After a year and a half away from BJJ competition, Yuri Simões called 2021 “a year of overcoming.” First he had to deal with the losses at the start of the year so that right in the following months, he could achieve one of the greatest strings of victories of his career.

The owner of two ADCC gold medals, in the 88kg and 99kg divisions, Yuri soared in the last three months, accumulating wins in Fight to Win, BJJ Stars and Raw Grappling Championship—the latter giving him a nice trophy after he won thrice in the same night, including the final against Patrick Gaudio.

“I began the year with defeats in grappling after almost a year and a half away from competitions”, he says. “I had to get past my best in each training session; I had to rub the rust off the armor and polish my weapons! With each loss, I progressively got better and returned to the competitor I am, until the first win of the year came against a top-ten competitor, then I got another five wins. In total, I’m coming off of six consecutive wins, with four of them against athletes who are in the top ten of the world. Today I feel like I’ve arrived at my best version and I am certain it was well worthwhile to believe in me even when many did not. It’s necessary to persevere and battle until the end! I’m ready for a historic 2022.”

After the strong phase, Yuri went to teach BJJ around the world. In recent weeks, he went to Abu Dhabi, UAE to teach the tricks that enabled him to win some of the world’s most important tournaments.

“It’s impressive how Jiu-Jitsu is so popular here. It’s hard to talk to someone here who doesn’t know what Jiu-Jitsu is. They have many gyms and thousands of students, not just in Dubai, but in all of the Arab Emirates. I’ve always loved traveling and I’m really grateful for the opportunities that Jiu-Jitsu has given me and for all the countries and amazing people I’ve been able to get to know through this sport! Traveling opens up our mind, allows us to discover other cultures. For us athletes, traveling also allows us to learn different methods and styles of training, among many other forms of learning. I try to absorb each trip I go on to the utmost and I also always try to pass the maximum I can in terms of my knowledge on to the people who share the mat with me on these trips,” he said.

Yuri confirmed that he will be taking part in the next edition of the ADCC Worlds, set to take place on the 17th and 18th of September in Las Vegas.

“I will fight for sure. I have big plans in relation to the ADCC; I still can’t talk about the category in which I’ll be fighting, but I can guarantee that, God willing, I will be there in 2022 fighting for the double gold!”

Before finishing the interview, Yuri talked about his situation regarding One Championship. He has only appeared in one event by the Asian organization to this day:

“I asked many times to fight in One, but got no answer. I’ve lost count of how many times I requested a fight. I’m ready and I continue to train. I hope I fight in 2022. If it’s not with One, then with another outfit, because I can’t bear to wait any longer. People always ask me when my next fight is; it looks bad because it seems like I’m the one who doesn’t want to fight! People who truly know me know that fighting is part of my identity. So, in this year of 2022, I hope not only to have grappling matches, but at least a few MMA fights as well.”

Às vésperas da quinta edição do BJJ Stars, o evento anunciou uma mudança em seu elenco de atletas. Mahamed Aly, que participaria do GP de pesos pesados, contraiu o coronavírus e está fora da disputa. Em seu lugar, a organização definiu o ingresso de Yuri Simões na corrida pela premiação de 100 mil reais.

Yuri Simões, bicampeão do ADCC e campeão mundial sem kimono, volta a vestir o paletó de algodão para se jogar na disputa. Com estreia recente no MMA, Yuri traz novas surpresas para seu jogo no Jiu-Jitsu e pode embolar ainda mais a disputa do GP, que já conta com feras como Felipe Preguiça, Erberth Santos, Nicholas Meregali, Lucas Hulk, Luiz Panza, Gutemberg Pereira e Erich Muniz.

A quinta edição do BJJ Stars rola no dia 6 de fevereiro, em São Paulo. O torneio não contará com a presença do público devido ao cenário pandêmico, mas estará disponível através de pay-per-view no www.bjjstars.tv. Em visita aos estúdios de GRACIEMAG, logo após conquistar o TUF Brasil 3, Antônio Carlos “Cara de Sapato”, faixa-preta campeão do Pan da IBJJF, mostrou que não tinha abandonado seus treinos de kimono, e aproveitou para ensinar uma de suas posições preferidas da guarda fechada.

Com Yuri Simões como sparring de luxo, Cara de Sapato mostrou sua transição de seis pontos, raspando e caindo direto na montada. Para tal, Cara de Sapato coloca a mão por baixo da coxa de Yuri, e usa a pegada cruzada para desequilibrar o adversário com a perna batendo na axila do mesmo. Em seguida, após puxar a perna de Yuri para si, Cara de Sapato usa o embalo da volta e gira o corpo pro lado oposto, subindo com a mão no tatame para montar. Caso o oponente não tombe, ainda vale a opção de finalizar no triângulo.

Campeão de duas categorias do ADCC, em duas divisões diferentes, Yuri Simões parte para sua terceira edição com a mira fixa em fazer história. Após estrear no Abu Dhabi Combat Club em 2015 e faturar a divisão até 88kg, o atleta da CTA retornou com ouro em 2017, na Finlândia até 99kg. Seu foco agora é na divisão acima de 99kg, contra os maiores e mais pesados competidores do evento.

Em conversa com GRACIEMAG, Yuri revelou seus planos para o torneio que rola na Califa, nos dias 28 e 29 de setembro, as motivações para pular de uma categoria para outra e o que esperar de seus duelos contra nomes de peso no Jiu-Jitsu sem kimono, como Buchecha, Gordon Ryan e outros. GRACIEMAG: Qual a motivação para ir subindo de categoria e buscar desafios ainda maiores no torneio?

YURI SIMÕES: A motivação é fazer história. Dediquei a minha vida inteira ao Jiu-Jitsu, com e sem kimono. Quero um dia poder me aposentar e ter certeza absoluta de que dei o melhor na minha carreira como competidor. O Jiu-Jitsu é a minha vida, eu sempre vou estar motivado em fazer algo que eu amo.

Ser um veterano do ADCC deve ter suas vantagens. Ainda dá um frio na barriga de competir no formato deles?

Sim, mas pra mim isso é completamente normal! Eu acredito que só não não fica nervoso aquele que não se importa tanto com o resultado. O grande lance é se você vai perder o controle, ou deixar o “nervosismo” e a adrenalina te dominar ao ponto de atrapalhar o seu desempenho. Quanto ao fato de ser veterano e isso ajudar, tento não pensar muito por esse lado por que não quero jamais me acomodar. Se for pra me acomodar prefiro nem lutar! Eu treino e penso como se esse fosse ou meu primeiro ADCC, é preciso ter muita fome de vitória.

Buchecha, Cyborg e Kaynan são craques da categoria. Qual o adversário mais perigoso na sua chave?

Eu acho que seria injusto apontar um cara em uma chave onde todos estão 100% qualificados para estarem ali, a maioria dos atletas da minha chave já conquistou pelo menos alguns títulos de peso no esporte. No mais todo mundo que compete sabe muito bem que nenhum oponente jamais deve ser subestimado. Eu acho que o que vai fazer a diferença é o coração e a vontade de vencer na hora.

A estratégia e conhecimento da regra sempre estiveram ao seu lado. O Caio Terra segue com o caderninho estudando tudo?

Com certeza, isso sempre ajuda! O Caio é um perfeccionista nessa parte de estratégia e regras.

Outro que está inscrito e pode fazer uma revanche com você é o Gordon Ryan. Qual o caminho pra bater o americano no jogo sem kimono?

Quer mesmo que eu revele a estratégia antes da luta? Vocês podem esperar apenas muita vontade de eu ser campeão novamente.
