92 kg, Ricardo Evangelista bateu na semifinal Bruno Bastos (Nova União), com uma raspada. Além de ter superado um dos finalistas do ano passado em Abu Dhabi, Evangelista derrotou outros três oponentes. Do outro lado da chave, Thiago Gaia (Nova União) também fez quatro lutas. A semifinal vinha duríssima, contra Igor Silva, mas Gaia conseguiu escorregar para as costas e aplicar um estrangulamento.

Também aluno do mestre Julio Cesar, Vitor Henrique chegou à final. No peso 83kg, fez quaro combates. Na semifinal, começou perdendo por uma raspagem para Victor Bonfim (Gordo Evolve), mas devolveu na mesma moeda e conseguiu duas vantagens. Representante da Barbosa, Adriano Silva também fez quatro combates. Para garantir vaga na decisão, conseguiu uma raspada em David Vieira.

No 74 kg, a GFTeam dominou com Vinicius Marinho e Theodoro Canal. Marinho fez três lutas, com destaque para a semifinal, contra o campeão Pan-Americano Sem kimono Davi Ramos. Num vai e volta de raspagens na guarda 50/50, o combate terminou empatado em 8 a 8, mas Vinicius conseguiu duas vantagens. Para fechar com o companheiro, Canal bateu quatro oponentes.

Já no peso até 65kg a equipe do mestre Julio ficou de fora. Nesta foi bem o veterano Gabriel Willcox (Soul Fighters), que também sempre costuma aprontar no Internacional de Masters. Pela frente, o faixa-preta vai ter o também experiente Marcelo “Galinha” dos Santos (Instituto Reação). Willcox fez quatro lutas, enquanto Marcelo fez três muito boas.

No feminino, segue brilhando Gabrielle Garcia (Alliance), que vai ter Fernanda Mazelli pela frente. No peso até 61kg, Jessica Santos encara Hellen Bastos.

Na principal categoria, que reúne atletas da faixa marrom e preta, disputas acirradas e surpresas na hora de decisão. Manaus é famosa por formar grandes lutadores de Jiu-Jitsu e eles fizeram jus à fama. Vale destacar também a excelente estrutura da Arena Amadeu Teixeira no evento organizado por Fabio Holanda, com apoio da Secretaria de Esportes da Cidade.

65kg

Nas semifinais, se classificaram duas feras locais. Gabriel Moraes raspou Victor Otoniel. Já Luiz Fernando pegou as costas e finalizou Raymison Michile com um estrangulamento. Na finalíssima, Luiz Fernando bateu Gabriel Moraes por 7 a 2, com uma raspagem, passagem de guarda e uma punição.

74kg

Antonio Carlos não teve vida fácil e passou na semi por André Fabiano na decisão dos árbitros, após empate em 0 a 0. Do outro lado da chave, Paulo Ledesma passou a guarda e pegou as costas de Deive Rerison. Na decisão, Antonio garantiu mais um ouro para Manaus. Passou quatro vezes a guarda do oponente da Atos para se assegurar no WPJJ em Abu Dhabi.

83kg

Diego Borges mostrou um Jiu-Jitsu agressivo e foi uma das surpresas da seletiva ao vencer Claudio Calasans. Na semi, contra Vitor Hugo, venceu por 3 vantagens a 2 após o empate em 2 a 2 nos pontos. Claudio Calasans contou com dois pontos de punição – o oponente saiu da área com um estrangulamento encaixado – para seguir adiante. Na decisão, Borges veio com tudo no início, pegou as costas e apertou com um estrangulamento. Calasans, campeão peso e absoluto do World Pro em 2010, escapou, mas não conseguiu se recuperar no placar. Mais um passaporte carimbado para a cidade de Manaus.

92kg

Antonio Braga Neto finalizou Rigoney Castro com uma chave omoplata aos 2min50s. Mais rápido ainda foi Alexandro Ceconi, que estrangulou Valdir Antonio com um estrangulamento da meia-guarda em apenas 40 segundos. Na decisão, Braga foi mais um atleta local que mandou bem. Imprimiu o ritmo e abriu 11 pontos com duas raspagens, uma passagem de guarda e uma montada, fazendo a festa com sua torcida.

+92kg

Bernardo Faria seguiu rumo à final após finalizar Thiago Souza com uma chave omoplata. Outro finalista, Igor Silva tratou de fechar a guarda em Arimar Neves e, com duas raspagens, seguidas de montadas, fez 12 a 0 para se classificar na decisão. Contra Bernardo, Igor começou com uma queda, mas o representante da Alliance virou o placar: raspou da meia-guarda, passou e pegou as costas (7 a 2).

Feminino

63kg

Michelle Nicolini pegou as costas e aplicou um armlock em Davina Maciel. Beatriz Mesquita também usou o armlock para seguir à final. Duas das grandes representantes do Jiu-Jitsu feminino, Bia e Michelle travaram um duro combate, que terminou empatado nas vantagens. Nicolini tentava raspar, enquanto Bia não conseguia transpor a guarda da adversária. Na decisão dos árbitros, Bia Mesquita levou a melhor. As duas haviam se enfrentado na final do absoluto do Mundial Sem Kimono, com vitória de Nicolini.

+63kg

Na semifinal, a faixa-roxa Jéssica da Silva já surpreendera ao deixar para trás a faixa-preta Fabiana Santos. Na decisão, teve pela frente a experiente Fernanda Mazelli. No final da luta, Mazelli sofreu uma punição e a vitória ficou com Jéssica, mais uma representante da cidade de Manaus no topo do pódio.

Organizado por Fabio Holanda e com apoio da secretaria de Esportes de Manaus, já começaram no ginásio Amadeu Teixeira as disputas que vão dar 13 passagens e estadia para lutar no World Pro 2012, em Abu Dhabi.

Um belo palco foi montado para os lutadores, como mostra a foto acima. Entre as feras presentes, Bernardo Faria, Antonio Braga Neto, Alexandro Ceconi, Claudio Calasans, Michelle Nicoline, Bia Mesquita e Fernanda Mazelli. O árbitro do UFC Mario Yamasaki também apareceu para ver tudo de perto.
