The learning of BJJ depends on repetition. That which is not repeated will be inevitably forgotten. Therefore, in this first course review, we will take a second look at what we studied in the first five modules:

1) Attacks from the closed guard

2) Defensive guard

3) Attacks from side control

4) Side control escapes

5) Attacks from the back

Among the techniques taught is this armlock shown by Renzo for you to apply when your opponent is inside your closed guard with their arm flexed, trying to escape the traditional armbar.

Regarding attacks from side control, Leo Tunico likes to trap his opponent’s arm with the lapel and evolve into an armbar — a position that got a lot of praise in week three and which you will do well to revisit.

Black belt Bruno Fernandes, leader of Gracie Barra Montreal, will be teaching two BJJ and surf all-week seminars in El Salvador.

The events go down on March 5-12 and March 12-19.

There was a limited number of participants leaving some divisions empty but only because the top talent shown were combined in other weights.

Mark Ramos of Ricardo “Rey” Diogo BJJ faced Bruno Braz of Kimura BJJ in the first round and won via bow and arrow choke.

Gustavo Carpio of Marra Senki defeated Washington Lima of GF Team by 6-0 in points.

Mark Ramos defeated Daniel Beleza of SAS Team by referee decision.

In the final, Gustavo Carpio and Mark Ramos engaged in a technical sweep battle with Carpio using his spider guard to get on top. Mark would reciprocated with his own creative means whether it be from x-guard or going inverted to take the back. The end score was 6-6 but the advantages were 4-0 in Carpio’s favor as he went for multiple omoplatas.

Bricklin Welch of Redzovic International defeated Diogo Almeida of Renzo Gracie by straight ankle lock.

Gianni Grippo of Alliance Marcelo Garcia defeated Rafael Costa of Renzo Gracie by bow and arrow choke.

Renan Borges of BTT defeated Bricklin Welch by lapel choke from side control.

In the final, Gianni Grippo and Renan Borges played a stalemate game with Gianni in guard and Renan working to pass. Gianni used spider and the lasso and worked to take the back as well while Renan worked an over-under type pass and tried to stuff Gianni’s bottom leg repeatedly. The decision was in favor of Gianni for the gold.

MIDDLE

Bruno Fernandes of Gracie Barra Montreal defeated Alex Aristides of Serra BJJ Academy by lapel choke from side control.

Rafael Barbosa was in the bracket but did not fight and so Vinicius Silva of Team Link received a bye to the final.

In the final, Bruno worked his guard and his passing against Vinicius who recovered a few times. The match ended with 10-0 in points in Bruno’s favor earning him the gold.

MEDIUM-HEAVYWEIGHT

Gregor Gracie did not compete so the bracket went straight to the final.

In the final, Abmar Barbosa of Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu and Jarod Lawton of New England United BJJ switched off playing bottom and passing. Abmar worked his guard and attempted an armbar but Jarod evaded the submission. Then Abmar swept into mount and Jarod recovered. The match ended after Abmar swept from his guard. The match ended 8-0 in points for Abmar Barbosa.

HEAVYWEIGHT

The only two athletes were Antonio Antonioli of Atos Jiu-Jitsu and Leandro Soares Martins of Martins Jiu-Jitsu Team so it went straight to the final.

In the final, Antonio jumped guard and while Leandro worked to pass, Antonio broke the posture with a grip on Leandro’s belt and attacked the arm. Using his fundamentals Antonio was able to submit with the armbar for the gold.

The open weight has yet to begin but here is a photo album of the matches:

Realizado nesse sábado, dia 16 de novembro, o Montreal Open de Jiu-Jitsu trouxe aos fãs da arte suave no Canadá uma bela exibição de força, resistência e de apurada técnica no Jiu-Jitsu.

Astro do dia, Bruno Fernandes, professor da Gracie Barra Montreal que afia o chão do campeão do UFC Georges St-Pierre, conseguiu chegar ao topo do pódio nas duas chaves que correu, no peso médio e no absoluto.

GMA member Bruno Fernandes, leader of Gracie Barra Montreal, was the name of the event at the 2013 Montreal Open, this Saturday.

The professor won the male adult black belt featherweight division and also the open class.

In the teams competition, the results were:

Don’t be late in registering for the 2013 IBJJF Pan Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship this year and let the east coasters win all the titles. The roster is filling up quickly and is likely to reach capacity before the deadline on September 16!

The event will be on Saturday, September 28 at the City College of New York Nat Holman Gymnasium: 138th Street, Convent Avenue New York, NY 10031

Make sure you register for the event before making your travel arrangements so you’re not stuck going to New York just to watch because the athlete list filled up. Although it wouldn’t be a bad vacation, the competition is one you do not want to miss.

In past years the mats of the Pan No-Gi have seen a high level of black belts such as Lucas Lepri, JT Torres, Renan Borges, Samir Chantre, Osvaldo Queixinho, Laercio Fernandes, Henrique Rezende, Pablo Popovitch, Roberto Tussa Alencar, Davi Ramos, Kayron Gracie, Daniel Tavares and many more. That list is comprised of 2012 and 2011 alone.

This year the black belts confirmed so far: Bernardo Faria, AJ Agazarm, Bruno Fernandes, Joseph Capizzi as well as athletes from GMA academies such as Renzo Gracie, Alliance NYC, Alliance Ecuador, Marcelo Garcia, Gracie Barra Long Island, Toronto BJJ, Soca BJJ, Gracie Barra Montral, Gracie Barra New Mexico.

Let’s make the Pan No-Gi an earned title with a well-rounded amount of entries from all over to represent the spread of the gentle art.

Our GMA member and friend Bruno Fernandes runs Gracie Barra Montreal and has accomplished such achievements on and off the mat that makes his resume hard to top.

With a Ph.D. and residency training in Opthalmology, he left his position of Assistant Professor at McGill University to teach Jiu-Jitsu full-time. Among his Jiu-Jitsu results, he is a four-time world champion.

This weekend he took to the competition mats once again at the 2013 Australian Nationals in the black belt adult middleweight division and took home gold. But it wasn’t the medal that makes it a success in his eyes:

“When I was young, I’d fight to win. When I became an accomplished competitor, I’d fight to keep me motivated. Now that I am past my prime and my team is a priority, I fight because I have a lot of fun when I do it.

There is nothing better than the support of people that seem to appreciate my Jiu-Jitsu. I’d like to thank my students and everyone that knows that a win for me means a lot more than just a medal.

Good old gold. I missed you, too.”
