Na véspera do feriado nacional da Independência, dia 6 de setembro, será realizada a quarta edição do Floripa Black Belt de Jiu-Jitsu, evento catarinense de lutas entre faixas-pretas que tem como diferencial a realização de seus combates em um palco atípico: o conforto do teatro.

A luta principal do evento será entre dois nomes em evidência no cenário nacional. Dimitrius Souza, fera da equipe Alliance, encara o experiente Alexandre de Souza. O confronto marca uma trilogia em terras catarinenses, já que existe uma vitória para cada lado em confronto direto.

Nas edições anteriores do Floripa Black Belt, Alexandre de Souza representou seu estado e não deixou Paulo Miyao nem Luiz Felipe Big Mac levarem o troféu do evento para fora de Santa Catarina. Agora, embalado pelos triunfos no peso e absoluto do Vitória Open e Curitiba Open, Dimitrius chega com tudo para vencer a trilogia e levar o troféu para São Paulo.

“O teatro é um local de valorização de arte, portanto nada mais justo que a arte suave esteja nesse ambiente”, deixam como recado os organizadores Ricardo Mello e Fernando Tuti.

O Floripa Black Belt IV será realizado no Teatro do Centro Multiuso de São José, na grande Florianópolis, a partir das 20h30.

Nearly all the pieces are in place for the next Copa Pódio event, featuring a Heavyweight Grand Prix certain to be a memorable one that includes some of the best under-98 kg fighters in the business.

Initially planned for the month of December, the event was transferred to January at some of the athletes’ behest. The chosen date is January 12, and the location will be confirmed in the coming days.

According to Jeferson Maycá, chief director of the Copa Pódio promotion, end-of-the-year events are more complicated.

“I think most athletes are used to competing during the first half of the year and dedicating the second half of the year to seminars and other activities. Soon, with other big events on the rise, we’ll likely have major tournaments year round. And that’s great for appreciators of find Jiu-Jitsu and athletes,” he explains.

Today the organization announced the supermatches and nine of the fighters comprising the Heavyweight Grand Prix, leaving a single berth empty for the surprise athlete who will be announced shortly. Could another absolute world champion show up in the mix?

Está quase tudo pronto para a próxima edição da Copa Pódio, que preparou um Grand Prix dos Pesados memorável, com alguns dos melhores lutadores até 98kg.

Inicialmente previsto para o mês de dezembro, o evento foi transferido para janeiro por solicitação de alguns atletas. A data escolhida foi 12 de janeiro e o local será confirmado nos próximos dias.

Segundo Jeferson Maycá, diretor da Copa Pódio, os eventos no final de ano são mais complicados.

“Acho que a maioria dos atletas já está habituada a competir no primeiro semestre e dedicar o segundo semestre a seminários e outras atividades. Em breve, com o surgimento de outros grandes eventos, a tendência é que tenhamos grandes competições o ano todo. E isso é ótimo para os apreciadores do Jiu-Jitsu e para os atletas”, explica.

A organização anunciou hoje as superlutas e os nove atletas do Grand Prix dos Pesados, deixando em aberto apenas uma vaga, que será uma grande supresa, e será anunciada em breve. Pode pintar outro campeão mundial absoluto?

Tarsis Humphreys in action at WPJJ tryouts in Gramado

He went nine months without doing Jiu-Jitsu, not even putting on a gi, because of an injured knee. After undergoing surgery in May 2011, the sweat Tarsis dripped was in the physiotherapy room.

Last weekend, still rusty, Tarsis resolved to stick his neck out at the Gramado, Brazil leg of tryouts for the Abu Dhabi WPJJC, to recuperate his confidence. Everything worked out just fine. In the under 92kg division he just missed winning gold, but still the Alliance ace was positive about his performance.

“I felt a lack of wind; but thank God I didn’t feel any injuries. Now it’s back to physical conditioning to get my strength back and not tire out so much, to make it back to the top,” remarked the black belt from São Paulo while in the VIP lounge at Porto Alegre airport.

“For the first time in a long while I totally felt the adrenaline starting with the first match on. Heavy legs… But the main thing was to recover my confidence in the movements,” explained Tarsis.

SOUZA DEFEATED TARSIS 4-0 IN THE FINAL

“I was really tired in the final against Alexandre Souza; my legs were spent. When he broke my grips to pass, I hung on however best I could. He stuck in the hooks and won by 4-0. In the semifinal with Alexandro Ceconi I was already starting to feel fatigue. When he applied pressure from the top, I put him in 50/50 guard and thought, ‘It’s in God’s hands now.’ I remembered how in Abu Dhabi he even passed Rômulo Barral’s guard—something almost no one manages to do. But my guard worked; I hung on and he didn’t pass, so I kept the score at 2-0,” he said, summarizing his assessment of what happened. (Watch the semifinal between Tarsis and Ceconi below.)

The champion, Alexandre de Souza, another missing from the competition scene as of late, commented on his win: “I felt some nagging injuries, but I’m doing a good job of picking the competitions I enter; that’s why people haven’t seen me competing lately. In the final I figured Tarsis was going to pull, so I won that one on pressure, breaking his grips and taking his back. I tried to get his neck but he defended well. Now it’s on to fighting for gold in Abu Dhabi in April,” said the trouts winner in celebration.

Foram nove meses sem treinar Jiu-Jitsu, nem tampouco vestir o kimono, graças a uma contusão no joelho. Após cirurgia realizada em maio de 2011, o suor de Tarsis foi derramado na sala de fisioterapia.

No último fim de semana, ainda pouco treinado, Tarsis resolveu lutar a seletiva de Jiu-Jitsu de Gramado para recuperar a confiança. Deu tudo mais do que certo. Na categoria até 92kg, apenas o ouro escapou, mas para o paulista da Alliance o saldo foi positivo.

“Senti o gás, mas graças a Deus não senti nada na contusão. Agora é voltar a fazer preparação física para recuperar a força e cansar menos, para voltar ao topo”, comentou o faixa-preta paulista, na sala VIP do aeroporto de Porto Alegre.

“Pela primeira vez em muito tempo, senti totalmente a adrenalina desde a primeira luta. As pernas pesadas… Mas o principal era recuperar a confiança nos movimentos”, explicou Tarsis.

“Na final com o Alexandre Souza eu estava bem cansado, com as pernas esgotadas. Quando ele arrebentou as pegadas para passar, eu já fui para me segurar do jeito que dava. Ele botou os ganchos e venceu por 4 a 0. Na semifinal contra o Alexandro Ceconi eu já estava sentindo a parte física. Quando ele começou a botar pressão por cima, eu pus na guarda 50/50 e pensei, seja o que Deus quiser. Lembrei que ele em Abu Dhabi tinha passado até a guarda do Rominho Barral, algo que quase ninguém consegue… Mas minha guarda funcionou, resisti na raça e ele não passou, e segurei o placar de 2 a 0”, resumiu. O campeão Alexandre de Souza, outro sumido das competições, comentou a vitória. “Eu senti umas contusões, mas na real estou selecionando bem as competições que entro, por isso o pessoal não tem me visto lutando. Na final eu imaginava que o Tarsis fosse puxar para a guarda, então consegui por pressão, arrebentar as pegadas e chegar às costas. Tentei arrochar o pescoço mas ele se defendeu bem. Agora é lutar pelo ouro em Abu Dhabi em abril”, comemorou o campeão da seletiva.

Alguns dos principais destaques do Jiu-Jitsu brasileiro já estão no Rio Grande do Sul, mais precisamente em Gramado, onde acontece a última seletiva sul-americana para o World Pro, evento organizado por Fernando Paradeda.

Entre as categorias da faixa-preta, o peso acima de 92kg é um dos que promete mais emoção. A categoria conta com atletas de história no Jiu-Jitsu como o bicampeão mundial absoluto Marcio Cruz, o Pé de Pano. Nela também estão pedreiras como Antonio Peinado, Luiz Big Mac, Igor Silva, Alexandre de Souza, Charles Cachoeira, Thiago Gaia e Cesar Tozi, entre outros.

“O peso ta cheio de grandes lutadores, mas também estou preparado. Assim que é bom!”, comentou Peinado.

No entanto, todas as categorias prometem grandes disputas. Foram vistos na pesagem, que aconteceu nesta sexta-feira, no Hotel Laghetto Siena, Bruno Malfacine, Antonio Carlos “Cara de Sapato”, Sérgio Moraes, Marcelo Uirapuru, Zé Carlos e Léo Nogueira, mas muitas outras feras estão inscritas.

One of Brazil’s main tourist destinations, Gramado, in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, is getting ready to receive some of the gentle art’s greatest stars on March 19 and 20, at the final South American qualifier for the Abu Dhabi World Pro.

“We already have a large number of participants, and a number of categories are near capacity,” says Fernando Paradeda, who is responsible for organizing the event via the company Abu Dhabi Pro.

Confirmed at the competition are black belts like Alexandre de Souza, Luiz Big Mac, Eduardo “Português” Santoro, Delson “Pé de Chumbo” Heleno and brown belt Herbert Mitchell Burns, Gilbert Durinho’s brother.

Um dos principais pontos turísticos do Brasil, Gramado, no Rio Grande do Sul, se prepara para receber algumas das maiores feras da arte suave nos dias 19 e 20 de março, na última seletiva sul-americana para o Abu Dhabi World Pro.

“Já contamos com um grande número de participantes e as inscrições, em muitas categorias, estão próximas do limite máximo de participantes”, conta Fernando Paradeda, responsável pela organização do evento através da empresa Abu Dhabi Pro.

Estão confirmados na competição faixas-pretas como Alexandre de Souza, Luiz Big Mac, Eduardo “Português” Santoro, Delson Heleno “Pé de Chumbo” e o faixa-marrom Herbert Mitchell Burns, irmão de Gilbert Durinho.

Tipped as one of the big names of the new generation of black belts, Rodolfo Vieira had to sit out some of the main competitions in 2010. A knee injury suffered during the World Pro qualifiers kept him out of the main event in Abu Dhabi, as well as other major IBJJF events, like the Brazilian Nationals, the Pan, and the Worlds. Focused on the coming year, Rodolfo just can’t stop training.

What are your objectives for 2011?

The first step is the World Pro tryouts. After that I’ll go to the Pan – I’ve already bought my ticket –, and I want all the important IBJJF titles. I really want the Pan, the Worlds, and the Brazilian Nationals – titles I don’t have yet as a black belt. Of course, if I get past the qualifiers, I really want the World Pro too.

What’s your assessment of your (superheavyweight) division?

It’s hairy, a lot of sinister guys. Bernardo Faria is on fire, but there are a lot of others, like Alexandre de Souza, Léo Nogueira, and even Xande Ribeiro, although he only competes at the Worlds. There’s a big group, all of them with a chance of winning the Worlds. I have to be well trained to win the heavyweight division. It’s rough!

With athletes so evenly matched in terms of conditioning and technique, what makes the difference in winning?

Everyone’s been training a lot, that’s the bare minimum. I feel what’s important is having your head in the right place. When it is, then you train well and compete happy. Sometimes, you’re well trained, but when the time comes you draw a blank and don’t yield half what you trained to do. You have to be happy.

Do you feel mature enough to win the absolute division at the Worlds like you did at the Rio Open?

I want that absolute more than anything! I’m training hard, and if I don’t break from rhythm, if no injury gets in the way, I feel I will have what it takes to take a stab at it. The absolute is a tough dream to fulfill, but it’s not impossible. I’m going to go for it, and God willing, I’ll do it.

Results aside, which are the fighters you like watching most these days?

Roger (Gracie) is definitely number 1. I’m a big fan of his. I like (Rômulo) Barral, a guy with an excellent guard and a good passer; I really enjoy watching him fight. I like (Rubens) Cobrinha and (Denilson) Pimento too, he’s way talented. Another one I really like watching is Bruno Malfacine.
