Learn from Roger Gracie the tricks to avoid losing the armbar

Roger Gracie was in Rio de Janeiro recently to wow the crowd at Gracie Pro and teach the world the value of the basics.

The ten-time world champion also paid a visit to his friend Kléber “Buiú” Paulino’s gym, in a much-sought-after seminar among Gracie Barra students.

As he taught his favorite armbar from the guard, Roger said he learned from a student how to make the position more uncomfortable by swapping the hand that goes on the collar, and showed the way in which he likes controlling an opponent’s posture.

Roger also showed how he uses his legs to prevent his opponent from freeing their arm, as well as other details that can probably add something to your jiu-jitsu. You can catch the lesson in this video.

Souza stretches Gobi’s arm in the absolute division’s decider.

While his eye is certainly on the IBJJF’s Heavyweight GP he will take part in next weekend, Dimitrius Souza has been staying active in open tournaments on Brazilian soil, with no small degree of success.

The Alliance fighter recently competed in the Vitória Open, beating the heavyweight and absolute fields. In the absolute final, he came across Admilson Gobi (Lloyd Irvin) and, at the end of a tough battle, managed to get things stable on top and attack with a neat transition to an armbar. Michelle Nicolini attained this morning in Manila, Philippines her fourth win in MMA. In her second fight at One Championship, Asia’s biggest MMA organization, the eight-time BJJ world champion outplayed the undefeated Irina Mazepa as she sank an inverted armbar in round 1.

Mahamed Aly won double gold at the Euro No-Gi. IBJJF.

To win double gold at the European Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi IBJJF Championship, held last weekend, Mahamed Aly had to beat some stiff competition. Some of these battles were won by submission, and one of them drew plenty of attention from the public present in the Rome, Italy venue. A flying armbar, similar to that used by Davi Ramos in a 2015 ADCC final, was how Aly finished one of his absolute matches.

“It was in the quarterfinals,” he tells Graciemag. “Soon before that, my opponent tried to submit me with a foot lock from the de la Riva guard. I attack his foot as well, forcing him to let the position go. Then he sat and stretched his arm; then I made the move and won.”

Here he teaches two ways to defend and counter the famous toureando pass with the help of Antonio “Cara de Sapato” Junior.

He explains in Portuguese:

“As the opponent controls my pants I make a grip on his sleeves and as he walks to one side to pass, I follow his movement and stretch his arm. Then I put my elbow in the way and lean forward to trap his arm. As he rolls to defend the arm from an armbar, I go for side control. On the second defense, as he moves to the side to pass, I slide my hip out and put my leg between his body and arm. I also make a kimura grip on his arm. I use my leg and the grip to roll my opponent on his back and capture his arm for the finish.”

Gabriel Arges went all the way this past weekend at the 2015 Irvine Open.

He won the medium-heavyweight and the open class even having roughly one month of being a black belt.

So, we dug deep into our video vault and found this video of Arges teaching a sweep from the spider guard that ends with a surprising armlock.

He teaches in Portuguese: “First, control the sleeve and strecth your leg with the foot on the biceps. Make another grip on the bottom of the pants on the same side.Step on the ground and pull the opponent towards you and then place your knee between his/her legs. Use your foot on the biceps to bring the opponent down and then fake an attack to his/her foot so he/she sits up. As he sits up, pull the arm towards you and set up the armbar.”
