The moment of the double DQ in Abu Dhabi

The fan side of almost all of us applauded the attitude of the referee to disqualify the two finalists of the brown belt adult absolute in Abu Dhabi, during the WPJJC 2013.

This is because, deep down, we all wanted to watch an electrifying fight, with comings and goings of these two great Jiu-Jitsu athletes.

It turns out that combats between two great fighters not always translate into big fights.

Does anyone remember the moments before the fight between B.J. Penn and Matt Serra in September 2002? Most of us awaited the greatest ground combat in UFC history! And what we saw was a battle fought standing up. I bet neither of these two champions consider that episode in the list of their best moments.

This is just one example. Fabio Gurgel and Amaury Bitetti fought countless times in the 1990s, and their contests were rarely decided by more than two points. The most interesting thing is that most people harshly criticized the technique of the winner (usually Amaury), but the reason for the restrained fight was the highest level techniques of both were equal, not by a lack of technique like it was suggested.

Even one of the greatest submitters of the late 1990s, Nino Schembri, found himself holding the fight during a match in which he opened five points ahead of another submitting monster, Fernando Margarida, in a fight held in São Paulo.

And even someone who is possibly the greatest submitter in the history of Jiu-Jitsu competition, Roger Gracie, spent a good amount of time “resting” in Marcus Buchecha’s closed guard during the confrontation of the two in Metamoris, simply because it was the most prudent thing to do at that moment.

We need to distinguish bravery from intelligence and strategy, not encouraging an immoderate courage, bordering suicide.

Again, our frustration as fans watching Keenan Cornelius and Paulo Miyao not coming to kill and die is easier to reflect a perverse side of celebrating the disqualification of both. 

But whether you agree or not with the attitude of the referee, it is not fair to judge the Jiu-Jitsu of these two athletes by the fight against one another, and use it to deconstruct the technical qualities of both.

Leveled and monotonous fights are not a privilege of the current generation; they always existed and will always exist. But if you want to analyze the techniques and momentum of two of the best brown belts today, it makes more sense to observe their fights against other opponents.

You will then notice that Paulo Miyao impresses, taming monsters far beyond his 61kg since he was a blue belt, and that the percentage of submissions performed by Keenan Cornelius is as high as his notable predecessors as “kings” of brown belt, such as Ronaldo Jacare, Marcio Pe de Pano and Fernando Margarida.

I don’t even know Keenan and Paulo personally. But I admire the Jiu-Jitsu they present far beyond what is perceived in the confrontation between them.

There is an urgent need to understand that in order to grow and aim to become an Olympic sport, first we need to accept that on video many fights are hard to understand and ugly to watch.

Grand Master Helio Gracie has commented that: “Dancing is beautiful, fighting is supposed to be efficient and effective.”

Jiu-Jitsu, recreated in Brazil by the Gracie family, aimed for self-defense at first and it stayed like that for decades without the competitive connotation until they decided to write the rules of sportive Jiu-Jitsu and to initiate the official championships.

The fact is that in fights where there is no grappling, like boxing, muay thai, karate, etc., the most uninformed watcher understands quickly what is happening. With Jiu-Jitsu, the more efficient but less cinematic of the arts, it doesn’t happen.

The final turn of Jiu-Jitsu will happen on the day we understand that any sport that wants to survive in these new times needs to understand that dynamism is the key word. After all, watching the championships live via internet, smartphone, computer and television screens will be something as common as talking on the phone today.

The lack of combativeness is by no means a novelty in Jiu-Jitsu. In older championships, some fighters locked opponents in their guards or immobilized in side control for ages, and just when the audience shouted like crazy to the referee a punishment would often occur.

There has been tremendous development in the refereeing of Jiu-Jitsu fights, and the sport now has a group of professional referees and frequent refresher courses, which is essential. The crucial point, however, is the “feeling” of the referee to understand that it is a responsibility not to allow the lack of combativeness – this swamp where ever sank the claims of popularizing the gentle art on the planet.

As in any sport, new positions were created and perfected, like berimbolos, 50/50, with the initial intention of seeking efficiency, and perhaps even more dynamism. The fighter who uses them is then positioned so that if the opponent attacks, he or she will certainly be swept back and if he falls back, he will suffer the same two points. But this only worked when few knew them. Now, when the positions are used, no one moves, knowing that moving means losing points.

I’ve gone to Abu Dhabi as a guest, and saw up close the brown belt absolute final between Keenan Cornelius, 88kg, against Paulo Miyao, 61kg, who in the semifinal had defeated the great fighter and local hero Faisal Al Ketbi, a monster of 100kg and who has been trained by the best professors in the world for ten years and lives to fight. And me, who thought he was about to see a light featherweight become the absolute champion, saw something extraordinary instead, something even more unusual.
The main referee Luciano Mendes, who, I must say, respected exactly what is written in the rule book when it comes to punishing lack of combativeness. As both were tangled, each waiting for the other to move in order to sweep, they began to take warnings and punishments. Both continued without taking the initiative to attack; only simulating actions without purpose. After the fourth and final punishment, the black belt Luciano, as stated in the rule, stopped the fight, the two fighters were disqualified and sent them off the mat without the dollars, the medals and the champion belt, glory that went to the winner of the match for the third place.

For me, this was the highest moment in Jiu-Jitsu occurred since the professionalization of the referees, and may be a turning point. This episode can and should be used as an example so the fighters understand that the lack of combativeness or trying to deceive the referees with simulations don’t lead to the gold medal, but to the elimination. Only then we will take a big step towards dynamic and exciting fights to watch, very different from what we see in most championships.

Buchecha tames Rodolfo to secure the absolute gold

Rodolfo Vieira and Marcus Buchecha Almeida met again after the epic battle at the 2012 IBJJF Worlds. With only six minutes on the clock, both fighters knew that details were the key to the gold medal. Rodolfo started in full speed and after Buchecha pulled guard he almost mounted and took the back. Almeida held the pressure and swept with a bridge when his opponent was about to mount. Losing by two, Rodolfo bravely fought back and swept back, tying the match 2-2 but ended in Buchecha’s 50/50. With less than two minutes on the clock, Buchecha went for it and scored two more points with another sweep. Rodolfo tried to come back, but Buchecha’s balance prevailed and the current World Champion almost got a guard pass when the clock signaled the end and the scoreboard granted Marcus Almeida his first WPJJC absolute title.

Gabrielle Garcia claims her eighth WPJJC gold medal in the 2013 purple/brown/black female open weight division final against Beatrice Mesquita. She won by points via takedown and guard passes. “While other came here on tourism, I never left my hotel since I got here. I was focused to win”, said Gabi.

Both Keenan Cornelius and Paulo Miyao are disqualified in the final of the brown belt adult absolute leaving Kaue Damasceno as the only one on the podium. The ref gave penalty after penalty until he gave two points to each and then made them stand and disqualified them. They were both in the double guard pull position threatening with footlock and berimbolos however the action was not enough for the referee. The gold for the adult brown belt open weight division now goes to Kaue Damascene of Nova União after both Keenan Cornelius and Paulo Miyao were disqualified in the final. Kaue placed third initially after he was disqualified in the semis by a slam on Keenan and then beat Faisal Al Ketbi in the match for third place.

Purple Belt

Teammates from GFTeam Brazil, Patrick Pontes Gaudio and Victor Honorio met in the final of the adult purple belt open weight division. They went back and forth in a playful match with Victor Honorio pulling the lead by a guard pass more. Marcio Andre placed third in the division.

The 2013 WPJJC has defined all its black belt champions.

As it seems, all favorites confirmed expectations and got their gold medals.

Here is the results of  all the weights, male and female.

Black belt finals:

-64kg Thiago Marques tapped out Samuel Hertzog with a triangle.

-70kg Augusto Tanquinho Mendes defeated Rubens Charles Maciel 2-0 with a sweep.

-76kg Leandro Lo defeated Lucas Lepri 1-0 on advantages.

-82kg Marcos Souza defetated Victor Estima 2-0 with a takedown.

-88kg Romulo Barral got injured and had to give the win to Andre Galvão.

-94kg Rodolfo Vieira tapped out Pedro Peres with a bow and arrow choke

-100kg Antonio Braga Neto defeated Jose Junior 2-0 with a sweep.

+100kg Rodrigo Cavaca outscored Marcus Almeida Buchecha 7-0 in a friendly match.

Female purple/brown/black finals:

-60kg Michelle Nicolini defeated Mackenzie Dern 2-0 with a sweep.

-66kg Beatriz Mesquita defetaed Luanna Alzuguir vs. 4-0 with 2 sweeps.

-72kg Caroline de Lazzer Fernanda Mazzelli 3-0 on advantages.

+72kg Gabrielle Garcia tapped out Tammy Griego with a choke.

The WPJJC holds its fifth edition this weekend in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Roberto Satoshi (Bonsai JJ) was one of the great revelations of the black belt last year when he won the lightweight and defeated tough guys like Lucas Lepri and David Ramos.

Now more respected, Satoshi wants to repeat the feat and take the gold and money offered as prizes to the champions.

“I haven’t changed much since my title in the UAE last year. I tried to just hone my skills and give more importance to the physical part. I don’t want to do anything different; I’ll keep my head in place, knowing that the past is gone. In Abu Dhabi, as in all other black belt championships, there are no favorites”, says Satoshi.

Brazilian living in Japan, Roberto Satoshi keeps training with his brother Marcos Souza to repeat the title in the up to 76kg division. Less nervous than last year, but knowing he is a target for the favorite, like Leandro Lo, Lucas Lepri and JT.

“In my first year as a black belt I learned many things and I’m more confident. I know there is still much to do, I have to train more. In 2012 I was very nervous, especially in the World last year in Long Beach”, he recalls. “To win in WPJJC, where the fight takes only six minutes, it’s important to always stay in front of the scoreboard. It won’t be easy, now the opponents know who I am, while last year I was an upset (laughs).”

“The ones who want to win in Abu Dhabi will need to make at least two hard fights. After all, the prize money makes the game even more exciting (laughs)”, he says.

2013 WPJJC: the brackets are out

The 2013 WPJJC is less than two days away and the fighting brackets for all divisions were released today.

The athletes in the adult division were divided in eight weight categories.

According to the schedule, the male and female adult white belts and blue belts and master& seniors white, blue and purple belts compete this Wednesday, April 10.

Purple belts, Brown belts and Black belts in the adult division, male and female, and master & seniors brown belts and black belts compete on April 11-12.

Saturday, April 13, will be dedicated to the open class competition of all divisions.

Here is a list of the main competitors in each division:

Black Belt

Up to 64kg: Cleber Costa, Richard Ávila , Erick Buthsombat, Leonardo Lopes, Thiago Marques, Bruno Lopes.

Sunday was the third day of the selective for WPJJC in Gramado, Brazil, and the black and brown belts who almost did it on Saturday during the weights dispute had a chance to win a ticket to go to the United Arab Emirates to fight at a professional event in April. Even with the second chance, they weren’t happy. Antonio Braga Neto and Vinicius Marinho are the ones to blame, who won again in heavy and light absolute (up to and over 74kg).

Sunday was thrilling from the semifinals.

In the light absolute, up to 74kg, judoka Moacir Mendes (Alliance) eliminated the tough Claudio Caloquinha (GB) by 2 to 0 and went to the final.

Across the draw, the brown belt Victor Silverio (GFTeam) had been showing a pretty game, after beating the always dangerous submitter Isaac Paiva (Saikoo) to ensure the semifinal.

But there was a companion in the competition. It was the lightweight championship Vinicius Marinho (GFTeam), who took Abraão Amorim’s back (Evolution) to get to the semifinal, making his partner Silvério give way to the victory.

In the final, Vinicius Marinho and Moacir Mendes began exchanging grips. The GFTeam fighter tried to pull for his guard and go for the x-sweep. Moacir, however, avoided the sweep with good posture. In the end, Vinicius got an advantage from the sweep, which earned him the victory and the check worth a plane ticket to Abu Dhabi.

In the heavy absolute, Antonio Braga Neto (Gordo Jiu-Jitsu) showed to be the strongest. Neto submitted all in his absolute fights with his complete Jiu-Jitsu. In the semifinal, the most memorable Sunday moment, Neto beat Agnaldo Silveira (Gracie Barra) with a flying triangle.

Across the draw, Tarsis Humphreys (Alliance) exchanged sweeps with Alexandro Ceconi, 2 x 2, and won by 2 x 1 with the advantages.

Clock choke in the final

In the grand final, Neto pulled Tarsis for the guard, but the Alliance beast fell in middle. Before straightening up, Neto started working the grips and applied an omoplata, being able to sweep. Tarsis kept on his guard, but couldn’t deal well with Neto’s pressure, and he passed the guard and used a clock choke to win another gold. Neto had already won the over 92kg category when he gave his ticket to Ricardo Evangelista, who was the second.

Ladies first: in the purple, brown and black belts, the winners were Marina Ribeiro and Michelle Nicolini.

Marina made a perfect championship and also won the light absolute. In the absolute final up to 61kg, she almost sweeped Luanna Alzuguir with an omoplata and secured the title by two advantages to none. Michelle Nicolini won with a score of 6 to 4 against Talita Treta. One detail: the CheckMat star was recovering from a serious muscular injury on her thigh.

In the male competition between beasts and revelations, almost all were saved after a sparkling Saturday. The champs were Thiago Barreto (up to 65kg), Vinicius Marinho (up to 74kg), Gustavo Campos (up to 83kg), Luiz Panza (up to 92kg) and Ricardo Evangelista (over 92kg). On Sunday, at 4 p.m., two more champions guaranteed their package to Abu Dhabi, the absolute lightweight and black belt heavyweight.

In the lightest category, up to 65kg, Thiago Barreto da Brasa was the big name after the elimination of several favorites, like Isaque Paiva and Pablo Silva. In the end, Thiago Barreto beat Paulo Roberto (Gracie Humaitá) in the score and won the great final against the revelation, Pedro Valença, from Cícero Costha. Thiago applied an americana on Valença’s feet.

In the up to 74kg division, Vinicius Marinho beat Antonio Carlos, his GFTeam partner, after winning the seminal against Kim Terra in the advantages (guard passing).  Marinho got the ticket and is a strong name for Abu Dhabi, since he has already won several championships in this category in Brazil.

In the up to 83kg, a war of giants, Guto Campos needed to defeat Thiago Porto (Alliance), who beat Tarsis Humphreys on Friday, while Rodrigo Pimpolho fought with Eduardo Português. In the final, Guto submitted Rodrigo with style using an omoplata.

And up to 92kg, one of the pleasant surprises of the competition, Luiz Panza (Barbosa) beat Pedro Henrique (CheckMat) and then fought with Nivaldo Oliveira (Brazilian absolute champion) in the final. Panza swept, was swept, but in the end, with a score of 4 to 4, he defeated Nivaldo with two advantages for attacking more.

The biggest turnaround was in the above 92kg category. First, Braga Neto won against Rodrigo Cavaca by decision. On the other side of the semifinals, Léo Nogueira fell ill with an intestinal infection, and let Ricardo Evangelista advance. And because Braga Neto already had a ticket do the UAE due to his victory in Rio selectives, he gave the ticket to Ricardo (GFTeam).

In purple and blue belts, five representatives of the new generation have done well.

In purple heavy, the winner was Victor Honório (GFTeam), who beat Fernando Andrade (Alliance). In the purple light absolute, one of the biggest submitters of the event: Wellington Luís (Cícero Costha) took Lucas Nogueira’s back (BTT) and will try to shine in Abu Dhabi.

In the female blue absolute, the noble blood of Ana Carolina Vieira prevailed. Rodolfo Vieira’s sister, the two-time heavyweight world champion from GFTeam, won after applying some beautiful armbars and will face some of the best in the world in Abu Dhabi.

In the male blue belt, Fellipe Trovo (Nova União) won the heavy absolute and Nicholas Menegali (Alliance) got the gold in the light.

The 13th spot went to the white belt absolute champion, Eder Negão, from Nova União.

The 2013 iteration of the World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship (WPJJC) is getting closer and closer to defining all its contestants.

This past weekend another tryout event was held to determined who will be traveling with all expenses paid to the April 10-13 main event in the United Arab Emirates.

In Miami, athletes of all belt colors took to the mats to vie for a spot on the big stage.

A edição de 2013 do World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship (WPJJC) está cada vez mais perto e pouco a pouco os participantes vão sendo definidos.

No último final de semana foi realizada mais uma seletiva para o evento mundial, marcado para acantecer de 10 a 13 de Abril, em Abu Dhabi, nos Emirados Arabes Unidos.

Romulo Barral to compete at the WPJJC Miami Trials

The 2013 World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Cup is having another one of its trials this weekend.

It’s time for Miami to be the stage of the struggle for a paid trip to compete in the main event next April in the United Arab Emirates.

The matches go on this Saturday and Sunday at the Miami Christian School on 200 Northwest 109th Avenue, Miami, FL.

The fighting brackets are up and it’s all ready to go.

In the main category, the brown/black belt division, some huge names will be competing for the right to travel with all expenses paid for by the WPJJC.

Black belt world champions Romulo Barral, Lucas Lepri, Roberto Cyborg are some of the stars to take on the mats in Miami.
