Yesterday, the television network MBC, the biggest in the Arab world and owned by the Saudi royal family, announced that it has come to an agreement with the Desert Force MMA promotion. Desert Force is a Jordan-based event where Jiu-Jitsu black belts Cristiano Marcello and Jorge Michelan, as well as France’s Anthony Rea and others, have fought in the past. The promoters’ aim, though, is to farm talent from the region and launch them in the international MMA market.

“Our objective has been to draw a greater and greater audience to our event, thus channeling expectations onto local Arab heroes of the sport. Our region is in need of more entertainment, and MMA has become more and more popular around here. We couldn’t have hoped for a better partner, as MBC reaches 200 million households in 22 Arabic-speaking nations. That’s a giant media segment,” stated the promoter and Jiu-Jitsu black belt Zaid Mirza, a native of the Brazilian capital of Brasilia based in Jordan.

The next Desert Force event will take place on the 7th of September, just after the month of Ramadan. It will be broadcast on the MBC Action channel, specializing in action movies and radical sports, to an audience of around 58 million people, according to the network. At the channel’s behest, the tournament featuring the Arab fighters and those of Arab descent through to the final phase will pick up again.

One of the participants is Southern Brazilian brown belt Gabriel Tayeh, who will be representing Palestine: “This is great news. The exposure it will give the fighters will be huge. That will draw more sponsors and fans,” said Gabriel, before hopping a plane to Rio de Janeiro to carry on training at X-Gym and Team Nogueira.

O Desert Force é um evento com sede na Jordânia, onde já lutaram os faixas-pretas de Jiu-Jitsu Cristiano Marcello e Jorge Michelan, além do francês Anthony Rea e muitos outros. A meta do show, no entanto, é descobrir talentos da região e lançá-los no mercado internacional de MMA.

“Nosso objetivo tem sido atrair mais e mais público para o nosso evento, e assim canalizar as expectativas em torno dos ídolos árabes locais do esporte. Nossa região necessita de entretenimento, e o MMA mostra-se cada vez mais popular aqui também. Não poderíamos ter uma parcerra melhor, já que a rede MBC alcança 200 milhões de lares nos 22 países de língua árabe, é uma gigante do setor de mídia”, salienta o organizador e faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu Zaid Mirza, um brasiliense radicado na Jordânia.

O próximo Desert Force deve ocorrer no dia 7 de setembro, logo após o mês do Ramadan. Será transmitido pelo canal MBC Action, especializado em filmes de ação e esportes radicais, com uma audiência de cerca de 58 milhões de pessoas segundo a emissora. Por imposição do canal, porém, o torneio de árabes e descendentes que se encontrava nas fases finais vai recomeçar.

Um dos participantes é o gaúcho faixa-marrom Gabriel Tayeh, que luta representando a Palestina: “Essa é uma ótima notícia, a exposição agora será gigante para os lutadores. Isso vai atrair patrocinadores e mais fãs”, disse Gabriel, antes de embarcar para o Rio de Janeiro para incrementar os treinamentos na X-Gym e no Team Nogueira.

Desert Force MMA Championship will hold its third event this Friday, September 30.

The event organized by GMA member Zaid Mirza will be held at the famed Orthodox Club, located in the prestigious Abdoun area, in the heart of Amman, Jordan.

The inaugural Middle East MMA Grand Prix is an ongoing  success for fighters in the region.

The winners of this phase will go through to the December  finals to fight for the Middle Eastern title.

Aside from the ongoing Middle East GP, there are a number of international matchups on the card.  For the upcoming  event, spectators will be able to watch UFC and Strikeforce veteran Sean Salmon (USA) take on Cage Rage champion  Antony Rea (France).

The co-main event of the night will feature Jordanian revelation Hashem Arkhagha squaring off with UAE-based  Mohammed Abu Naim (Palestine).

Depois do sucesso na Seletiva para o World Pro, na Jordânia, e da realização do evento de MMA Desert Force Championship, o faixa-preta Zaid Mirza ainda teve mais motivos para comemorar no fim da temporada 2010.

“Promovi muitos atletas neste final de ano, foram mais de 30, em todas as idades, entre mulheres e homens. Pela primeira vez promovemos faixas-marrons, além de três faixas-roxas e 11 faixas-azuis, fora alunos das outras graduações”, comemora Zaid.

After successfully promoting the World Pro tryouts and the Desert Force Championship MMA event in Jordan, black belt Zaid Mirza had further reason to celebrate the end of the 2010 season.

“I promoted a lot of athletes at the end of this year. More than thirty of them, men and women. It was the first time we promoted anyone to brown belt, and we also promoted three purple and eleven blue belts, aside from the other promotions,” says Zaid in celebration.

O dia 8 de dezembro foi histórico em Amã, na Jordânia, com o Desert Force Fight Championship, com presença ilustre da família real com os príncipes Hachem Bin Hussein e Hussein Mirza.

Por lá esteve o empresário André Bottino, responsável pelo lutador Marcos Marquez, americano de origem mexicana que enfrentou o brasileiro Bruno Carvalho, e conta um pouco dessa experiência:

“A organização foi impecável.Tudo maravilhoso. Fomos tratados como verdadeiros príncipes por pessoas receptivas e alegres. Apesar das diferenças culturais, tudo é muito diferente do que imaginávamos, positivamente”, diz.

Cristiano Marcello lutou muito bem, Francimar Bodão deu um dos maiores nocautes que já vi na vida e o combate entre Bruno Carvalho e Marcos Marquez, o melhor da noite. Bruno venceu, mas os dois lutadores saíram valorizados”, fala.

“Mas, além das lutas e do evento, a experiência foi muito além. Prova de profissionalismo, os lutadores aproveitaram para conhecer um pouco do país, todos unidos, independentemente de serem adversários. Fizemos amigos e vivemos momentos e histórias inesquecíveis. December 8 was an historic day in Amman, Jordan, as the Desert Force Fight Championship debuted there, with members of the royal family princes Hachem Bin Hussein and Hussein Mirza in attendance.

André Bottino, handler of American fighter of Mexican descent Marcos Marquez, was there and wrote in about the experience:

“The event was impeccably organized. Everything was splendid. We were treated like true princes by receptive and happy people. Despite the cultural differences, everything was a lot different from what we imagined, positively,” he says.

“Regarding the fights, a number of them were great, and the event was loaded with finishes. Cristiano Marcelo fought really well, Francimar Bodão landed one of the greatest knockouts I’ve ever seen in my life, and the fight between Bruno Carvalho and Marcos Marquez was the best of the night. Bruno won, but both fighters were given their due props,” he says.

“But the experience went well beyond the fights and the event. Proof of their professionalism, the fighters made the most of the trip to get out and see some of the country together, regardless of whether they fought each other or not. We made friends and had unforgettable moments. Jordan will forever hold a dear place in all our hearts,” said André, who sent in these pictures from the trip in exclusively to GRACIEMAG.com.

A primeira edição do Desert Force Fight Championship em Amam foi um sucesso. Tanto pela qualidade das lutas quanto pela receptividade do público. Além de superar a expectativa de ingressos vendidos, o evento, que teve na área VIP mesas para acomodar um público seleto, destacou-se pela organização.

Todas as 11 lutas do card foram decididas por nocaute ou finalização, o que agradou a todos presentes, inclusive membros da família real como os príncipes Hachem Bin Hussein e Hussein Mirza, este último que fez questão de recepcionar todos os lutadores após o evento.

Dos 11 embates, cinco eram entre lutadores árabes. A ideia é promover estes combates para que em breve possam surgir atletas de nível internacional na região. Destaque para o desafio entre Jiu-Jitsu contra kickboxing, e Jiu-Jitsu contra taekwondo, que lembrou os velhos tempos do vale-tudo. E o Jiu-Jitsu levou clara vantagem (assista a seguir).

No card intenacional, destaques para o brasileiro Cristiano Marcello que enfrentou o duro francês Freddy Thulle, e a luta final entre o também brasileiro Bruno Carvalho e o jovem wrestler americano Marcos Marques. Vitória dos brasileiros por finalização no último round.

The inaugural installment of Desert Force Fight Championship in Amman was a success both in terms of the quality of fights on the card and the reaction from the crowd. Besides the better-than-expected turn-out, the exemplary organization behind the event, with its VIP seating for a select public, stood out.

All eleven fights on the card ended in a knockout or a submission, which pleased those in attendance, including members of the royal family like princes Hachem Bin Hussein and Hussein Mirza, the latter going out of his way to hold a reception for all the fighters after the event.

Of the eleven bouts, five were between Middle Eastern fighters. The idea is to promote these matchups so that soon international-caliber athletes will arise in the region. Catching attention were the Jiu-Jitsu versus kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu versus taekwondo matchups, reminiscent of the early days of MMA. Jiu-Jitsu had a clear advantage (watch below).

The bouts that stood out on the international card were Brazil’s Cristiano Marcello facing off against tough Frenchman Freddy Thulle and the main event between Brazilian stalwart kickboxer Bruno Carvalho and young American wrestler Marcos Marques. Both were won by the Brazilians via submission in the final round.

Organização de MMA que promete agitar o Oriente Médio, mais precisamente a Jordânia, é batizada e tem data remarcada. O Desert Force Championship (DFC) acontece no dia 19 de novembro com cinco lutas internacionais e mais cinco com atletas locais. Devem participar atletas da Jordânia, Emirados Árabes, EUA, Holanda, Austrália, Arábia Saudita, Kuwait, Bahrein, Egito, Síria, Líbano e Palestina.

“Já fazíamos o Capital Challenge, que tem grande identidade com o Jiu-Jitsu. Usaremos essa identidade em eventos futuros da arte suave”, explica nosso GMA Zaid Mirza sobre a mudança no nome da organização de MMA.

“Dsert Force é o nome que decidimos para este evento de MMA, inspirado pela grande maioria do Oriente Médio. O povo do deserto é conhecido por suportar condições difíceis e sacrifícios, assim como os lutadores de MMA. Queremos mostrar ao mundo o poder do povo dessa região”, completa Mirza, que também lança a Liga de Lutas do Oriente Médio (MEFL, em inglês).

A intenção é, no futuro, realizar eventos uma vez por mês e lançar talentos da região para lutar em grandes organizações como UFC, Dream, Strikeforce e o próprio DFC.

“A primeira apresentação terá lugar no Cairo, Egito, em janeiro de 2011. O cage da MEFL vai girar todos os países árabes e do Oriente Médio”, revela Mirza.

An MMA organization promising to shake up the Middle East, more specifically Jordan, has come to be and has a date for its maiden event. Desert Force Championship (DFC) is set for November 19 with five international bouts and another five between local athletes. Athletes from Jordan, the UAE, USA, Holland, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine are expected on the card.

“We already did Capital Challenge, which is greatly identified with Jiu-Jitsu. We will use this identity in future gentle art events,” explains Zaid Mirza about the MMA organization’s name change.

“Desert Force is the name we decided on for this MMA event, inspired by the vast majority of the Middle East. The people of the desert are known for bearing difficult conditions and sacrifices, as are MMA fighters. We want to show the world the power of the people of this region,” adds Mirza, who is also launching Midde East Fight League (MEFL).

The aim is to, in the future, hold events once a month and launch talent from the region into major organizations like the UFC, Dream, Strikeforce and the DFC itself.

“The first show will take place in Cairo, Egypt, in January 2011. The MEFL cage will go around all the Arab countries of the Middle East,” reveals Mirza.
