Adilson Higa, a black belt from Campo Grande, Brazil, suffered a serious accident two years ago that put him in a coma and cost him his arm. But becoming an amputee didn’t diminish his desire to compete in Jiu-Jitsu.

The teacher was featured on Brazilian television program Globo Esporte, where he told of how the hardship he faced early on was in dealing with grips.

“Necessity brought me to developing a number of positions, like one where I pull my opponent’s head downwards to get him to walk. When he walks, I go in with a classic De La Riva guard position,” the teacher explained to Globo.

The effort panned out. Higa has won a number of medals and trophies since the accident, which left him in coma for around a month.

“You only really do things well when you’re happy, and I’m happy in this new stage in my life. The job is well done, well directed and well supervised.”

The next challenge in the master’s sights is the Brazilian Nationals, which takes place this weekend in Rio de Janeiro. Higa says he is not competing out of obligation, but rather sees it as a personal challenge.

“I proved everything I had to prove. The important part is going out there and stepping on the mat. That will be a victory to me,” he says, providing an example of overcoming hardship and motivation to his students. O faixa-preta Adilson Higa, de Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, sofreu um acidente sério há dois anos, quando ficou em coma e perdeu o braço. Mas a amputação não tirou sua vontade de lutar Jiu-Jitsu.

Personagem de reportagem no Globo Esporte local, o professor contou que a grande dificuldade no início era fazer as pegadas.

“A necessidade me fez desenvolver algumas posições, como uma em que eu puxo o adversário para baixo para fazer ele andar. Quando ele anda, eu já entrou com a posição clássica de guarda De La Riva”, explicou o professor à Globo.

O esforço deu certo. Higa conquistou várias medalhas e um troféu depois do acidente, que o deixou cerca de um mês em coma.

“A gente só consegue fazer as coisas bem feitas quando se está feliz, e eu estou feliz com essa nova fase. O trabalho está sendo bem feito, bem direcionado e bem supervisionado”.

O próximo desafio do mestre é o Campeonato Brasileiro, que acontece no Rio de Janeiro, neste fim de semana. Higa diz que não vai competir na obrigação, mas encara como um desafio pessoal.

“Provei tudo que tinha que provar. O mais importante é chegar lá e pisar no tatame. Essa vai ser minha vitória”, diz ele, exemplo de superação e motivação para seus alunos. Confira abaixo um de seus treinos, e apareça no Tijuca para aplaudi-lo, no fim de semana.

WOCS brought excitement galore along with its eleventh installment to Campo Grande, Brazil, featuring a welterweight GP and six superfights.

In the first stage of the GP, muay thai specialists Luis Beição and Tico Pedroso had a tough first round, but Beição was in advantage from the get-go, landing a takedown in the first round. The Nova União then went on to secure a second takedown and mounted position, taking the unanimous decision once the two rounds of the first GP fight were up.

At the other end of the bracket, Mauro Xuxa showed his Jiu-Jitsu was up to speed, finishing with an armbar from the guard after just 1:29 minutes in the first round of his fight with André Chatuba.

In the GP decider Beição was dominant against Xuxa, landing stinging kicks to the thigh, takedowns, and working well on the ground. In the break between the second and third rounds Xuxa puller out for the confrontation due to a broken hand.

Good Jiu-Jitsu was on display in some of the other fights. Willian Viana put away Luiz da Silva with an armbar after having secured a takedown and mounted position. The submission hold arose at 4:15 minutes of the first round. Willian’s teammate Fábio Larvinha sunk an armbar agaisnt José also in the first round.

In a strike-filled affair, Wand Lopes beat Clayton Alves via desistance. Now Marcio Ceará brought an end to a lively bout with Ivan Freitas via rear naked choke. Sergio Freitas was doing well in the striking department, but it was with an americana lock that he won his bought with Bruno Schwartz. Lastly, Nilson Pulgatti used takedowns and a strong grond game to win a unanimous decision over Davi Sutil, in an evenly-matched affair.

O WOCS trouxe emoção à Campo Grande em sua 11ª edição, com o GP 77kg. Além disso, mais seis combates agitaram o público nesta sexta-feira.

Na primeira fase do GP, os especialistas em muay thai Luis Beição e Tico Pedroso fizeram um primeiro round duro, mas Beição já levou vantagem na primeira parcial, com uma queda. Na sequência, o representante da Nova União conseguiu quedar e montar para garantir a vitória por decisão unânime.

No outro lado da chave, Mauro Xuxa mostrou que também está com o Jiu-Jitsu afiado. Com um armlock da guarda, finalizou o faixa-preta de luta livre André Chatuba, em apenas 1min29s.

Na decisão do GP, Beição foi superior a Xuxa, com bons chutes na cocha, quedas e bom trabalho no chão. No intervalo do segundo para o terceiro assalto, Xuxa teve que desistir, com uma das mãos quebradas.

Outras lutas trouxeram bom Jiu-Jitsu. Willian Viana tratou de finalizar Luiz da Silva com um armlock, depois de quedar e montar. O golpe foi aos 4min15s do round inicial. Companheiro de equipe de Willian, Fábio Larvinha também usou o armlock contra José. Assim com Willian, a finalização foi no primeiro round.

Numa luta de muita trocação, Wand Lopes bateu Clayton Alves por desistência. Já Marcio Ceará aplicou um mata-leão em combate bem movimentado contra Ivan Freitas. Sergio Freitas trocou muitos socos, mas, na segunda parcial, finalizou Bruno Swarts com uma chave americana. Por fim, Nilson Pulgatti usou as quedas e o jogo de chão para derrotar o trocados Davi Sutil, por decisão unânime, mas a luta foi bastante parelha.

Chatuba and Xuxa set to face off

The matchups for the welterweight GP tourney at WOCS 11 have been made. The event is set to take place today (Friday) in Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul.

Luis “Beição” Ramos faces Tico Pedroso and Mauro Xuxa takes on André Chatuba. Furthermore, there are six superfights to liven up the card at the event promoted by Tatá Duarte and Phillip Lima.

“I feel we’ve had great results here in Mato Grosso do Sul. Globo and Bandeirantes television networks, local radio stations…. The event is being highly publicized and we expect a full house today, with great fights,” remarks Tatá.

Following the Campo Grande show, WOCS has two more GPs coming up. On May 7, in Juiz de for a, Brazil, they will hold an under-66kg GP, and on the 13th it will be Brasília’s turn, with an under-83kg one.

In Brazil to compete at the Rio International Open, Hillary Williams ended up sidelined by misfortune. The Westside JJ black belt was injured while training for the event. A wrist lock was the culprit, causing a fracture, but her stay in the country is not in vain.

“I’m going to do three seminars: in Mogi das Cruzes, Cuiabá and Campo Grande. Unfortunately, I’m not going to compete this time, but I’ll be there to root for my friends,” she told GRACIEMAG.com, showing off her pink cast.

Nevertheless, despite the injury, she hasn’t put off training.

“I’m training, even though I’ll have the cast for three months,” she said in finishing.
