Austin, TX — The Austin Open IBJJF continues to reinforce the city’s reputation as a rising epicenter for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. But at this year’s event, one competitor stole the spotlight: Sandra Kowalska.

Representing Gracie Barra, Kowalska captured gold in the Gi Open Division, an impressive feat for the ascending blue belt. Her win in Austin adds to an already stellar year—claiming four gold medals at the Houston Open, a gold at the Dallas Open, and a podium finish at the prestigious Pan Nogi Championship.

Born in Gdynia, Poland, Kowalska’s athletic roots began on the handball court, where she competed on the Polish youth national team. Her drive and discipline were further sharpened during her service in the Polish Navy, traits that now fuel her relentless work ethic on the Jiu-Jitsu mats.

Sandra’s transition into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been nothing short of transformative. Known for her radiant energy, fierce competitiveness, and unwavering team spirit, she’s become both a leader and inspiration within the Gracie Barra community. Whether she’s battling it out in open weight divisions or rallying her team at international events, her presence is impossible to ignore.

With her eyes firmly set on the global stage and a growing list of accolades, Sandra Kowalska is quickly becoming a name to watch in the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

A representative of Kronos BJJ in Kansas City, Léo Peçanha appeared last weekend at the IBJJF Austin Open in Texas.

Fighting in the masters’ division, he managed to win double gold, and while that alone would be something to write home about, one particular move earned a special degree of attention.

To secure one of his wins of the day, Léo employed his swift, technical flying armbar. Not leaving much for his opponent to do, Léo sought dominant grips, positioned himself and jumped confidently before spinning at the top to pass the leg and conclude the play.

Faixa-preta representante da nossa GMI Equipe Kronos BJJ, em Kansas City, nos EUA, Léo Peçanha entrou com tudo para guerrear no Austin Open da IBJJF, realizado no último final de semana, no Texas.

Em ação na divisão de masters, a fera mordeu não só o título do peso, como também garantiu sucesso absoluto nas disputas em peso aberto. A conquista dupla já seria motivo de sobra para vibrar, mas um lance plástico valeu nosso destaque de hoje.

Para garantir uma de suas vitórias do dia, Léo aplicou seu veloz e técnico armlock voador. Sem dar muitas chances para seu adversário, Léo tratou de buscar as pegadas dominantes, se posicionar e pular com confiança no golpe, antes de girar no alto para passar a perna e concluir a chave.

This weekend, Texas’s Round Rock Sports Center welcomed lots of jiu-jitsu as it held the IBJJF’s Austin Open.

Mahamed Aly of team Lloyd Irvin dominated the tournament in and out of the gi, managing a perfect four-title campaign.

The sitting super-heavyweight world champion climbed a step to the ultra-heavy division and started his mission on Friday, submitting Matthew McCormick (LEAD BJJ). In the absolute, it was Rafael Lima (Atos) who fell to his pressure in the final.

No-gi day the following day found Mahamed again defeating McCormick. Then he met Manuel Ribamar (Unity) in the absolute final, beating him as well.

O Round Rock Sports Center, no Texas, recebeu dois dias de muito Jiu-Jitsu com o Austin Open da IBJJF, nos dias 21 e 22 de julho.

Grande nome de destaque no torneio, Mahamed Aly, da equipe Lloyd Irvin, dominou o torneio com e sem kimono, ao faturar quatro ouros na faixa-preta adulto.

Atual campeão mundial no super pesado, Mahamed mergulhou no pesadíssimo e começou a missão na sexta-feira, ao finalizar Matthew McCormick (LEAD BJJ). Já no absoluto, foi a fez de Rafael Lima (Atos) sucumbir à pressão de Mahamed.

No segundo dia, nas disputas sem pano, Mahamed voltou a bater Matthew McCormick, e logo em seguida partiu para a final de peso aberto, no qual encontrou e superou Manuel Ribamar (Unity).

Experiente competidora, Fabiana Borges tem muitos truques na manga quando o assunto é uma final no Jiu-Jitsu. Em ação no Austin Open de 2016, em combate pelo ouro no peso aberto, Fabiana encarou Gegi Walker, mas não teve moleza no duelo absoluto.

Após quedar e chegar do lado, Gegi conseguiu escapar e ficar por cima. Com uma bela transição, Gegi atacou no leglock. Sem se espantar e com muita técnica, Fabiana escapou do golpe e trabalhou até ficar por cima, e desta vez dar sua cartada com uma bonita finalização no armlock.

No duelo, Miyao encarou Joseph Conery, e engana-se quem apostou na vitória de João jogando na guarda. Por cima, João se posicionou e atacou num bote certeiro o leglock para liquidar a fatura.

After beat their opponents one by one at featherweight division, João faced Washington Lima (GFTeam) in the final. With a great guard, his famous berimbolo and a choke at the end of the race, João conquered the gold and added points for IBJJF’s ranking. Check out the fight.

Após passar os duelos da chave peso-pluma, João encarou Washington Lima (GFTeam) na final. Com uma guarda afiada, seu famoso berimbolo e um estrangulamento no fim da disputa, João garantiu o ouro e mais alguns pontos no ranking da IBJJF, no qual figura na terceira colocação entre os faixas-pretas.

Contra Thiago Macedo (Club Pina), na disputa do ouro, Paulo venceu nos pontos. No fim do combate, quase pegou as costas e finalizou, mas o adversário mostrou boa defesa.

The 2015 Austin Open took place this Sunday and the champions of the most important division have been crowned.

In the male black belt open class division, Arnaldo Maidana ended up with the gold medal.

Monique Carvalho was the female open class black belt champion.

Maidana beat Inacio Neto in the final, while Monique defeated Fabiana Borges for the gold medal.
