A representative of Roger Gracie Academy, last month Charles Negromonte added to his collection of titles.

Fighting at King of Mats, the event that kicked off the week of Abu Dhabi World Pro 2018, Negromonte was among the middleweights that fought for the inaugural belt.

To claim the title, Negromonte had to beat some of the strongest athletes in activity. Right off the bat he bested André Galvão, the favorite, by two advantages to nothing. Even losing to Jaime Canuto in the groups stage, Negromonte advanced to the semifinals.

Then he got past Renato Canuto and again faced Jaime Canuto, this time with the belt on the line. With pressure in the final moments, Negromonte got the advantage he needed and clenched the title.

Faixa-preta representante da Roger Gracie Academy, Charles Negromonte faturou mais um grande título para sua carreira no último mês de abril, em Abu Dhabi.

Em ação no King of Mats, evento que abriu a semana do Abu Dhabi World Pro 2018, Negromonte esteve entre os pesos médios que disputaram o cinturão inaugural do torneio.

Para chegar ao título, Negromonte teve que vencer alguns dos melhores atletas da atualidade. Logo na sua primeira luta, Negromonte superou o favorito André Galvão por duas vantagens a zero. Mesmo com o revés para Jaime Canuto, ainda na fase de grupos, Negromonte avançou para a semifinal.

Na fase seguinte, Negromonte passou por Renato Canuto, e voltou a encarar Jaime, seu algoz na fase de grupos, para disputar o cinturão. Com pressão nos momento finais, Negromonte conseguiu a vantagem que precisava para superar Jaime e ficar com a cinta.

The 10^th anniversary edition of the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship kicked off this Tuesday, April 24, with the first installment of a new event designed to put the best grapplers in the world face to face.

The King of Mats debuted in Abu Dhabi with 24 athletes divided in three weight classes. They competed within two groups in a round robin system that provided non-stop action for the crowd present at the Mubadala Arena as well as for viewers all over the world. Here’s how each champion was crowned.

Lightweight

With 10 athletes fighting for the belt, the road for the top of the podium in the lightweight division was the longest of the three weight classes. On Group A, Leonardo Saggioro left no opponent standing on his way to the semifinals. He came out a winner of all four of his matches. He first beat Samuel Canquerino by points, then overcame Hiago George by referees decision in a close match. Saggioro’s third match was another narrow victory over Isaque Paiva before closing the group stage with a fourth win over Jose Lima. Isaque Paiva, with three wins in four matches, also qualified for the semifinals. On Group B, Gianni Grippo, Celso Venícius and Thiago Marques finished the group stage with three wins and one loss. The point count after all the matches put Grippo and Marques in the semifinals as first and second in the bracket.

In a sweep battle, Gianni Grippo made it to the final in a hard-fought semifinal against Isaque Paiva that ended with a 8-6 lead for the American. On the other semifinal, Saggioro was able to make it to the gold medal match with a narrow 1-0 lead on advantages.

The King of Mats lightweight belt knew its first owner following a strategic match between Grippo and Saggioro. Both grapplers were very respectful of each other’s games and the match ended in a 0-0 tie. The referees saw Saggioro as more active and granted him the win.

Middleweight

Group A had three competitors and each one won one match and lost another. The point count put Charles Negromonte in first place followed by Jaime Canuto, leaving Andre Galvão out of the semifinals. On Group B, Renato Canuto won all his three matches, beating Roberto Satoshi 2-0; finishing Clark Gracie and finally beating Tarsis Humphreys by WO. The second place finisher was Roberto Satoshi, who finished Tarsis Humphreys with a triangle and beat Clark Gracie 2-0.

The semifinals put Jaime Canuto to face Satoshi and Charles Negromonte to face Renato Canuto. Jaime built a 6-0 lead over Satoshi with two guard passes to reach the final. Negromonte held on to a 0-0 tie to beat Renato by referees decision.

The gold medal match was decided in the very last seconds, when a near guard pass by Negromonte earned him a 1-0 lead over Jaime Canuto and the right to wear the King of Mats middleweight belt.

Heavyweight

With seven athletes competing for the belt, the division featured a series of thrilling matches. On group A, Alexander Trans won his two matches to reach the semifinals. He beat Tanner Rice 2-0 with a sweep and then Helton Junior with a 2-0 lead on advantages. American Tanner Rice joined Trans in the semifinals with a 1-0 win over Junior on advantages. On Group B, Roberto “Cyborg” sailed through the bracket with three wins in three matches. He beat Andre Campos by referees decision, then outscored Lucio Rodrigues before finishing Alexandre Souza from the mount. With two wins in three matches, Alexandre Souza also made it to the semifinals.

The first semifinal put Trans against Souza and a rib injury early in the match during a takedown defense put Alexandre out of commission and granted Trans a spot in the final. Cyborg made it to the gold medal match with a referees decision win over Tanner Rice following a 0-0 tie.

The heavyweight belt found its way to Alexander Trans hands when the Danish caught Cyborg’s back to sink a bow and arrow choke and get the tap. The first heavyweight King of Mat was crowned.

The 2018 ADWPJJC returns this Wednesday. The black belt division kicks off on Thursday with the country qualifiers, followed by the main brackets on Friday and the finals on Saturday. Stay tuned for more action.

A edição comemorativa do 10° aniversário do Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship teve seu pontapé inicial nessa terça-feira, dia 24 de abril, com a estreia de um novo evento no qual os melhores atletas do mundo ficaram frente a frente.

O “King of Mats” contou com 24 atletas divididos em três categorias de peso. Eles se enfrentaram em dois grupos, nos quais os dois melhores de cada grupo avançam para as semifinais. Foram disputas de ação incessante para o público presente no Mubadala Arena, assim como para os espectadores que acompanharam pelo undo todo via internet. Confira abaixo como correu cada divisão:

Leves

Com dez atletas lutando pelo cinturão, o caminho até o título na divisão de leves foi o mais extenso das três divisões. No grupo A, Leonardo “Cascão” Saggioro não deixou nenhum adversário no seu caminho até as semifinais. Ele saiu com a vitória em suas quatro lutas. Primeiro, ele bateu Samuel Canquerino por pontos, para em seguida superar Hiago George na decisão dos jurados em luta parelha. Em sua terceira luta, Cascão conquistou outra vitória apertada, contra Isaque Paiva, antes de vencer José Carlos “Cocó” na quarta disputa. Isaque Paiva, por sua vez, contabilizou três sucessos em quatro lutas, e assim avançou.

No grupo B, Gianni Grippo, Celsinho Venicius e Thiago Marques fecharam a fase de grupos com três vitórias e uma derrota. O desempate ficou na contagem dos pontos, que colocaram Gripppo e Marques na outra semifinal. Em um duelo de raspagens, Grippo conquistou seu lugar na final em uma dura batalha contra Isaque Paiva, que terminou em 8 a 6 nos pontos. Na outra semi, Cascão marcou 1 a 0 nas vantagens sobre Marques para brigar pelo ouro.

Para definir o campeão, Cascão e Grippo lutaram com muita cautela, e o placara ficou empatado em 0 a 0, com a decisão final dos jurados indicando o título para Leonardo “Cascão” Saggioro.

Médios

No grupo A, os três competidores alcançaram a marca de uma vitória e uma derrota. Na contagem geral dos pontos, Charles Negromonte e Jaime Canuto avançaram para a final, deixando André Galvão de fora da segunda fase. No grupo B, Renato Canuto venceu três lutas para avançar. Primeiro bateu Roberto Satoshi por 2 a 0, depois finalizou Clark Gracie e em seguida venceu Tarsis Humphreys por WO. Outro a avançar no grupo foi Roberto Satoshi, que finalizou Tarsis no triângulo e depois bateu Clark por 2 a 0 nos potnso.

Na primeira semifinal, entre Jaime Canuto e Satoshi, Canuto marcou 6 a 0 nos pontos com duas passagens de guarda e assim avançou. Na outra semi, Negromonte e Renato Canuto empataram em 0 a 0, com decisão favorável a Negromento que chegou à final. Na disputa de cinturão, Negromonte quase passou a guarda de Jaime nos últimos segundos, para faturar a vantagem que valeu o título.

Pesados

Com sete atletas na luta pelo cinturão, a divisão de pesados protagonizou lutas eletrizantes. No grupo A, Alexander Trans venceu suas duas lutas e avançou para as semifinais. Primeiro ele venceu Tanner Rice por 2 a 0 nos pontos com uma raspagem, e em seguida superou Helton Junior por 2 a 0 nas vantagens. Já Rice se juntou a Trans nas semis após vencer Helton por 1 a 0 nas vantagens. No grupo B, Roberto Cyborg venceu suas três lutas e partiu com tudo para as semifinais, após superar André Campos na decisão dos árbitros, superar Lucio Lagarto nos pontos e finalizar Alexandre Souza da montada. Com duas vitórias em três lutas, Alexandre Souza também avançou às semis.

A primeira semifinal colocou Trans contra Alexandre Souza. Uma lesão nas costelas, após uma queda, colocou Trans direto na final. Cyborg, por sua vez, garantiu a vaga na finalíssima após empatar com Rice em 0 a 0 e vencer na decisão dos árbitros. O cinturão peso pesado, enfim, chegou às mãos de Trans após este pegar as costas de Cyborg e aplicar um letal estrangulamento.

A ação nesta semana agitada de Abu Dhabo World Pro está apenas começando. Os faixas-pretas entram em ação na quinta-feira, nas qualificatórias por países, com as chaves definitivas na sexta-feira e finais no sábado.

Charles Negromonte at the London Open

Day 2 of the London Fall Open was mostly devoted to no-gi divisions at the Cristal Palace National Sports Centre, this Sunday.

Gracie Barra’s Charles Negromonte repeated his performance from Saturday and added two more gold medals to his weekend record.

In the medium-heavy division, he beat Santeri Lilius for the title and in the open class he defeated Alan Oliveira in the final.

No primeiro dia de torneio, de pano, Negromonte bateu Luca Anacoreta (Aeterna JJ) no peso aberto, tendo antes vencido Darragh O Conaill (Ribeiro JJ) pelo ouro no peso médio.

Sem esmaecer, Charles partiu para a disputa sem kimono no domingo, e venceu Santeri Lilius (Roger Gracie JJ) pelo ouro meio-pesado, e depois estrangulou Alan Ferreira pelo título do absoluto. (Clique na imagem abaixo e assista).

Day 1 of the IBJJF London Fall Open went down this Saturday at the Cristal Palace National Sports Centre.

Gracie Barra’s Charles Negromonte and Gretchen Zoeller were the standouts for winning the adult black belt open class divisions.

Negromonte beat Luca Anacoretta for the gold medal in the absolute while Zoeller defeated Serena Gabrielli for her gold medal.

Negromonte also won the middleweight division with a win over Darragh O’Connail.

No último domingo, Fernando Tererê voltou a competir um grande evento em Lisboa, e mostrou que ainda tem muito a ensinar. O faixa-preta do morro do Cantagalo ficou com a medalha de prata no peso médio, após ser desclassificado por cruzar a perna de fora para dentro sobre o joelho de Claudio Calasans. Nada que abalasse a festa que a torcida já fazia.

O Campeonato Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu rola entre os dias 24 a 27 de janeiro, em Lisboa, e vários astros já garantiram seu lugar no Complexo Municipal Esportivo do Casal Vistoso, como Rominho Barral, Rodrigo Cavaca, Augusto Tanquinho, Igor Silva, Fernando Tererê e Luanna Alzuguir.

E há os novatos que também querem brilhar e atrapalhar os favoritos.

Um deles é o peso médio pernambucano Charles Negromonte, aluno de Zé Radiola.

“Estou muito bem preparado, comecei a treinar mais forte no início de dezembro e parei somente no Natal e Ano Novo. Minha preparação para campeonatos é voltada para os ajustes, porque quanto ajustado você luta, mis você economiza no gás e força. O Zé Radiola sempre me mostrou isso”, diz Charles, que viajou para a Inglaterra para dar os últimos treinos com Bráulio Estima (GB Birmingham).

“Acredito que o grande nome do peso médio seja o Claudio Calasans, porque ele sempre está nas cabeças, mas não me preocupo com isso. Quero fazer somente o meu. Sou novo na faixa-preta, a responsabilidade é deles, eu gosto é de lutar. Estou com muita vontade de me testar nos campeonatos mais importantes – e o primeiro deles é o Europeu”, conclui.

The European Jiu-Jitsu Championship is nearly upon us. Coming up Jan. 24-27 in Lisbon, Portugal, a number of stars have already added their names to the lineup, including Romulo Barral, Rodrigo Cavaca, Augusto Tanquinho, Igor Silva, Fernando Tererê and Luanna Alzuguir.

And there’s also a healthy share of young up-and-comers looking to make things rough on the favorites.

One such talent is Charles Negromonte, a middleweight student of Zé Radiola’s from Pernambuco State, Brazil.

“I’m really well prepared. I started training in early December and only stopped for Christmas and New Year’s. My preparations for championships are geared toward fine-tuning, because when your style is fine-tuned you save energy and strength. Zé Radiola always showed that to me,” Charles told GRACIEMAG.com before flying out to England to train with Bráulio Estima at GB Birmingham.

“I feel the big name at middleweight is going to be Claudio Calasans because he’s always placing at the top, but I’m not going to worry about it. I want to do my thing. I’m new at black belt, so he’s the one with the responsibility; I just want to fight. I’m feeling quite at ease to test myself at the big tourneys—and the first of them is the Europeans,” he said in closing.

O fim de semana do 6º Open Fortaleza foi rico em bom Jiu-Jitsu, no Ceará. As áreas de luta da FJJOCE estavam um tapete, e os lutadores agradeceram o cenário, protagonizando conferes de alto nível.

Na faixa-preta quem saiu coroado foi o pernambucano William Martins (Gracie Barra), que venceu o mais pesado Rafael Kong (Evolution) por desclassificação, após Kong cruzar a perna por cima do joelho do adversário. O lutador da GB levou o título do absoluto e mais 3.500 reais. Além de William e Kong, completaram o pódio a dupla da Gracie Barra Charles Negromonte e Bruno Ramos.

Bruno também competiu no master e levou o aberto, após vencer Osmar Fontes (Ribeiro JJ) por 5 a 0, na final.

Já o nome da marrom foi a fera em ascensão Rodrigo Mendes (Gracie Barra PE), que estreou a nova faixa vencendo o absoluto. Na final, o pupilo de Zé Radiola obrigou o sempre técnico Alvaro Fontes (SAS) a bater, com uma chave de braço.

Já na faixa-roxa, duas grandes revelações da arte suave nordestina travaram uma batalha emocionante. Diego Ramalho (Gracie Barra PE) e Yan Pica-Pau (Gracie Barra Ceará) empataram em 2 a 2, e Diego venceu ao marcar 3 a 1 nas vantagens.
