Um dos campeões mais completos e respeitados da história do MMA, o canadense Georges St-Pierre construiu uma história gloriosa no UFC.

Contudo, antes de se consagrar e se tornar um campeão dominante no octógono, St-Pierre se aventurou nos tapetes inóspitos do ADCC. Numa dessas, o canadense de mente aberta foi surpreendido por um faixa-preta brasileiro no ADCC 2005, disputado na tradicional Pirâmide de Long Beach, na Califórnia.

Nas quartas de final da categoria até 77kg, o já tarimbado Léo Santos surpreendeu GSP, de 24 anos, com uma técnica rara que arrancou um vendaval de aplausos do público presente no ginásio.

O atleta da Nova União encerrou sua participação com o quarto lugar na categoria. Na semifinal, o peso leve que atuou no UFC foi derrotado em luta equilibrada pelo craque Marcelo Garcia, que momentos depois se sagraria bicampeão do evento.

Vibre com Roger Gracie x Ronaldo Jacaré no ADCC 2005

Faixa-preta da Gracie Barra e hoje lutador do One FC, Roger Gracie já fez muito barulho nas competições de Jiu-Jitsu.

Em 2005, por exemplo, o Gracie fez uma campanha perfeita no ADCC, em Long Beach, na Califórnia.

Roger finalizou todas as suas lutas entre a categoria acima de 99kg e o absoluto – com direito a vitórias contra Xande Ribeiro, Fabricio Werdum e Shinya Aoki, entre outros monstros.

Na final do aberto, Roger pegou as costas e finalizou o duríssimo Ronaldo Jacaré, que havia vencido a divisão até 88kg.

“Estou contente por ter finalizado assim, finalizei todos os oponentes. Não sei se eu sou o melhor do mundo pois ainda estou longe do meu auge”, disse o campeão, humilde, após o confere.

“Uma excelente luta, entre dois lutadores excelentes. Nesse mesmo ano eu ganhei o Mundial na azul, e assisti ao Cobrinha lutar. Eu já sabia que ia lutar com ele anos depois, só não esperava que seria tão rápido. Em 2006 eu ganhei na azul e ele na preta, em 2008 eu ganhei na marrom e fui graduado faixa-preta. A lição é que é preciso se ligar na molecada que vem das outras faixas, porque em pouco tempo eles serão nossos adversários.”

“André é sem dúvida um dos melhores lutadores de Jiu-Jitsu de todos os tempos, luta bonito, finaliza, é completo. Mas o que mais admiro nele, e podemos ver isso claramente nessa luta, é como ele não tem medo de arriscar posições. Ele é ousado nos movimentos e isso faz a diferença. Nessa luta, ele pula por cima da guarda do Rodolfo encaixando uma kimura e pega as costas, um movimento que não é preciso somente treinar, é preciso muita ousadia para arriscar no meio de uma luta entre atletas de alto nível.”

“Das vezes em que vi meu professor Ramon competindo, acho que esta luta é uma das que mais me lembro o quanto comemorei. Ramon sempre fez muito bem essa raspagem atacando o braço. Nos treinos era difícil demais defender, lembro que éramos faixas-azuis e ele nos colocava para repetir esta posição inúmeras vezes. “An excellent match between two excellent fighters. That very year I won the Worlds at blue belt, and I got to watch Cobrinha compete. I already knew I’d face him in the years to come, I just never thought it would be so quickly. In 2006 I got my blue belt and he got his black; in 2008 I got my brown and then black. The lesson is that you have to keep your eyes on the kids coming up from other belts, because in a short while they’ll be your opponents.”

6. ANDRÉ GALVÃO VS. RODOLFO VIEIRA (ADCC TRYOUTS 2009)

André is without a doubt one of the best Jiu-Jitsu fighters of all times; he fights pretty, goes for the submission, is well rounded. But what I admire about him most, and which we can see in this match, is how he’s not afraid to go out on a limb. He’s daring in the moves he makes, and that makes the difference. In this match, he pulls guard on Rodolfo while sinking a Kimura and taking his back, a move that doesn’t just require training, it requires daring to risk doing that in the middle of a match between high-level opponents.”

7. RAMON LEMOS VS. RODRIGO FEIJÃO (COPA DO MUNDO 2006)

“Of the times I’ve seen my teacher, Ramon, competing, I think this is the match where I celebrated the most. Ramon always was good at this sweep to armbar. In training it’s way hard defending against it. I remember when we were blue belts and he’d make us repeat the position countless times. After this match, we practiced it knowing just how effective it is…”

Kimura tips from American ADCC king

The USA’s Dean Lister, a former UFC fighter, has always been a force at the ADCC with his deadly foot attacks. After winning the 2003 installment of the event, in Brazil, Lister got the best of Jean-Jacques Machado at their subsequent supermatch in 2005. And the black belt came up spades again this year, winning his division in England, leaving favorites like Rodolfo Vieira and João Assis in his wake – both succumbing to his foot attacks.

But Lister’s game doesn’t boil down to just foot and leg locks. In the video below, Lister demonstrates some tricks to the kimura hold.

O americano Dean Lister, ex-lutador do UFC, costuma fazer bonito no ADCC, com ataques de pé fatais. Depois de ganhar o absoluto em 2003, no Brasil, Lister foi o melhor na superluta de 2005, contra Jean Jacques Machado. Nesta temporada, na Inglaterra, o faixa-preta foi campeão mais uma vez, tendo deixado pelo caminho favoritos como Rodolfo Vieira e João Assis, ambos finalizados com ataques nos pés.

Mas não são apenas chaves de pé e perna as finalizações do campeão. No vídeo abaixo (em inglês), Lister mostra os seus macetes para a chave Kimura.

Undefeated since 2007, Weapon X wants gi win in 2011

Yes, 2010 has been Pablo “Weapon X” Popovitch’s year. He won the 2010 Pan-American No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu Championship in New York both in his division and in the absolute (he closed out the division with teammate Marcus Bochecha), he was Copa America No-Gi and Gi absolute Champion, he won the Grapplers Quest – UFC Expo superfight against Lucas Lepri (Lepri just won the lightweight division at the 2010 No-Gi Worlds) in Boston, and he won the huge VIC tournament in Europe, both in his division and in the absolute. He fought eight matches in one day. “I fought from 2 p.m. until midnight,” he says.

Popovitch made his professional MMA debut as part of the co-main event against Jeff Savoy at Rock and Rumble 3 at Florida’s Hard Rock Hotel, winning via TKO in the 2nd Round. “I took his back and started punching him in the face,” he says, “He tapped during my striking. I broke his orbital bone.”

Another big accomplishment this year was being inducted into The Grappling Hall Of Fame By the North American Grappling Association, N.A.G.A. “It’s a huge thing,” he says, “They contacted me about it and I was so honored.”

Popovitch is also the inspiration behind his and Cyborg Abreu’s new Jiu-Jitsu team, The Avengers. They have about fifteen black belts training together, including Rodrigo Cavaca’s CheckMat team, called The Armory, who train with them as well about two or three times a week. The team they’re all building together is becoming a superpower on the tournament circuit. Because of this, in these tournaments, when they all rise to the top together, he says they have to be humble and give each other credit. “You can’t win by yourself,” he says, “You have to help each other out.”

And help each other out is what they did at the 2010 No-Gi Worlds. After winning gold and world champion status in his middleweight division, Popovitch then closed out the absolute division with Cyborg and Marcus Bochecha, and Cyborg took the title. “I love those guys,” he says, “We make it fair for everyone.”

Popovitch has been undefeated since 2007. Since 2003, he’s lost only twice and both times were to Marcelo Garcia, once in 2005 and once in 2007. In 2009, Popovitch was able to beat Garcia at the ADCC. “I hope to face him again in 2011,” Popovitch says, “He is my toughest opponent ever. I love competing against him. I love the challenge. He lets me know how far I’ve come in my game. He makes me work really hard.”

As for his undefeated record, Popovitch says he needs to reflect on what it means to him because it may cause him to hold back on his Jiu-Jitsu when he could throw himself into it more. “Being undefeated, I think about my record,” he says, “I try to transfer it into training harder. Anyone can make a mistake and get caught. Some matches I think I could do more but I don’t because I want to keep the record going. It does take away from my Jiu-Jitsu in tournaments for sure. In some matches I could really let it go but I play it safe, so as not to fall into danger. Jiu-Jitsu is like a chess match. You make a mistake, you lose. I just try not to put that much pressure on myself.”

At the No-Gi Worlds, Popovitch looked calm and composed. He had three matches in his division. He won his first match on points. In his second, he faced Murilo Santana of Barbosa JJ, and won on points. “He’s really tough,” Popovitch says.

In the finals, Popovitch squared off with Daniel Moraes of Relson Gracie in a very exciting display of Jiu-Jitsu. “He’s super tough,” Popvitch says, “He’s a four-time world champion. I took him down, took his back, and almost choked him, but he defended.” The two stood up and Moraes pulled guard. “I passed and was able to take his back twice during the match,” Popovitch says. The match ended with Popovitch pulling off a 6-0 victory.

In the absolute, Popovitch had two matches before closing out the division with his teammates. His first fight was with Ben Baxter, whom he submitted with a choke. In his second match, he took on Gracie Barra’s Flavio Almeida and beat him 2-0 with a takedown.

Then Cyborg, Cavaca, Bochecha, and Popovitch conferred at the edge of the mats and, while there was a lot of talking and laughing going on, it was obvious that it was tough for him to take the “loss” they had agreed upon. But Popovitch smiled as he stepped onto the mats and let his friend and teammate Bochecha take the win, who in turn gave it to Cyborg. “I don’t like to lose at anything,” he laughs.

Popovitch wants to dedicate his win to his parents. “They’ve always supported me,” he says, “My dad’s a black belt, too. I’ve been doing Jiu-Jitsu since I was four years old.” Many may not know that Popovitch is cousins with some of the Gracie’s and grew up in Brazil living the Jiu-Jitsu lifestyle. “It gave me a lot of confidence,” he says.

Tired from a long year of competing, Popovitch says he needs a break, but he’s going to come out strong in 2011. “My goal for 2011 is to win every single gi and no-gi tournament.” With his above-average strength, speed, dedication, and focus, along with a near-perfect record, “Weapon X” should have no problem attaining those objectives.
