The son of Carley Gracie and grandson of Carlos Gracie Sr., Clark had a great moment at the 2013 Pan.

With sharp omoplata attacks, he nabbed the middleweight division.

Watch him submitting Marcelo Mafra in the final, one of the most thrilling matches of that championship.

To celebrate the date, here’s a video of this fierce competitor fighting Eduardo Telles at the Senior 1 black belt open class final of the 2013 Pan.

It was one of the most memorable moments of this year’s Pan.

Medium-heavy champion André Galvão, through his Social Media channels, exposed the letter he received from anti-doping agency USADA.

According to the strict agency who was able to put even Lance Armstrong on the ropes, the Jiu-Jitsu representative was clean while competing at the tournament.

Buchecha vs. Galvão

Marcus Buchecha is the 2013 Pan absolute black belt champion.

He defeated Andre Galvão 4-2 in the final this Sunday.

The match was fought at full speed by the two black belts.

Buchecha had this comment about it:”Galvão was an amazing adversary. Today I said to him the same thing I said the first time we fought and he won. I said ‘Andre it is always a pleasure to fight you. I’m a big fan! It was an honor! Thank you very much'”

Buchecha went ahead in the scoreboard with a sweep, then Andre tied with another sweep and Buchecha responded with a third sweep for the final numbers.

The champion now is thinking about the World Championship, in late May, but before hi has the WPJJC, in Abu Dhabi.

“There’s not much time to celebrate and to rest. Soon I’ll be back to training”.

Rafael Mendes beat Rubens Cobrinha by refs decision after a 2-2 tie to win the featherweight.

Michael Langhi is the lightweight champion in a close out with Lucas Lepri.

Clark Gracie beat Marcelo Mafra with a lapel choke to win the middleweight.

Andre Galvão is the medium-heavyweight champion after close out with Guto Campos.

From 9AM to almost 11PM, hundreds of blue belt and purple belt competitors proved that Jiu-Jitsu’s future will be as healthy as the present.

First it was time for the weight divisions of the adult blue belt, male and female.

Dominic Pica

It was still morning when Dominic Pica (Gracie Elite) started writing the first chapters of his perfect Thursday.

The 21-year-old had to fight six times in the heavyweight division to reach the gold medal.

Tuff luck for his opponents, once Pica was merciless and got the submission in each and everyone of his matches.

Then, in the absolute, another stroll in the park for Dominic in five matches, all ending with submissions.

The last tap came from Danton Leon (Ribeiro JJ), when Dominic twisted his ankle at the very end of the fight.

All of that with only 8 months of training.

Tara White

Also in the blue belt, the name of the female division was Tara White (Jiu-Jitsu League).

She dominated the bracket to win the gold in four fights and two submissions.

In the final, Tara defeated Veronica Galindo (GB), with one takedown.

Training Jiu-Jitsu for 10 months now, the 27-year-old, also won the the heavyweight division.

Also this Thursday, the adult male purple belt went to action.

The favorites were up to the challenge and walked out with gold medals around their necks.

That was the case of Marcio Andre (Nova União), Michael Liera (Alliance), Timothy-Michael Spriggs (Team Lloyd Irvin).

Sofia Amarante and Miriam Cerqueira are the favorites in a four-person bracket. Amarante wants to keep her title from last year.

Luiza Monteiro is almost a sure presence in the final. Her opponent will be either Mackenzie Dern or Nyjah Easton. At the 2013 European, last January in Lisbon, Dern defeated Easton for a spot in the final.

Tracey Goodell is back and wants to repeat at black belt the success she had in the lower belts. It’s up to her and Fabiana Borges to prevent a close out between Ana Carol Vidal and Beatriz Mesquita, both from Gracie Humaita.

Gabi Garcia is the favorite, but who will be her opponent?

Mario Reis

Being part of the Alliance team for two years, three-time world champion (2003/04) Mario Reis will join another big event for the eagle team, the IBJJF Pan. “I’m feeling very well for this Pan. I started my preparation with my students in Porto Alegre, and one month before the competition I came to Los Angeles to prepare myself with my partner, friend and great professor, Rubens Cobrinha.” said Reis in chat with GracieMag.com.

“To get to this Pan well prepared, I think my great quality is an offensive Jiu-Jitsu, always eyeing the submission, but I must also know how to play with the rules. I need to control my emotions, and also the willingness to try to submit all the time, because sometimes the boldness and ambition can do harm within ten minutes of fight. Be more strategic at times is also important,” he added.

As for the featherweight, one of the busiest of the tournament, Reis declared, “I think the featherweight category is always very dangerous, full of great champions and newcomers. It has always been a division in which the athletes are very technical, fast and strong. It’s always very nice to see.”

The athlete praised the novelty of the drug test in the black belt. “It’s a very big step in Jiu-Jitsu, as it will even the fights more and also make the result fairer. And the main thing: it will help to preserve the athletes’ health. Of course the physical fitness and strength are important in competitions today, but Jiu-Jitsu will always be the gentle art,” he concluded.
