Was Buchecha right to pull out of the 2016 WPJJC?

Yes, you can say that. As he won double gold in Long Beach, you can say it was a good move to pull out of the World Pro if he felt he was not at 100%. His performance in Long Beach showed a Buchecha with lots of drive and completely confident in his rebuilt left knee.

Is Leandro Lo unbeatable in his weight class?

He seems to be as he won five world titles in five years. Not just that, Lo also does a lot of damage in the open class. This year, he made his way once again to the semifinals beating Keenan Cornelius, Gustavo Elias, among others.

Is Dominyka the best female black belt today? 

Yes, she is. You don’t become a back to back black belt open class world champion out of luck. Dominyka mixes strength, pressure and unusual technique to dominate her opponents. She beat Venla Luukkonen 33-0 in the superheavy final and beat Mackenzie Dern and Bia Mesquita on her way to the absolute gold medal.

Will the new generation steal the spotlight?

Well, not yet. Erberth Santos, Edwin Najmi, Gabriel Arges, João Miyao, Marcio Andre and others had great showings, but there was no changing of the guard at the 2016 Worlds. Big names like Bruno malfacine, Rafael Mendes, Lucas Lepri, Marcus Buchecha and Andre Galvão held on to their posts and added one more title to their belts.

Will Americans make a dent in Brazil’s domination? 

No. The fact is Brazil has a century of history with Jiu-Jitsu, as the USA is still in their twenties. The gentle art has been popular in America since the early 90s, so there hasn’t been enough time for the pool of talents to become big enough to challenge Brazil’s incredible capacity of coming up with new top competitors. This year, Brazilians won the open class divisions in all belts, male and female, except the female blue belt and the female black belt.

Will another team dethrone Alliance in the male adult division? 

No. With each year that goes by, Alliance’s dominance seems stronger. This time, it was a true blow out, as Alliance scored 26 more points than second place Checkmat and third place GF Team together.

Buchecha vs. Erberth at the 2016 Worlds

Marcus Buchecha did not have a good year in 2015. The low point was the serious injury sustained at the quarterfinals of the World championship, when the ligaments of his right knee gave out.

Surgery followed and doctors told him it would be at least 12 months until he would be able to compete at the highest level again. Months of rehabilitation and would be necessary and Buchecha thought many times he would never be the same again.

Cut to this past Sunday, June 5, 2016. There are less than 30s left on the clock and Buchecha was just swept by Erberth Santos and the score is 4-4 in points and 1-1 in advantages. Buchecha will not allow the referees to decide who’s going to be the 2016 black belt open class world champion, so he sweeps right back and scores the winning two points to make the final score 6-4.

Two days later, he talked about what happened in the pyramid: “I still don’t quite realize what happened. I did something no one has ever done before. I never thought I would get this far. I have never trained to break records, but since the injury I had last year a lot of things changed in my head and in my Jiu-Jitsu. Today I think my game is more precise and I have more pressure. I am very happy and with a great felling of accomplishment. I was able to overcome all the hurdles and achieve something really unique.”

One issue in everyone’s minds when it came to Buchecha was whether he was going to be able to compete at the same level as before the injury. He proved he could, but he had to work hard to be able to do it. “The doctors told me at least a year to be back at 100%. i did everything right to be able to shorten it to 10 months. In Abu Dhabi, I was still feeling insecure, so I decided to hold back and focus on the Worlds. It worked.”

The only competitor to have four titles in the black belt open class division at the Worlds says he’s not done yet. “I have eight titles as a black belt and I am only 26. A lot of people thought I was done and that the new generation would sweep everything, but i showed that I can still compete on the highest level. My future is an unwritten book, but I believe that next year I’ll be at the Worlds once again.”

Once again, the black belt finals were the highlight point of the World Jiu-Jitsu championship.

And it was one really for the books.

First of all, Marcus Buchecha wrote a new chapter in Jiu-Jitsu history by winning an unprecedented fourth black belt open class title. He has now 8 gold medals overall as a black belt and is at a hand’s reach of Roger Gracie’s record of 10 titles.

Day 3 of the 2016 World Jiu-Jitsu championship defined the four people who will fight ofr the ultimate glory in Jiu-Jitsu.

in the male black belt open class, Marcus Buchecha is back for his fourth final in five editions since 2012. He’ll face Erberth Santos in his debut in the open class final.

Buchecha beat Eliot Kelly 6-0, then caught Pedro Moura’s arm and repeated the finish against Felipe Pena. After beating Keenan Cornelius in the quarterfinals, Leandro Lo gave way to Buchecha in the semifinal due to a neck injury.

Erberth debuted in the open class against Felipe Bueno, winning 4-0 with a back take. Then he had a tough match against Luiz Panza, winning 1-0 on advantages after a 8-8 tie on points. The quarterfinal was against Romulo Barral, beat 11-2. Erberth made his way to the final with a lightning fast attack to Bernardo Faria’s arm to get the current champion out of the game.

In the female division, Dominyka Obelenyte made her way to her second black belt open class final in a row after a convincing 6-4 win over Mackenzie Dern. She will face Bia Mesquita in her return to the open class final after 2014. Bia beat Andresa Correa 10-0 in the semifinal.

Day 3 also defined all the women’s black belt weight classes finals.

The second day of matches at the 2016 World Jiu-Jitsu championship had the open class divisions of the purple belt as highlights.

Vicotr Hugo Marques made to the top of the male purple belt division with two gold medals. First he won the superheavy and then marched to the final of the open class against Fabio Alano. One sweep was enough for Marcques to secure the gold medal.

In the female division, Gabrielle MCcomb Lima first won the featherweight and then went on to finish Amanda Cintra very early into the final with a impressive bow and arrow choke.

The Friday also had the female blue belt division, won by Amelia Lui, who outscored Jocelyn Stidham 4-0 for the title. Lui finished second in the heavyweight division.

Another important part of the day was the drawing of the black belt open class brackets, both for the male and female divisions.

The year was 2005 when a new face appeared in the middleweight division. From the camp of Fernando Tererê, a young and talented André Galvão confirmed the great results he had in the colored belts and debuted with another gold medal.

Eleven years later, Galvão is now a three-time world champion (2005, 2008, 2014), a team leader for Atos JJ and mentor of countless competitors out his academy in San Diego. Even so, he’s ready to go once again. He reveals what makes him still want to step n the mats of big events like the Worlds: “I like to train and compete a lot and now with my students, it’s a extra motivation. I feel great to represent my team  and give my best. I also like to test my Jiu-Jitsu and I do that with pleasure and dedication.”

The new roles in his life could represent more pressure on Galvão, as he’s not competing by his own anymore. He also talks about how he handles the responsibility of being a role model for his students. “I feel no pressure at all. I wouldn’t be here if I felt any pressure to compete. It’s something I really like to do.”

So, how is Galvão for the 2016 World? He says he’s never been better. “The work is done. I had a great camp with my teammates in San Diego. I guess experience helps a lot too, as it allows me to have a bit more control over my feelings and reactions. My goal is to win, as always, but also I want to to have good fights.”

The black belt division kicks off this Saturday, June 4, with the male and female open class and the early rounds of the weight classes.

The first day of action at the 2016 World Jiu-Jitsu championship featured lots of thrills in over 12 hours of Jiu-Jitsu at the Long Beach Pyramid.

The main attraction was the adult male blue belt division, but juvenile and master white belts also took to the mats to pour their hearts out in search of the much wanted gold medal.

In the blue belt division, Guigo Jiu-Jitsu’s Luis Eduardo do Carmo was the stand out after all was said and done with a double gold campaign. Duzão first won the ultra-heavy division after six matches, then he went for the open class title.

In the absolute, Do Carmo had five more matches and made his way to the top of the podium with five submissions. In the final, he caught Mauricio Oliveira Neto with an americana lock from side control.

After his second podium ceremony, Duzão was graduated to purple belt by his Professor Guigo.

The male adult purple belt division started out this Thursday with two divisions, the roosterweight and the light-feather. Rubens Cobrinha’s son Kennedy Maciel won his first title in the Worlds as an adult when he managed a last-second sweep on Jonata Ramos.

Buchecha vs. Faria at the 2013 Worlds

The 2016 World Jiu-Jitsu championship kicks off this Thursday at the Walter Pyramid. In the next four days, the best grapplers in the world will fight for the ultimate glory in the gentle art community.

After all champions are crowned, the Jiu-Jitsu environment will be reshaped. We have lined up 10 questions the action at the Worlds could answer until Sunday.

1. Who’s the king of the hill? 

Bernardo Faria wants to join the select group of two-time open class champions. Buchecha wants to make history with an unprecedented fourth open class gold medal. Felipe Pena wants to consolidate his name as one of the greatest with his first absolute triumph. Trans wants to become the first non-Brazilian to win the open class. And there’s also Erberth Santos, Mahamed Aly, Keenan Cornelius, Leandro Lo…. The 2016 Worlds open class division could be one for the history books.

2. Who’s the queen of the land?

Dominyka is healthy once again and ready to defend her crown. Andresa Correa wants to keep her perfect record and win the unprecedented grand slam in the black belt. Mackenzie Dern already said she’ll never stop trying to win the absolute. Bia Mesquita wants her third gold medal to reign over the division in history. And there’s also Michelle Nicolini in her goodbye run, Monique Elias, Fernanda Mazzelli and many others.

  3. Who is currently the best black belt roosterweight competitor?

For the first time. the lightest division will gather the three most important names of the weight class in recent years. Bruno Malfacine, Caio Terra and João Miyao will battle for the gold medal in what is expected to be a thrilling series of matches. Terra, absent in 2014 and 2015, is back to try to win his third gold medal at the Worlds in the gi as a black belt. João is still after his first title after two silver medals in the last two years. Malfa wants his 8th title to consolidate his name as the greatest name in the division of all times.

4. Can the new generation of American black belts finally make a dent in the Brazilian domination?

Keenan Cornelius is the senior member of this very tough group of black belts. Edwin Najmi, JT Torres, AJ Agazarm, Michael Liera, Jon Satava, Gianni Grippo, Dillon Danis, Mansher Khera, Michael Musumeci, Isaac Doederlein, Brian Mahecha and a few others have all the tools they need to write their names in history. The sheer number of high level black belts make it more probable than ever to have a non-Brazilian at the top of one of the black belt divisions.

5. Will the new generation steal the spotlight in Long Beach?

2016 could be a year marked by the changing of the guard. Mahamed Aly, Erberth Santos, Isaac Doederlein, Mikey Musumeci, Mansher Khera, Dillon Danis, Jon Satava, Edwin Najmi, Luan Carvalho, Jhonny Souza, among others, will be in the mix to represent the newest generation of black belts and possibly steal the show from the household names.

6. Could anybody bud in and prevent a Rafael Mendes vs. Rubens Cobrinha final for the third time in a row in the featherweight division?

Rafa and Cobra already met in 4 finals since 2010 and were the finalists in the past two years. This time, Marcio Andre is a strong contender to be in the mix and have a go at the final. Samir Chantre and Osvaldo Moizinho also would love to be in the spotlight. Could anyone else do it?

7. Will Alliance once again reign supreme in the teams podiums?

The eagle has been soaring untouched in the past 10 years in Long Beach. Fabio Gurgel, Jacaré, Gigi and their crew have stacked up 8 adult male titles in 9 events in the USA. Will Atos Jiu-Jitsu, Gracie Barra, Checkmat, Cicero Costha or any other be able to put a dent in Alliance’s almost perfect record?

IBJJF Awards ceremony in 2014

The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation will be hosting an Awards Ceremony this Tuesday evening, in Irvine, California.

The event will celebrate the best competitors of the 2015/2016 season and also induct four of the most important names in Jiu-Jitsu history to the IBJJF hall of fame.

The top ten athletes in the adult male and female black belt rankings will receive awards.

The event will also feature a dinner for the athletes and its guests.

The Awards ceremony will be streamed live on Flo Grappling.

The IBJJF has released the official brackets for the 2016 World Jiu-Jitsu championship.

The event is scheduled June 2-5, at the Long Beach Pyramid, in California.

A quick look at the brackets allows us to imagine the pathway each athlete will have to travel on their way to the gold medal in each division.

Roosterweight: As expected, seven-times world champion Bruno Malfacine is on one side of the bracket while the two other most important names in the division are on the other side. Caio Terra and João Miyao could face each other in one semifinal, which would be the first time Terra fights a Miyao. Bruno could face Rafael Freitas or Jose Thiago Barros, or even Ivaniel Cavalcanti on the other semifinal. If Caio and Malfa meet in the final once again, it will be their 6th final since 2009. If Malfa and Miyao meet again, it will be their 3rd straight final since 2014.

Lightfeather: 2015 champion Paulo Miyao tops one side of the bracket and could face either Mikey Musumeci, Luis Felipe Pinto, Daniel Beleza or Isaac Doerderlein in one semifinal. On the other side of the bracket, Ary Farias and Gianni Grippo could meet in the semifinal, but Hiago George, Milton Bastos and Gabriel Moraes want to bud in as well.

Feather: Naturally, Rafael Mendes and Rubens Cobrinha are on opposite sides of the brackets and could only meet in the final. To get there, Cobrinha could have Megaton, Samir Chantre, Bruno Frazzatto or Marcio Andre. Rafa, on the other side, could have to face Leo Saggioro, Brian Mahecha, Osvaldo Moizinho or Isaque Paiva. If they meet in the final, Rafa and Cobra will have their 5th battle for the gold medal at the Worlds. Augusto Tanquinho was the only other athlete to be able to make to the featherweight final since 2010.

Lightweight: Michael Langhi and Lucas Lepri are once again on opposite sides of the bracket. Langhi could face Kevin Mahecha, Gabriel Rollo, Rafael Barbosa or Rodrigo Freitas on his way to the semifinal. His opponent in the semifinal could be Michael Liera or Edwin Najmi. Lepri could face Mansher Khera or AJ Agazarm, Roberto Satoshi or Thiago Abreu for his spot in the semifinal. JT Torres could face Renan Borges, Luan Carvalho, Marcelo Mafra or Francisco Iturralde before facing Lepri for a spot in the final.

Middleweight: The most populated division has four brackets and the champion of each one will qualify for the semifinals. Otavio Sousa, Jon Satava, Dillon Danis, Victor Silverio and Guto Campos will most probably fight for one spot. One of them will face the winner of bracket 2, a mix of Yago Souza, Magid Hage, Alan Nascimento, Vitor Oliveira and Johnny Souza. Bracket 3 features 2015 champion Claudio Calasans, Celsinho Venicius, AJ Souza and Gabriel Arges. One of them will most probably face the winner of bracket 4, featuring Victor Estima, Marcus Tinoco, Ricardo Rezende and Vinicius Marinho, among others.

Medium-heavy: Leandro Lo earned a by and could face Matheus Diniz on his way to the semifinal. Keenan Cornelius could meet Lo in the semis after possibly facing Gregor Gracie and Renato Cardoso. The other side of the bracket features Romulo Barral, who could face Murilo Santana or Lucas Barbosa on his way to the semifinal. Tarsis Humphreys could face Inacio Neto and Patrick Gaudio before facing Barral.

Heavyweight: André Galvão is on one side of the bracket and could face Felipe Mota, Lucas Rocha and Cassio Francis on his way to the final. On the other side, Felipe Pena could face Jackson Sousa and then battle Erberth Santos for a spot in the final.

Superheavy: If Bernardo Faria wants to meet friend and teammate Leo Nogueira in the final once again, he’ll have to face Alex Cecconi and then Igor Silva or Rodrigo Cavaca. Leo, on his side, could face Vitor Toledo and then Lucio lagarto, Guybson Sá or Luiz Panza.

Ultraheavy: 2015 champion Gabriel Lyrio could face Mahamed Aly and then Roberto Cyborg or Ricardo Evangelista on his way to a new final. On the other side, three-time champion Marcus Almeida could face Dany Guy or Gustavo Elias and then most probably Alex Trans or João Gabriel Rocha to get to the final.

FEMALE

Roosterweight: 2015 light-feather Rikako Yuasa wants her second gold medal, this time as a roosterweight. She could face Marcela Lawton or Sofia Amarante on her way to the final. Kanako Inaba could face Serena Gabrielli and then Bruna Nascimento for the final.

Light-feather: Gezary Matuda could face Ariadne Oliveira in the semifinal. On the other side, Patricia Fontes and Kristina Barlaan could battle for the second spot in the final.

Feather: 2015 champion Mackenzie Dern could face Karen Antunes in one semifinal while Michelle Nicolini and Tammi Musumeci could battle for the other spot in the final.

Light: Bia Mesquita could face Marilia Conceição or Laurah Hallock on her way to the final. Sarah Black could face Jena Bishop or Gegi Walker for her spot on the final.
