The 2015 Worlds No-Gi also had a lot of great matches and thrilling outcomes in the master division.

Athletes over the 30 years old mark gave all they got to win the desired gold medals this weekend.

In the master 1 black belt division, GMA member and leader of Ocean County BJJ, in New Jersey, Tom DeBlass came back from a 2nd place in his weight division to win the open class without allowing a single point to be scored against him in four matches.

The master 1 black belt had some very well known names making the top of their divisions, like Milton Bastos (light-feather), Ed Ramos (light), Marcus Antelante (middle), Alan Nascimento (medium-heavy), Bruno Bastos (ultra-heavy).

The master 2 black belt division saw Eduardo Telles repeat DeBlass and come back after a 2nd place in his weight division to win the open class. Telles, a 2013 medium-heavyweight world champion in the adult division, beat John Piper in the absolute final.

Scherner at the master 3 open class podium

The master 3 black belt division saw a double gold champion in Fabiano Scherner, who won the ultra-heavy division and the open class. The absolute final put Scherner against no other than Roberto Godoi.

In the master 4 black belt division Robert Martinez also came back from a 2nd place in his weight division to win the open class in great fashion.

The master 5 black belt division saw Eugenio Estrada win double gold in the heavyweight and the open class.

Finally, in the master 6 division, Stephen Kamphuis also won double gold in the superheavy division and the open class.

“We had one match at weight before closing out, and then we had two more in the absolute. Now, I’m guaranteed at Abu Dhabi. I’m going to fight in the No-Gi World Pro and I’ll stick around for the Gi one too. I’ll do battle in both styles,” says Bastos.

“I’ll be at the Pan. The whole Nova União crew will stay at the same hotel. Gustavo Dantas, Robson Moura, Shaoin and I will take our students. Two weeks later there’ll be the World Pro, so I don’t know if I’ll enter the absolute. It depends, I’ll speak with my physical conditioning coach and the guys on the team to decide,” says Bruno, who has a special reason for wanting to make it onto the winners’ stand:

“March 27 is my birthday and I want to win!” he warns.

In the meantime, the black belt carries on with his toil as a teacher and looks forward to further positive results in that field.

“I’m happy about how my students did at the San Diego tryouts. One of my girl blue belts, Kelly, qualified for the main event, and others did well too, earning medals,” he says in closing.

No entanto, o faixa-preta ainda entra em ação no Pan de Jiu-Jitsu, nos dias 24, 25, 26 e 27 de março.

“Estou dentro do Pan. A galera da Nova União vai ficar toda num mesmo hotel. Vão os meus alunos, os do Gustavo Dantas, do Robinho Moura e do Shaolin também. Duas semanas depois tem o World Pro, então não sei se vou no absoluto. Vai depender, converso com o preparador físico e com o pessoal da equipe para definir”, diz Bruno, que tem um motivo especial para subir no pódio do Pan.

“27 de março é meu aniversario e quero ganhar!”, avisa.

Enquanto isso, o faixa-preta segue os trabalhos como professor e também aguarda mais resultados neste quesito.

“Fiquei feliz pelos meus alunos na seletiva em San Diego. Classifiquei uma aluna na azul para o evento principal, a Kelly , e outros foram muito bem, com medalhas”, encerra.

The first day of the San Diego tryouts for the World Pro brought electrifying battles at Point Loma High School gymnasium. Among the day’s standouts, André Galvão made a stellar return to Gi competition, securing a spot in the absolute final, where he will face Antonio Braga Neto, and in the under-83 kg semifinals.

In the open weight division, Galvão won his first match by 12 to 0. Also-Atos athlete Bruno Frazatto defeated Bruno Bastos on the same side of the bracket and stepped aside to let André through to the semifinal, where he would face Marcus Bochecha (CheckMat). In a riveting match, Galvão escaped a dangerous back attack, took the lead on advantage points and won after going straight to the mount (7 to 0). Now through to the final, the black belt will face Antonio Braga Neto, who won one match in the open weight class and didn’t need to face Luis Gustavo nor João Assis (both from CheckMat), who cleared the way for him.

But a number of matches in the absolute deserve mention, like Gilbert Durinho’s win over Lucas Leite via takedown, Bochecha’s triumph over Claudio Calasans in a hard-fought affair (4 to 4), and João Assis’s win over Durinho by a sweep.

O primeiro dia de disputas na seletiva de San Diego para o World Pro trouxe combates eletrizantes no ginásio da Point Loma High School. Entre os principais destaques do dia, André Galvão voltou com tudo às competições de pano, tendo se garantido na final do absoluto, em que enfrenta Antonio Braga Neto, e nas semifinais do peso 83kg.

Na categoria aberta, Galvão venceu a primeira por 12 a 0. Bruno Frazatto, também da Atos, derrotou Bruno Bastos no mesmo lado da chave e abriu para André partir rumo à semifinal, onde enfrentaria Marcus Bochecha (CheckMat). Num combate de primeira, Galvão escapou de um perigoso ataque às suas costas, abriu vantagens e chegou à vitória depois de passar direto para a montada (7 a 0). Com vaga na final, o faixa-preta encara Antonio Braga Neto, que venceu um combate no aberto e não precisou lutar com Luis Gustavo e João Assis (ambos da CheckMat), que abriram.

Mas muitas lutas merecem destaque na categoria aberta, como a vitória de Gilbert Durinho sobre Lucas Leite com uma queda, o triunfo de Bochecha sobre Claudio Calasans numa luta duríssima (4 a 4) e a vitória de João Assis com uma raspagem sobre Durinho.
