A Jiu-Jitsu black belt and promoter of the Desert Force MMA event, Jordanian/Brazilian Zaid Mirza wants to use his MMA event to scout talent in the Middle East.

Mirza’s idea is to promote a GP within the next installment of DFC, on March 31, exclusively for fighters from Middle Eastern nations, Iran, and Turkey.

“From the last installment we already got a sense that there are greatly promising fighters in the region. I want to make their promise into reality,” says Mirza.

One who has lent his support to the idea is Alex Negão, a Carlson Gracie black belt residing in Abu Dhabi, where he coaches Emirates Team for MMA.

“It was a great idea of Zaid’s. I’ve seen a lot of good kids around these parts. I believe that in three years we’ll be able to launch some of them on the professional circuit,” wagers Alex.

Zaid adds that he included Iran and Turkey because they are sporting powerhouses in the region and have a great tradition in combat sports, thus raising the bar of the technical level of the competition and opening the market up for a total of 24 nations.

But anyone led to believe Desert Force will be restricted to Middle Eastern fighters couldn’t be further from the truth. The event will have a permanent professional card with fighters from all four corners of the earth.

Faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu e promotor do Desert Force, o jordaniano e brasileiro Zaid Mirza quer usar seu evento de MMA para garimpar talentos no Oriente Médio.

A ideia de Mirza é provomer um GP dentro da próxima ediçao do DFC, no dia 31 de março, exclusivo para lutadores de países árabes, Irã e Turquia.

“Já pudemos sentir na primeira edição que a nossa região tem grandes promessas. Quero tornar estas promessas realidades”, diz Mirza.

Quem apoia a idéia é Alex Negão, faixa-preta de Carlson Gracie residente em Abu Dhabi, onde puxa os treinos de MMA do Emirates Team.

“Zaid teve uma excelente idéia. Tenho visto uns garotos muito bons aqui nesta área. Acredito que em três anos poderemos lançar alguns deles no circuito profissional”, aposta Alex.

Zaid acrescenta que incluiu o Irã e a Turquia por serem potências esportivas na região e terem muita tradição nos esportes de combate. Desta forma eleva-se o nível técnico da competição e abre-se o mercado para um total de 24 países.

Mas engana-se quem pensa que o Desert Force vai ficar restrito a lutadores do Oriente Médio. O evento terá um card profissional permanente com lutadores dos quatro cantos do mundo.

Negão, pay close attention to that kid. That pasty white one up front. He’s big, but he’ll turn sixteen this week.

You’re kidding me! Do they drink camel milk here, or what?

Faisal Souqi, a Jordanian blue belt of just sixteen years of age and 1.85 meters (6’1”) tall, is a calm kid on and off the mat. Off it, the boy is a bit introverted and extremely polite. On it, his nerves are unshakable. He took third at the last Abu Dhabi World Pro when he was fifteen.

Remind you of anyone? To Alex Negão, he does.

Dude, the boy reminds me of a young Roger. Even their games are similar. Imagine him at twenty, oh man.

Well, no one was up to par with “Roger of Jordan.” Even the hard-nosed military men succumbed to his simple and efficient technique. The boy reigned the under-92 kg division before the eyes of Prince Husein Mirza, who was attending the event, and the Abu Dhabi Sport TV camera broadcasting the tryouts to fifty nations.

When time for the final came, I switched spots with Alex as sideline referee:

Sorry, Negão, but I have to watch this one seated.

As expected, Faisal shot ahead in score and capped it off with an indefensible triangle. He then calmly left the mat, all set to stamp his passport for Abu Dhabi.

O treinador Alex Negão, do Emirates Team, foi até Amam para ser um dos árbitros. Lá chegando, foi chamado pelo também faixa-preta Zaid Mirza, organizador do evento. Eles então protagonizaram o seguinte diálogo:

– Negão, muita atenção naquele garoto. Aquele clarinho ali na frente. É grande, mas fez 16 anos esta semana.
– Tá de sacanagem. Aqui também bebem leite de camela?

Faisal Souqi, faixa-azul jordaniano de apenas 16 anos e 1,85m de altura, é um garoto tranquilo dentro e fora do tatame. Fora, um jovem um pouco introvertido e extremamente educado. Dentro, uma calma inabalável. Com 15 anos, foi terceiro lugar no último Abu Dhabi World Pro.

Lembra alguém? Para Alex Negão, sim.

– Cara, o menino parece o Roger mais novo. Até o jogo é parecido. Imagina ele com 20 anos, Nossa Senhora.

Pois ninguém também foi páreo para o “Roger da Jordânia”. Até os duros militares sucumbiram frente à sua técnica simples e eficiente. O garoto reinou na categoria até 92kg, diante do Príncipe Husein Mirza, presente no evento, e das câmeras da Abu Dhabi Sport TV, que transmite as seletivas para mais de 50 países.

Na hora da luta final, eu, que também era juiz, troquei de lugar com Alex, e fui ser juiz lateral:

– Desculpa, Negão, mas essa eu quero assistir de cadeira.

Como era de se esperar, Faisal aplicou um placar elástico, coroado com um indefensável triângulo. E saiu tranquilo como entrou no tatame, pronto para carimbar seu passaporte para Abu Dhabi.

Today São Paulo is one of the world’s major Jiu-Jitsu hubs not just in Brazil, but in the entire world. It wasn’t always that way, though. At a time when Rio de Janeiro dominated the gentle art scene, some brave fighters from São Paulo carved out space for themselves in the IBJJF competition circuit.

At the 1999 World Championship, for example, Eduardo Santoro won gold in the absolute purple belt division. In his second match he even submitted the reporter now writing about him! But his great achievement was in the final, against the gigantic Alex Paz (Carlson Gracie), aka. Alex Negão. On the occasion, Master Carlson even removed the referee from the mat so as to referee the match himself. In the end, victory was the Cia Paulista representative’s, which at the time was considered to be a great achievement.

Hoje São Paulo é um dos grandes pólos do Jiu-Jitsu, não apenas no Brasil, mas em todo o mundo. Entretanto, nem sempre foi assim. Numa época que o Rio de Janeiro dominava o cenário da arte suave, alguns bravos lutadores de Sampa buscavam espaço nas competições da IBJJF.

No Campeonato Mundial de 1999, por exemplo, Eduardo Santoro faturou o ouro no absoluto faixa-roxa. Na segunda luta, inclusive, finalizou o repórter que vos escreve! Mas, o grande feito foi na final, contra o gigante Alex Paz (Carlson Gracie), o Alex Negão. Na ocasião, o mestre Carlson, inclusive, tirou o juiz do dojô e fez questão de arbitrar a luta. Ao fim, a vitória foi para o representante da Cia Paulista, o que, na ocasião, foi considerado um grande feito.

He was a fixture at the grueling MMA training sessions at Brazilian Top Team, where he was a top-notch sparring partner for Minotauro & Co. He was a student of the late Carlson Gracie, with whom he lived while still a blue belt. And he always figured on the winners’ stand at the ADCC. A Jiu-Jitsu champion at nearly all belt levels. A former volleyball player for Brazil’s juvenile national team.

Yes, the giant Alex “Negão” Paz was a great exponent of Jiu-Jitsu early in the decade, but he went beyond that: he was a witness to all the behind-the-scenes action in world MMA. But what has he been up to, this figure who sticks out like a sore thumb for his 115 kg (253 lbs) spread over a 1.92-meter frame?

Living in Abu Dhabi for the last year, Alex oversees MMA training at Emirates Team and supervises Marcos Oliveira, Hassan Rumaiti, Michel Maia, Maiky Reiter among others. Considered the foremost authority of MMA in the Middle East, he tells what he’s been up to and breaks down the stage at which the sport finds itself in the region.

How did you end up taking up MMA again, here in the Emirates?
I met Maiki here, who came in from Holland, and when I laid eyes on him in training I knew he had enormous potential in MMA. Then we started training together, but with no set plan. That was when Hassan Rumaiti (Sheikh Tahnoon’s adoptive son), who was watching the training session, asked to start his training, as he was planning to make his debut in the style. After a few months he debuted victoriously in Holland. Sheikh Mohamad Bin Zayed was really happy and supported our training.

What is the make-up of the team in this style?
Besides the Brazilian fighters, we started with the second generation of Sheikh Tahnoon’s kids. There are about twenty youths between the ages of sixteen and eighteen. We also have fighters from other countries.

Is the MMA market in Abu Dhabi growing?
Not just in Abu Dhabi. Here we have a very well-structured event, the ADFC. In November we’ll hold one in Jordan where two or three of our fighters will be on the card. In January we’ll probably have another one in Egypt, where we’ll try and get our fighters in there, as well.

How is the team’s training going?
It’s been great to see. It’s been going off. Hassan, in particular, has made a lot of progress. And to work with guys like Marcão, Michel, Maiki and Luciano “Mutante”, who just arrived, has been a real pleasure. The kids are responding well to what’s demanded of them.

Aside from Hassan, are there any others from the region you feel are promising?
Khalid Walid of Syria and Gabriel Tayeh of Palestine should make their debuts in Jordan. A lot will be said about those two. Khalid is an excellent striker and Gabriel has really slick Jiu-Jitsu. We also have an excellent boxer, Ali Salem, who is Hassan’s brother, and there’s the heavyweight Yahya Mansoor, who is a local Jiu-Jitsu hero. Not to mention the pleasant surprises from the new generation Sheikh Tahnoon provided. There will be a lot of talk about them.

Anything else you’d like to mention?
I’d just like to give thanks to the people who taught me so much, like masters Carlson, Murilo (Bustamante), Ricardo Libório, Zé Mario, Bebeo, Cláudio Coelho and friends like Marcelo Palermo, Ovidio de Abreu and Felipe Bronze. And two the group at Emirates Team, mainly Jonver Bonini, Bruno Lopes, Orley “Tartaruga”, Oscar Junior and Marcelo “Guardinha” Motta, who always help out in training. And I’d like to thank the unconditional support and vote of confidence of Sheikh Mohamad and Sheikh Tahnoon for making it possible for us to carry out our work here in Abu Dhabi.

Ele foi personagem constante nos fortes treinos de MMA da Brazilian Top Team, onde figurava como um sparring de luxo de Minotauro & Cia. Sim, o gigante Alex “Negão” Paz foi um grande expoente do Jiu-Jitsu no inicio da década, mas foi além: um espectador de luxo dos bastidores do MMA mundial. Mas por onde anda esta figura facilmente notada pelos seus 115kg distribuídos em 1,92m de altura?

Morando em Abu  Dhabi há um ano, Alex é responsável pelo treinamento de MMA do Emirates Team e tem sob sua supervisão Marcos Oliveira, Hassan Rumaiti, Michel Maia, Maiky Reiter entre outros. Considerado a maior autoridade de MMA no Oriente Médio, ele conta “por onde anda” e analisa o momento do esporte nesta região.

Como você reiniciou o MMA aqui nos Emirados?
Conheci o Maiki aqui, que estava vindo da Holanda, e quando botei os olhos no treino dele, vi que tinha um enorme potencial no MMA. Daí começamos a treinar juntos, mas sem nenhum plano estabelecido. Foi quando o Hassan Rumaiti (filho adotivo do Sheik Tahnnon), vendo os treinos, pediu para iniciar seus treinamento, pois queria estrear na modalidade. Em poucos meses estreou com uma vitória na Holanda. Sheik Mohamad Bin Zayed ficou muito feliz e apoiou nossos treinos.

Como está composta a equipe nesta modalidade?
Além dos lutadores brasileiros, iniciamos com a segunda geração de filhos do Sheik Tahnnon. São cerca de 20 jovens com idade de 16 a 18 anos. Também temos lutadores oriundos de outros países.

O mercado de MMA está em expansão em Abu Dhabi?
Não só em Abu Dhabi. Aqui temos um evento bem estruturado, o ADFC. Em novembro, teremos um na Jordânia onde teremos dois ou três lutadores nossos. Em janeiro, provavelmente teremos um outro no Egito onde tentaremos colocar alunos nossos também.

Como estão os treinamentos do time?
Tá dando gosto de ver. O bicho tá pegando. O Hassan em particular evoluiu muito. E trabalhar com caras como Marcão, Michel, Maiki e o Luciano “Mutante”, que chegou agora aqui, é muito prazeroso. A rapaziada responde bem às exigências.

Fora o Hassan, você teria outras apostas na região?
Na Jordânia deve estrear o Khalid Walid pela Síria, e o Gabriel Tayeh pela Palestina. Os dois vão dar muito o que falar. Khalid é um excelente estriker e o Gabriel tem um Jiu-Jitsu muito apurado. Também temos o excelente boxe do Ali Salem, que é irmão do Hassan, e o peso pesado Yahya Mansoor que é idolo local do Jiu-Jitsu. Sem falar nas gratas surpresas desta nova geração que o Sheik Tahnnon nos disponibilizou. Vão dar o que falar.

Alguma consideração final?
Só agradecimento. Às pessoas que me ensinaram muito como os mestres Carlson, o Murilo (Bustamante), Ricardo Libório, Zé Mario, Bebeo, Cláudio Coelho e amigos como Marcelo Palermo, Ovidio de Abreu e Felipe Bronze. Aos componentes do Emirates Team, principalmente Jonver Bonini, Bruno Lopes, Orley ‘Tartaruga’ , Oscar  Junior e Marcelo “Guardinha” Motta que sempre ajudam nos treinos. But what our great motivator never imagined was that one of these boys would opt for another modality, MMA. GRACIEMAG.com caught up with Hassan al Rumaidi after his win at the new ADFC promotion last May 14 and  reveals what is going on in the head of the Arab Emirates’ first MMA champion.

Hassan, unlike your brothers, who stuck with the other styles, you opted for MMA. How did that come about?
Truth is I always liked Thai boxing, but when I was a kid my father thought it best I stick to grappling. In the last two years, though, I started practicing it and the guys realized I had a knack. A year ago Alex Negão and Maiky Reiter arrived here. They had MMA experience and so I started training with them.

You have three fights on your record: two in Holland and one in Abu Dhabi. Which of them do you feel was the most important?
All of them were fundamental, as I was just starting out, but it’s certainly the last one because it was in my country and because it was a big event. That is the most significant one so far.

Were you more anxious about that one?
Yes. But just because I was fighting at home and I wanted to live up to the public’s expectations. I feel really comfortable in the ring. I’m less anxious about it than I am at a judo or Jiu-Jitsu tournament.

What’s the next challenge awaiting you?
Every training session is a challenge. We have excellent fighters here who are helping me in training, which is getting tougher and tougher. Professor Cezário (Anderson Silva’s boxing coach) hung around here after the UFC to help us and we have really grueling training sessions every day. I know I’m just starting out and I have a ways to improve, but I’m confident I have the right people with me at the right place and time.

Is there anyone in particular you’d like to thank?
I’d like to thank His Highness Sheikh Mohamad bin Zayed for making the practice of sports by our people possible and Sheikh Tahnoon for always encouraging me and my brothers. I’d also like to thank my trainers and training partners, mainly Lifei Vali, who was the first to believe in my potential in this style. And I promise to do my all to open doors for others from my people to be able to get in the ring

Mas o que nosso grande incentivador talvez não imaginasse é que um dos garotos quisesse optar por outra modalidade, o MMA. O GRACIEMAG.com esteve com Hassan al Rumaidi  após sua vitória no novo show ADFC, realizado no dia 14 de maio, e revela como pensa o primeiro local dos Emirados Árabes campeão da modalidade.

Hassan, diferentemente de seus irmãos, que se mantiveram nas outras modalidades, você optou pelo MMA. Como isso aconteceu?
Na verdade eu sempre gostei muito de boxe tailandês, mas quando era garoto meu pai achou melhor que ficássemos restritos ao grappling. Mas há uns dois anos comecei a treinar e as pessoas repararam que eu levava jeito. E há um ano chegaram aqui o Alex Negão e o Maiky Reiter, que tinham experiência no MMA, e começaram a me treinar.

Você fez três lutas, duas na Holanda e uma em Abu Dhabi. Qual você vê como a mais importante?
Todas foram fundamentais, pois ainda estou iniciando, mas com certeza esta última, por ter sido no meu país e pelo tamanho do evento, foi a mais significativa até o momento.

Ficou mais ansioso?
Sim. Mas só pelo fato de estar lutando em casa e querer corresponder à expectativa do público. Me sinto muito à vontade no ringue. Fico menos ansioso do que num torneio de judô ou Jiu-Jitsu.

Qual o próximo desafio?
Todo treino é um desafio. Temos excelentes lutadores aqui que me ajudam nos treinos, que estão cada vez mais duros. Professor Cezário (treinador de boxe de Anderson Silva) ficou aqui depois do UFC para nos ajudar, e todos os dias tínhamos um treino bem puxado. Sei que estou começando e tenho muito que evoluir, mas estou seguro de que tenho as pessoas certas no lugar e na hora certa.

Algum agradecimento especial?

Quero agradecer a Sua Alteza Xeque Mohamad bin Zayed por viabilizar o máximo a prática de esportes pro nosso povo e ao xeque Tahnnon por sempre incentivar tanto a mim como meus a irmãos. E agradecer a todos os meus treinadores e colegas de treinos, principalmente ao Lifei Vali que foi o primeiro a acreditar em mim nesta modalidade. E prometo sempre dar o máximo para abrir portas para que outros do meu povo se habilitem a subir no ringue.

Anunciado para 10 de abril, o UFC 112 já contagia a população dos Emirados Árabes. Chamadas no rádio e na televisão estão sendo veiculadas o tempo todo, para lotar as dependências da Yas Island, local do evento e do circuito da Fórmula 1 em Abu Dhabi.

Além de contagiar o público, a chegada do Ultimate acabou por contagiar alguns lutadores residentes em Abu Dhabi. É o caso, por exemplo, de Marcos Oliveira, hoje no Emirates Team.

O lutador, que concorre à indicação de melhor atleta do ano pela Confederação Brasileira de Lutas Associadas (CBLA), intensificou seus treinos de MMA: “Fiz um grande cartel nos EUA, agora quero me testar no Oriente e vem até um pessoal de Dubai até aqui dar uns treinos.”

Outro que tem dado uma caprichada nos treinos é o gaúcho Maiky Reiter. Depois de temporadas na Tailândia e Holanda, o faixa-marrom tem alternado os treinos de Jiu-Jitsu esportivo com MMA. O mesmo faz Fernando Cosendey, que quer tentar uma boa colocação no World Pro Cup, evento que ocorre nas mesmas dependências do UFC, só que uma semana depois.

“O pessoal está energizado. Toda semana tem gente nova querendo treinar MMA e o dojô do Jiu-Jitsu está sempre lotado com o pessoal se preparando para o World Pro”, atesta Alex “Negão” Paz, veterano da BTT e atualmente radicado em Abu Dhabi.
