Primeiro, devemos entender a posição.

Gabriel conquistou o bronze no American National deste ano – Foto: arquivo pessoal

The post Gabriel Panizza consolida trajetória internacional e busca consagração no IBJJF World Master first appeared on Graciemag.

Gabriel Machado Panizza’s Jiu-Jitsu journey has been built through different stages, from his early years competing in the West Zone of São Paulo to establishing himself as a high-level athlete on the international scene. Now representing RMNU, the Brazilian is in his first year as a black belt and has already achieved significant results in competitions in the United States, including a title at the Tampa International Open and a third-place finish at the IBJJF American National, as well as other podium finishes at Opens.

Gabriel Panizza’s consistent participation in competitions such as the Pan American Championship, American National, World Master, Fight to Win and IBJJF Opens in the United States, combined with his results as a black belt and his position in the organization’s rankings, further highlights a competitive career built within an international-level circuit.

His first experience on a major international stage came in 2019, when Gabriel competed at the IBJJF World Championship as a purple belt. During that period, he also trained in the United States and was exposed to a more professional approach to high-level competition.

“The 2019 World Championship was an experience that really changed the way I viewed the highest level of competition. I realized it wasn’t just about training harder. There was a lot of attention to nutrition, recovery, breathing, physical preparation, specific training, strategy and mindset. It opened my eyes,” he says.

Gabriel is experiencing his first year as a black belt, achieving titles, podium finishes, and setting new goals on the world stage – Photo: IBJJF

After a knee injury kept him away from competition, Gabriel gradually returned to the competitive circuit. His comeback also brought changes to his style of Jiu-Jitsu, with a greater emphasis on control and efficiency. His partnership with Jiu-Jitsu legend Robson Moura became part of this new phase. Under the guidance of the five-time world champion, Gabriel says he developed a more technical and strategic approach to his game.

“Training with Robson Moura made me pursue a more technical and strategic style of Jiu-Jitsu, using less energy and making better decisions during the match. Today, I feel that I’m consolidating movements and positions that I’ve been developing since my colored-belt days.”

Black Belt debut comes with a title

Receiving his black belt from Robinho in 2025 marked a new chapter in his career. Gabriel did not have to wait long to achieve his first major result at the new rank, winning the IBJJF Tampa International Open. “Winning my first tournament as a black belt was very special. Your debut is something you always remember, especially when you win the title right away in your first competition here in Tampa,” he says.

The athlete also earned a victory at Fight to Win, an event with a different format from traditional IBJJF tournaments, and began facing opponents with extensive experience on the international circuit. “These results don’t make me think, ‘I’ve made it.’ Quite the opposite. They gave me confidence to understand that I can compete at this level, face strong athletes and continue building my place among the top names in the division.”

Gabriel Panizza was the champion of the IBJJF Tampa Open – Photo: personal archive

The results continued in 2026. Gabriel earned a bronze medal at the American National and added other podium finishes in IBJJF competitions. In the September 2026 ranking update, Gabriel was ranked 63rd among 319 athletes in the Master 1, black belt, middle-heavyweight division.

More than just individual results, Gabriel has been consolidating an international career, with recurring appearances and strong results in high-level competitions. The current phase is also marked by the high level of competition in the Master 1 division. “The level in Master 1 today is very high, and that makes the challenge even more motivating,” he says.

Among his next major goals is winning the IBJJF World Master in a future edition, while also increasing his participation in No-Gi events and competing in different tournaments across the United States. “My main goal now is to establish myself more and more among the top athletes in my division. I want to keep showing up to training, consolidate my game and, most importantly, be able to reproduce in competition what we build every day at the academy.”

Little by little, the journey that began on the mats of São Paulo’s West Zone is gaining new chapters on the international stage. For Gabriel, however, reaching the black belt is far from the end of the road. “Today, the goal isn’t simply to participate. I want to keep evolving until I’m able to compete for the biggest titles in the division,” he concludes.
The post Gabriel Panizza builds international career and eyes breakthrough at the IBJJF World Master first appeared on Graciemag.

Master Roberto “Gordo” and Professor Lucas Gripp recently demonstrated how the same half-guard situation can lead to different solutions based on control, the opponent’s reaction, and decision-making.

In Jiu-Jitsu, knowing a technique is only one part of the learning process. It is essential to understand the position, identify the available controls, and recognize how the opponent reacts. This idea is demonstrated through a sequence of training situations at Gordo Jiu-Jitsu in Weston, Florida.

The situations begin from a similar position: the athlete on top is facing a half-guard, while the opponent underneath is looking to control the movement and recover guard.

First, understanding the position. In the first moment, Gordo demonstrates the top position in half-guard with Lucas underneath. Rather than simply trying to free the trapped leg, he explains the importance of controlling the lower part of the opponent’s hip and the leg involved in the half-guard.

The idea is to create a kind of “top half-guard,” using these controls to limit the opponent’s movement and make it more difficult for them to recover a full or closed guard.

Then, Gordo uses the same principle to demonstrate a guard pass. The situation shows how a concept can be transformed into a concrete action: control the position, limit the opponent’s options, and then advance into the guard pass. For Lucas, this connection between concept and technique is fundamental to teaching. “When the student understands why they are controlling a particular area, they can adapt that knowledge to other situations.”

This is where one of the most important principles of Jiu-Jitsu becomes evident: the opponent’s reaction can completely change the next decision. “The position is similar, but the opponent’s reaction changes everything.

If they give us a different control, we need to recognize the opportunity that reaction creates.” The three moments demonstrate a simple progression: understand the concept → apply the control → adapt to the reaction.

For Lucas, this ability to read the position is what transforms technical knowledge into actual Jiu-Jitsu. “The more you understand Jiu-Jitsu, the less you think only about isolated techniques. You begin to see the relationships between positions. One reaction creates an opportunity, and that opportunity leads to a new decision.”

On the mat, more important than memorizing movements is understanding why they work—and knowing when to change direction when the opponent changes the problem.
The post From concept to adaptation: how positional awareness transforms Jiu-Jitsu, with Roberto Gordo first appeared on Graciemag.

By Pedro Oliveira — September 25, 2026

From the quiet streets of southern Brazil to the relentless pace of New York City, Thiago Saldanha has emerged as a standout black belt in the ranks of Renzo Gracie Academy. Both a fierce competitor and a thoughtful teacher, he is shaping athletes inside one of the most iconic academies in the world.

What sets him apart is not only his success on the mats—winning IBJJF titles and testing himself against elite no-gi specialists—but also his ability to communicate the deeper meaning of the art. Whether guiding students through complex positions or developing practical applications of Jiu-Jitsu for law enforcement, Saldanha embodies the belief that martial arts extend far beyond competition.

In this exclusive GRACIEMAG interview, the black belt reflects on his mentors, the energy of New York, and the lessons that have defined his path. His words carry the weight of experience and the clarity of someone determined to inspire the next generation.

GRACIEMAG: Every great tree has deep roots. Who were the teachers that shaped your Jiu-Jitsu, and what’s the biggest lesson you learned from them?
THIAGO SALDANHA: I believe you are the product of the environment you live in. I had the chance to train with brilliant minds in the sport, but without a doubt, Master Renzo Gracie and Professor Rafael Natal taught me to approach Jiu-Jitsu in a more methodical way. At times I used to overtrain, thinking volume was everything, but they showed me that true learning isn’t just about grinding through hard sessions.

Talk a bit about being a Jiu-Jitsu fighter in New York. How does the energy of such a powerful and unique city, a global reference in so many fields, shape your mindset as a martial artist?
It’s no exaggeration to say New York is the capital of the world—Wall Street, sports, culture, everything connects here. It’s the epicenter of pressure and opportunity at the same time. Training at Renzo Gracie Academy means you’re constantly evolving. You’ll see UFC fighters walking in weekly to sharpen their skills, and that makes your own journey easier because you’re surrounded by the very best.

How do you balance the daily grind of teaching at a top academy with the physical and mental preparation required of a high-level competitor?
Over time you learn that balance is the key. I usually dedicate my mornings to personal training and physical conditioning—that’s my athlete time. In the afternoons I teach private lessons, and evenings are for group classes. What makes this routine effective is that I test new techniques in the morning, then bring that feedback straight to my students later in the day.

What’s the motivational phrase you repeat to yourself when facing tough moments in your career?
“Become who you are.” It’s a line from the German philosopher Nietzsche, and also a tribute to my sister, who holds a PhD in philosophy and encouraged me to seek knowledge early on. For me, it means that no matter the adversity, you must stay true to your plan and your purpose.

What are the highlights of your competitive career, and what did you learn from battling in the big BJJ arenas?
Since moving to the U.S., I’ve focused more on no-gi, which is a big emphasis at Renzo Gracie Academy. I’ve won several IBJJF titles as a black belt, including the American Nationals—where I took gold in the absolute—and silver at the Pan Ams. Facing elite no-gi specialists pushed me to see where I needed to improve. I believe competition is the ultimate lab to test both your technical and psychological limits.

What’s the secret to turning an average student into a champion?
Every practitioner, athlete or not, must understand why they’re making a certain move. Communication is our greatest tool. A strong critical grasp of positions accelerates technical growth. In competition, where countless variables hit you at once, clarity in attack or defense makes all the difference.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received in your career, and how did it change your life?
The best advice I ever heard: nobody is going to do it for you. I grew up in a very small town in southern Brazil. I hadn’t even been on a plane until I was an adult. I never had formal English classes—I learned by listening to American music as a kid. That taught me the world won’t wait for you to dream. You have to show up with your best every day, and then come back tomorrow to do it again. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing.

What tips do you give to those who dream of becoming a successful Jiu-Jitsu teacher or athlete outside Brazil?
First, master communication—the world demands it. Second, pursue academic qualifications. When I was a purple belt, I balanced full-time training with college until I graduated with a degree in Physical Education. Third, innovate. Here in the U.S., I identified a real need and created a Jiu-Jitsu–based de-escalation and control method for police officers, focused on immobilization without excessive force. That positioned me not only as an athlete but as a professional contributing to the community. Maximize your strengths, and opportunities will follow.

Atualmente, o atleta representa a Gracie Barra Lavras.

The post Turris Invitational: 103 competições, uma virada e um novo desafio no Jiu-Jitsu first appeared on Graciemag.

Before titles and recognition, there is work that happens away from the spotlight: finding talent, creating opportunities, and preparing athletes to compete at the highest level. This is where Márcio “Zaca” Oliveira built an important part of his Jiu-Jitsu career.

The Brazilian coach was involved in the early stages of Dream Art, which would later become an important team in the competitive Jiu-Jitsu scene. His story began while he was working at Alliance Brooklin in São Paulo, where he ran a project for young athletes from underserved communities, offering scholarships and finding support to help them train and compete.

During this time, Zaca introduced Isaque Bahiense to businessman Warley Pimentel. According to Zaca, after a meeting he organized, support was created for around ten athletes, providing housing and the conditions they needed to focus on training. That partnership helped give rise to Dream Art.

From Dream Art to Developing New Talent

As the team grew and more high-level adult athletes joined, Zaca saw another opportunity: finding talented young athletes before they became well known on the competition circuit.

That vision led to Projeto Yuu, a project focused on identifying, developing, and creating opportunities for young athletes. The goal was to build a pathway from discovering talent to training and competition, eventually giving these athletes the chance to reach bigger teams and opportunities, including Dream Art.

Among the athletes who worked directly with Zaca are Kleber Barboza, Sabrina Lourenço, Bruno Marlon, and João Pedro. Other athletes he worked with continued their careers in Jiu-Jitsu, MMA, or became coaches themselves.

Nesse processo, a Rio Fighters e o mestre Miltinho Vieira tiveram papel fundamental.

The post Pai e filhos lutam no mesmo card e protagonizam feito raro no mundo das lutas first appeared on Graciemag.

Só podia me defender, agarrar e finalizar. Sempre treinei assim.”

The post Os treininhos de Jiu-Jitsu nos tempos do jovem ídolo Carlson Gracie first appeared on Graciemag.
