Curtiu?

When an opponent has balled up on all fours, you have but two options: either stick your hand in and grab the collar for a clock choke or stick in your hooks and take his back. Right?

Not quite! You’ve still got some other alternatives.

Today GRACIEMAG.com brings you a slick double finish direct from Las Vegas, taught by our GMA Ricardo Cavalcanti, head sensei at Carlson Gracie Las Vegas.

Pay attention to how the Jiu-Jitsu professor fakes a clock choke with his hand.

If the opponent shuts your first hook out, don’t worry: position your foot as Ricardo does and turn while pulling on the collar from behind, which also traps the arm.

All that’s left for the opponent to do is shout out or tap out any way he can. How’d you like that?

Cavalcanti’s son Rômulo and wife Frances were in the mix.

Rômulo received his brown belt and the Frances got her blue belt.

Other than that, two times world no-gi champion Taylor Leonard is now a purple belt.

Cavalcanti also gave a new belt to his granddaughter, Anna Braqndon, now a grey and white 5 year old fighter.

The party was complete with some Brazilian barbeqeue and the visit of Santa Jiu-Jitsu Noel, as Cavalcanti called the jolly old man.

The Professor was very proud of his team:’Last time we promoted 100 students, this time 158 and next time will be 200 for sure.”

“At every seminar I teach, I learn as well. Everyone has something new to show. And Grandmaster Carlson Gracie has certainly been accompanying me at those seminars, because the thing he liked most was to see everyone training,” said the Jiu-Jitsu professor, today teaching us how to get an opponent out of mount.

Note how he grabs his own wrist as though to defend his arms. Next he raises his hip and puts a hook in at the opposite leg.

He thus sticks his opponent’s foot in his half-guard (as explained at minute 1:32), and then latches on to the leg, raises his legs and, with a seesaw motion, reverses the position and takes the back.

Always train under a qualified instructor’s supervision.
