No último sábado, 29 de agosto, o Open Fortaleza reuniu mais de 700 atletas no ginásio do Sesc Centro, na capital do Ceará.

O ponto alto das disputas foi a presença do lutador do UFC Caio Magalhães, que voltou a vestir o kimono para competir.

Atleta da Nova União, Caio fez bonito e venceu uma luta por 22 a 0. Depois, na final, o cearense fechou o pesadíssimo com Carlos Eduardo, companheiro de equipe.

This weekend begins the worldwide race to secure all-expenses-paid trips to compete in Abu Dhabi, as the first  WPJJC tryout event is about to kick off in Natal this Saturday.

The event, promoted in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte by our GMA Fabio Holanda, is produced by the same group that will be running the upcoming trials in Amazonas State, Brazil, and Montreal, Canada.

And this first tryout already looks promising. Set to gather at the Nélio Dias gymnasium in Natal City are aces the likes of Leandro Lo, Léo Leite, João Gabriel, Kitner Rocha, Nivaldo Oliveira, Tarcisio Jardim, Isaque Paiva and Paulo Miyao, among others already signed up for the competition.

From the Brazilian Northeast, the region where the event is being held, the names looking to set the mats alight are Bruno Novaes, Caião Alencar, Helio Mourão, Hugo Britto, William Martins, Cassio Jacaré, Junior Show, Herico Hesley, Bruno Ramos, Thiago Barreto and others.

O fim de semana foi mais que perfeito para o líder da academia Kimura em Natal, Jair Lourenço. O potiguar comemorou as vitórias de seus pupilos no Shooto Brasil 26, que rolou no Clube Hebraica sábado.

Primeiro, Jussier Formiga finalizou Maicon William com um mata-leão no segundo round e manteve o cinturão até 56kg da organização. Depois, Caio Alencar também usou o Jiu-Jitsu para definir o duelo contra Wagner Câmara. O faixa-preta fez o básico, derrubou, passou a guarda, montou, bateu e quando o oponente virou as costas encaixou o mata-leão para encerrar sua estreia no MMA.

“Foi uma benção. Os dois mandaram muito bem e fizeram certinho o plano de jogo, conforme tínhamos traçado. Caião, apesar de ser um estreante, já tinha um rítmo muito forte de competições e como eu havia dito a vocês não sentiu tanto aquela adrenalina da estreia, e com isso conseguiu fazer o que não era segredo para ninguém – derrubar e buscar a finalização, o que ele fez logo de cara”, disse Jair.

“Já com o Jussier fizemos uma estratégia de trocar mais em pé no primeiro roud, derrubando só no final. No segundo o plano era partir logo para derrubar e tentar finalizar o combate e graças a Deus foi o que ele fez”, comentou Jair, que embarca hoje para a Inglaterra. O treinador acompanha Renan Barão, que luta no próximo sábado contra o inglês Brad Pickett, nas lutas preliminares do UFC 138.

“As expectativas são as melhores possíveis, o Barão se dedicou muito aos treinos e vejo que ele está ficando cada vez mais forte e completo, com a cara do UFC. Acho que uma das coisas mais importantes que um atleta tem de ter é o foco no treinamento e ser regrado. Sem um bom descanso, boa alimentação e suplementação não dá para lutar 100%. Conversei bastante com o Dedé e com o Marlon, eles também estão muito confiantes numa boa atuação do Barão no UFC 138. A parte do Renan é treinar muito e se regrar bastante, e isso tenho certeza que ele fez certinho, agora está nas mãos de Deus. Só Ele sabe o resultado”, diz.

Para fechar o fim de semana, Jair sentiu uma emoção maior do que sente com os triunfos dos pupilos. Precisamente às 8h da manhã do sábado, nasceu Vithor Lourenço, segundo filho do faixa-preta. E a nova ferinha da Kimura já veio ao mundo com gana de buscar seu espaço. “Meu filho nasceu antes do previsto, assim como sua irmã Giovana Lourenço, que nasceu antes de completar 8 meses. O garoto nasceu com quase 3,5kg e 49cm de muita saúde, e posso garantir, com muita energia. Vai dar trabalho pro pessoal aí”, encerrou.

Last weekend was more than perfect for the leader of Natal, Brazil-based team Kimura, Jair Lourenço, with all his students winning their respective commitments at Shooto Brazil 26 this Saturday.

First, Jussier Formiga submitted Maicon William with a rear-naked choke in the second round and hung on to his flyweight belt. Then, Caio Alencar too used his Jiu-Jitsu to decisive effect against Wagner Câmara. The black belt did the basics, got the takedown, passed guard, mounted, rained down strikes, and when his opponent turned his back, sunk a rear-naked choke on his MMA debut.

“It was a blessing. The two did great and did everything according to the game plan we’d put together. Caião, although a first-timer, was already at a good rhythm from competition and, like I’d said before, he didn’t get all that adrenaline from making his debut, and thus he managed to do what everyone knows you have to – get the takedown and go for the submission, which he did right away,” said Jair.

“Now the strategy we had for Jussier was to stand and strike in the first round, only going for the takedown in the end. Our backup plan was to go straight for the takedown and try and finish the fight, and thank God that’s what he did,” remarked Jair, who today takes off for England, where he will corner his understudy Renan Barão against Brad Pickett next Saturday at UFC 138.

“I expect the best. Barão really dedicated himself in training and I can see him just becoming stronger and stronger and more well rounded, with the look of a UFC fighter. I feel the most important thing an athlete can do is be focused in training and live a regimented life. Without proper rest, nourishment and supplementation a fighter can’t be 100%. I had a good talk with Dedé and Marlon; they too are really confident Barão will have a great performance at UFC 138. Renan’s job is to train a lot and live a controlled life, and I’m certain he did everything just right. Now it’s in God’s hands. Only He knows what the outcome will be,” he said.

To wrap up the weekend, Jair felt an emotion even greater than his students’ triumphs. At precisely 8am Saturday morning, Vithor Lourenço, the black belt’s second child, was born. “My son was born premature, just like his sister Giovana Lourenço, who was born before eight months in the pregnancy were up. The boy was born weighing almost 3.5 kg and 29 cm long, is plenty healthy, and full of energy. He’s going to be a handful,” he said in closing.

Jair Lourenço, líder da Kimura de Natal, está confiante no triunfo de seus pupilos no Shooto Brasil 26.

Neste sábado, no Clube Hebraica, em Laranjeiras, zona sul do Rio, o levinho Jussier Formiga (10v, 1d) e o estreante meio-pesado Caio Alencar defendem a bandeira da escuderia potiguar contra Maicon William e Wagner Câmara, respectivamente.

“O Maicon é um cara duro e conhece bem o jogo do Jussier, mas desde a última vez que eles lutaram até hoje o Jussier evoluiu bastante, principalmente na trocação e no wrestling. Como, aliás, pudemos comprovar em sua última atuação nos Estados Unidos, no TPF 10, em agosto. Por isso a melhor tática será impor o seu jogo em pé e no chão, trocando, derrubando e procurando oportunidades para finalizar ou nocautear”, disse o treinador ao GRACIEMAG.com.

Jair acompanha as feras no evento de André Pederneiras e acredita que a experiência de pano conta muito a favor do estreante Caio Alencar.

“O Caião já foi campeão de Jiu-Jitsu na faixa-preta e este ano vem num ritmo forte de competições, tendo sido campeão absoluto no Norte-Nordeste, além de terceiro colocado em Abu Dhabi, no World Pro, categoria até 92kg. Acredito que ele está bem fisicamente e apesar de ser um estreante tem uma boa bagagem de competições. Isso vai ajudá-lo a controlar melhor aquela adrenalina de estreia no MMA”, completou.

Jair Lourenço, the leader of Natal, Brazil’s team Kimura, is confident his students will triumph at Shooto Brazil 26.

This Saturday at the Clube Hebraica club in Rio de Janeiro, flyweight Jussier Formiga (10w, 1l) and debuting light heavyweight Caio Alencar will defend their academy’s coat of arms against Maicon William and Wagner Câmara, respectively.

“Maicon is a tough guy and knows Jussier’s game but Jussier has evolved a lot since the first time they fought, mainly in his striking and wrestling. This was clear at his last performance, lat August at TPF 10 in the USA. That’s why our strategy will be to push the pace standing and on the ground, striking, getting takedowns and looking for chances to get the tapout or knockout,” Lourenço told GRACIEMAG.com.

Jair will be accompanying his fighters to the André Pederneiras-produced event, and believes his experience in the gi will work in the debuting Caio Alencar’s favor.

“Caio is already a Jiu-Jitsu champion as a black belt and has been keeping a strong pace in competition this year, having won the Norte-Nordeste absolute division, taken third in the under-92 kg division at the Abu Dhabi World Pro. I feel he’s physically well and has solid experience from competing, despite it being his first MMA fight. It will help him when it comes to controlling the adrenaline of his MMA debut,” he said in finishing.

Leandro Lo was one of the standouts from day one at the World Pro tryouts in Natal, Brazil, this Saturday. The Cícero Costha student made it through to two of the Sunday finals. Besides his usual under-74kg, where he will be disputing the all-expenses-paid trip to the Abu Dhabi World Pro, he also made it to the final of the absolute division, worth 2,000 dollars for the winner.

In doing so, the black belt had to beat three opponents at weight and two at open weight. In the under-74kg semifinal Leandro overcame Amazonas native Fabiano Silva by two sweeps, a guard pass and a knee on belly. At the other end of the bracket, Bruno Ramos (Nine Nine) is the other finalist, also having overcome three opponents. In the absolute, Lo will be facing André Simões.

At under-65kg, Jussier Formiga (Kimura), one of the top flyweights in the world MMA rankings, beat four opponents, including the stalwart Isaque Paiva. Formiga, Formiga, who usually competes in the roosterweight division, came up with some big submissions along the way. His opponent in the decider will be Thiago Barreto, a savvy guard player.

Bruno Alves (Gracie Barra) is a force to be reckoned with in the under-84kg division. The Zé Radiola student had four matches, including a hard-fought semifinal against Manoel Fernandes (GFTeam) that he won on points. In the final, Bruno will have to contend with GFTeam’s Adeildo José, who beat five opponents in making it there.

Alliance representative Fabiano Boi was the big finisher on the day. Wielding a deadly kneebar, Boi finished four of his matches, each in under two minutes, with hold. At the other end of the bracket is Caio Magalhães, with his consistent game.

The over-92kg divisional final is plenty promising, as Antonio Carlos “Cara de Sapato” takes on Caio Alencar, the winner of the event in 2010. They won three matches apiece in making it to the decider.

In the female division, Luiza Monteiro (CheckMat) overcame two opponents and will now take on Fernanda Mazelli. One weight group down, CheckMat’s Marina Ribeiro will face off with Bruna Ribeiro of Atos.

Leandro Lo foi um dos destaques no primeiro dia de disputas na Seletiva do World Pro, em Natal, neste sábado. O aluno de Cícero Costha está garantido em duas das finais, que acontecem neste domingo. Além da categoria 74kg, em que disputa a passagem e estadia para o World Pro, em Abu Dhabi, Lo está também na decisão do absoluto, que vale 2 mil dólares.

Para isso, o faixa-preta teve de bater três oponentes no peso e dois no absoluto. Na semifinal da categoria 74kg, Leandrinho derrotou o amazonense Fabiano Silva com duas raspagens, uma passagem de guarda e um joelho na barriga. Do outro lado da chave, o classificado é Bruno Ramos (Nine Nine), que também bateu três oponentes. No absoluto, Lo encara André Simões.

No peso 65kg, Jussier Formiga (Kimura), um dos melhores do mundo no MMA entre os moscas, bateu quatro oponentes, entre eles o duro Isaque Paiva. Formiga, que geralmente luta no peso galo, também conseguiu boas finalizações pelo caminho. Seu adversário na decisão vai ser Thiago Barreto, dono de uma guarda enjoada.

Bruno Alves (Gracie Barra) segue com força no peso 84kg. O pupilo de Zé Radiola fez quatro combates, entre eles a dura semifinal contra Manoel Fernandes (GFTeam), vencida nos pontos. Na final, Bruno vai ter pela frente outra fera da GFTeam, Adeildo José, que bateu cinco oponentes.

Representantes da Alliance, Fabiano Boi foi o finalizador do dia. Dono de uma perigosa chave de joelho, usou o golpe em quatro combates, todos nos primeiros dois minutos. Do outro lado da chave veio com força Caio Magalhães, que sempre mostra um jogo consistente.

No peso acima de 92kg, a final promete entre Antonio Carlos, o Cara de Sapato, e Caio Alencar, vencedor do mesmo evento em 2010. Cada um precisou fazer três lutas para chegar à decisão.

No feminino, Luiza Monteiro (CheckMat) superou duas adversárias e encara Fernanda Mazelli. No peso abaixo, a decisão vai ser entre Marina Ribeiro (CheckMat) e Bruna Ribeiro (Atos).

The race taking hundreds of Jiu-Jitsu competitors to Abu Dhabi for the World Pro is underway. This Friday five hundred athletes made their way to event organizer Fabio Holanda’s academy in Natal, Brazil, to weigh in for the first of the tryouts for the event. The qualifying tournament begins this Saturday and the finals and entire absolute contest will be held on Sunday. Fabio Holanda also organizes the qualifiers in the Brazilian state of Amazonas and in Montreal, Canada.

A number of stalwart competitors will be sporting a gi to try their luck, including UFC fighter Ronny Markes. Besides the athletes from the Brazilian northeast, like winner of the 2010 installment of the event Antonio Carlos “Cara de Sapato” and Caio Alencar, there will be those flying up from the Southeast and down from the North, as well, like Manaus native Marcos Alexandre “Capitão”, who last Wednesday won his fight at MMA event Amazon Forest, and São Paulo native Isaque Paiva and a number of others.

Já começou a corrida que vai levar centenas de lutadores de Jiu-Jitsu de diversas partes do mundo a Abu Dhabi, para o World Pro. Nesta sexta-feira, a academia do organizador Fabio Holanda, em Natal, no Nordeste do Brasil, recebeu quinhentos atletas para a pesagem da primeira seletiva mundial do evento. As disputas começam neste sábado e as finais e todos os absolutos são no domingo. Fabio Holanda também organiza as seletivas do Amazonas e Montreal, no Canadá.

Muitas feras estão inscritas, entre elas o lutador do UFC Ronny Markes, que vai vestir o kimono. Além de lutadores da Região Nordeste, como os campeões do evento em 2010 Antonio Carlos Cara de Sapato e Caio Alencar, feras do Sudeste e do Norte também compareceram, entre elas o manauara Marcos Alexandre Capitão, que venceu um combate de MMA no Amazon Forest, na última quarta-feira, e o paulista Isaque Paiva, entre outros.

The GRACIEMAG.com team was on its toes at the World Pro tryouts in the Northeastern Brazilian town of Natal. Over there, they witnessed up close Caio Alencar, a Kimura Nova União athlete, who qualified for the over 92 kg division finishing off four opponents.

“Training is still going on strong under the supervision of coach Jair Lourenço and physical conditioning coach Adriano Curinga. They are the ones taking care of my training over there. The main focus is Jiu-Jitsu, which I practice from Monday to Saturday. But I also do physical conditioning three times a week,” the fighters tells GRACIEMAG.com.

Training in the northeast is going strong, but Caio is also planning a trip to visit Atos, with the Mendes brothers.

“I have more that sixty black belts to train with here, so I can prepare well here in Natal. But I have some trips to the academies of friends in João Pessoa, Recife, and Maceió planned. I’m going to pay a visit to the Mendes brothers, in Rio Claro, before the trip, since I’m so well received there. We’re all friends,” he says.

He expects the World Pro to be challenging, and of course, Caio is confident he will have some surprises in store for his opponents.

“I really want to face the top guys, like Gabriel Vella, Rômulo Barral, and Rodolfo Vieira, among others I know who are out there. I’m going to try and win at weight and open weight at the World Pro,” he says in closing.
