The inaugural Master & Senior World Championship is set to go down October 7 at California’s Long Beach Pyramid, and Jiu-Jitsu’s toughest veterans are already gearing up to see action at the IBJJF-promoted tournament.

Names like Carlos Holanda, Alexandre “Gigi” Paiva, Rodrigo Munduruca, Bernardo Pitel, Daniel Beleza and Cassio Werneck are all set to take to the mats in combat.

“I haven’t done anything special, just plain old training. Competing over there won’t be some grueling ordeal; it’ll be a pleasure,” says Carlos “Esquisito” Holanda. “Of course, I know I’m going to run into old rivals. But I’ve tested myself in the division on two occasions, and I won. To make the most of the two months I’ll be in the States, in November I’ll compete at the No-Gi Worlds, an event I’ll be taking part in for the fourth time in a row.”

Now Daniel Beleza, who recently won the Boston Open light featherweight adult division for the second time, is doing his final preparations for both competitions. “I’ll likely compete at the Master Worlds and then head to New York for the Abu Dhabi WPJJC Trials. My training’s been going off; I’ve been really honing my bottom game,” said the Francisco “Sazinho” Sá student.

To prove just how slick his guard has gotten, Daniel Beleza sent GRACIEMAG.com the following exclusive video of a triangle from closed guard.

O 1º Mundial Master & Sênior rola no dia 7 de outubro, na Pirâmide de Long Beach, na Califórnia. Os veteranos mais duros do Jiu-Jitsu vão entrar em ação na competição da IBJJF.

Nomes como Carlos Holanda, Alexandre “Gigi” Paiva, Rodrigo Munduruca, Bernardo Pitel, Daniel Beleza e Cassio Werneck já estão garantidos nos dojôs.

“Não venho fazendo nenhum treino especial, só treinando mesmo. Lutar lá não será nenhuma tarefa difícil, será um prazer”, diz Carlos Holanda, o Esquisito. “Claro, sei que vou encontrar antigos rivais. Mas já me testei na categoria em duas oportunidades, e fui campeão. Aproveitando os dois meses que ficarei na América, em novembro vou disputar o Mundial No-Gi sem kimono, evento que participarei pela quarta vez consecutiva”.

Já Daniel Beleza, que faturou recentemente o bicampeonato do Boston Open no pluma adulto, está nos preparativos finais também para duas competições. “Devo competir no Mundial Master e depois encaro a Seletiva para Abu Dhabi em Nova York. O treino está sinistro, venho afiando muito meu jogo por baixo”, garantiu o pupilo de Francisco Sá, o Sazinho.

Team Lloyd Irvin lightweight Jonathan Torres was one of the big standouts of last weekend’s IBJJF-promoted Boston Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship, of which Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa is absolute champion.

After beating Augusto “Tanquinho” Mendes in the lightweight final, JT spoke with GRACIEMAG.com about the move he felt was decisive in his celebrated victory. “I like the omoplata I used to sweep,” said the New York-born black belt.

JT promptly agreed to teach the move for GRACIEMAG.com readers. Take note of the foot he places on his teammate’s right bicep, while he sinks grips on the sleeve and collar on the left side.

JT then pulls his opponent’s hand to his hip and sinks an omoplata lock. Next, he switches his left hand from the collar to the arm, freeing up his right hand to keep his opponent from passing his leg over in defense.

Now, JT grabs the lapel and prepares to jump across to the other side. To keep from getting tipped over, the opponent posts his right hand, which is the cue for Jonathan to pass the lapel to his left hand and then somersault for the sweep.

O peso leve Jonathan Torres (Lloyd Irvin) foi um dos grandes destaques do Boston Open de Jiu-Jitsu, realizado pela IBJJF no último fim de semana e que teve Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa como campeão absoluto.

Após vencer Augusto “Tanquinho” Mendes na final dos leves, JT conversou com o GRACIEMAG.com sobre que golpe ele sentiu ter sido decisivo na festejada conquista. “Gostei da omoplata que usei para raspar”, disse o faixa-preta nascido em Nova York.

JT prontamente se dispôs a ensinar os macetes do golpe para os leitores do GRACIEMAG.com. Repare no pé no bíceps direito do companheiro de treinos, enquanto ele usa as duas mãos para dominar a manga e a gola do lado esquerdo.

JT então puxa a mão do oponente para seu quadril e encaixa a chave omoplata. Em seguida, troca a pegada de mãos e bloqueia a perna do oponente que tenta se proteger.

Agora, JT ensina a puxar a lapela, abrir as pernas e se projetar, catando a lapela por baixo da axila. Eis aí uma bonita raspagem para o seu jogo.

The UMASS Athletics gymnasium in the US state of Massachusetts was stage to yet another major IBJJF tournament gracing the competition calendar—the Boston Open. And the big name to surface there was Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa of team Soul Fighters, who won the absolute and took third in the middleweight division. Other standouts were: Jonathan Torres of Lloyd Irvin, who won the lightweight division; Wilson Reis of Godói JJ, the featherweight champion; and Daniel Beleza of SAS, number one at light featherweight.

In the overall team contest, Kimura took top spot, followed by Lloyd Irvin and GFTeam.

O UMASS Athletics, nos EUA, recebeu mais um grande torneio da IBJJF, o Boston Open. Por lá o grande nome foi Rafael “Formiga” Barbosa (Soul Fighters), que venceu o absoluto e ficou com o terceiro lugar no médio. Outros destaques foram Jonathan Torres (Lloyd Irvin), campeão dos leves, Wilson Reis (Godói JJ), no pena, e Daniel Beleza (SAS), no pluma.

Entre as equipes, a Kimura ficou com o título, seguida pela Lloyd Irvin e GF Team.
