Black-belt Gustavo Batista, 22, seems to have no time to waste. One sign of this came after his triumph at the 2019 European Jiu-Jitsu Championship in January. The Atos star read the questions sent over the phone, reflected and answered beautifully — in just over an hour.

As an athlete, Batista doesn’t waste time either. He was a blue-belt world champion in 2015 — and in 2018 he was already repeating the feat with the black belt around his waist.

In editions of the Euros, he is usually even “luckier”: Gustavo has won every time he fought in Portugal. He got double gold at blue (’15), purple (’16), brown (’17) and now black. He also became one of the youngest fighters to win the Euros’ absolute division — losing by a few months to Rodolfo Vieira, who won in 2012 aged 22 years and four months. But Batista can claim to have beaten Roger Gracie’s mark of 24 years, from 2005.

More recently, at the Los Angeles BJJ Pro, Gustavo succeeded in the heavyweight division as he bested Fellipe Trovo to win a 4,000-dollar check, his engine already revving up for this year’s Pan. Graciemag talked to the Santa Catarina native to try to extract his recipe for becoming a victorious fighter. Here’s what we got out of him.

GRACIEMAG: After the Euros, another title at the BJJ Pro. What did you learn from the competition?

GUSTAVO BATISTA: I always like to keep myself active, competing. I fought in the IBJJF’s Los Angeles BJJ Pro to keep up the pace, but also for the prize money. I managed to work on all that I’ve been practicing — my guard, passes, and also taking down, which is a part of what I’ve been learning here training at Atos.

You are living in San Diego, Calif. You were born in Palhoça, moved to São Paulo, and have ended up in the U.S. Was it a big adventure until cementing yourself as a champion?

I’ve always sought to reach the next level, and in BJJ this evolution requires us not to waste time if we want to evolve as a competitor. I trained in my town until I was a blue-belt, and there I noticed I needed more competition-focused training. That’s when I went to São Paulo, where I evolved a good deal and became a black-belt. Then came the time to take another step in my career, looking for greater professionalization. Difficulties abounded: criticism, financial troubles, bad living conditions, lack of sponsors. But I knew that all of those complications would be temporary. Thank God everything went as planned, life got better, and the titles are coming. It was very much worth it.

What exactly were you looking for moving from NS Brotherhood to Atos? And did you find it?

I was looking for more teamwork, support for my career and the vision of a teacher like André Galvão, who is a very experienced athlete, renowned and an exemplary leader. To sum it up, I was looking for greater professionalization. And I found it, yes.

Who inspires you when you fight?

From my start I was always inspired by Rodolfo Vieira (GFTeam). I also really like the jiu-jitsu of my teacher André Galvão and Lucas Lepri (Alliance) — they are the three guys I would watch most in videos. I think my top game resembles Lucas’s a bit, in fact.

So you had it all mapped out before the Euros’ absolute final…

[Laughs.] Yes. Thanks to that, I knew his game deeply, which helped me.

You beat Lepri 10-0. What was the decisive play?

I actually believe it was the start, when I called him to my guard already managing to perform the sweep. It was a decisive factor in the final; after all, I managed to open a 2-0 score against an experienced, technical guy, and getting on top to boot. It was an important win against a great athlete, but it’s in the past. Now it’s about keeping up the work and thinking about my new objectives.

You have won every European Championship you fought in, from blue to black. Is there a recipe for this?

I don’t know. What I seek is to keep myself training year ‘round. I keep my constancy of training for the whole season, even at the end of the year — after all, the European is in January. A recipe that has been working for me is to recharge my batteries in my hometown in December. I always travel there and count on the help of my old friends for training, and on my mom’s food, which works miracles. [Laughs.] My mind seeks to always evolve and learn new things to improve my jiu-jitsu — I think the recipe to efficient jiu-jitsu is constant evolution. We can’t stop learning.

When we saw you win the 2015 Worlds in Long Beach at blue, your pressure was something to behold. Do you think your style has changed much since?

It has a little. I believe I already had a solid game for the blue belt, because I always sought to extract the most knowledge out of my higher-ranked partners around me.

Tell us a good story from the time you used to train with the Miyaos, who this year also swept the competition at the Euros.

I don’t know whether I have a good story, but I have good memories. There was even one time we trained so much we got sick. [Laughs.] They really train a lot and are very disciplined. I learned lots of things from Paulo and João, two guys who helped me evolve a bunch in those days. They are examples as athletes and people.

Your sweeps and your pressure from the top seem very even. How does one train to achieve that?

I try to challenge myself in my training. For example, if you feel better on top, you have to challenge yourself and play guard. And vice versa. Without fear of having a bad time. It’s important to practice your difficulty because that can and will happen in competition. And there’s an interesting point in this: when the goal of your training is to improve your difficulties, you consequently gain in motivation, because you start training with more desire to solve that problem, correct the flaw.

What does your training look like today?

Training sessions with Prof. Galvão are pretty varied: I do some drills, specific training and plenty of rolls too. The training session always has a different format, and also quite challenging. Three times a week I do very specific physical preparation for BJJ. On average I train four to five hours daily; depends on the day.

What have you learned about competition from Luiza, your girlfriend?

I have learned a lot. Luiza is more experienced than me at black belt and imparts a lot of what she’s been through on the mats, good and bad — all that she’s been through in training and competition. This helps me a lot.

You hit a bit of a wall in World Championships at purple and brown, right? What did you learn there?

Yes, the losses suck, but they helped me keep my thirst of wanting to improve each time until I got the black belt. Since the blue belt, I’ve always trained thinking of evolving to the max, and I learned that the colored belts are important to acquire experiences, good and bad, for the big time. The lesson is that we can’t get shaken up with defeats at the start of our career, because it’s when we reach the black belt that everything really matters.

O faixa-preta Gustavo Batista, 22 anos, não parece ter tempo a perder. Um sinal disso foi ao responder nossa entrevista, feita após o ouro absoluto no Europeu de Jiu-Jitsu de 2019, no fim de janeiro. O craque da Atos leu as perguntas cabulosas enviadas pelo celular, refletiu e respondeu bonito, em pouco mais de uma hora.

Como atleta, Batista tampouco perde tempo. Foi campeão mundial como faixa-azul em 2015 – e em 2018 já repetia o feito com a faixa-preta na cintura.

Nos Europeus, ele costuma dar ainda mais “sorte”, palavra que pode significar competência para aproveitar as oportunidades: Gustavo venceu todas as vezes em que lutou em Portugal. Foi ouro no peso e absoluto na azul (2015), roxa (2016), marrom (2017) e, agora, na faixa-preta. De quebra, tornou-se um dos mais jovens lutadores a conquistar o absoluto faixa-preta no Europeu – só perde, por poucos meses, para Rodolfo Vieira, campeão com 22 anos e 4 meses, no ano de 2012. Batista, contudo, ficou à frente de Roger Gracie, campeão absoluto com 24 anos, em 2005.

Mais recentemente, no Los Angeles BJJ Pro, Gustavo faturou o prêmio no peso pesado, ao vencer Fellipe Trovo pelo topo do pódio e o cheque de 4 mil dólares, já no esquenta rumo ao Pan deste ano. GRACIEMAG: Depois do Europeu, mais um título no BJJ Pro. O que aprendeu na competição?
GUSTAVO BATISTA: Gosto sempre de me manter ativo, competindo. Lutei o BJJ Pro de Los Angeles da IBJJF para manter o ritmo, mas também pela premiação em dinheiro. Consegui trabalhar tudo que venho treinando, minha guarda, as passagens e também derrubar que é uma parte que venho aprendendo bastante aqui nos treinos na Atos.

Você está morando em San Diego, na Califa; nasceu em Palhoça, mudou para São Paulo, e agora para os EUA. Passou por muita aventura antes de se consagrar?
Sempre busquei atingir um próximo nível, e no Jiu-Jitsu essa evolução exige que a gente não perca tempo se quer evoluir como competidor. Treinei na minha cidade até a faixa-azul, e lá percebi que precisava de um treino mais voltado para as competições. Foi quando fui para São Paulo, onde evoluí bastante e me tornei faixa-preta. Depois, chegou a hora de dar mais um passo na carreira, em busca de maior profissionalização. As dificuldades foram diversas: críticas, dificuldade financeira, más condições de moradia, falta de patrocinadores. Mas eu sabia que todas essas complicações seriam temporárias. Graças a Deus, tudo correu como o esperado, a vida melhorou e os títulos estão vindo. Valeu muito a pena.

O que você buscava exatamente ao se mudar da NS Brotherhood para a Atos? Encontrou?
Buscava mais trabalho em equipe, apoio para a minha carreira e a visão de um professor como o André Galvão, que é um atleta muito experiente, renomado e um exemplo de líder. Buscava em resumo uma profissionalização maior. E encontrei, sim.

Você se inspira em quem ao lutar?
Desde o meu início sempre me inspirei no Rodolfo Vieira (GFTeam). Também gosto muito do Jiu-Jitsu do meu professor André Galvão e do Lucas Lepri (Alliance) – são os três caras a que mais assistia em vídeos. Eu acho o meu jogo por cima um pouco parecido com do Lucas, inclusive.

Então você estava com tudo mapeado antes da final do absoluto no Europeu…
(Risos) Sim, graças a isso eu conhecia o jogo dele a fundo, o que me ajudou.

Você venceu o Lepri por 10 a 0. Qual foi o lance decisivo da luta?
Acredito que foi mesmo o início, quando eu chamei para a guarda já conseguindo efetuar a raspagem. Foi um fator decisivo para a luta, afinal eu consegui abrir logo 2 a 0 contra um cara experiente e técnico, e ainda ficando por cima. Foi uma vitória importante contra um grande atleta, mas já passou. Agora é continuar o trabalho e pensar nos próximos objetivos.

Você venceu todos os Europeus que disputou, da azul à preta. Existe uma receita para isso?
Não sei. O que procuro é me manter treinando o ano todo. Mantenho a constância nos treinos em toda a temporada, inclusive no fim do ano, afinal o Europeu já é em janeiro. Uma receita que tem dado certo para mim é recarregar as baterias na minha cidade natal em dezembro. Viajo sempre para lá e conto com a ajuda dos meus velhos amigos nos treinos, e com a comida da minha mãe, que faz mágica (risos). Minha cabeça procura sempre evoluir e aprender coisas novas para melhorar meu Jiu-Jitsu – acho que a receita para um Jiu-Jitsu eficiente é a evolução constante. Não podemos parar de aprender.

Quando vimos você vencer o Mundial 2015 em Long Beach, ainda como faixa-azul, sua pressão era de impressionar. Acha que seu estilo de jogo mudou muito de lá para cá?
Mudou um pouco. Creio que eu já tinha um jogo sólido para a faixa-azul, pois sempre busquei extrair o máximo de aprendizado dos meus companheiros graduados à minha volta.

Conte uma história boa que você viveu na época em que treinava com os Miyao, que este ano também varreram a concorrência no Europeu…
Não sei se tenho uma boa história, mas tenho boas lembranças. Teve uma vez em que treinamos tanto que ficamos até doentes (risos). Eles realmente treinam muito e são muito regrados. Aprendi muita coisa com o Paulo e o João, dois caras que me ajudaram a evoluir bastante nessa época. São exemplos de atletas e pessoas.

Suas raspagens e sua pressão por cima parecem bem niveladas. Como treinar para alcançar isso?
Tento me desafiar nos treinos. Por exemplo, se você se sente melhor por cima, tem de se desafiar e fazer guarda. E vice-versa. Sem medo de sufoco. É importante treinar a sua dificuldade porque isso pode e vai acontecer nos campeonatos. E tem um ponto interessante nisso: quando o objetivo do seu treino é melhorar suas dificuldades, você consequentemente ganha em motivação, pois passa a treinar com mais vontade de solucionar aquele problema, corrigir a falha.

Como são seus treinos hoje?
Os treinos com o professor Galvão são bem variados: faço alguns drills, treinos específicos e bastante rola também. O treino tem sempre um formato diferente e bem desafiador. Três vezes na semana, faço preparação física bem específica para o Jiu-Jitsu. Em média eu treino quatro a cinco horas diárias, depende do dia.

O que você aprendeu sobre campeonatos com a Luiza, sua namorada?
Aprendi muito. A Luiza é mais experiente do que eu na faixa-preta e me passa bastante o que viveu de bom e ruim nos tatames, tudo o que ela já passou em treinos e competições. Isso me ajuda bastante.

Você deu uma tropeçada em Mundiais, na roxa e marrom, certo? O que aprendeu ali?
Sim, as derrotas são ruins, mas ajudaram a manter a minha sede de querer melhorar cada vez mais até conquistar a faixa-preta. Desde a azul eu sempre treinei pensando em evoluir ao máximo, e aprendi que as faixas coloridas são importantes para adquirir experiências, boas e más, para a hora da verdade. A lição é que não podemos nos abalar com as derrotas no início da carreira, porque é quando chegamos à faixa-preta que tudo realmente importa.

In late October, some of Brazil’s top BJJ fighters took part in the Rio BJJ Pro, an IBJJF tournament featuring cash prizes. Among the winners was Luan Carvalho of Oak Jiu-Jitsu.

Competing in the tough middleweight division, Luan had to advance through his bracket and yet keep some of his stamina to face Alexandre Cavalieri (Alliance). The final was a close one, but Luan gained an advantage with a better takedown game, eventually winning on points.

No fim do mês de outubro, os craques do Jiu-Jitsu presentes em terras cariocas se aventuraram no Rio BJJ Pro, torneio da IBJJF que premia seus campeões não só com medalhas douradas mas também com belos prêmios em dinheiro. Entre os campeões, nosso GMI Luan Carvalho, da Oak Jiu-Jitsu em Macaé, mordeu a sua fatia do bolo.

Em ação na complicada divisão de peso médio, Luan teve de avançar nas chaves e guardar o gás para encarar Alexandre Cavalieri (Alliance). O duelo foi acirrado, mas Luan teve vantagem ao trabalhar melhor o jogo de quedas e venceu a disputa nos pontos.

Last weekend, the city of New York welcomed the NY BJJ Pro, an event that pays cash prizes to the best of each division.

As well as the women’s absolute divisions from blue up to black belt, the men’s weight divisions paid its winners, and well-known names could be found on the podiums.

At ultra-heavy, it was Max Gimenis (GFTeam) who got the top prize. He faced Mahamed Aly (Lloyd Irvin) in the final and outplayed him to bag the gold medal plus 4,000 dollars.

At heavyweight, Kaynan Duarte (Atos) soared. Still a newbie in his black belt career, he took the top spot on the podium that had Murilo Santana (Unity) coming in second, followed by Tim Spriggs (Lloyd Irvin) and Holando Monteiro (GD Jiu-Jitsu) sharing third.

In the middleweight division, Manuel Ribamar (Unity) bested John Satava (Alliance), who took silver plus 1,500 bucks.

Before that, in the featherweight final, Jamil Hill (Lloyd Irvin) showed he isn’t done riding the momentum from his recent world championship. The American defeated Thiago Macedo (Rodrigo Pinheiro JJ) in the final.

In the women’s absolute, Cláudia do Val (De la Riva) beat Nathiely de Jesus (Unity), securing the 1,500-dollar check for herself.

A movimentada Nova York recebeu no último final de semana grandes feras do Jiu-Jitsu na sua edição do BJJ Pro, evento que premia os melhores de cada categoria não apenas com as medalhas douradas mas com prêmios em dinheiro.

Além dos absolutos, da faixa-azul à faixa-preta feminino, as categorias de peso no masculino premiaram seus vencedores, e nomes conhecidos do cenário figuraram nos pódios do pena ao pesadíssimo.

Na categoria mais pesada, a dos pesadíssimos, quem levou a melhor foi Max Gimenis (GFTeam). A fera encarou Mahamed Aly (Lloyd Irvin) na final e conseguiu bater a fera, levando para casa os 4 mil dólares de premiação.

Já nos pesos pesados foi a vez de Kaynan Duarte (Atos) brilhar. Ainda novo em sua corrida na faixa-preta, Kaynan ficou no topo do pódio que teve Murilo Santan (Unity) em segundo, além de Tim Spriggs (Lloyd Irvin) e Holando Monteiro (GD Jiu-Jitsu) em terceiro.

No peso médio, Manuel Ribamar (Unity) faturou o ouro e o cheque da IBJJF, ao bater John Satava (Alliance) na finalíssima. Satava mordeu, além da prata, um prêmio de 1.500 dólares pela segunda colocação.

Antes, no peso-pena, Jamil Hill (Lloyd Irvin) mostrou que ainda está embalado após a conquista do título mundial. A fera americana mordeu o topo do pódio ao bater Thiago Macedo (Rodrigo Pinheiro JJ) no duelo final da categoria.

No absoluto feminino, Cláudia do Val (De la Riva) superou Nathiely de Jesus (Unity) para garantir a premiação de 1.500 dólares.

Carina Santi celebrates the absolute title.

What can you do in 18 seconds during a roll? A cunning takedown, or a safe guard pull, perhaps. But in the case of Carina Santi, a black-belt at G13BJJ, 18 seconds was enough time to amass five points and finish for absolute gold at the São Paulo BJJ Pro, a tournament held early this month.

To achieve this, Carina pulled guard and quickly swept. Then she advanced to the side as Jéssica Swanson (Soul Fighters) tried to escape. Noticing her opponent’s oversight, Carina went for the collar and choked her, the clock still showing less than 20 seconds. The win was made sweeter by the check she won for 1,500 reais.

Fellipe sets up the neck attack to finish via triangle. 

Fighting at São Paulo BJJ Pro early this month, Fellipe Andrew shone again. But to win gold as well as a check for 4,000 reais, the Zenith representative had to find an interesting finish.

The final match in the heavyweight division, pitting Fellipe against Ruan Oliveira (Soul Fighters), was pretty challenging. Wise to Fellipe’s attacks from the guard, Ruan worked on top from the stacking position, with both hands on Fellipe’s pants, without exposing himself to triangle attacks.

What Ruan wasn’t expecting was an adapted version of a triangle: Sneakily, Fellipe puts his cross hand on Ruan’s collar and sets the triangle. Without help from Ruan’s shoulder, Fellipe’s cross hand creates the necessary adjustment to apply pressure. Click the play button below to check out this creative solution.

O que você consegue fazer em 18 segundos num treino de Jiu-Jitsu, caro leitor? Uma queda sorrateira, ou uma segura puxada para a guarda, talvez. Mas no caso de Carina Santi, faixa-preta da nossa GMI G13BJJ, 18 segundos foi tempo suficiente para acumular cinco pontos e finalizar pelo ouro absoluto do São Paulo BJJ Pro, realizado no início deste mês.

Para conseguir tal façanha, Carina puxou para a guarda e rapidamente raspou. Em seguida, avançou para a lateral, enquanto Jéssica Swanson (Soul Fighters) tentava escapar. No descuido da adversária, Carina foi com tudo na gola e estrangulou, com o relógio marcando ainda poucos segundos da finalíssima que rendeu a Carina um cheque de 1.500 reais além do ouro no aberto.

Em ação no São Paulo BJJ Pro, realizado no começo deste mês de julho, Fellipe Andrew mais uma vez brilhou na faixa-preta. Para conquistar o ouro e o cheque de quatro mil reais, porém, a fera da Zenith teve que tirar uma interessante finalização da cartola.

O duelo final da categoria de pesados, contra Ruan Oliveira (Soul Fighters) foi desafiadora para Fellipe. Esperto nos ataques da guarda de Fellipe, Ruan agiu por cima na posição de embocarda, com as duas mãos na calça de Fellipe, sem se expor aos ataques no triângulo.

O que Ruan não esperava, contudo, é que uma adaptação do triângulo poderia rolar: sorrateiramente, Fellipe encaixa a mão cruzada na gola de Ruan e bate o triângulo. Sem a ajuda do ombro de Ruan, a mão cruzada de Fellipe cria o ajuste necessário para a pressão do golpe que determinou o vencedor da disputa.

Last weekend, the town of Barueri, Brazil played host to the São Paulo BJJ Pro — an event featuring prize money and, as expected, particularly competitive participants.

Athletes from all parts of the country vied for absolute gold, and each of the men’s adult black-belt divisions had cash prizes.

Among the black-belt champions winning R$ 4,000 each were ultra-heavyweight Igor “Tigrão” Schneider (NS Brotherhood), heavyweight Fellipe Andrew (Zenith), middleweight Hugo Marques (Soul Fighters) and featherweight José Tiago (Cicero Costha). The women’s absolute champion, Carina Santi (G13BJJ), walked away with an oversized check for R$ 1,500.

Competidores de todas as partes do Brasil entraram na disputa em busca do prêmio do absoluto, além dos faixas-pretas no adulto masculino, que tiveram cheques em jogo em cada categoria de peso.

Entre os vencedores na faixa-preta, que levaram quatro mil reais cada um, tivemos Igor “Tigrão” Schneider (NS Brotherhood), no pesadíssimo; Fellipe Andrew (Zenith), no pesado; Hugo Marques (Soul Fighters) no médio; e José Tiago (Cicero Costha), no pena. No feminino faixa-preta, no absoluto, Carina Santi (G13BJJ) levou a melhor e faturou mil e quinhentos reais.
