No, they weren’t looking to settle their differences after the abbreviated zero-zero match that defined Rodolfo as the grand champion a bit early. They were guests of His Highness Sheikh Tahnoon Bin Zayed and awaited the arrival of their host, who came straight from a weight-lifting session, with me and Renzo Gracie tagging along.

The two were smiling, excited, and they didn’t train with each other. Rodolfo opted to summon this scribe, who had only disembarked in the capital of the Emirates with Renzo in time to drop the bags at the hotel and shove off to meet the two stars of the World Pro there on the white mats at Tahnoon’s villa.

Just 21 years old and carrying a solid 95-kg frame, Rodolfo took it easy on me for some 15 or 20 minutes, while our host, Tahnoon, practiced with Rafael and then Renzo. Tahoon and Rodolfo were up next, and the champion was impressed by the sheikh:

“It’s a good thing he wasn’t in the absolute today,” said Vieira, half joking half serious.

He studied Jiu-Jitsu for another hour, Tahnoon bringing up the subject of reverse triangles and anaconda chokes, not to mention foot locks and an assortment of other chokes, all interspersed between a lot of defensive guard work.

Until the sheikh politely asked that his guests train with his local students, before calling a close to the session and bidding farewell. There were still hours in the evening for the traditional game of paddle tennis and a supper thronged with superfoods – all outdoors, in the refreshing desert air.

Now it’s already past midnight in Abu Dhabi, and the athletes are already back at the hotel. But they will be left with the lingering remembrance of a night where winning a championship didn’t mark the end of their Jiu-Jitsu lesson.

Os dois estavam sorridentes, animados, e não treinaram entre si. Rodolfo preferiu convidar este escriba, que desembarcara na capital dos Emirados com Renzo a tempo apenas de largar as malas no hotel, e ir encontrar as duas estrelas do World Pro ali nos reservados tatames brancos da vila de Tahnoon.

Com apenas 21 anos, e seus 95 quilos sólidos, Rodolfo me aliviou por uns 15 ou 20 minutos, enquanto o anfitrião Tahnoon praticou com Rafael e depois com Renzo. Tahnoon e Rodolfo treinaram a seguir, e o campeão se impressionou com o xeque:

“Ainda bem que ele não tava no absoluto hoje”, disse Vieira, metade brincando, metade a sério.

Estudou-se Jiu-Jitsu por mais uma hora, Tahnoon puxando a pauta de triângulos invertidos e triângulos de mão (anaconda), além de chaves de pé e variados estrangulamentos “noiva de copacabana”, tudo intercalado com muita defesa de guarda.

Até que o xeque pediu gentilmente aos convidados para treinarem com os seus alunos locais, antes de encerrar a sessão e se despedir. A noite ainda guardou espaço para o tradicional jogo de paddle tennis, e um jantar regado às chamadas “superfoods”, alimentos que dão energia extra, tudo ao ar livre, na refrescante noite do deserto.

Agora já é madrugada em Abu Dhabi, e os atletas já estão de volta ao hotel. Mas ficarão com a lembrança da noite em que ganhar um campeonato não encerrou o aprendizado de Jiu-Jitsu.

Rodolfo spent most of the match on his feet, legs bent, trying to pass the open guard of Mendes, who attempted a few attacks, but nothing noteworthy. There was a clear excess of caution from both parties. At the end of the six regulation minutes the ref ordered the two to kneel at center ring. He then called a huddle with the two backup refs. Uncertainty hung in the air of the arena. Who would take home the 15 thousand dollar prize money? The question was answered when the ref returned to center ring, asked Rafa and Rodolfo to get to their feet, and raised the hand of the heavier and lengthier athletes.

Rodolfo looked incredulous. He thanked God and went straight to the podium to receive his gold medal. The incredulousness could perhaps be explained by the let down the black belt suffered just minutes earlier, when he lost 4-2 to Rafael Lovato in the under-92 kg decider.

“I broke down, even cried. . . If it weren’t for my friends, I wouldn’t have had the strength or psychological wherewithal to face Rafa in the absolute final. I’m just thankful that my friends picked up my spirits for me,” vented Rodolfo, just after leaving the podium.

The showdown with Lovato was, in the opinion of GRACIEMAG.com, the best match of the day.

Lively, highly technical and back-and-forth. Rodolfo started out landing a sightly throw on Lovato. The former tied things up with a sweep and then, in the waning moments, landed yet another, of the same variety (catching his opponent’s neck in his arm). By the time Rodolfo tried to launch a comeback, time had run out. Finally someone this season has managed to stop the seemingly unstoppable Rodolfo Vieira. Hats off to Lovato.

The match between Xande Ribeiro and José Junior (over-92 kg final) was an interesting one too. Junior stumps anyone who doesn’t know him. He’s not muscular, seems to be quiet and introspective, but when once he’s in the match area he gushes gas and technique. On Friday he caught aces Lucio Lagarto and Gilmar Oliveira off guard. This Saturday, against Xande, he put up a tough fight, but was unable to withstand the consistency and experience of Saulo Ribeiro’s younger brother. Xande took the divisional title by a score of 5 to 2.

Durante a maior parte da luta, Rodolfo ficou em pé, joelhos flexionados, tentando passar a guarda aberta de Rafa, que, por sua vez, arriscava alguns botes, mas nada muito expressivo. Nitidamente houve excesso de cautela de ambas as partes. Ao final dos 6 minutos regulamentares, o juiz pediu que os dois lutadores se ajoelhassem ao centro do ringue. Reuniu-se com os dois árbitros auxiliares. A dúvida ecoava pela arena. Quem levaria para casa os 15 mil dólares de premiação? A pergunta foi respondida quando o juiz voltou ao centro do ringue, pediu que Rafa e Rodolfo se levantassem e ergueu o braço do atleta mais pesado e de maior envergadura.

Rodolfo parecia incrédulo. Agradeceu a Deus e foi direto para o pódio receber a medalha de ouro. A incredulidade talvez se explique pelo “bode” que o faixa-preta arrastou minutos antes, após ser derrotado por Rafael Lovato (4 a 2) na decisão da categoria até 92kg.

“Fiquei mal, cheguei a chorar… Se não fosse pelos meus amigos, eu não teria tido força e capacidade psicológica de enfrentar o Rafa na final do absoluto. Só tenho a agradecer, meus amigos me reanimaram, me botaram pra cima”, desabafou Rodolfo, logo após descer do pódio.

O embate contra Lovato foi, na opinião do GRACIEMAG.com, a melhor luta deste sábado. Movimentada, bastante técnica e com reviravolta. Rodolfo começou aplicando uma bela queda em Lovato. Este empatou com uma inversão e, nos instantes finais, aplicou mais outra, do mesmo tipo (enroscando o pescoço do adversário com o braço). Quando Rodolfo tentou reagir, já não havia mais tempo. Enfim alguém consegue parar nesta temporada o rolo compressor Rodolfo Vieira. Palmas para Lovato.

Na melhor luta deste sábado, Lovato venceu Rodolfo Vieira por 4 a 2, na final até 92kg.

A luta entre Xande Ribeiro e José Junior (decisão acima de 92kg) também foi interessante. Junior, aliás, surpreende quem não o conhece. Não tem físico musculoso, aparenta ser um cara quieto e introspectivo, mas quando entra no ringue revela um bocado de gás e de técnica. Na sexta ele havia surpreendido craques como Lucio Lagarto e Gilmar Oliveira. Neste sábado, contra Xande, fez jogo duro, mas não suportou a consistência e a experiência do irmão de Saulo Ribeiro. Xande faturou o título da categoria com o placar de 5 a 2 em pontos.

O suntuoso Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel, em Abu Dhabi, cativa os lutadores de Jiu-Jitsu não só pela exuberância de suas instalações, mas também pelos pequenos detalhes. Logo na recepção, os hóspedes têm acesso a uma bancada com tâmaras, alimento recorrente no mundo árabe, assim como nas receitas da Dieta Gracie.

Foi saboreando algumas dessas tâmaras que o repórter do GRACIEMAG.com encontrou Tarsis Humpreys e Bernardo Faria. Os dois craques da Alliance estavam a caminho do restaurante onde o almoço era servido. Comeram às pressas para não perder o primeiro ônibus que levaria competidores, staff e jornalistas ao Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), a arena onde, por volta das 15h15, teve início a versão sem kimono do World Pro Jiu-Jitsu 2011.

Nem Bernardo, nem Tarsis foram muito bem nesta sexta-feira. O primeiro perdeu no peso para Rafael Lovato (7 a 0) e foi finalizado nas quartas-de-final do absoluto por Gilmar Oliveira (estrangulamento). Tarsis, por sua vez, não lutou no peso, apenas no  absoluto, categoria em que foi batido por Vagner Rocha.

A dupla que realmente brilhou ao longo do dia foi Rodolfo Vieira e Rafael Mendes. Rodolfo seguiu a consistência que esbanjou no Pan 2011. Somando os compromissos que teve no peso e no absoluto, venceu sete lutas. De todas elas, a mais acirrada foi contra Vagner Rocha, o “Ceará”, na semifinal do absoluto. Rodolfo ganhou nas vantagens, de virada, bem no finzinho do combate. Emocionante.

Já Rafa parece estar cada vez mais “abusado”. No bom sentido, claro. O que queremos exaltar é a sagacidade do lutador em enfrentar atletas bem mais pesados, sem recorrer a estratégias de fuga. Rafa vai para cima, intimida. Foi o que aconteceu quando derrotou Gilmar Oliveira (sim, o mesmo que havia finalizado Bernardo Faria).

Com a manobra mais arisca do evento até agora, Rafa pegou as costas de Gilmar e arrochou um mata-leão. Gilmar resistiu ao golpe, mas perdeu por pontos.

Neste sábado, o mais novo dos Mendes (que não passa de 65kg) vai disputar a decisão do absoluto contra a locomotiva Rodolfo Vieira (que ronda os 92kg). Quem vence esse confere? Mande sua opinião agora mesmo, no espaço que você encontra no final desta página.

Outra dupla que chamou atenção na sexta foi Xande Ribeiro e Rafael Lovato. Donos de técnicas refinadas, os dois faixas-pretas tiveram ótima atuação nos respectivos pesos. Xande está na final da categoria acima de 92kg contra José Junior. Lovato está na final até 92kg contra “a sensação do momento” Rodolfo Vieira.

No absoluto, no entanto, Xande e Lovato foram derrotados logo no início de suas  chaves.

Abu Dhabi’s lavish Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel is captivating to the Jiu-Jitsu fighters not just for the extravagance of its facilities, but because of the finer details. Right at the reception, guests have access to a counter replete with dates, a common part of the Middle Eastern diet, as well as the Gracie Diet.

It was while savoring some of those dates that the GRACIEMAG.com reporter came upon Tarsis Humphreys and Bernardo Faria. The two aces from Alliance were on their way to the restaurant where lunch was served. They rushed through their food to not miss the first bus taking competitors, staff and journalists to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), the arena where, at around 3:15 pm, the No-Gi version of the 2011 Jiu-Jitsu World Pro would begin.

Neither Bernardo nor Tarsis did too well this Friday. The former was routed 7 to 0 at weight by Rafael Lovato and was submitted in the quarterfinals of the absolute by Gilmar Oliveira (choke).

The pair to truly shine throughout the day was Rodolfo Vieira and Rafael Mendes. Rodolfo kept true to the form he exhibited at the 2011 Pan. Summing up his engagements at weight and open weight, he fought seven times. The most hard-fought of them all was the absolute semifinal against Vagner “Ceará” Rocha. Rodolfo came from behind to win on advantage points in the waning moments of the match. Riveting.

Now Rafa seems to be “fiestier” than ever. In a good way, of course. Praiseworthy was the fighters slickness in dealing with much larger opponents without resorting to a run-away strategy. Rafa goes on the attack, intimidates. That was the case against Gilmar Oliveira (yes, the same one who submitted Bernardo Faria).

Displaying the riskiest maneuver of the event until now, Rafa took Gilmar’s back and squeezed out a rear-naked choke. Gilmar hung on, but lost on the scorecards.

This Saturday, the youngest Mendes (who is no more than 145 lbs) will enter the absolute decider against Rodolfo Vieira (around 200 lbs), “the locomotive.” Who takes this one? Voice your prediction in the comments section below.

Another duo drawing wows this Friday was Xande Ribeiro and Rafael Lovato. Wielding well-honed techniques, the two black belts had stellar showings at their respective weights. Xande is in his over-92 kg-division final against José Junior, while Lovato is in the under-92kg final against man-of-the-hour Rodolfo Vieira.

In the absolute division, however, Xande and Lovato were beaten early on in their brackets.
