A próxima edição do SUG está marcada para o dia 8 de novembro, novamente em Floripa, Santa Catarina, no sul do Brasil. “As inscrições serão feitas pelo site do SUG World Tour ou diretamente pela Smoothcomp, procurando pelo SUG Brasil”, avisa o professor GMI Rafael Dallinha, um dos organizadores do show. “Até o final de agosto ou início de setembro vamos divulgar todas as informações sobre categorias, inscrições e valores. A previsão é abrir as inscrições no início de setembro, trabalhando com diferentes lotes, quanto antes o atleta se inscrever, melhor será o valor.”

“Um dos principais diferenciais do SUG são as nossas próprias regras, principalmente no No-Gi adulto”, explica Dallinha. “É um formato mais agressivo, voltado para a finalização, permitindo técnicas que em muitos outros campeonatos não são permitidas. Outro diferencial é a liberdade que damos ao atleta para se desafiar. Se um faixa-branca quiser competir em uma categoria de nível mais alto, por exemplo, ele pode. Na primeira edição em Florianópolis tivemos um faixa-branca vencendo uma categoria de faixa-roxa e um faixa-marrom vencendo uma categoria de faixa-preta. Além disso, os campeões dos absolutos recebem cinturões do SUG, trazendo uma identidade própria para o evento. Queremos que o SUG seja mais do que apenas mais um campeonato no calendário. Estamos construindo um formato que possa conectar nossas seletivas a eventos profissionais e criar novas oportunidades para os atletas.”

Na entrevista a seguir, Dallinha revela conta a história de mais de dez anos do SUG, revela o segredo para o sucesso da entidade criada por Chael Sonnen e lista todos os motivos para você se inscrever e participar do show!

GRACIEMAG: Como surgiu o SUG (Submission Under Ground), evento capitaneado pelo veterano do UFC Chael Sonnen?
RAFAEL DALLINHA: O SUG nasceu de uma ideia do Chael Sonnen e de uma sócia que ele tinha na época. A primeira edição aconteceu em 17 de julho de 2016, em Portland, Oregon, com Vinny Magalhães e Rony Marques na luta principal. O conceito sempre foi muito interessante: colocar grandes nomes do MMA contra estrelas do Jiu-Jitsu em submission grappling sem kimono, dentro do cage, com regras de submission only e overtime no estilo EBI. Ao longo dos anos passaram pelo SUG nomes como Jon Jones, Dan Henderson, Miesha Tate, Chad Mendes, Gilbert “Durinho” Burns, Gordon Ryan, Craig Jones, Garry Tonon, Paulo Miyao, Felipe Preguiça, Fabiano “Pega-Leve” Scherner e muitos outros.

O SUG então já tem 10 anos de estrada…
Pois é… E ao longo desse tempo, o SUG sempre se empenhou em revelar aquele novo grappler que chegou para ficar. Apresentamos muitos novos ídolos ao mundo. Um grande exemplo foi Mason Fowler, que finalizou Craig Jones e acabou se tornando o maior campeão da história do evento.

E como foi que você passou a unir forças com o SUG?
Minha entrada no evento aconteceu através do Fabiano “Pega-Leve” Scherner, que é um grande amigo meu desde a época em que eu ainda era faixa-branca em Florianópolis. Alguns meses atrás, ele veio até a minha academia em San Diego e passamos alguns dias conversando e trocando experiências sobre nossas academias, business e projetos para o futuro. Foi nessa conversa que ele me falou sobre a ideia de trazer o SUG de volta em um novo formato. O Fabiano já conhecia minha experiência com organização de eventos, principalmente pelo trabalho que comecei em 2009 ao lado do Fernando Paradeda. Tive a oportunidade de trabalhar diretamente com ele durante alguns anos e aprendi muito sobre todos os aspectos da organização e produção de grandes campeonatos. Juntos, realizamos etapas do Abu Dhabi Trials no Havaí, Las Vegas, Miami e San Diego.

Isso é praticamente uma faculdade de empreendedorismo no mundo das lutas…
Exato! Foram anos que me deram muita experiência e know-how sobre o que é necessário para produzir um evento de alto nível. Sabendo dessa experiência, o Fabiano achou que seria importante eu fazer parte do time e ajudar principalmente no desenvolvimento do SUG aqui nos Estados Unidos. Para mim foi uma honra e aceitei na hora. No Brasil, o Ricardo Bortoluzzi lidera a operação com a equipe que ele já possui. Nos Estados Unidos, eu e o Fabiano ficamos mais à frente. Meu papel envolve planejamento, estrutura, parcerias e patrocínios, além de conectar o SUG com pessoas e empresas que conheci ao longo da minha trajetória no Jiu-Jitsu. Agora estamos trabalhando para realizar nosso primeiro evento dessa nova fase nos Estados Unidos, no Oregon, e isso tem um significado especial. É a casa do Chael Sonnen, é a casa do Pega-Leve e é onde praticamente tudo começou para o SUG. Espero que seja um grande sucesso e o começo de mais um capítulo importante na história do evento. Florianópolis também foi uma escolha natural para essa nova fase: eu, Fabiano e Bortoluzzi temos nossas raízes lá. Queríamos começar no Brasil justamente na cidade onde nossa história começou, mas a intenção é, com o tempo, levar o SUG para outros estados e países.

Quais foram os maiores desafios enfrentados na organização da primeira edição e quais foram as principais lições que vocês aprenderam na edição inaugural?
A primeira edição foi bastante desafiadora, principalmente porque eu e o Fabiano estamos há muitos anos nos Estados Unidos e já não conhecíamos tão bem o mercado atual de eventos no Brasil. O Bortoluzzi, por outro lado, conhece muito bem esse cenário e estava sempre tranquilo, enquanto nós dois estávamos aqui preocupados, principalmente porque boa parte das inscrições aconteceu mais perto do evento. Também não tínhamos dimensão de toda a estrutura que o Bortoluzzi já tinha montada no Brasil. Ele tem uma equipe fantástica e extremamente profissional. Quando o evento começou, tudo funcionou muito bem e, no final, superou nossas expectativas. A maior confirmação, porém, veio dentro da área de luta. Tivemos combates muito agressivos, muitas finalizações e atletas se desafiando de verdade. Para nós, isso mostrou que o formato funciona. E aqui é importante dar o crédito ao Fabiano Scherner, porque foi ele quem desenvolveu a base das regras desse novo formato do SUG. Eu participei ajudando em alguns ajustes, mas a criação foi dele. A primeira edição confirmou que ele fez um excelente trabalho e que temos um formato com muito potencial para crescer.

Houve algum momento marcante ou inesperado durante a primeira edição que você gostaria de comparti
Sem dúvida, um dos momentos mais marcantes para mim — e acredito que para o Fabiano e o Bortoluzzi também — foi a luta de uma jovem atleta com paralisia cerebral. Quando chegou a hora da luta dela, todas as outras áreas pararam. O ginásio inteiro praticamente parou para assistir. Ela entrou, competiu contra outra menina e venceu a luta. Foi um daqueles momentos em que o resultado vai muito além de uma medalha ou de um campeonato. Depois, conversando com os pais dela, eles contaram o quanto o Jiu-Jitsu tem ajudado no dia a dia e o quanto transformou a vida dela, trazendo mais felicidade e qualidade de vida. Para mim, aquele momento resumiu muito do porquê fazemos tudo isso. Mostrou que o Jiu-Jitsu é muito mais do que competição. É uma ferramenta capaz de transformar vidas, criar confiança e proporcionar inclusão. Foi um momento que, com certeza, todos nós vamos guardar por muito tempo.

Pensando num futuro mais a longo prazo, qual seria o seu sonho ou meta para o SUG — tanto em termos de alcance quanto de legado para o Jiu-Jitsu?
Pensando a longo prazo, o projeto que eu, Fabiano e Bortoluzzi temos para o SUG é construir várias seletivas, não apenas no Brasil e nos Estados Unidos, mas também em outros países. Já existem algumas conversas acontecendo, mas ainda é cedo para anunciar qualquer coisa. A ideia é que essas seletivas criem um caminho para os melhores atletas chegarem a um grande evento de lutas casadas, com premiação em dinheiro e atletas sendo remunerados. Queremos construir uma plataforma que dê oportunidades, revele novos talentos e que, com o tempo, seja reconhecida mundialmente pela qualidade dos seus eventos. Isso também resgata uma parte importante do DNA do SUG desde o início: descobrir aquele próximo grande grappler, dar a ele a oportunidade de enfrentar os melhores e apresentá-lo ao mundo.

Pega Leve fought two matches in his ultraheavyweight division on Saturday in the gi. He fought Stephen Hall of Alliance in the final and won on points to take gold. “My takedowns worked very well,” he says.

Pega Leve, who lives in Portland, Oregon, enjoys competing at the American Nationals. “I won the Brazilian National Champion six times,” he says, and he considers the American Nationals to be on par with that. This year, Pega Leve also decided to sign up for the Abu Dhabi World Pro Trials in San Diego. He took gold in his No-Gi matches in both his division and the open and came in third in the gi. “I lost to Buchecha,” he says.

The 39-year-old still competes in the adult division and does very well for himself, although he intimates those days may be coming to a close. “It may be my last year in the No-Gi Worlds as an adult,” he laughs, “Those ten-minute rounds are pretty long.”

Pega Leve did not register for the Gi open class at the American Nationals but showed up on Sunday ready to go in the No-Gi tournament. He had one match, against Stephen Hall of Alliance, and won it on points to take gold in his division and then competed in the open, where he took third. He took on Matthew Jubera from Ribeiro JJ in his first match and won, but says, “I came into the tournament with an injury to my bicep. I put so much pressure on my opponent (Jubera), I hurt myself.”

Pega Leve is originally a Brazilian Top Team black belt. He says he received his black belt  in 2002 after only four years of training. “The longest belt I was in was my brown belt,” he says, “I was in it for one year. All my other belts I was in for under a year each because I kept winning everything.”

Eventually, Pega Leve followed the path that many Jiu-Jitsu athletes follow and he got into MMA. Although his record is even at 8-8, he did fight twice in the UFC, against Brandon Vera and Gabriel Gonzaga, and once in the IFL, against Roy Nelson.

These days, Pega Leve is back to business as a Jiu-Jitsu competitor and an instructor at Team Quest in Portland. We will see him next at the No-Gi Worlds.

In the first open class match, Caio Terra of Gracie Fighter faced off with Rodrigo Simoes of Gracie Barra. Caio took the match with a foot lock and moved on in the bracket. Next, Matthew Jubera of Ribeiro JJ took on Fabiano “Pega Leve” Scherner of Team Quest. The big man, “Pega Leve”, won the match on points and moved on as well. Then Marco Sharpei took on Pedro Elias of Caique JJ. Sharpei took the honors in that one. Marcelo “Lapela” Mafra took on Fabiano Monteiro of American Top Team and won, rounding out the semifinals bracket.

At that point, “Pega Leve”, which means “take it easy” in Portuguese, stepped out of the competition, holding an ice bag on his biceps. He came into the tournament with an injury and his match against Matthew Jubera only exacerbated it. “I put so much pressure on my opponent, I hurt myself,” he laughed.

So, with “Pega Leve” out, that left Sharpei with a bye. “Lapela” and Caio got the next matchup. In his ninth  match of the weekend, Caio went past after “Lapela” was left writhing in pain on the mats after his knee popped out.

So it was Caio and Sharpei in the final. The two fought valiantly for 10 minutes, with Sharpei getting the better of Caio by an advantage point. He hooked Caio’s head and spent about eight minutes trying to pass, getting an advantage for his efforts and taking gold in the process.

As the two walked off the mats laughing, Caio was visibly exhausted and Sharpei was holding his forearm talking about how tight and swollen it was from the strong grip he’d had on Caio’s head the whole time. “It was a tough match,” Caio says, “He’s strong and his pressure was really good. He did a good job making me feel uncomfortable.”

Asked whether he felt like he’d “dodged a bullet” not having to face ultraheavyweight Pega Leve, Sharpei laughed and intimated that it was no better having to deal with his smaller opponent, Caio. “I have not fought either of them before,” he says, “Caio moved really well. It was very hard to pass his guard. I had to use my weight to control the match.”

Sharpei says he came to the American Nationals to prepare for the No-Gi Worlds. He’s already got his training camp underway, which includes: Joao Assis, Lucas Leite, Lapela, Yuri Simoes, and others who have really helped him step up his game. He says the American Nationals was a good experience for him and allowed him to test how the camp is working out. “I faced really good competition today, so it was great  preparation for the Worlds. They were all high-level guys.”

Sharpei, who teaches five times a week in the evenings and then trains every day, got his black belt three years ago. He says he’s making good progress. “I’ve had good moments,” he says, “I fought in the gi and did very well early on in the year but then didn’t do so well. Now, it’s turning around again. I like No-Gi. It has more speed and I do well in it.”

Currently, Sharpei is working on his takedowns and his wrestling skills in order to help improve his game. “I have such a good team to help me with this,” he says, “I really want to win the No-Gi Worlds. That’s my goal. I really want it and I’m thankful to the guys in my camp for helping me so much to get there.”

On January 9, websites around the world announced the retirement of Hermes Franca. The Jiu-Jitsu black belt is the Brazilian who furthest in the UFC lightweight division, having challenged for the belt in 2007, against Sean Sherk. At the time, he lost by judges’ decision. In an exclusive GRACIEMAG.com interview, our GMA Hermes discussed the decision to hang up his gloves and examines the career.

Your retirement was widely reported, but you hardly addressed the subject. In the end, why stop?

Yeah, I stopped. It was having a hard time concentrating on getting ready for fights. You have to be 100% focused on training and I was teaching and working on my Jiu-Jitsu academy. It was hard, so I said, you know what, I’ll stop’. And I did. I didn’t put aside the things I like, which is to teach and train athletes. I’m teaching a lot of Jiu-Jitsu classes and life goes on. Just I really did stop fighting.

But you won’t do a farewell fight?

No. I did what had to be done.

Which fight marked you most?

All my fights marked me. I remember when I arrived in the United States with nothing, having to work. I ended up getting an opportunity to fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and then challenged for the title. I think every fight has its role. Of course, the first in the UFC (victory over Rich Crunkilton, at UFC 42) you never forget! It was bliss.

And who was the opponent that marked you most?

Marcus Aurelio marked me, because he was my teacher from blue to brown belt. It was kind of bothersome but that was my most notable fight.

What will you do now that you will no longer fight MMA?

I have a gym in Oregon and the opening will be March 13. I’ll hold a cool seminar and it’s also realy cool the fact that so many people around here are stoked. Matt Lindland has already spoken with me and Chael Sonnen is here, too.  Fabiano “Pega Leve”, a friend of mine, too, so I’m right at home. Good folks here.

But will you be an MMA coach?

For now just Jiu-Jitsu. We have three academies and, in New York (East West Combat Club), after only four months, we already have 60 students. I cannot forget about Jiu-Jitsu.  MMA is difficult to teach, it’s a problem, a lot of headaches to teach the athlete. Jiu-Jitsu is exciting and it’s a sport that will never end.  Guybson Sa, a tough 21-year-old from Fortaleza, is also here helping me.

You said you won’t fight MMA. But what about in the gentle art, will you fight?

Absolutely! The gi is my second skin. I intend to fight at the Pan-American, coming up in April. I competed at the last two No-Gi Worlds and have won medals in the past. I like competition and it makes me keep in shape. In Jiu-Jitsu and submission grappling, I’m in.

Would you like to leave a message to someone?

I want to thank all my fans. I would like to ask that anyone in the battle not give up the sport, never give up. For me nothing was easy. I started washing cars in the U.S. and earning $ 200 a week. To get there, I had to fight. And that goes for anything. I ask everyone to never give up their dreams.
