UFC Fight Night 29’s Jake Shields’ Jiu-Jitsu is undoubtedly some of the best in the UFC and MMA as a whole. In one of his more entertaining fights, Shields fought judo expert Yoshihiro Akiyama and won a unanimous decision.

Unable to make the impact in the UFC welterweight division he would have liked to, Jake Shields is now toying with the idea of returning to the middleweight division, where he had a long run beating top-flight competition. “It’s something I’ve thought about before and I was thinking about it [before] this fight, but they offered me this fight [and] I took it. Especially with my teammate, Nick Diaz, challenging for the welterweight title, it’s definitely in the back of my mind going up to 185 [pounds],” the black belt is quoted as saying on the MMAWeekly.com website.

At middleweight Shields won the Strikeforce title and even beat the likes of Dan Henderson and Jason Miller. At welterweight he didn’t see the same fortune, struggling to eke out a split decision over Martin Kampmann, losing his title bid to Georges Saint-Pierre, and losing to Jake Ellenberger by TKO.

A Cesar Gracie student and training partner to Nick and Nate Diaz, Shields sees a move up as a way to avoid not putting a strain on his longtime friendships. “I’d fight sparring partners, but [Nick and I] are different. We trained together for, like, 11 years; so it’s a little different. We’re not just casual sparring partners. There’s a big difference,” he says in the same article.

Shields’s next date in the octagon comes at UFC 144 against judo stylist Yoshihiro Akiyama, who will be making his welterweight debut. The event will be held February 26 at Japan’s traditional Saitama Super Arena, and the main event is a thrilling lightweight title showdown between champion Frankie Edgar and Ben Henderson. Sem conseguir despontar na categoria dos meio-médios (77kg) do UFC, o americano Jake Shields já cogita subir de peso e retornar para os médios, divisão em que fez sucesso. “É algo em que eu estava pensando antes desta luta contra o japonês Yoshihiro Akiyama, mas me ofereceram e eu peguei. Especialmente com meu colega de time Nick Diaz lutando pelo título da categoria, passa definitivamente pela minha cabeça subir para os médios”, disse o faixa-preta ao site MMAweekly.com.

No peso até 84kg, Shields conquistou o cinturão do Strikeforce e chegou a superar Dan Henderson e Jason Miller. Já subindo na balança com 77kg, não conseguiu embalar. Suou para vencer Martin Kampman por decisão dividida, e foi abatido por Georges St-Pierre e Jake Ellenberger.

Aluno de Cesar Gracie e companheiro de treino de Nick e Nate Diaz, a amizade é antiga e a mudança de categoria evitaria o confronto indesejado. “Eu lutaria contra sparrings de treino, mas com Nick é diferente. Treinamos juntos por 11 anos. Não somos só companheiros de treino casuais. Fomos faixas-brancas juntos, viajamos o mundo todo e tivemos lutas juntos. Existe uma grande diferença”, concluiu.

O próximo compromisso de Shields no octagon é contra o judoca Yoshihiro Akiyama, que faz sua estreia pelo UFC 144. Since the beginning, UFC president Dana White has been saying the promotion will return to Japan. And now there’s a date for that to happen; it’ll be on February 26 at the traditional Saitama Super Arena. In 1997, the UFC bought Pride FC, which sealed the fate of the Japanese organization that made history early in the century. Since then, despite MMA still having a passionate following in the Land of the Rising Sun, the sport has been on a decline in the country. Could an event from the UFC change that story around?

Whether it happens or not, it’s still too early to know. But the formula UFC parent company Zuffa has come up with for the event seeks to identify with Pride lovers. It should be a nostalgic night.

At the post-UFC Rio press conference, Rodrigo Minotauro, who fought for the first time ever in Brazil, commented on a possible return to Japan, the place where he was catapulted into stardom.

“Now it’s time to rest, and – who knows? – maybe I’ll get to fight February in Japan,” said Mino.

Besides Minotauro, other stars from the late Pride FC event may put in appearances, such as Wanderlei Silva, Mirko Cro Cop and Quinton Jackson. Of course, there are plenty of Japanese fighters on the UFC roster who could see action, like Yushin Okami, Hatsu Hioki, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Takanori Gomi and Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto.

Desde o início do ano, Dana White, presidente do UFC, confirmara a volta da organização ao Japão. E o evento já tem data para acontecer, vai ser no dia 26 de fevereiro, na tradicional Saitama Super Arena.

O Ultimate comprou o Pride no que selou de vez o fim da organização japonesa que fez história no início do século. De lá para cá, apesar de o MMA ainda ser uma paixão na Terra do Sol Nascente, o que se viu foi a decadência da modalidade no país. Poderia uma edição do UFC mudar essa história?

Se isso vai acontecer, ainda é cedo para saber. Mas, a fórmula adotada pelos dirigentes da Zuffa para o evento procura a identificação dos amantes do Pride. Deve ser uma noite nostálgica.

Na coletiva de imprensa do UFC Rio, Rodrigo Minotauro, que lutara pela primeira vez no Brasil, comentou o possível retorno ao Japão, local onde alcançou o estrelato.

“Agora é descansar e, quem sabe, volto em fevereiro, no Japão”, disse Minota.

Além de Minotauro, outros ídolos do extinto Pride devem dar as caras, entre eles Wanderlei Silva, Mirko Cro Cop e Quinton Jackson. Claro, lutadores japoneses do Ultimate poderão estar em ação, atletas como Yushin Okami, Hatsu Hioki, Yoshihiro Akiyama, Takanori Gomi e Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto.

Vitor Belfort was overjoyed and upbeat at the post UFC 133 press conference this Saturday in Philadelphia. He came out of his fight with Yoshihiro Akiyama with the prize for best knockout and called over his boss Dana White for a photo.

“I just trained really hard. I’m ready, and I don’t know who’s going to win but I want the winner of the fight between Okami and Anderson. I want the belt, that’s my objective, my future, and I’m not going to stop,” he said.

“Anderson got me with that kick… What’s in the past is in the past, I’m only looking to the future. He tried that kick and now everyone tries it. I’m ready and I know what I want,” he added.

The Brazilian overcame Akiyama in just 1:52 minutes and admitted he was dying for a win.

“I got here hungry for it and that’s how I was in the gym too. It was hard on my training partners because I was really focused,” he declared.

“I feel as though I’ve completed a mission. People confuse dreams with desires. When I was a teenager I dreamed of being the best in the world. I left my family and training partners behind to move to Vegas. I’m here, and I stabilized my career. I’m training really hard in Las Vegas. I know what I want, I’m paying for it, I’m making sacrifices,” he continued.

On the August 27 UFC event in Brazil, the fighter is also really confident it will be a success. To Belfort, MMA will surprise everyone in the land where it was created.

“The message I have for Brazil is, ‘Get ready! The UFC is coming and these days its like the World Cup in Brazil: the people love it. It’s the second time the event goes there and television made way. It may seem like madness what I’m going to say, but in three years the UFC will surpass soccer,” he said in closing.

Vitor Belfort era só alegria e empolgação na coletiva após mo UFC 133, neste sábado, na Filadélfia. Recebeu o prêmio pelo nocaute da noite contra Yoshihiro Akiyama e chamou o patrão Dana White para tirar foto.

“Apenas treinei muito duro. Estou pronto e, não sei quem vai vencer, mas quero o vencedor da luta entre Okami e Anderson. Quero o cinto, esse é o meu objetivo, o meu futuro e não vou parar”, disse.

“Anderson me acertou aquele chute… Tudo no passado se foi, apenas olho para o futuro. Ele tentou aquele chute e hoje todos tentam. Estou pronto e sei o que eu quero”, completou.

O lutador bateu Akiyama em apenas 1min52s de luta, admitiu que estava louco pela vitória.

“Cheguei aqui com muita fome e estava assim também na academia. Foi difícil para os parceiros de treino, porque estava com muito foco”, declarou.

“Me sinto como se tivesse completado a missão. Pessoas confundem sonhos com desejos. Quando era um adolescente tinha o sonho de ser o melhor do mundo. Mudei minha família e companheiros de treino para Vegas, estou aqui, estabilizei a minha carreira. Estou treinando muito duro em Las Vegas, sei o que quero, estou pagando, fazendo o sacrifício”, prosseguiu.

Sobre o UFC no Brasil, no dia 27 de agosto, o lutador também está muito confiante no sucesso. Para Belfort, o MMA vai surpreender na terra onde foi criado.

“A mensagem que eu tenho para o Brasil é: estejam prontos! O UFC está chegando e, hoje, é como uma Copa do Mundo no Brasil, o povo adora. É a segunda vez do evento por lá e a TV se abriu. Parece loucura o que eu vou dizer, mas em três anos o UFC será mais que o futebol”, encerra.

Na principal da noite também foi assim. Veterano, Tito Ortiz tentou fazer o que podia contra Rashad Evans. Mas, na segunda parcial, Rashad derrubou e abafou no chão, seja na meia-guarda, no cem quilos ou no crucifixo invertido, travando o braço do adversário para socar. Tito escapou e permaneceu de quatro apoios ao chão, para evitar as joelhadas no rosto. Mas Evans surpreendeu, e, com o joelho, acertou em cheio, mas no plexo de Ortiz, que deitou-se, sem condições. Alguns golpes em seguida não restava nada mais ao árbitro além de encerrar a peleja.

Na segunda luta principal, Vitor Berlfort fez valer o apelido: Fenômeno. Na trocação, castigou Yoshihiro Akiyama, que caiu ao chão. Bem ao seu estilo, Vitor continuou socando, sem parar. Em apenas 1min52s, chegou ao 14º nocaute da carreira.

No card preliminar, Chad Mendes manteve a invencibilidade contra Rani Yahya, tendo conquistado a 11ª vitória. Chad anulou as tentativas de Rani em levá-lo ao chão e ainda conseguiu derrubar. Ao fim dos três rounds, o brasileiro não conseguiu ser efetivo, o que valeu a decisão unânime a favor de Mendes.

Já Rafael Sapo conseguiu a primeira vitória no UFC contra Paul Bradley, depois de uma derrota e empate. O faixa-preta de Jiu-Jitsu não deixou o oponente derrubar e usou bem os chutes durante a luta. Levou vantagem na maior parte do tempo, tendo a preferência dos jurados em decisão unânime. Sapo deu fim a uma sequência de seis lutas sem perder do oponente.

Today it’s Philadelphia’s turn to host the Ultimate Fighting Championships, and the headlining fights promise fireworks.

In the co-main event, Vitor Belfort takes on Yoshihiro Akiyama. It will be the black belt’s first appearance since losing to Anderson Silva last February, when he had his shot at the promotional middleweight belt.

“He’s a tough fighter, very experienced, can take a lot of heat, strike, and he’s dynamic. By my mind is readier than ever. I’m so strong no one can stop me. I’m focused on what I have to do to win, and I’m looking to put him away. That’s how I’ll be when I step into the octagon, looking to put him away,” guarantees the “Phenomenon”.

Akiyama, on his part, avoids making any strong statements but promises victory.

“I feel Mr. Belfort is very strong, a perfect fighter, and he’s currently one of my heroes, but I’ve progressed a lot in my striking thanks to lots of practice and experience,” he says.

Could we have a standup war in store for us?

Now in the main event of the evening, Tito Ortiz will be back in a little over a month since his last appearance, facing also-ex champ Rashad Evans. Shold he win, Tito will again figure at the top of the light heavyweight division, following the worst slump of his career, where he went five fights without a win. And the “Bad Boy” looks to be up to the task.

“In boxing they had Muhammad Ali, Pro-Wrestling had Hulk Hogan, and MMA has Tito Ortiz,” he asserts.

Hoje é dia de Ultimate Fighting na Filadélfia, Estados Unidos, e as principais lutas da noite prometem ação.

Na segunda luta principal, Vitor Belfort encara Yoshihiro Akiyama. É a primeira apresentação do faixa-preta desde a derrota para Anderson Silva, em fevereiro, quando disputou o cinturão de médios.

“Ele é um lutador muito duro, é experiente, tem poder de absorção, pode trocar e é muito dinâmico. Mas a minha mente está mais preparada do que nunca. Tão forte que ninguém pode me parar. Estou focado no que tenho que fazer para ganhar, e eu estou em busca de acabar com ele. É assim que entrarei no octógono, buscarei acabar com ele”, garante o “Fenômeno”.

Akiyama, por sua vez, evita declarações fortes, mas promete buscar a vitória.

“Eu acho que o Sr. Belfort é muito forte, um lutador perfeito, e ele é atualmente um dos meus ícones, mas a minha trocação tem feito progressos, graças a muita prática e experiência”, diz.

Será que teremos uma luta em pé?

Já no principal combate da noite, Tito Ortiz volta em pouco mais de um mês da última apresentação contra o também ex-campeão Rashad Evans. No caso de triunfo, Tito figura novamente entre os grandes da categoria meio-pesado, depois da pior fase da carreira, quando ficou cinco lutas sem vencer. E o “Bad Boy” parece estar disposto a isso.

There’s a stellar card in store for Philadelphia, USA’s Wells Fargo Center, where UFC 133 will go down this coming Saturday, August 6. The evening’s main event features two former light heavyweight champions, with Tito Ortiz taking on Rashad Evans. Another heavily-anticipated matchup pits Vitor Belfort against Yoshihiro Akiyama, both of whom are coming off losses, in the middleweight division.

The first two fights on the UFC 133 undercard will be broadcast over the official UFC Facebook page, facebook.com/UFC.

After Phil Davis pulled out due to injury, Tito Ortiz stepped in to replace him in a fight that could breathe new life into his career. Following a five-year win drought, Ortiz recently saw his fortunes change in a shocking about-face, when he quickly dispatched favored-to-win Ryan Bader at UFC 132 in July. Now, he has a chance to get all the closer to the light heavyweight belt in his rematch with Rashad, with whom he fought to a draw back in 2007.

The winner of TUF season 2 and a former light heavyweight champion, Evans hasn’t fought since early last year, when he overcame Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson via unanimous judges’ decision. Putting his money on his wrestling and potent right, Evans promises to pick up where he left off with his 2009 loss to Lyoto Machida, as a win now will put him straight through to a showdown with champion Jon Jones.

Vitor back after losing to Anderson

Brazil’s Vitor Belfort will be back in the UFC for the first time since losing his bid to snatch middleweight champion Anderson Silva’s title. Vitor will now face Japan’s Yoshihiro Akiyama, who like the Brazilian, is also coming off a loss in the UFC. In his last outing, in October of last year, the Japanese fighter dropped a unanimous decision to England’s Michael Bisping. Though he’s been beaten in two of his last three UFC appearances, Akiyama took the ‘fight of the night’ bonus on every occasion he has set foot in the octagon.

Prior to hitting a stumbling block in Anderson Silva, Belfort had amassed five-straight wins. On his return to the UFC, after spending four years fighting for other promotions, the Rio de Janeiro native needed just three minutes to knock out Rich Franklin at UFC 103, in September 2009.

Brazil’s Rogério Minotouro, who would have figured on the UFC 133 card as well, the week before last announced he will be pulling out due to injury. His would-be opponent, Rich Franklin, ended up nixed from the card as well, for want of a substitute opponent for him. With the news, the Vitor Belfort-Yoshihiro Akiyama matchup will be bumped to co-main event status. The fight between Dennis Hallman and Brian Ebersole was also promoted, to the main card.

Brazil’s Rafael “Sapo” Natal will be taking on Paul Bradley. Natal, who trains in New York and had his opponent switched on him three times for the event, will be trying for his first win in the UFC middleweight division on his third outing for the promotion. The 27-year-old entered the UFC fray in 2010 and his last fight, against Jesse Bongfeldt, ended in a draw. With his solid submission skills, Rafael is likely to turn some heads.

Yet another Brazilian features on the card, with Rani Yahya set to face the undefeated Chad Mendes, who opted not to wait around for his due shot at José Aldo’s featherweight belt. Yahya is coming off a win against former WEC champion Mike Brown on their UFC debuts. The matchup will place the winner at the front of the line for a featherweight title challenge.

In another middleweight fight, Jorge “El Conquistador” Rivera takes on Constantinos Philippou, who entered the mix when an injured Alessio Sakara made way. The fight promises fireworks, since both fighters are hungry for victory, having lost in their last octagon endeavors. The welterweight tilt of Rory MacDonald and the seasoned Mike Pyle will open the main card. Rory is coming off a win over Nate Diaz at UFC 129, and Pyle overcame Ricardo Almeida at UFC 128.

O UFC 133 promete grandes confrontos para o dia 6 de agosto, sábado, no Wells Fargo Center, na Filadélfia, Estados Unidos. A atração principal da noite será o duelo entre os ex-campeões da divisão meio-pesado Tito Ortiz e Rashad Evans. Outro aguardado duelo será entre Vitor Belfort e o japonês Yoshihiro Akiyama, os dois vindos de derrotas, pela categoria dos médios.

O evento começa a partir das 19h15 (horário de Brasília) com as duas primeiras lutas do card preliminar sendo transmitidas via Facebook oficial do UFC: facebook.com/UFC.

Após a lesão do americano Phil Davis, Tito Ortiz terá a oportunidade de substituí-lo numa luta única que pode dar uma guinada histórica em sua carreira. Após permanecer cinco anos sem vitória, ele recentemente surpreendeu com uma volta retumbante ao superar o favorito Ryan Bader no UFC 132, realizado em julho. Agora, ele terá a chance de ficar muito mais próximo do cinturão dos meio-pesados ao reencontrar Rashad Evans, com quem realizou embate em 2007, que terminou empatado.

Vencedor do TUF 2 e ex-campeão dos meio-pesados, Evans não luta desde o primeiro semestre do ano passado, quando venceu Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson por decisão unânime dos juízes. Investindo em seu wrestling e na potente direita, Evans promete retomar a corrida pelo cinturão que perdeu em 2009 para Lyoto Machida, com uma vitória ele ganhará o direito a desafiar Jon Jones.

Vitor retorna após derrota para Anderson

O brasileiro Vitor Belfort estará de volta ao UFC, em seu primeiro confronto após perder a disputa do cinturão dos pesos médios para Anderson Silva. Vitor enfrenta agora o japonês Yoshihiro Akiyama, que assim como o brasileiro, também vem de uma derrota no UFC. Em um confronto ocorrido em outubro do ano passado, o japonês foi superado pelo inglês Michael Bisping por decisão unânime dos juízes. Apesar de ter sido derrotado em dois de seus três últimos confrontos no UFC, Akiyama levou o prêmio de melhor luta da noite em todas as ocasiões em que esteve em ação no octógono.

Antes do revés frente a Anderson, Belfort havia acumulado cinco vitórias consecutivas na carreira. Em seu retorno ao UFC, depois de quatro anos em outras competições, o carioca precisou de apenas três minutos para nocautear o americano Rich Franklin no UFC 103, em setembro de 2009.

O brasileiro Rogério Minotouro, que também estaria no card do UFC 133, anunciou sua contusão no fim de semana retrasado. Com o novo desfalque e sem oponente à altura, Rich Franklin, que encararia Minotouro, também ficou de fora do evento. Com a alteração o duelo de Vitor Belfort contra o japonês Yoshihiro Akiyama será a co-luta principal da noite. A luta entre os meio-médios Dennis Hallman e Brian Ebersole também foi promovida do card preliminar para o principal.

O mineiro Rafael “Sapo” Natal terá Paul Bradley pela frente. Natal, que treina em Nova York e teve seu adversário alterado três vezes na edição 133, tenta a sua primeira vitória na categoria dos médios do UFC em seu terceiro compromisso no principal evento de MMA do mundo. O mineiro de 27 anos ingressou no UFC em 2010 e sua última luta, diante de Jesse Bongfeldt, terminou empatada. Com seu grande poder de finalização Rafael promete surpreender.

Além de Sapo, o evento terá outro brasileiro, é Rani Yahya que encara o invicto Chad Mendes, que preferiu não esperar pelo retorno de José Aldo para disputar o cinturão da categoria.  Mendes enfrentará o faixa-preta Rani Yahya, que vem de vitória sobre o ex-campeão do WEC, Mike Brown, em sua estreia no Ultimate. O duelo deixa o vencedor bem perto de uma disputa de cinturão dos penas.

Em combate nos médios, Jorge “El Conquistador” Rivera encara Constantinos Philippou, que entrou na lacuna deixada pelo lesionado Alessio Sakara. A luta promete muita ação, uma vez que ambos entrarão nesta disputa com sede de vitória, já que foram derrotados em seus últimos confrontos. O duelo entre os meio-médios Rory MacDonald e o veterano Mike Pyle abrirá o card principal. Rory vem de vitória sobre Nate Diaz no UFC 129, e Pyle venceu Ricardo Almeida no UFC 128.
