Sonnen will host the event along side Molly Qerim, just as he did for last year’s ceremony.

The magazine’s CEO was enthusiastic about Sonnen’s return, citing the one-two punch of the fighter and Qerim as an entertaining pair.

“Chael did a fantastic job as host last year and we are elated to be able to work with him again,” said Rob
Hewitt, President and CEO of Fighters Only. “The commanding presence of Chael combined with the
beauty and skill of Molly make the perfect partnership as hosts and we feel sure that they will make this
years show even more entertaining.”

Sonnen is currently filming Season 17 of The Ultimate Fighter, which leads into a light heavyweight title fight between the champion, Jones, and the outspoken fighter. Sonnen, however, will take time away from the camera to host the evening of awards, according to the release.

The World MMA Awards was created to celebrate success and achievement within the MMA industry. Fans from all over have the opportunity to cast their vote on which athletes, brands and industry professionals have made the greatest impact on the sport over the last year.

Categories for the award show include “Fight of the Year,” “Knockout of the Year” and “Submission of the Year.”  The “Lifetime Achievement” award will also be presented to a unknown recipient during the event.

The award ceremony is scheduled to take place Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

Late this Thursday night the attention of the MMA world turns to the Palms Casino and Resort in Las Vegas, where the annual World MMA Awards, the Oscar of mixed martial arts, will unfold.

The master of ceremonies will be none other than Chael Sonnen, Anderson “Spider” Silva’s greatest nemesis, who provides an endless stream of controversy, having targeted Lyoto Machida, the Nogueira brothers, Wanderlei Silva, Vitor Belfort, Junior Cigano, ring girl Arianny Celeste. In one of the more recent of his tirades to stir up controversy, he said that the ring girl had the IQ of the number she holds up.

Now the stage is set for further provocation, as archenemy Anderson, the reigning UFC middleweight champion, has been nominated for two categories (Fighter of the Year and Knockout of the Year, against Vitor Belfort at UFC 126), and he took off for the awards ceremony in Las Vegas last night.

Além do Silva, outros nove brasileiros concorrem a prêmios: Lyoto Machida (Nocaute do ano, sobre Randy Couture no UFC 129), Patricky “Pitbull” Freire (Nocaute do Ano, com a joelhada voadora que derrubou Toby Imada no Bellator 39), José Aldo (Luta do Ano, contra Mark Hominick, no UFC 129), Vinny Magalhães (Finalização do Ano, com a gogoplata invertida contra Victor Nemkov no M-1 Challenge).

O UFC Rio, acontecido em agosto, rendeu a Rodrigo Minotauro uma indicação ao prêmio de Virada do Ano, que premia lutadores que reagiram numa luta individual ou na carreira. O triunfo sobre Brendan Schaub, após três cirurgias e 18 meses parado, colocou o baiano na lista de indicados junto de Tito Ortiz, outro veterano que deu a volta por cima, sobre Ryan Bader no UFC 132.

Já Vitor Belfort concorre à Melhor Entrada no Ringue de 2011, pela caminhada no UFC 133. Curiosamente o japonês Yoshihiro Akiyama, sua vítima na luta, também está entre os indicados. O Brasil também está representado nas categorias Árbitro do Ano, por Mario Yamasaki, e Treinador do Ano, com Rafael Cordeiro e Cesar Gracie.

31-year-old judo black belt and professional fighter Timoteo “Toby” Imada (25w, 14l) won last year’s prize for best submission at MMA’s Oscar ceremony: the World MMA Awards.

He was awarded the prize for his win over Jorge Masvidal at Bellator 5 on May 1, 2009.
