One of the most exciting moments of the recent World Jiu-Jitsu Expo was the superfight between Vitor Shaolin and Nino Schembri.

A classic match between two of the most important competitors in Jiu-Jitsu history.

Bernardo Faria vs. Luiz Panza

Osvaldo Moizinho, Vitor Oliveira, Keenan Cornelius and Bernardo Faria are the 2014 BJJ Pro League champions.

In the featherweight division, Osvaldo Moizinho first had a great showing against Ivaniel Oliveira.

After taking Oliveira’s back, he went for the lapel and got the choke to advance to the final.

His opponent would be Paulo Miyao, who didn’t get the submission, but put his berimbolo to work to defeat Koji Shibamoto 14-2.

The final match was a nervous one and decided in the last seconds.

After a exchange of sweeps and sweep attempts, Moizinho got a last-second inversion to tie the score 8(3)-8(3).

The win came in the way of unanimous decision by the three referees in favor of Moizinho.

In the middleweight division, a unexpected result right in the first match.

Two-time world champion Otavio Sousa was surprised by Francisco Iturralde’s strategy of pulling guard first and ended up being swept with only one minute left in the clock.

Sousa put his efficient guard game to work and managed a sweep, but time ran out before he could stabilize the position, costing him a 2-0 defeat.

In the other semifinal, Vitor Oliveira had a tough match with Claudio Calasans Jr and won 2-1 on advantages with two near guard passes.

The final was similar to Iturralde’s first match and the Ecuadorian pulled guard and managed a sweep to go ahead in the scoreboard.

Vitor battled from the bottom and in the last moments was able to come on top and get the mount to turn the score to 4-2 for the trophy.

In the heavyweight division, Keenan Cornelius was all about business.

The American black belt was not seen in the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo all weekend and appeared only to compete in the BJJ Pro League.

The first semifinal involved Jackson Sousa and Yuri Simões replacement, Eduardo Telles.

Sousa battled Telles’ famous turtle guard and won 4-1 on advantages after a 2-2 tie in points.

Cornelius had his first match against Roberto Alencar and was able to impose his game to win 12-0.

The final put old rivals face to face again and was decided by details.

Keenan used his notorious worm guard but couldn’t get ahead on the scoreboard.

In the end, two out of three referees decided that Keenan was the winner.

The Checkmat crowd complained that Cornelius should have been punished for an ilegal grip to Sousa’s pants.

In the ultraheavy division, Bernardo Faria put his A game to work and debuted with a triangle choke against Gustavo Pires.

In the other semifinal, Luiz Panza started out working his guard against Ricardo Evangelista and winning by armbar.

The final was a rematch of the 2014 Pan, when Panza was able to finish Faria with an armbar.

Faria gave no second chance to Panza’s dangerous game and choked from the back for the gold medal.

Vitor Shaolin takes Nono Schembri down at the 2014 World Jiu-Jitsu Expo

Day 1 of the 2014 World Jiu-Jitsu Expo was dedicated first to kids and then to the superfights.

In the children competition, Mendes Bros’ Art of Jitsu Academy took first place, with Gracie Barra second and Checkmat in third place.

After that and while many idols taught seminars or took part in other activities, the central mat was reserved for the superfights.

First, Alexandre Pulga outsocred Zach Maxwell 4-2 with two sweeps against one.

The second superfight ended fast with Ricardo Resende catching Danilo Indio with a triangle/armbar in 2:09.

Tim Spriggs stepped on the gas pedal in his fight against Leo Nogueira and with two guard passes and a knee on the belly won with a 10-2 score.

Bruno Frazzato defeated AJ Agazarm 3-0 on advantages in the forth superfight of the evening.

The fifth match ended with a referees decision in favor of Augusto Mendes against Gianni Grippo after a 0-0 tie.

The co-main event of the night was the firsth throwback match of the card, between Robson Moura and Marcos Parrumpinha.

Robinho put his well-known game to work and went from the guard to Parrumpinha’s back and finished the fight with a clock choke.

The main event of the superfights card was a classic match up between Vitor Shaolin against Nino Schembri.

With his judo up to date, Shaolin managed to take Nino down three times and also sweep one time to win 8-0.

The World Jiu-Jitsu Expo continues this Sunday with the BJJ Pro League, Long Beach Open and more seminars.

Marcelo Garcia’s black belt Gianni Grippo will be facing 2013 featherweight world champion Augusto Tanquinho.

The two are getting ready for the third match up between the two and the score now is 1-1, so it’s for the tie breaker.

GRACIEMAG.com talked to the the two about the match.

Chantre talks about what motivated him to accept the fight against Yoshida: “Besides the fact that he is a world champion (no-gi) and that he was part of many prestigious events in his career, our personal score is 1-1. He beat me in the 2009 Worlds No-Gi, when I was a black belt for only three months. It was a defeat that mattered a lot to me. Then, I was able to defeat him at the American Nationals one year later and I want to take the lead now.”

Yoshida was very candid when talking about why he accepted the fight:”My main motivation is that I’m getting paid to fight, and I can use the money”.

When asked about the main qualities of their opponents, Samir highlighted Yoshida’s skills: “He is very experienced and besides that he is very flexible and have very sharp attacks. It’s gonna be a fight where you can’t loose your focus even for a second.”

Yoshida looked back into their past matches to praise Chantre: “He is a very skilled fighter.”

In closing, the two say why they think they are going to win the match.

“I think I evolved a lot as an athlete in the recent years and gained a lot of experience. In my opinion, that was what I lacked in our first fight in 2009. I’m in a very good training routine and God willing I’ll win and get ahead in our personal record.”

Yoshida believes that his prior experience will help him: “We fought before, so I know his game and that will help me to win.”

Robson Moura

The 2014 World Jiu-jitsu Expo will be the setting for another classic rematch.

Five-time world champion Robson Moura will face world champion Marcos “Parrumpinha” da Matta, a legitimate Carlson Gracie black belt.

Both currently live in Florida, Robinho leading his academy in Tampa, Florida, and Parrumpinha teaching at the ATT headquarters, in Coconut Creek.

Their history as rivals peaked in 2000, when they faced each other in the world championship light-featherweight final, which ended with Robinho’s victory.

GRACIEMAG.com reached out to the duo to know what motivated them to accept the rematch.

Parrumpinha talks about the importance of recognizing the value of what he calls “old school athletes”: “It’s a honor to be a part of this event. We’ll have several old school athletes like myself, Robinho, Nino Schembri and Vitor Shaolin.”

Robinho says that the opponent offered was his main motivation to accept the invitation: “We have this history among us. The two times we fought were very close fights. Today, our rivalry turned into friendship.”

Both fighters agreed when pointing out the qualities of the opponent.

“Robinho is one of five most technical athletes in Jiu-Jitsu. I consider him to be complete in terms of Jiu-Jitsu technique. It’s going to be a great match,” says Parrumpinha.

“Parrumpinha has a very important history in Jiu-Jitsu. He was always one of the leading guys in Master Carlson Gracie’s team. He is very aggressive and has lots of years of experience,” replied Moura.

When asked why they think they’re gonna win the match, both Moura and Parrumpinha were very clear on how they see the outcome.

“I think that when we fought in the early 2000’s, I was a purple belt fighting a black belt. I think I evolved a lot in 14 years, even more than he did. He was already outstanding, very skilled. I was only a tough guy with little technique. Now, it’s going to be different. I feel I have more tools to win,” analyzed Parrumpinha.

“It’s hard to say who’s going to win. We have a very different game, but we know each other very well. In the end, I think I’m going to win because I have more trust in my game,” says Robinho.
