O professor, formado na Gracie Barra e hoje professor na Renzo Gracie Academy, em NY, conversou com nossos parceiros da Gallerr, após conquistar o ouro no master 2 peso pesado. Ele falou sobre suas aventuras nas competições após migrar para as luvas, explicou a diferença entre competir de adulto e master, e fez uma comparação entre os atletas de ponta do MMA com os adultos no Jiu-Jitsu.

Personagem da principal atração da noite, Carlos Eduardo “Cachorrão” possui uma vasta experiência internacional e volta a se apresentar em terras brasileiras após três lutas nos Estados Unidos. Apesar de ter sido derrotado nos dois últimos compromissos, o cearense possui um cartel bastante consistente com 14 vitórias e quatro derrotas. Mesmo com a grande quantidade de resultados positivos, é uma derrota que mais chama atenção na trajetória do meio-pesado. Em abril de 2008, ele enfrentou o então desconhecido Jon Jones no BCX 4 – Battle Cage Xtreme 4, torneio disputado em Nova Jersey (EUA). Após travar uma dura batalha nos dois primeiros rounds, o brasileiro acabou nocauteado no início do terceiro round. Muita coisa mudou desde então. Se à época, Jonas tinha 21 anos e fazia sua segunda luta profissional, hoje ele ostenta uma invencibilidade de cinco anos e, mesmo com os problemas particulares enfrentados nos últimos meses, defendeu o cinturão do UFC em oito oportunidades.

Outro protagonista do 1º Round, Khetag Pliev, o Lion, teve uma trajetória bastante diferente de Cachorrão até chegar aqui. Ex-wrestler olímpico – disputou os Jogos Olímpicos de 2012, em Londres (ING) representando o Canadá -, ele construiu sua carreira no wrestling nos Estados Unidos e no Canadá. Oriundo da Ossétia, região que pertence à Rússia, ele possui diversas vitórias e títulos imponentes. Em um desses resultados expressivos, o europeu derrotou Chris Weidman, que hoje detém o cinturão dos médios (84kg) do UFC. Após conhecer os irmãos Rodrigo Minotauro e Rogério Minotouro, Khetag estreitou seus laços com o Brasil e decidiu começar a sua trajetória no MMA profissional dentro do país. Sua estreia aconteceu em setembro deste ano, em Salvador (BA). Na ocasião, o lutador venceu Cristiano Silva por finalização no primeiro round.

Ex-atleta do UFC e professor de Frankie Edgar, Ricardo “Cachorrão” Almeida voltou a pisar nos tatames este ano, e em grande estilo.

Professor de Jiu-Jitsu e nosso GMA em Nova Jersey, onde ensina há quase uma década, Cachorrão sagrou-se campeão absoluto no Pan Sem Kimono 2012, na categoria sênior 1, contra Fernando Zulick.

No campeonato, realizado em setembro em Nova York, Cachorrão venceu ainda o peso meio-pesado, ao vencer Tobias Owen. Relembre a final do absoluto e aprenda com ele.

A former UFC fighter and coach to Frankie Edgar, Ricardo “Cachorrão” Almeida returned to the mats of competition this year–and did so in grand style.

The Jiu-Jitsu Professor and GMA of ours in New Jersey, USA, where he has been teaching for the last decade, took top honors in the 2012 No-Gi Pan senior 1 absolute division upon beating Fernando Zulick.

At that tournament last September in New York, Cachorrão would also win the medium heavyweight division, beating Tobias Owen. Refresh your memory of the absolute final, and see what you can learn from him.

The 2012 World No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Championship will take place November 3-4 in Long Beach, California, and Gracie Barra is calling up its platoon of competition-partaking students for a special training camp.

The preparation period will be held from October 24 to November 1, and it will be overseen my Ricardo “Cachorrão” Almeida, a former UFC fighter and a competitor from the early ADCCs.

Competitors from three-stripe white belts up can take part in the activities, as can athletes not planning to compete at the IBJJF tournament. The sign-up fee is 125 dollars for those who sign up by the 17th.

Acompanhado do irmão Flávio, Cachorrão participou do evento Sea Paddle pela segunda vez, uma iniciativa criada para aumentar a conscientização sobre o autismo e levantar fundos para o combate da doença.

Para participar, cada remador teve que angariar mil dólares.

Os irmãos levaram pouco mais de seis horas para completar as mais de 26 milhas.

Cachorrão escreveu sobre a experiência: “Alguns dias você precisa cavar mais fundo em sua alma para achar a sua verdadeira essência. Por sorte hoje eu tive meu irmão ao meu lado  e muitos no meu corner”.

The leader of GMA member school Ricardo Almeida BJJ took part in the Sea Paddle event for the second time, an initiative in New York City created to raise money and awareness about autism and environmental issues.

To be a part of it, each participant had to raise at least US$ 1,000.

Ricardo and his brother Flavio Almeida completed the course in over six hours.

Cachorrão wrote about the experience: “Some days you just have to dig deep into your soul to find out what you are truly made of and what you are all about. Luckily today I had my brother Flavio Almeida by my side and many of you on my corner.”

“Back in 2008 I decided to return to MMA. Since then I have had the privilege of fighting eight times in the UFC. As a competitor I can think of no bigger thrill than to stand in the center of the octagon with my hands raised.

During these almost four years it has been a personal struggle to find balance between my fighting career, caring for my son who was diagnosed with autism soon after I signed a six-fight deal with the UFC, teaching at my growing Jiu-Jitsu Academy and the family duties we all have.

MMA is a great sport but also physically and mentally unforgiving. It is a dangerous task to step in the octagon, specially if your focus is not at 100%.

After much deliberation since my fight at UFC 128 I have decided to step away from the sport as a fighter.

I will continue to fully support the UFC as a coach and of course as a big fan. I would like to thank Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White for their leadership and vision which brought the sport to new heights. I would also like to thank Joe Silva for giving me the opportunity to compete among the best martial artists in the world.

Renzo Gracie, Mark Henry, Frankie Edgar and all my teammates who I could not have gone through this challenge without.

Finally I would like to thank my wife, children and family as well as my students. You will have my integral dedication from here on.

UFC star and our GMA in New Jersey Ricardo “Cacchorrão” Almeida escaped a horrific car accident unscathed, when his Land Cruiser was totaled after colliding with a FedEx truck.

Via his twitter account, @rabjj, the star celebrated his being alive. As a toast to his good health, GRACIEMAG.com recalls some of our Cachorrão’s great performances in MMA, during his days at Japan’s Pancrase promotion.
