É a minha carreira.

Foco total no presente.

Na volta ele me telefonou.

The post As lições de Jiu-Jitsu e psicologia do grande mestre João Alberto Barreto first appeared on Graciemag.

In nickname, “Capoeira.” On the ground, high-quality BJJ. That is Elizeu Zaleski dos Santos, 32, who hasn’t lost in the UFC since 2015 and has been furiously chasing the limelight in the under-77kg division.

Last weekend at UFC Wichita, in Kansas, Elizeu Capoeira (21w, 5l) submitted a tough Curtis Millender in round 1 after a beautiful takedown followed by a hand-to-hand choke from the back.

The owner of an exciting striking style, Elizeu is a black-belt BJJ student under Cristiano Marcello, the leader of CM System, from whom he learned some interesting details he often uses in the Octagon. Find out what we learned from the fighter in the interview below.

GRACIEMAG: Curtis Millender was also undefeated since 2015, and yet you made it look easy. What was the plan going in?

ELIZEU CAPOEIRA: Our strategy was to draw his attention on the stand-up side, and as soon as he created an opportunity, some space, I would move to take the fight to the ground, to work with my jiu-jitsu. We practiced a lot of these ground situations, and I am certain my quick-shifting game confused him on the ground. He kind of didn’t know what to do. And that was also part of the strategy — to bring a volume of ground game to force him to try to remap the situation he was in. When an opponent is late to try to perform the defenses, it becomes easier for the guy attacking. And that was how I was able to seek the finish.

There was a detail of you slapping his arm to adjust the choke. Was that a technique you had looked at?

Yes, it’s a transition I learned from my teacher Cristiano Marcello. It’s an adjustment we always make starting from the seatbelt technique, either when the opponent is on all fours or turning with his back on the mat. It’s really a day-to-day position, a very basic one from our training, so it just ended up coming out automatically. It’s worth pointing out that the part of the fight that was on the ground happened close to my corner, so I even got to receive instructions in real time from the team, which helped even more!

What is your plan in the UFC at the moment — to face a top-five fighter?

I’m hoping for a ranked fighter, is all. I’ve requested multiple athletes, to no avail, so the goal right now is to be ready and await the next call. My biggest goal is to make exciting fights and give my best to the audience. My work speaks for itself.

Tell us a little about your journey.

I started out as a kid in capoeira, at 9 — it was my first martial art. I migrated to MMA at 19 and fought for the first time at 21. I began doing BJJ around the same time I started fighting MMA. I didn’t take it too seriously at that time — I was training just for the MMA. Only later did I intensify my focus and start competing in the gi as well.

Is capoeira coupled with BJJ a perfect formula for a fighter, in your opinion?

I feel it is. Capoeira gave me much of the elasticity, flexibility and agility I have today, and a lot of that I can use in BJJ. It becomes easy to practice another sport with the mobility of capoeira as a base. And capoeira also greatly influences my jiu-jitsu game, especially in the matter of versatility, an essential aspect for doing well in BJJ.
The post Interview: Elizeu Capoeira explains the jiu-jitsu detail that gave him the win at UFC Wichita first appeared on Graciemag.

No apelido, “Capoeira”.

The post Entrevista exclusiva: Elizeu Capoeira explica o detalhe de Jiu-Jitsu que valeu a vitória no UFC first appeared on Graciemag.

Marco Aurelio/Arena Jiu-Jitsu

Black-belt Gustavo Batista, 22, seems to have no time to waste. One sign of this came after his triumph at the 2019 European Jiu-Jitsu Championship in January. The Atos star read the questions sent over the phone, reflected and answered beautifully — in just over an hour.

As an athlete, Batista doesn’t waste time either. He was a blue-belt world champion in 2015 — and in 2018 he was already repeating the feat with the black belt around his waist.

In editions of the Euros, he is usually even “luckier”: Gustavo has won every time he fought in Portugal. He got double gold at blue (’15), purple (’16), brown (’17) and now black. He also became one of the youngest fighters to win the Euros’ absolute division — losing by a few months to Rodolfo Vieira, who won in 2012 aged 22 years and four months. But Batista can claim to have beaten Roger Gracie’s mark of 24 years, from 2005.

More recently, at the Los Angeles BJJ Pro, Gustavo succeeded in the heavyweight division as he bested Fellipe Trovo to win a 4,000-dollar check, his engine already revving up for this year’s Pan. Graciemag talked to the Santa Catarina native to try to extract his recipe for becoming a victorious fighter. Here’s what we got out of him.

GRACIEMAG: After the Euros, another title at the BJJ Pro. What did you learn from the competition?

GUSTAVO BATISTA: I always like to keep myself active, competing. I fought in the IBJJF’s Los Angeles BJJ Pro to keep up the pace, but also for the prize money. I managed to work on all that I’ve been practicing — my guard, passes, and also taking down, which is a part of what I’ve been learning here training at Atos.

You are living in San Diego, Calif. You were born in Palhoça, moved to São Paulo, and have ended up in the U.S. Was it a big adventure until cementing yourself as a champion?

I’ve always sought to reach the next level, and in BJJ this evolution requires us not to waste time if we want to evolve as a competitor. I trained in my town until I was a blue-belt, and there I noticed I needed more competition-focused training. That’s when I went to São Paulo, where I evolved a good deal and became a black-belt. Then came the time to take another step in my career, looking for greater professionalization. Difficulties abounded: criticism, financial troubles, bad living conditions, lack of sponsors. But I knew that all of those complications would be temporary. Thank God everything went as planned, life got better, and the titles are coming. It was very much worth it.

What exactly were you looking for moving from NS Brotherhood to Atos? And did you find it?

I was looking for more teamwork, support for my career and the vision of a teacher like André Galvão, who is a very experienced athlete, renowned and an exemplary leader. To sum it up, I was looking for greater professionalization. And I found it, yes.

Who inspires you when you fight?

From my start I was always inspired by Rodolfo Vieira (GFTeam). I also really like the jiu-jitsu of my teacher André Galvão and Lucas Lepri (Alliance) — they are the three guys I would watch most in videos. I think my top game resembles Lucas’s a bit, in fact.

So you had it all mapped out before the Euros’ absolute final…

[Laughs.] Yes. Thanks to that, I knew his game deeply, which helped me.

You beat Lepri 10-0. What was the decisive play?

I actually believe it was the start, when I called him to my guard already managing to perform the sweep. It was a decisive factor in the final; after all, I managed to open a 2-0 score against an experienced, technical guy, and getting on top to boot. It was an important win against a great athlete, but it’s in the past. Now it’s about keeping up the work and thinking about my new objectives.

You have won every European Championship you fought in, from blue to black. Is there a recipe for this?

I don’t know. What I seek is to keep myself training year ‘round. I keep my constancy of training for the whole season, even at the end of the year — after all, the European is in January. A recipe that has been working for me is to recharge my batteries in my hometown in December. I always travel there and count on the help of my old friends for training, and on my mom’s food, which works miracles. [Laughs.] My mind seeks to always evolve and learn new things to improve my jiu-jitsu — I think the recipe to efficient jiu-jitsu is constant evolution. We can’t stop learning.

When we saw you win the 2015 Worlds in Long Beach at blue, your pressure was something to behold. Do you think your style has changed much since?

It has a little. I believe I already had a solid game for the blue belt, because I always sought to extract the most knowledge out of my higher-ranked partners around me.

Tell us a good story from the time you used to train with the Miyaos, who this year also swept the competition at the Euros.

I don’t know whether I have a good story, but I have good memories. There was even one time we trained so much we got sick. [Laughs.] They really train a lot and are very disciplined. I learned lots of things from Paulo and João, two guys who helped me evolve a bunch in those days. They are examples as athletes and people.

Your sweeps and your pressure from the top seem very even. How does one train to achieve that?

I try to challenge myself in my training. For example, if you feel better on top, you have to challenge yourself and play guard. And vice versa. Without fear of having a bad time. It’s important to practice your difficulty because that can and will happen in competition. And there’s an interesting point in this: when the goal of your training is to improve your difficulties, you consequently gain in motivation, because you start training with more desire to solve that problem, correct the flaw.

What does your training look like today?

Training sessions with Prof. Galvão are pretty varied: I do some drills, specific training and plenty of rolls too. The training session always has a different format, and also quite challenging. Three times a week I do very specific physical preparation for BJJ. On average I train four to five hours daily; depends on the day.

What have you learned about competition from Luiza, your girlfriend?

I have learned a lot. Luiza is more experienced than me at black belt and imparts a lot of what she’s been through on the mats, good and bad — all that she’s been through in training and competition. This helps me a lot.

You hit a bit of a wall in World Championships at purple and brown, right? What did you learn there?

Yes, the losses suck, but they helped me keep my thirst of wanting to improve each time until I got the black belt. Since the blue belt, I’ve always trained thinking of evolving to the max, and I learned that the colored belts are important to acquire experiences, good and bad, for the big time. The lesson is that we can’t get shaken up with defeats at the start of our career, because it’s when we reach the black belt that everything really matters.
The post Interview: Gustavo Batista and the consistency to win in Brazilian jiu-jitsu first appeared on Graciemag.

GUSTAVO BATISTA: Gosto sempre de me manter ativo, competindo.

E encontrei, sim.

Você se inspira em quem ao lutar?
Desde o meu início sempre me inspirei no Rodolfo Vieira (GFTeam).

Isso me ajuda bastante.

The post Entrevista exclusiva: Gustavo Batista e a consistência para vencer no Jiu-Jitsu first appeared on Graciemag.

BJJ Stars will feature a number of big fights on Feb. 23 in São Paulo. In one of these, Soul Fighters’s João Gabriel Rocha will be tasked with the mission of beating Marcus Buchecha.

To João, facing Buchecha has already turned into a classic — in 2018 they fought twice, and there were two fights before that, with Buchecha always coming out on top. Which is why, this time around, João is planning on a different approach. Read on to see what he told Graciemag.

GRACIEMAG.com: What are your thoughts on BJJ Stars in general?

JOÃO GABRIEL: The event is wonderful in terms of card and infrastructure. It doesn’t owe anything to any international event — very well organized, and it is very good to have this type of event in Brazil. Nowadays everybody is abroad; the adult black-belts who compete at a high level are no longer in Brazil, so the public in Brazil misses seeing a big event like this one. The main names fight in tournaments like the Worlds, Pan, Euros, as well as the tournaments with superfights, and they are all outside Brazil. BJJ Stars is coming to shake up the Brazilian market, which is getting better. I think, in fact, that people have to show their support by buying tickets or pay-per-view, because it’s a way to support the sport. If the event manages to turn a profit, we’ll have more events of this type.

How did you get invited to BJJ Stars, and what was your reaction upon finding out you would again face Buchecha?

I was in Brazil, and Fepa Lopes contacted me to learn whether I would be available to fight on that date. I was immediately excited for the simple fact of being able to fight in Brazil; I didn’t even know my opponent yet. I miss fighting in Brazil, so I practically said yes just for that alone. Soon after, the talked to me and said it would be Buchecha. I accepted right away, because it’s a fight that interests me greatly, and I jumped on the chance to do two camps consecutively.

You two have been rivals for years and have always fought tough matches. What new thing are you bringing to the table this time?

To be frank, I haven’t changed almost anything to fight Buchecha, but I have a reason for this. Each time we fight each other, the fight gets more even, being decided in the details. The last two, for example, went to the judges. We have fought a few times and he had his arm raised in every one of them, but I’m very focused right now, feeling like I’m getting closer each time, and I know I’m almost there — I will overcome this detail and throw down, do what I know and play the game. He who is able to put his cards on the table first will come out the winner.

What is different about living and training in the U.S., and how has is made you better than before?

People here don’t fall for distractions. We get distracted very easily in our culture. Example: going to the gym on foot. You stop to talk to a friend on the street, shoot the breeze and end up arriving late. You don’t do your warm-up right, or you train less than you should. Here in the U.S., there’s none of that. Everybody is on time and with a desire to do everything just right, to respect the school’s norms. The focus is greater here — you go from training home and then straight back the next day. Everything is improved. The BJJ lifestyle is at a hundred percent, no distractions. It’s not a bad thing to be with the people we like, but here I focus completely on living the sport.

What sort of danger do you see Buchecha conjuring up?

The danger is fighting Buchecha in general. Everybody stresses his standup game, but when he’s pulling, it’s also hard to pass. He’s good in all areas, and it’s very hard to fight an opponent of that stature. He has 11 world titles — four of them by getting past me — so there’s nowhere to run.

What do you predict?

In the past I have both put a strategy in place and not put a strategy in place to face Buchecha, and so far it didn’t work out any of the times. Lately I understood that what I have to do is focus on my game, my preparation. It’s complicated to draw a strategy, visualize a scenario and, during the fight, have to change everything. So, due to the unpredictability, I prefer to do my thing and be prepared for everything during the match.

Confira a entrevista completa abaixo!

Classical and no-gi world champion; first female absolute champion in IBJJF Worlds history; ADCC champion. These are the credentials Michele Nicolini carries as she approaches to fight again in the gi on Feb. 23 in a BJJ Stars superfight.

The event, set to take place at Hebraica Club in São Paulo, has a card filled with brilliant fighters, including her and Bia Basílio. Retired from BJJ’s adult age group but going strong in MMA, 37-year-old Nicolini will be butting heads with a younger opponent who is active in the tournament circuit. But she doesn’t look at this duel as a test. Here are the thoughts she shared in an interview with Graciemag:

GRACIEMAG: After withdrawing from the competitive scene, what is your motivation to test yourself again in BJJ?

MICHELLE NICOLINI: It’s not testing myself, because I think I’ve been well tested; I have many “seals” of quality. I never stopped training in the gi, and it so happened that I really liked BJJ Stars’s proposal — a sensational card — so it will be a pleasure to fight in an event of this level. The motivation comes from the many messages I receive from beloved people who ask me to compete again. I think the time I’ve gone without fighting in the gi has made me want it that much more.

Did you accept right away or did you need to think before signing with BJJ Stars?

Fepa called me, made the invitation, and I found it really cool from the start. I still don’t have a date for my next MMA fight in One FC, where I compete, so why not accept it, right? I talked to my friends and gave him the answer the next day, I think.

What do you think of Bia Basílio as an opponent?

Bianca is quite young, explosive, tough, and she’s at the top. I always follow women’s BJJ and was already watching her fights. I believe we have very different styles, actually, and this promises to make the fight very interesting.

Do you think your stamina in MMA is currently your strong suit?

Every training session, preparation and competition is valid to help you fight. MMA is a separate sport, quite different from BJJ, but they are connected. This helps me with conditioning, helps me have a more bulletproof mind and know that I can go beyond my limits, because training for an MMA fight is indeed very hard.

You won your first Worlds in 2006. What is your secret to staying motivated and in great technical shape to this day?

Discipline! I love training, and that’s the secret. Wanting to learn, seeking to keep up to date in knowledge and conditioning. I’m 37 and I gotta say I train harder than many young girls!

What’s after the BJJ Stars superfight — ADCC? No-Gi Worlds?

I’m going to turn my focus to MMA, but those events with pre-matched fights interest me, as long as they don’t interfere with my camps for any fights. Perhaps another one of these. Perhaps the ADCC in California in September. Only God knows the future.
The post Interview: Michelle Nicolini explains what led her to don the gi again for BJJ Stars first appeared on Graciemag.

O Fepa me ligou, fez o convite e eu achei muito legal desde o início.

The post Entrevista exclusiva: Michelle Nicolini explica o que a motivou a voltar a lutar Jiu-Jitsu no BJJ Stars first appeared on Graciemag.

Dan Rod/Kasai

The main superfight of Kasai Super Series, held last weekend at the Bomb Factory in Dallas, Texas, pit two crack BJJ artists against each other: João Gabriel Rocha and Gordon Ryan.

In the end, the scoreboard showed 1-0 in favor of the American — a point that came through a heel hook attempt — and controversy ensued. The fact is the well-matched fight deserves a do-over, given that Ryan walked away limping from his knee and João Gabriel fought with a loose rib, so both may have been unable to put their A-game on display.

João Gabriel disagreed with the score, alleging he also attacked the foot soon after with an Estima lock. In a conversation with Graciemag.com, he analyzed the duel, which lasted ten minutes plus five minutes’ overtime.

GRACIEMAG: How do you view the fight?

JOÃO GABRIEL ROCHA: I’m not one to talk about refereeing, but it’s kind of hard to swallow this one. Talking only about the fight, it was a good one and I think the crowd enjoyed it. I knew he was a big challenge, that he talks a lot but is skilled, and that I should be focused, giving it my all, because otherwise he could submit me. He is very dangerous and may be the best I’ve ever fought. But I at least drew in that fight.

Did you have problems with the new rule?

Look, I understood that during overtime it would be IBJJF point-scoring; therefore, I should have won, because I passed his guard and the points weren’t given to me. It went like this: I took him down and we wound up landing outside the fight area; then he came back immediately pulling guard. That was when he swept me and I swept back. In the five minutes of overtime, we were already tired, but I felt I had the better stamina. However, he attacked me with a heel hook and managed to win a point. I contested it because the attack wasn’t taking and I didn’t think it was fair to give him the point. But right after, I attacked via Estima lock and they didn’t give me the point. Then, at the end, I threw everything at him and bombarded him with guard passes until I managed to arrive on the side, but I didn’t get the points then either.

What makes this new generation so dangerous?

The truth is there a positions we don’t have the habit of practicing, and these people basically just practice that for five years now. Heel hooks, attacking with the leg crossing, for example, are techniques he specializes in since he began training — and always without the gi. At my camp, I even gave up on asking the other athletes to try to simulate the attacks and heel hooks, because nobody was attacking with the right level of pressure. Unfortunately, jiu-jitsu people don’t know how to attack well with this type of move — unlike Gordon, a guy who’s a specialist.

He has already talked about fighting you again.

I hope it happens. I’m sure we’ll meet again. I mean, I accepted every demand, like making heel hooks legal from any position, whether crossing the knee or not, and the rule of fighting submission-only for the first ten minutes. I had never fought under this type of submission-only rule, whereas he’s already pretty experienced at it. It was an excellent opportunity to train a lot and evolve in less-honed aspects of my game. But I know I’ll meet him again soon, maybe at the ADCC, and there will be lots of different things that can happen.
The post João Gabriel Rocha and the lessons from fighting Gordon Ryan first appeared on Graciemag.
