Alliance Miami Kids and 2013 IBJJF Pan Kids

On the weekend of Feb. 9-10, GMA Alliance Miami had competitors and lots of success in three different tournaments all happening around the same time. The team competed at the WPJJC Trials in both Miami and Montreal, as well as the IBJJF Kids Pan American Championship.

At the Pan Kids, Alliance Miami’s Alex “Raffa” Couto and Luis “Macaco” Sosa both won their second gold medal as champion for the second year in a row. It was exciting to see two new faces on the top of the medal podium as well– Matthew Arias and Efrain Lezcano, both competing at the Pan Kids for the first time. Jan Paul Piniero took third in his division with a strong showing, solidifying the Alliance Miami Kids team as one of the best in the country.

In Miami, the team had stellar performances all around in the Abu Dhabi World Pro Trial. Eddie Dahbura, Manuel “Sonic” Losada and Kristy Price all took first in their weight classes. Sonic placed third in his open weight and despite being 135 pounds he submitted much bigger opponents but eventually lost to Dante Leon.

The Alliance Miami black belt and head BJJ coach, Javill Byron, jokingly said, “I had text messages and phone calls from three different time zones while trying to coach in another. I always travel with the youngest group so I was in California overseeing that tournament, but thanks to technology like Skype and FaceTime I was able to coach in three places at once.”

In Montreal at the WPJJC trials, the silent assassin Tammi Musumeci conquered. Coming off of her purple belt world title last year, she entered this tournament with one thing in mind: winning the trip to Abu Dhabi. Tammi won her weight division and then went on to win the open weight division to qualify for the Abu Dhabi trip. She is the first Abu Dhabi qualifier for team Alliance Miami. Alliance Miami Team at Pan Kids

GMA member team Alliance Miami is proving to be one of the premier BJJ schools in the Miami Area.

Fresh off of stellar performances last year with huge victories at the major competitions (Pan Ams, No Gi Pan Ams, World Championship, and No Gi World Championship); they return to prove themselves once again with the future starts at the recent Pan Kids tournament.

The results could not have been more thrilling with 7 competitors all making it to the podium for medals.

First up was 5 year old Luis “Macaco” Sosa with 3 tough matches to take gold in the Mighty Mite division.

Alex “Raffa” Couto also took gold in the Pee Wee 2 division beating the current champion from the previous year.

Janpaul Piñeiro was a fan favorite after being awarded the bronze medal in a tough match up with the current kid’s international world’s winner.

At the orange belt Teen level, Mikael Codinach finished with an impressive GI choke to take the gold while Christina Pellicio took second after winning her first match by armbar.

Alliance Miami excels at Jiu-Jitsu competitions

The final matches of the day were the green belt division where Eddy “Spiderman” Dahbura and Anthony Codinach took second respectively.

It was an overall a great competition for Alliance Miami; once again showing great competitors at the highest level of competition.

Over the past year; many have asked Professor Javill Byron about his teaching methods and why his student can perform of a grand stage.

His response was simple “I teach my students 2 things; Jiu-Jitsu and how to understand Jiu-Jitsu.  They have a better base that most students because I challenge them to understand why things happen the way they do.  Jiu-Jitsu man; I love it.”

Piñeiro, Losada, Mikey, Dan, Tammi

The GMA has a new member in Florida.

Alliance Miami is our newest associate school.

And with the welcome, we post the first news about the team lead by black belt Javill Byron.

The team travelled recently to California for the Worlds No-Gi championship, in Long Beach.

The results could not be better.

The school captured 5 world titles, what granted Alliance the 2011 juvenile division team title.

The champions are Manuel “Sonic” Losada, Dan Del Monico, Michael Musumeci, Tammi Musumeci and Jon Piñeiro.

Byron talked about his students’ achievements: “I am proud of the team for the success that we have had. I remember just one year ago when I opened my school, no one gave us a second look. Then we won the Pan, No-GI Pan, and then the Worlds GI and No-Gi. The system and methodology I have put into place for teaching Jiu-Jitsu is working, A special thank you to Moacir “Boca” Olivera, Master Fabio Gurgel, and Master Romero “Jacare” Cavalcanti as we strive to represent Alliance in Miami the best way possible.”
