Enjoying his holidays in Manaus and his hometown of Manacapuru, both in the Brazilian state of Amazonas, Ronys Torres did the rounds at MMA event Mr. Cage 6 and Jiu-Jitsu tourney Amazon Black Belt Meeting, where roosterweight world champion Omar Salum had his farewell to competition in the gi. At Mr. Cage, on the 30th of last month, Ronys served as referee, as well as cornerman for his teammates from Nova União.

In a conversation with reporter Arthur Castro, Ronys said his down time is coming to an end, as he has a fight set for November 17 in Lisbon, Portugal. It will be the 27th fight for the two-time UFC fighter, who in September counted two years unbeaten with his win over Drew Fickett at Amazon Forest Combat, getting the technical knockout in just 47 seconds.

Ronys has holds a record of 22 wins and four losses, both of which came in the UFC.

Curtindo férias na capital Manaus e no seu município natal de Manacapuru, o lutador amazonense Ronys Torres circulou pelos eventos Mr. Cage 6 e Amazon Meeting Black Belt de Jiu-Jitsu, que marcou a despedida do campeão mundial dos galos Omar Salum das competições de kimono. No Mr. Cage, no último dia 30, atuou como árbitro central e córner dos seus companheiros da Nova União.

Em conversa com o repórter Arthur Castro, Ronys disse que sua folga estava para acabar, pois ele tem luta agendada para o dia 17 de novembro, em Lisboa, Portugal. Será a 27ª luta da fera, que completou dois anos invicto em setembro, com a vitória sobre Drew Fickett no Amazon Forest Combat, com um nocaute técnico em apenas 47 segundos.
Ronnys tem 22 vitórias e 4 derrotas, duas destas no UFC.

Amazonas is one of the states to have produced the most top-flight fighters in Brazil – beasts like José Aldo, Ronaldo Jacaré, Wallid Ismail, Xande and Saulo Ribeiro and so many others. The tradition of the land is Jiu-Jitsu, and there was no lack of it on a gala evening of fighting that included Royler Gracie’s farewell MMA fight.

The Gracie was unable to outdo Masakatsu Ueda in the main event. He lost by split decision, with the Japanese fighter controlling the action. Royler had a good moment in the first round, landing a takedown. But Ueda managed to work his way out and then control the tempo with solid kicks. He deserved to win by unanimous decision but a win is a win.

“I’m so happy to have fought a phenomenon,” said Ueda on Brazilian television channel Combate.

Royler (5w, 5l, 1d) bids farewell to the rings having fought one of the best fighters in Japan at present. At 45 years of age, the Gracie fought for three rounds against the 33-year-old Ueda (14w, 1l, 2d).

“I want to apologize to the public, but just being here, at my age, is a lot harder than being in front of a TV. My endurance wasn’t what it once was but I honored what I’ve done my whole life,” he said.

“My opponent is a dangerous one; I know him well. Regardless of the outcome, I ended things just right,” said Royler in closing, adding that he would like to see more support for Brazilian athletes.

In the other fights on the card, Antonio Braga Neto wasn’t in the main event but his win over Maiquel Falcão was definitely the best fight of the night. Braga was practically knocked out in the first round, literally driving on automatic, having taken an endless stream of strikes from his opponent’s heavy hands. The second round saw the black belt go for the takedown and use the Jiu-Jitsu savvy that has won him world championships, passing guard and finishing with a tight armbar.

“I’m not just Brazilian, I’m a ‘caboclo’ (term for indigenous people) from Amazonas!” He shouted, to a delirious crowd.

Ronys Torres took just 47 seconds in knocking out Drew Fickett, notching his eighth back-to-back win; Daniel Acácio put away Sergio Junior by knockout in 2:50 minutes. Marcos “Capitão” Alexandre used his Jiu-Jitsu to earn a unanimous decision over also black belt Daniel “Roupinol” Aguiar. The low point of the evening was Paulão Filho’s draw with Japanese Olympic judoka Satoshi Ishii. Even Paulo didn’t buy the draw:

“I must confess that I feel I didn’t win. But I’m ready to fight him again to settle this matter,” admitted Paulão, who was applauded for his sincerity.

In the all international bout, Jordan Smith overcame former UFC fighter Karo Parisyan. Also noteworthy was George Clay’s submission win over Anthony Birchack.

O Amazonas é um dos estados que formou mais lutadores de ponta no Brasil, feras como José Aldo, Ronaldo Jacaré, Wallid Ismail, Xande e Saulo Ribeiro, entre tantos outros. A tradição da terra é o Jiu-Jitsu, e não foi isso o que faltou numa noite de gala, com direito à despedida de Royler Gracie no MMA.

Na luta principal, o Gracie não venceu Masakatsu Ueda. Perdeu por decisão dividida, num combate controlado pelo japonês. Royler teve boa chance na primeira parcial, quando derrubou. Mas Ueda saiu do sufoco e controlou com bons chutes. Merecia até a vitória por decisão unânime, mas isso é o que menos importa.

“Fico super contente por ter lutado contra um fenômeno”, destacou Ueda no canal Combate.

Royler (5v-5d-1e) se despede dos ringues contra um dos melhores lutadores da atualidade no Japão. Aos 45 anos, o Gracie lutou três rounds contra Ueda (14v-1d-2e), de 33 anos.

“Queria me desculpar com o público, mas estar aqui dentro, na minha idade, é muito mais difícil que estar atrás de uma TV. Não estava no maior gás, mas tentei honrar o que fiz a vida inteira”, disse.

“Meu adversário é um oponente perigoso, o conheço de outros carnavais. Independentemente do resultado, fechei com chave de ouro”, encerrou Royler, que pediu mais apoio aos atletas brasileiros.

Nos outros combates, Antonio Braga Neto não fez a luta principal, mas a vitória contra Maiquel Falcão foi, certamente, a melhor da noite. Braga ficou praticamente nocauteado no primeiro round, literalmente no automático, após uma série de socos interminável do oponente, dono de uma mão pesada. No segundo assalto, o faixa-preta tratou de derrubar. Usou o bom Jiu-Jitsu, de campeão mundial, para passar a guarda e finalizar com uma justa chave de braço.

“Além de brasileiro, sou caboclo do Amazonas, porra!”, gritou, para o delírio de todos no ginásio.

Ronys Torres precisou de apenas 47s para nocautear Drew Fickett, oitavo triunfo seguido, e Daniel Acácio de 2min50 para aplicar o revés por nocaute em Sergio Junior. Marcos Alexandre, o Capitão, usou o Jiu-Jitsu para bater em decisão unânime o também faixa-preta Daniel Aguiar, o Roupinol. Decepção foi a luta entre Paulão Filho e o judoca campeão olímpico Satoshi Ishii. Nem Paulada engoliu o empate:

“Confesso que achei que não venci. Mas estou pronto para lutarmos novamente e resolver essa parada”, admitiu Paulão, que recebeu o aplauso do público pela sinceridade.

Na luta 100% internacional, Jordan Smith bateu o ex-UFC Karo Parisyan. Vale destacar a bela finalização também de George Clay sobre Anthony Birchack.

Na tarde de ontem, o AFC realizou sua pesagem nas dependências da Arena Amadeu Teixeira com astros do card e presenças ilustres, como Royce Gracie, Lyoto Machida e Cristiano Marcelo. A checagem de peso ocorreu tranquilamente, com alguns imprevistos. Foi o caso de Dilenos Lopes, que lutaria com o mexicano Dany Martinz, mas Martinez não compareceu e nem deu nenhuma satisfação à organização.

O americano Drew Ficket, escalado para enfrentar o ex-UFC Ronys Torres, no momento da pesagem ainda estava longe do peso programado, mas o combate será realizado. Yesterday afternoon, weigh-ins for the AFC were held in the Amadeu Teixeira arena with the stars of the show and some illustrious presences, like Royce Gracie, Lyoto Machida and Cristiano Marcelo. Weigh-ins took place in an orderly manner, with some unforeseen occurrences, as with the case of Dileno Lopes, who was set to fight Mexico’s Dany Martinez, who failed to show up and offered the organization no explanation.

The USA’s Drew Ficket, who’s set to fight two-time UFC fighter Ronys Torres, was way off weight when his turn to step on the scale came, but the fight will go through anyhow. Royler Gracie and his opponent weighed in without a hitch, as did the rest of the cast of the show, set to begin at 8pm Brasília time, 7pm Amazonas and Eastern Standard time. All’s set for Amazon Forest Combat, a new MMA promotion about to hold its maiden event this August 14 at the Manaus, Amazonas state’s Amadeu Teixeira arena. Top among the fights on a stellar card is Royler Gracie’s farewell MMA fight against Shooto champion Masakatsu Ueda, hometown Jiu-Jitsu world champion Braga Neto against one-time UFC fighter Maiquel Falcão, and two-time UFC fighter from the nearby village of Manacapuru Ronys Torres taking on also-UFC veteran Drew Ficket.

Among those lending their prestige to the event, Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, José Aldo and Royce Gracie will all attend the event, and UFC referee Mario Yamasaki will control the action in the cage. The promoters are expecting a packed house, with 12,000 spectators filling the stands.

Today, the 13th, marks the official weigh-ins, to be attended by ticket holders.

After some evening training sessions with former UFC fighter Fabricio Morango to get used to the equatorial climate, the four-time world champion of the Gracie family revealed his strategy.

“I don’t have one, to tell you the truth. I don’t go in with a pre-established strategy, I just dance according to the music. I ready for whatever comes, and I have faith in our family’s Jiu-Jitsu,” said the 45-year-old Jiu-Jitsu teacher, always with a smile on his face.

“I’d like to invite all Jiu-Jitsu practitioners in Manaus to come and root for me. I ask that they don’t look at it as a fight between Royler and another fighter but between Brazil and Japan. The local fans, as well as those from across the nation, will be key in my victory,” said the Gracie.

Tudo certo para a primeira edição do Amazon Forest Combat, que acerta os últimos detalhes para o evento do dia 14, na Arena Amadeu Teixeira, em Manaus, a partir de 19h. As grandes atrações do evento são a despedida de Royler Gracie no MMA, contra o japonês Masakatsu Ueda, e a luta do atual campeão mundial de Jiu-Jitsu Braga Neto, astro local.

Entre os convidados especiais confirmados para quarta-feira, estão Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, José Aldo e Royce Gracie, informa Arthur Castro. A arbitragem será feita por Mario Yamasaki, do UFC, e ring-girl será a ex-capa de “Playboy” Juju Salimeni, do programa “Pânico na TV!”. A previsão dos organizadores é de casa lotada, ou 12 mil pessoas.

Hoje, a partir de 15h, o evento promete organizar uma pesagem oficial de luxo, na própria Arena, para quem tem o ingresso.

Após alguns treinos noturnos com Fabricio Morango para se ambientar ao clima equatorial, o tetracampeão mundial da família Gracie revelou a estratégia.

“Não tenho, na verdade. Não vou com estratégia montada, e sim dançar conforme a música. Estou preparado para todas as situações, e confio no Jiu-Jitsu de nossa família”, disse o professor de 45 anos, sempre com um sorriso no rosto.

No ginásio, a produção acerta os últimos detalhes para a pesagem de hoje.

“Gostaria de convocar todos os praticantes de Jiu-Jitsu de Manaus para torcerem por mim. Peço que não vejam no dia da luta o Royler contra outro lutador, e sim Brasil enfrentado o Japão. A torcida local como a do país todo será fundamental para a minha vitória” disse o Gracie convidando para torcerem por sua luta final.

Royler mostrou ser fã dos peixes locais.

Royler, who arrived in Amazonas state early to get used to the hot and humid climate, said he’s ready for anything, as he gets ready for Amazon Forest Combat, where he will be having his final fight.

“Having my farewell fight in Brazil was a priority to me. Fighting here has a different feeling to it, especially in Manaus, one of the world’s greatest breeding grounds for MMA and, mainly, Jiu-Jitsu fighters,” the Gracie told Terra website reporter Eduardo Cruz. “The card exceeds all expectations. You can tell they’re investing heavily, bringing in a lot of people from abroad. My mind and body are in synch, in perfect working order. I had a good training camp in California and had the chance to train with a bunch of professional MMA fighters, even some from the UFC and Strikeforce.”

Amazon Forest Combat is set to go down at 8pm on September 14 at the Amadeu Teixeira Arena, a venue with a 12,000-spectator capacity. Mario Yamasaki will be head referee for the event.

Professor Royler has already set up shop in Manaus, where he’s staying at the sumptuous Tropical Hotel, which even features a zoo on the premises. The biggest beasts, however, can be found in the lobby. Check out the card released by the event’s promoters:

Royler, que chegou cedo ao Amazonas para se acostumar ao clima quente e úmido, se disse pronto para tudo, antes do evento Amazon Forest Combat.

“Me despedir no Brasil foi minha prioridade. Lutar aqui é uma sensação diferente, principalmente em Manaus, um dos maiores celeiros de lutadores de MMA e, principalmente, de Jiu-Jitsu no mundo”, disse o Gracie ao repórter Eduardo Cruz, do portal Terra. “O card está acima de qualquer expectativa. Dá para ver que há um investimento pesado, com muita gente de fora. Minha cabeça está em sintonia com meu corpo, funcionando muito bem. Treinei bem na Califórnia, tive a chance de treinar com diversos profissionais do MMA, inclusive do UFC e do Strikeforce”.

O Amazon Forest Combat está marcado para as 20h do dia 14 de setembro, na arena Amadeu Teixeira, com capacidade para quase 12 mil espectadores, arbitragem de Mario Yamasaki e com a estonteante Panicat Juliana Salimeni como ring-girl.

Professor Royler já está instalado em Manaus, no confortável hotel Tropical, que possui até mesmo um zoológico em suas dependências. As maiores feras, no entanto, estão soltas pelo saguão. Confira o card estelar anunciado pelos organizadores:
