Um dos torneios mais recentes da fera foi o Atlanta Winter Open de Jiu-Jitsu, realizado nos EUA no início deste mês. Para conquistar o ouro no peso super pesado, Dominyka encarou Caitlin Huggins, e com uma montada dominante e o estrangulamento em seguida garantiu o topo do pódio.

Helton Junior got double gold as well. He won the super-heavyweight division over Leonardo Corrêa (Atos Jiu-Jitsu) and the open over Pedro Henrique Palhares.

Vitor Oliveira of GFTeam took down the middleweight division, and Checkmat’s Gilson Nunes defeated Osvaldo “Queixinho” Moizinho in the lightweight final.

Alliance won the teams competition, trailed by Roberto Traven and Gracie Barra.

Valores em dinheiro foram distribuídos para os campeões absolutos de todas as faixas coloridas, com exceção da faixa-preta masculino, que sem absoluto premiou os vencedores nas categorias de peso.

O primeiro a conquistar o cheque foi João Miyao (Cícero Costha), que bateu o rival de longa data Gianni Grippo (Alliance) na final do peso-pena.

Entre os médios, Otávio Sousa (GB) venceu Marcos Tinoco (Alliance). Já no pesadíssimo foi a vez de João Gabriel Rocha (Soulfighters) superar Mahamed Aly (Lloyd Irvin) para faturar o topo do pódio.

Entre as mulheres, a bicampeã mundial Dominyka Obelenyte faturou o superpesado, sem oponentes na divisão, para em seguida morder o ouro absoluto após vencer Laurah Elizabeth (GFTeam).

The New York BJJ Pro, an event held by the IBJJF featuring cash prizes, took place on the night of November 19 at the Nat Holman Gym (CCNY), in New York. Dominyka Obelenyte stole the show by winning double gold. João Gabriel Rocha defeated Mahamed Aly in the ultra-heavyweight final. Otavio Sousa beat Marcos Tinoco at middleweight. And João Miyao beat Gianni Grippo to nab featherweight gold.

Obelenyte got 1,500 dollars for the absolute. Otavio Sousa, João Gabriel and João Miyao got 4k each. Male runner-ups went home with 1,000 dollars each. Read below the results of the men’s adult black belt divisions, and click here for the New York BJJ Pro’s complete results.

Today has been an interesting day in my Bjj journey: I competed in a tournament I stand against for the lack of equal pay primarily in the black belt division, and won first place in weight and absolute. I needed the competition experience and since I can’t travel much because of school, I decided to do it. Although the end result was a happy one there is still work to be done, the least the ibjjf can do is equalize terms for the absolute by giving women a greater purse. I call upon all my ladies to not get discouraged, with each generation of women, whether they be white or black belts, we see an improvement in not only skill but in division size. It is a rare sight to see women in divisions with one or zero fights in large tournaments these days, and with growing numbers, the push for equal pay cannot be deterred. I encourage you guys to support your women Bjj fighters, watch their matches, understand that their journey is the same as everyone’s: entrenched in hard work and sacrifice. Sitting absolute world champion Dominyka Obelenyte keeps winning IBJJF tournaments. The latest was this Saturday’s Charlotte International Open, in North Carolina.

Obelenyte had no opponent at super-heavyweight and got gold automatically. In the open division she beat Laurah Elizabeth of GFTeam.

The male standout was Alliance’s Fernando Reis, who also won double gold. He beat Gracie Barra’s John Rickel at ultra-heavyweight, and in the open he beat middleweight winner Lucas “Hulk” Barbosa.

João Miyao got the light featherweight title as he beat Paulo Roberto Santana (Alliance);

Alliance was the best-performing team, trailed by Roberto Traven BJJ and Team Royce Gracie.

Black-belt Dominyka Obelenyte surprised many people when she announced she was leaving Marcelinho Garcia’s team. Obelenyte got each of her belts under Marcelinho, and it was under him that she won four world championships — two at her weight class and two in the open division. In spite of all of that, she decided to switch teams, from Alliance-Marcelinho Garcia to  Team Fabio Clemente.

“I’m not going to delve too deep into why I switched,” she told Flograppling, “but there were certain circumstances that arose in my time there, and I kind of saw my time there running its course. Just kind of needing something else that I couldn’t find there, that I happened to find here. In this academy I feel a different level of support and different type of family. Not necessarily so much better, that it made me reconsider everything Marcelo has taught me – no.”

Obelenyte says the split was cordial.

“I have the utmost respect for my former instructor,” she added. “He will always be the person to have given me belts blue through black, I’m always going to respect him, and he’s always going to be a really important vital part in my Jiu-Jitsu journey.”

As to why she picked Team Fabio Clemente, she explained her reasoning: “I just felt it was time to move on for myself. And that’s not to discredit Team Fabio Clemente; these guys have been really amazing to me and they’ve provided me with great training, lots of support; they’ve really opened their doors to me and taken me in as one of their own as soon as I showed interest in becoming part of their team.”

Eram 20h05min na Califórnia quando o gato começou a tentar pegar o rato. No caso, a gata tentando domar a rata. Dominyka Obelenyte, peso superpesado, ficou por cima tentando encontrar a brecha para engolir a peso leve Bia Mesquita. Bia, por sua vez, só queria que sua armadilha funcionasse.

Aos 7min30, funcionou: Bia raspou e jogou a campeã mais pesada de costas no chão. Mas este é o problema com o Jiu-Jitsu de hoje: os grandinhos também são técnicos pacas. E Dominyka tem uma senhora guarda.

Não demorou, assim, para a garota lituana treinada por Marcelo Garcia engatilhar sua ratoeira e raspar de volta, aos 8min. E largar a pressão, para vencer por 1 vantagenzinha, conquistada lá no início.

Dominyka bicampeã mundial, com estilo, boas alavancas e muita pressão. Professor Marcelo Garcia deve estar orgulhoso de sua jovem grande pupila.

First of all, Marcus Buchecha wrote a new chapter in Jiu-Jitsu history by winning an unprecedented fourth black belt open class title. He has now 8 gold medals overall as a black belt and is at a hand’s reach of Roger Gracie’s record of 10 titles.

Dominyka is now the most accomplished non-Brazilian competitor of all times, with four gold medals in the black belt division. Here’s how she did it.

Neste sábado, dia 4 de junho, os melhores faixa-pretas do mundo entraram no tatame para disputar o título maior do Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu: o ouro no absoluto.

Tanto no masculino quanto no feminino, os duelos foram de tirar o fôlego, e o público presente na Pirâmide de Long Beach certamente presenciou um dos Mundiais que entrarão para a história.

Nas difíceis chaves do peso aberto, os atletas que se deram melhor foram Marcus Buchecha(Checkmat), Erberth Santos(Ryan Gracie), Dominyka Obelenyte(Alliance) e Beatriz Mesquita(Gracie Humaitá), que chegaram nas finais que rolam amanhã, dia 5.
