After you secure the back, submit with a choke or armbar. Check it out:

Carlinhos Gracie’s student and three times world champion, the Jiu-Jitsu fighter is an elite guard passer who also shone on the mat without wearing the Gi. He managed to submit many beasts in No-Gi such as the now UFC star Urijah Faber.

In the 2005 ADCC, held in Long Beach, California, Feitosa and Faber measured forces at the quarterfinals of the 66kg weigh category. The fight started fast with the Californian setting the pace on top.

Thus, a strategic detail changed the fight. Marcinho twisted up and stopped in Faber’s back. He stuck the hooks in and grabbed the neck.

Marcio Feitosa got the bronze medal that year.

His final match was against world champion Rafael Lovato (Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu). The duel began balanced for both competitors, but after a while Flavio “Cachorrinho” was able to find space, get to Lovato’s side and attack the back. Calmly, the GB athlete used the lapel to finish with a choke. Check it out!

Keenan Cornelius won his first black belt tournament at the Abu Dhabi WPJJC West Coast Trial on Saturday, Sept. 22 by submitting all four of his opponents.

In one of his matches against Eliot Kelly, he went for a traditional berimbolo technique but detoured to another path. He was able to secure the back and even the choke after he abandoned the deep de la riva hook while upside down. A popular combination here would be to come up with the leg drag but he opted for his intended destination, the back.

Take a look at the move below and let us know what you think:

It seems that our media crews are becoming more knowledgable these days about our martial art.

A store owner in Orlando, Florida was giving a video interview about the recent shoplifters at his store when mid-interview he spots one of the suspects and runs to catch him while leaving. The store owner grabbed onto the suspect, who was previously seen on tape stuffing a whole carton of eggs into his pants, and threw him to the floor, holding the seatbelt position and even sinking the hooks.

Initially referred to as a “full nelson” by the CNN correspondents, a reporter corrects himself after seeing the footage and attributes the moves to Jiu-Jitsu. He credits Jiu-Jitsu as he mentions how the store owner “put his legs around him.”

This position earned the store owner four points within an IBJJF competition as well as the pleasure of being reimbursed for his stolen goods and sending a thief to jail.

Held at Club Hebraica on May 5, the Copa Podio Lightweight GP hosted the great show of the young Diego Borges (Checkmat), who didn’t get the title, but his performance was recognized by the crowd, by analysts and other black belts.

Champion Leandro Lo, for example: “I quickly noticed in our first fight that I could not play carelessly. It wouldn’t work. You can only go focused against him, he is really very strong,” praised Leandro, who had his first fight with Diego and, hours later, the final. In both fights, he won by only one advantage.

Check out what Diego, who trains with Carlos Esquisito in Manaus, learned from the silver, and what he expects of the World Championship on May 29.

GRACIEMAG: You lost the title but being complimented by Xande Ribeiro and others wasn’t bad at all …

DIEGO BORGES: Yeah, I think it was worth it. I think my performance was satisfactory. I managed to have good results against athletes of the highest level. I had five fights in the GP lasting six minutes and missed a bit. My strategy was to combine the technique to an aggressive and busy game, seeking to score first and keep the pace until the end. I like to show a strategy of Jiu-Jitsu which is always played forward and I like to keep the pace from beginning to end in my fights. This is my style.

How was the final with Leandro in your analysis?

Lo is an amazing guy and very strategic, an excellent athlete and, above all, he is humble. The fight was tough, we had a busy final and we pleased the crowd by showing quality Jiu-Jitsu. I tried and almost managed to take his back, but I believe I failed for not having followed him as he rolled. I was concerned about defending myself from his sweep. If we fight again, I won’t change my game. I will correct the mistakes and seek the victory.

In the semifinal you faced another guy who was sweeping everyone in the competition, Vinicius Marinho. What was crucial in that decisive victory, after the takedown and mount?

I think I just waited for the right moment in his attempts of takedowns to apply the counterattack, that’s how I managed the takedown and score first. I landed in a good position and only the mount followed. He is a tough guy. I knew it would be a great fight.

And now you get to the Worlds very focused. No diet? Are you going to fight as a middleweight?

I’m going as a middleweight. It was hard to lose weight to fight at lightweight. I hope to have good results in the Worlds and exceed expectations. I will complete my training at Lucas Leite’s camp at Checkmat headquarters in California. I’m trying to recycle my training a bit and my techniques with the guys. All my teammates will be there, so they can expect the same style. The goal is to have the same performance in Long Beach.

>>> So you don’t be left out of the World, click here and enroll.

In efforts to shed light on the berimbolo technique and in honor of our most recent print issue, #194, we give you another take on the move. The back-taking phenomenon that has recently influenced many games of competitors from white to black, is explained by GMA GB Knoxville head instructor Samuel Braga.

He recently spoke with GRACIEMAG about how he discovered the move and where he thinks it’s going. Also see the video below of examples where he has used the move in his past competitions as early as 2005.

GRACIEMAG: When did you first figure out the berimbolo move?

SAMUEL BRAGA: I figured the move out in 2003 as a purple belt, after struggling to sweep from the back step as people were avoiding my back step sweep. I was getting stuck in that position while inverted as I’m really flexible. I was using a similar move as a blue belt, but it was more like taking the back. It was not the berimbolo yet.

What was the most memorable time you implemented it in competition?

Most memorable time was at the Brazilian Nationals as a purple belt in a really tough match. I thought I was going to lose it, but towards the end I got the move. After that it was the 2005 finals at worlds for sure as a black belt.

What do you think of the viral hype around the move today with even white belts using the technique?

I think it’s amazing seeing everyone using it and how much Jiu-Jitsu is envolving with the berimbolo. I think it is just the beginning for a new trend.

Are there pieces of the move everyone is missing out on? If so, what is missing?

I think people are missing some details that can be really important. Hip control for one. A lot of people are not controlling the hips by letting their outside hook get too low on the position so they usually miss it. But if they miss the move once then it is like a cycle. They can always go back to De La Riva and pull the move again.

What do you think of its evolution to the larger black belt divisions recently?

I think it is starting to evolve to a point that all the belts are using it. If you don’t know the move, you are behind. At least have a deep understanding to try to counter or stop the move. It’s amazing watching even heavyweights and guys like Buchecha using the move and being good at it.
