No último fim semana, foi realizada em Niterói mais uma seletiva do WPJJC, para eleger os craques que vão a Abu Dhabi com tudo pago. Além de Rodolfo Vieira (até 92kg) e Gabi Garcia (acima de 63kg), que tiveram um caminho relativamente fácil, o grande destaque do torneio realizado no Caio Martins foi Antonio Braga Neto, manauara da escola Gordo Jiu-Jitsu.

Após ser quarto lugar no acirrado GP dos Pesados da Copa Pódio, Braga Neto aproveitou o embalo e foi campeão da categoria acima de 92kg, onde venceu combates complicados sem levar sufoco.

Para o faixa-preta isso ocorre muito porque os oponentes não conseguem decifrar seu jogo, o que paralisa a tática inimiga.

“Nem eu mesmo sei o que vou fazer antes da luta. O que eu quero é finalizar”, diz Neto, que bateu um papo com o GRACIEMAG.com. Confira!

GRACIEMAG: Você venceu caras como Ricardo Evangelista e Igor Silva. Qual foi seu diferencial para vencer em Niterói?

BRAGA NETO: Para mim, a vontade foi o diferencial. Eu queria muito ser campeão, e precisava disso para mim mesmo. Hoje eu tenho uma confiança muito grande no meu jogo, que é um jogo indefinido. Nem eu mesmo sei o que vou fazer exatamente na luta. O que eu quero é finalizar, não importa como. Acho que isso faz parte, tento impor meu jogo e o pessoal acaba se perdendo um pouco. O que mais me deixou feliz foi meu jogo de guarda. Em pouquíssimos momentos me senti desconfortável, mesmo com a galera mais forte por cima.

Na sua visão, como foi a final com o Igor?

Foi uma luta duríssima. Quando eu raspei, caímos na 50/50 e a luta ficou um pouco travada. Mas foi embola até o final, a luta foi bem legal. Aprendi a grande lição de acreditar sempre, ter perseverança e coração é algo fundamental para um lutador.

Como foram os treinos para a seletiva?

Na verdade eu comecei meus treinos muito antes de retomar os treinos de Jiu-Jitsu, pois tive de fazer a reabilitação no joelho e não foi fácil. Foram sete meses de fisioterapia, onde tive todas as condições de me recuperar totalmente após a cirurgia de ligamento cruzado no joelho. Agora voltei com a perna boa.

Last weekend in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro State, tryouts for the WPJJC were held to see who’ll be flying to Abu Dhabi with all their costs covered. Besides Rodolfo Vieira (under-92 kg) and Gabi Garcia (over-63 kg), who had it relatively easy, the big standout of the tournament was Antonio Braga Neto, a native of the North Brazilian city of Manaus and a product of Gordo Jiu-Jitsu team.

After taking fourth place amid the most stalwart of competition at the Copa Pódio Heavyweight GP, Braga Neto made the most of his momentum to win the over-92 kg division, where he encountered and overcame stiff opposition without much ado.

To the black belt the ease he encountered last weekend came down to his opponents not being able to decipher his game, annulling the enemy tactics.

“Even I don’t know what I’m going to do in the match. What I want is to get the tapout,” Neto tells GRACIEMAG.com in the following interview. Check out what he has to say.

GRACIEMAG: You beat guys like Ricardo Evangelista and Igor Silva. What made the difference for you in Niterói?

BRAGA NETO: To me what made the difference was desire. I really wanted and needed to win it. Now I’m a lot more confident in my game, which is an undefined game. Not even I know what exactly I’m going to do in a match. What I want is the finish, it doesn’t matter how. I think that’s part of it—I try imposing my game and the opponent gets kind of lost. What I was happiest about was my guard game. There were very few moments where I felt uncomfortable, even with the guys coming on strong on top.

How do you feel the final with Igor went?

It was a really tough match. When I swept him, we landed in 50/50 and kind of stalled. But we were scrambling up until the very end. It was a really good match. The lesson I learned is that always believing, persevering and having heart is essential to a fighter.

How did training for the tryouts go?

Truth is, I started training long before getting back to Jiu-Jitsu training, because I had to rehab my knee, and that was no easy task. I did seven months of physiotherapy, where I had everything I needed to make a complete recovery after an operation on my ACL. Now I’m back and my leg’s fine.

Day one of the Abu Dhabi WPJJC Trials in Rio de Janeiro has yielded the finalists who this Sunday will battle for gold and the coveted all-expenses-paid trip to the United Arab Emirates.

At the Caio Martins Gymnasium in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro State, aces like Rodolfo Vieira, Theodoro Canal, Braga Neto, Paulo Miyao and others took to the mats in competition.

O primeiro dia da seletiva do WPPJC de Abu Dhabi, no Rio, definiu seus semifinalistas que amanhã brigam pela medalha de ouro e a tão sonhada passagem para os Emirados Árabes.

O ginásio do Caio Martins, em Niterói, foi o palco para Rodolfo Vieira, Theodoro Canal, Braga Neto, Paulo Miyao, entre outras feras. As disputas foram bastante acirradas.

Se para você o sábado é dia de folga, para os craques do Jiu-Jitsu, especialmente os do Rio, hoje é dia de suar o kimono para conquistar a passagem aérea para o WPJJC de Abu Dhabi.

A seletiva do Rio de Janeiro ocorre no ginásio do Caio Martins, em Niterói, hoje e domingo. Neste sábado, já serão definidos os lutadores até as quartas-de-final. Domingo a briga esquenta até as finais.

Feras da arte suave como Rodolfo Vieira, Theodoro Canal, Antonio Braga Neto e Alan Finfou estão inscritos na briga para ir aos Emirados. Já o faixa-marrom Paulo Miyao, já classificado em outra seletiva no Brasil, quer lutar para se testar.

One of the most hotly disputed qualifiers for the April main event in Abu Dhabi, the Rio de Janeiro, Brazil leg of the WPJJC Trials will be held Jan. 19 and 20 at Caio Martins Gymnasium in the city of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro State.

The tournament is sure to go off, as world champions Rodolfo Vieira and Gabi Garcia are set to hit the mats there.

Another big name confirmed for combat is Herbert Burns, brother to Gilbert “Durinho”, who is traveling Europe and will return home raring to win an all-expenses-paid trip to the United Arab Emirates.

What do you expect at the Trials in Niterói?

I expect the best. I always go in it to win it, and this time will be no different. With six-minute matches the action becomes more dynamic, much more explosive, but that’s how I fight. Anyone who wants to win has to stay ahead on the scoreboard the whole time.

How’s your training been going, with this tour of Europe and all?

I arrive in Brazil on the 10th because I’ve got a series of seminars to teach in Sweden. Truth is, here I’ve been training more MMA and No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu, but as soon as I return I’m going to tune up my gi game with my teacher Casquinha at Top Brother and Oriente academies in Niteroi. Here in Sweden I managed to keep in shape, and I even competed at and won a grappling tournament. Check out one of the matches.

You’re coming off a blemishless campaign at the 2012 Brazilian National No-Gi Championship. Do you consider yourself to be a firm favorite to win at the Trials?

I never enter a competition for competing’s sake; if I don’t think I have what it takes to win I don’t even sign up. I feel this business of there being favorites only exists before the match begins. I’m going to give it my all and gun for my objective, which is to make it to top spot on the podium. I always work on everything and try to be prepared for any situation I might encounter, so my game is always free-flowing and attacking, with lots of movement. I’m going to fight like I always do—going for the finish, which is Jiu-Jitsu’s essence.

The main WPJJC event only comes around in April, in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. But the mood surrounding the event will already heat up in January, when yet another leg of tryouts for all-expenses-paid travel to the UAE is held in Brazil.

The Rio trials, always one with the deepest talent pool, is set for January 19 and 20 at Ginásio Caio Martins in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro State.

O evento principal do WPJJC é somente em abril, em Abu Dhabi, a capital dos Emirados Árabes. O clima porém vai esquentar bastante em janeiro, quando rola mais uma seletiva no Brasil para eleger quem viaja com tudo pago para a terra dos príncipes.

A seletiva do Rio, uma das mais disputadas sempre, está marcada para 19 e 20 de janeiro, em Niterói, no clássico ginásio Caio Martins.

Grandes nomes do Jiu-Jitsu mundial estão confirmados, como os pesos pesados Rodolfo Vieira (GFTeam) e Gabi Garcia (Alliance). E você também pode se inscrever a partir de hoje, é só clicar aqui.
