The Brazilian ADCC Trials 2017 took place in Sao Paulo this Saturday, and defined which Brazilians will attend ADCC Finland in September.

A superfight saw Viscardi Andrade start with a takedown on Erick Silva, which, according to the rules, was worth no points. After the first five minutes, points were on, and Erick managed to take the back and score three. Viscardi fought back, taking the back and making things level. With just seconds left on the clock, Viscardi sprung for the legs, achieved a takedown and won 5-3.

World BJJ champion Erberth Santos was upset via heel hook before even the semifinals began, in what was probably the biggest shocker of the day.

MEN’S

66kg – Pablo Mantovani (Guetho JJ) def. Henrique Gomes (NU) via choke

After a sequence of foot attacks by both, Mantovani mounted, attempted the kata-gatame and ended up achieving a choke from the back.

77kg – Felipe Costa (Barbosa JJ) def. Claudio Caloquinha (Gracie Barra) via decision

After an intense grip exchange, Felipe and Caloquinha attacked each other’s feet and legs on the ground. With an elastic, technical guard, Felipe attacked more, attempted a triangle and tightened Claudio’s arm. Though Claudio didn’t tap out, the judges considered him the loser.

88kg – Murilo Santana (Barbosa JJ) def. Valdir Araújo (Fight Sports) on points

Murilo worked his guard efficiently and reached the back, with a clear submission opportunity. Valdir did not give up — he defended well and managed to get free and attack toward the end, — but Murilo wound up with more points.

99kg – Mahamed Aly (BE One Ep JJ) def. Vinicius Gazola (Alliance) on points

Mahamed started fast with an early kimura attempt. With points being counted past the halfway point, Mahamed hurried to perform a takedown, and then retained control to win 2-0.

Over 99kg – Luiz Panza (Checkmat) def. Kitner Moura (Alliance) via triangle

Panza was trailing after he sat down without touching Kitner. The match went on with ground maneuvering, until Panza managed to sweep and land on the mount, scoring four points. Then he passed the leg and sank a triangle.

WOMEN’S

60kg – Bianca Basílio (Almeida JJ) def. Renata Marinho (Alliance) via choke

Renata started with a takedown, and Bianca worked well on the guard. As soon as the points were on, Bianca went to the back and choked out her foe.

Over 60kg – Talita Treta (Brotherhood) def. Andresa Correa (Alliance) on points

Andresa started the fight and sat down with no grips in place, giving herself the negative points that would make Talita the champion.

Talita Nogueira, better known as Treta, has figured at the main gentle art competitions for some time now. In 2011, in particular, the Ryan Gracie rep has been putting in great showings against some of the Jiu-Jitsu’s top female names. She qualified for the World Pro and now the ADCC. First, though, she is taking off in pursuit of medals at the Brazilian Nationals and World Championship.

What did you make of your performance at the ADCC trials?

It was great. I was a bit tired from all the championships I’ve been in lately. I really like fighting without the gi and thank God everything went well and I qualified (laughs)!

What are the challenges you expect to face at the ADCC?

There will be a lot of them; it’s a super important championship and one every fighter dreams of. So I’ll have to deal with the nervousness, adrenaline and responsibility, as well as the fact I’ll be competing abroad, which is something I’m not used to yet (laughs)! But those are things one must learn to overcome and I’m ready for the challenge.

You’ve been competing for some time now, but this season you’ve been appearing a lot. To what do you attribute this good run you’ve been having?

This year’s really been a good one for me, I’m managing to standout in the competitions I’ve entered. I feel it comes down to the great people I have by my side, the folks at the academy who are so dedicated to training, my family and my boyfriend, who support me so much, and mainly to my teacher Pitta – he works me hard and is always by my side; he’s very dedicated to his students. Having this support from my family and Ryan Gracie team is really important to me. It was also really important to have managed some of the sponsorship I did that helped motivate me to train and compete. Thank you, all of you who believe in me.

Will you be at the Worlds? What are the next challenges you will be facing and when do you start focusing your efforts on preparing for the ADCC?

I’m almost guaranteed to compete at the Worlds; I’m really focused and want to do well there, represent my team. But first I’ll compete at the 2nd stage of the São Paulo Circuit and the Brazilian Nationals. Then, after the Worlds, I’ll hang the gi up for a while to focus on the ADCC. If something comes up in MMA along the way, I’m in (laughs)!

One of the city of São Paulo’s top Jiu-Jitsu exponents, Augusto Ferrari was one of the standouts at the South American ADCC tryouts, winning the 99 kg division.

“It was really great, a fantastic event. The organization really treats athletes the way they should be treated! It was a wonderful, victorious weekend,” he remarks.

“I didn’t train specifically for the tryouts, since by focus was the IBJJF Brazilian Nationals, coming up May 14. So I went out there to compete with no obligation to win, I went in to keep up my regularity in competition, since there are no events of this scale in São Paulo – and I did great!” added the black belt.

There’s still some time to go, as the main ADCC event is in September. But Ferrari has already taken to planning.

“For the grand finale in England I’ll start No-Gi-specific training a few months in advance. I’m going to take it really seriously; I don’t want to let the opportunity of winning this event slip through my fingers.”

And the fighter is keeping a busy agenda:

“First I want to win the Brazilian Nationals next weekend. I’ll compete in the absolute division. Then I’ll travel to Germany and Denmark for some seminars, and perhaps I’ll compete around there too. In June, when I’m back in Brazil, I’ll take up training for the ADCC again and organize my annual event, the 5th Copa Shihan, in Guarulhos (São Paulo). At the end of the year, in November, I’ll put together the 1st Brussels Jiu-Jitsu Open in Brussels, Belgium. It’s been tough to reconcile so many activities with competition training, but through dedication everything is going well!” he says in closing.

The winner of the under-88 kg division at the Brazilian ADCC qualifiers, this year’s champion of the European Open, Pan and World Pro, Claudio Calasans has fulfilled a dream: he will enter the world’s most traditional no-gi grappling tournament this September in England.

How did everything go at the ADCC tryouts? I thought you’d be in the under-77 kg division, but you won the category above…

I had six matches, was well below the weight limit, at 82 kg. I thought it would made things hard on me, but it even felt better, because I was much quicker than my opponents. I won my first match, against Felipe Sagat (Alliance), by kneebar; my second was against Wesley Salatie, which I won by wrist lock; the third I won on points (4-0), against Bruno Alves (Gracie Barra); I beat Hilton Manoel (Check Mat) with a guillotine in the quarterfinals, then Cristiano Titi (Gracie Barra) by 1 to 0 in the semifinal; and in the final I beat Davi Vieira (Gordo) on points (10-2).

What did you make of your first time at an ADCC event?

I always dreamed of competing at the ADCC. I was overjoyed to have won the tryouts. It was a career goal and now I can go on to the next goal, winning the main event.

The World Championship is coming up. How are you preparing to compete both in and out of the gi, now that you’ve qualified for the ADCC?

Now my thoughts are only on the Worlds. After the Worlds, then I’ll talk to my team about how we’re going to train for the ADCC, but only after the Worlds will my mind be 100% on the ADCC. I’m going to do what I always do to get ready for competition: train a lot and be in the best shape possible – technically, tactically and physically. I also have to be keen to the rules, which are different from Jiu-Jitsu’s. There are holds you can’t do in Jiu-Jitsu. The scoring is different as well – meaning, I ‘ll have to study what I can or can’t do during a match.

As your priority is now the Worlds, how is training at your team going for this event?

The work we’re doing for the Worlds didn’t just start now, we’ve been at it for months now. Ever since the tryouts, I’ve been training at my academy in São José dos Campos with my training partners and students. Next week, on Monday, I’ll head to Atos headquarters in Rio Claro to join the rest of the team that will be competing at the Worlds, and our teacher, Ramon Lemos, and physical conditioning coach, Thiago Mendes. There’s also the folks that won’t be going to California but who will be training with us and helping us. I’ll train there for three weeks and then I fly to Long Beach. We’re training intense as always – that’s what sets us apart at events. We always get together to train, to help one another, everybody always together. One’s goal ends up being everybody’s, which is to give our best and win.

The black belts were two of the standouts at the South American tryouts for ADCC 2011, in Brazil. Bruno Fraztto won the under-66 kg division by beating Caio Izidro in the final, while Murilo Santana conquered his place in the main event for the second time by beating Antonio Roberto in the under-77 kg division.

Bruno Frazatto won the under 66 kg division at the South American qualifiers for the ADCC, last weekend in São Paulo. The Atos ace’s place at the main event next September in England is thus reserved.

“I felt really good in the competition; I had five matches and won three by submission, two by points. Thank God I managed to have an excellent campaign, fighting aggressively and on the attack,” Frazatto told GRACIEMAG.com.

“Training went great, that’s what made me totally secure at the competition. When I arrived in Abu Dhabi I had a chat with Ramon Lemos and my teammates to figure out whether I’d have enough time to prepare, and they gave me their complete support. As I only had two weeks to train, we picked a number of situations I would carry out and Ramon guided my training as best possible. The two weeks of training and physical conditioning with Professor Tiago Mendes were intense. Without everyone’s help, none of it would have been possible,” the fighter adds.

And Frazatto is still at it. Now he’s getting ready for the upcoming IBJJF events: the Brazilian Nationals and the Worlds.

“I’m already back in Rio Claro, at Atos headquarters, and I’m focusing on my next targets: the Brazilian Nationals and the Worlds. I’m getting prepared with my team and coaches so I’ll be in the best shape possible. I thank God, my whole team and my sponsors for the support,” he says in closing.

President of the ADCC Lefterious Magriopolous invited the highly decorated Gabrielle Garcia (+60 kg) to be a part of ADCC 2011 in England this September. Thus the fighter, who was unable to participate in the South American qualifiers for the event, is in. The same invitation was awarded Rodolfo Vieira, who in São Paulo ended up losing to Augusto Ferrari.

“I won the Abu Dhabi Pro this month and got injured; that’s why I wasn’t at the tryouts, but I’m already recovering and I’ll head to New York to train with Marcelo Garcia and get ready. I’m overjoyed: the ADCC is the only title I haven’t conquered yet,” said the winner of the World, Pan, European and World Pro championships.

This year the qualifiers are being broadcast on the website http://www.portaldojiujitsu.com.br/. Broadcast of the semifinals and finals will begin at 11 am Brazilian time (GMT -3).
